One month later…
The alarm had been blaring for almost ten minutes without pause and Raven scowled, unable to ignore it and continue reading for a second longer. She phased through her bed and the floor below it, still in a seated position, and floated down the hall to the living room where her teammates were gathered around the gigantic main computer, which was displaying a huge, flashing exclamation mark.
"There's a distress call from downtown," Robin remarked, his lips thinning into a line. The others were clustered around him, just staring up at the monitor.
"Are you going to get that?"
All eyes went to the empath and the spiky-haired teen shook his head. "I think you should take this one, Raven."
"Oh?" She glided forward, reading the details scrolling along the bottom of the emergency signal and blinking. "Oh."
A moment later, the huge, wavering form of a dark bird took off from the Titan Tower.
Jump National Bank was on fire, smoke pouring out of the make-shift entrance gaping in one of its brick walls. The alarms within blared, alerting the city for miles of its peril, and a SWAT team had arrived, suited up in special armor intended to combat the powers of metahumans.
The moment Raven landed, the form she used to travel dissolving into nothingness, they swarmed her, all talking at once. She raised a hand and the gathering stilled, fear rolling off of them like a second skin.
Fear for their city. Fear of the dark Titan that had come to save them.
She would be lying if she said that it didn't bother her a bit.
Without another word, the empath headed for the bank, hopping neatly over the jagged bits of wall and striding into the yawning darkness within without hesitation, casting her senses out in a net, looking for—
The lights above flickered weakly, revealing the slim form of the pinkette seated high atop of row of safety deposit boxes, and Raven's heart gave an odd little skip-hop.
Jinx. She hadn't heard from the thief in what felt like forever, but had actually been… A week? My, how time flew.
"Hey, Gloomy!" She grinned, kicking her feet. "Funny running into you here."
"Hilarious." Somehow, the heroine had managed to contain the elation that bloomed like a warm cloud beneath her breast. "You could have just called me."
"Where's the fun in that?"
The acrobatic villainess easily evaded the metal containers that came hurtling at her, held aloft by inky tendrils of energy, using them as footholds to close the distance between them. She whirled; her powers shimmering brilliantly in waves as the lights above went out completely and there were loud 'clang!'s as the wall of safes tumbled.
Sounds echoed in the darkness: the whistle of projectiles; flesh meeting flesh; metallic clanking and dull thuds.
When the lights came back on, both girls were panting, hair mussed, and clothing torn in places. Raven had four eyes rather than two and Jinx's glowed neon.
They stared each other down, tensed and ready to act. Then, the pinkette burst out laughing, a crooked grin spreading across her pretty face.
"Dinner later?"
She accepted the hand that was offered, allowing her nemesis to pull her in so that their faces were mere centimeters apart. "I'd like that."
Warm, deft hands wandered over the taller girl's form and their lips met, tongues dancing. The purplette's back hit a wall and she arched eagerly into her partner—a silent invitation that made Jinx chuckle and nip at the slender column of her throat, marking what was hers.
All hers.
"They'll… Mm… Get suspicious if we stay in here any longer," the empath gasped, resting her hands on the other girl's shoulders. She didn't push the villainess away nor did she pull her closer, caught between what she had to do and what she desperately wanted to do.
"Yeah, you're right." Distance had become the heroine's worst enemy over time—worse than even the swarming paparazzi or her demon bastard of a father. "I'll meet you at the usual spot." She winked. "Let's give them a show."
And, as Raven chased the hexer into the night, her mind was on places to go… And the things they would do after their date.
