From the minute they landed and stepped out of the airport Jack knew they were being followed. He was already on edge after having made the decision to send Seska and Alyssa in search of the Associates in Cairo.
Not that the pair would have obeyed him if he'd said no, and he supposed it made sense. Alyssa wouldn't be questioned; she would be known and Seska could be explained.
He had to put them to the back of his mind as the more immediate threat of being followed was more important.
"Ianto, Gwen, let's go sightseeing."
The pair tensed; they knew what that meant.
Ianto drove the hire car out of the compound and took the route that most tourists would take; an open road was what they needed.
The city was soon behind them and the car that was following them was more noticeable.
Jack waited until they were nearer desert than city.
"Now," he said.
Ianto wrenched the wheel and in a cloud of dust and sand he did a 180.
The car followed suit and despite Ianto's best efforts they were caught in a pincer movement when two more cars appeared and they were forced to stop.
The occupants of the cars were efficient and soon a dozen weapons were aimed at them.
Two unarmed men pushed through and one shouted. "Please to get out of the car, Captain Harkness!"
Jack knew he had no choice and he took the lead and stepped out.
"There is no need for violence Captain. You and I are on the same side."
"Who the hell are you?" Jack demanded.
"We are the Brotherhood of Osiris and we are going to stop Seth from rising to power."
Seska followed Alyssa down the narrow street. He had no idea where they were going, so he had to trust her.
The news that his mother had not been amongst the dead had fuelled him with hope; if his mother was alive he would bring him back and try and undo whatever damage had been done.
Alyssa stopped outside a small café that seemed to been frequented by natives and unfriendly ones at that, judging by the stares they got as they walked in.
But Alyssa walked confidently across the room and up to the bar. She said something that Seska couldn't quite catch and the man bowed his head and then picked up the phone. Minutes later they were being driven in a limousine through the gates of and towards a very large house.
Alyssa said. "Do not speak, watch and learn, and pay due deference to this man. He is the most powerful man in the cult."
"Who is he?"
"He is the high priest and if my father succeeded, he will know where Seth is."
As they stepped out of the limo a man walked down the steps to greet them.
"Alyssa," he said and embraced him. "I am so sorry about your father, such a tragedy, so many lives lost."
He then noticed Seska. "And who is this?"
"His name is Seska. His parents were acolytes and he was training for the priesthood."
Seska gave him his best bow; play along, keep the enemy fooled.
"Then he will be welcomed here. Come, you should rest and then you can tell me your tale of survival."
Jack and his team sat around a table on the patio of a very large house. They may not have been handcuffed, but they were definitely prisoners; the not so understated armed guards attested to that.
They were joined by the two men from earlier, and they were just a polite as they had been then.
"So," one of the men said. "Why are Torchwood interested in what most people would consider a myth?"
Jack was once again surprised and annoyed that his supposedly secret organisation wasn't so secret. So there was no point in lying.
"If it's alien, then Torchwood is interested."
The man didn't laugh and that got Jack very interested; especially when the other man said.
"You believe that Seth has found a host?"
Jack nodded. "Yes, a friend of mine."
"Then your friend must be someone special. A host must be very strong to survive the process, let alone hold all of Seth's power."
"He is that," Jack said.
"If it is not too forward, do your have a photograph? We may be able to locate him and keep an eye on Seth's movements."
Jack nodded towards Ianto, who produced his pocket tablet, and one of the men snapped his fingers and a laptop appeared and the same man gave Ianto an e-mail address.
It took a few moments for the picture to appear, but when it did the men's reaction was instant.
"This is not possible…this man is your friend!"
"Is it a problem?" Jack said.
"You do not know who this person is?"
Jack sat upright. "Who do think he is?"
"This person…he is…was the host for Lord Horus, God of the Sky."
