::Chapter 14::
After dinner, Weiss was trying to catch one of her targets alone. She found Naru, only to find Masako dragging him out of the house to go somewhere. Weiss couldn't believe this anymore. She was losing it, so much that random objects around the entire house were now starting to levitate from her TK flaring up. She angrily stared at the front door.
Multiple footsteps could be heard throughout the house a few moments later. All of them were hurriedly coming towards Weiss, knowing that she'd be the only person—and reason—that could cause things to float. Everyone else reached the foyer where Weiss was, only to find her glaring daggers at the front door, her hands clenched into fists and shaking at her sides. Even the chandelier above her was floating up. In the case of the others, Lin was a bit concerned. Monk and Yasu were in one way scared and worried in another, Mai and Ayako was were just plain worried, Luella was trying to decide if she should be upset or worried about what will happen when Weiss snaps out of it, and Martin and John were just watching with confusion on their faces.
"Weiss, dear, what on earth is wrong?" Luella questioned, concern evident in her voice. Weiss just turned as the chandelier dropped, crashing to the floor but not breaking. Weiss had caught it the last second—before it hit the floor—with her TK. She stomped off toward the room she was sharing with Lin.
"It's nothing of concern at the moment, Luella. Just don't be surprised if there is property damage come morning."
Luella widened her eyes and looked at the others with a mix of shock and horror. Especially when they heard Weiss slam the bedroom door. "Does anyone know what's going on?!" She whispered almost harshly. "I don't want my whole house in ruins!" Everyone looked just as confused, but then Martin spoke up.
"I wonder if it had anything to do with Masako taking Noll out of the house to go look around the city a bit..." He said. The woman furrowed her brows in confusion.
"What does that matter?" She asked, not noticing the hurt and sad look at Mai's face at her husband's words. Martin sighed.
"Luella, why do you seem surprised? It's no big secret Weiss and Masako never got along. I would suspect Weiss sees her as someone trying to take her brother away from her."
"Wait..." John stepped forward, confusion written on his face. "Weiss and Masako knew each other before this?"
Martin nodded. "Oh, yes. In fact those two have known each other just as long as Noll has known Masako. Weiss never likes it when Masako hangs all over Noll."
"But the first time Masako and Naru met was the case at Mai's highschool..." Monk said, gesturing to Mai slightly. "If Masako met Weiss before, then why haven't we?" He asked. Martin shook his head.
"I said knew, not met. Those three have known each other for quite a long time, but the case you are referring to is probably the first time Noll and Masako met face to face. They did know of each other prior to then. Weiss actually met Masako before Noll did, and even then, Weiss didn't like the girl too much. I would say it has a lot to do with that stuck up attitude Masako has."
"Martin! That's not polite!" Luella chided. Martin held up his hands in defense.
"Hey, not my words. Weiss said it before remember? Anyway, best to just leave her be for now, though I feel a bit sorry for you Lin." He stated. The Chinese man sighe in agreement before he stumbled forward when Monk slapped him on the back with a grin.
"Don't worry, Lin. I'm sure she won't give you too much trouble." Monk grinned a bit more. Everyone then decided to get settled into their rooms.
Mai was the last one to enter her room since she walked leisurely to it. Her mind was too preoccupied with thoughts of Naru and Masako. Why did Naru go off with her? He could've stopped her if he wanted to. Wasn't he going to tell her something important before Monk and Masako had interrupted though? Mai bit her lip. Maybe Weiss was wrong... Naru didn't love her after all. After a short while, Mai could hear a knock on her bedroom door, and then a voice on the other side.
"Mai, it's Weiss."
The brunette snapped her eyes to the closed door and hurriedly went to it to open it. Hopefully Weiss was in a better mood than before. Weiss walked in and sighed slightly.
"Sorry about the show earlier, Mai. I'm just so tired of that little tramp."
Mai gave a small smile, sitting down on her bed. "It's okay..." She almost whispered. Weiss sat next to Mai and shook her head.
"No, it's not okay. That stupid medium just won't quit. I know for a fact Naru has no feelings for that girl at all, never has, but she just won't quit trying to force him to feel something for her. I'm starting to reach the point of strangling that harlot."
"Weiss..." Mai sighed, looking down at her hands. "Naru, he...he could've stopped Masako from taking him if he truly had wanted to...but he didn't..."
Weiss sighed as well. "Naru is odd. Sometimes he just does things, but I can guarantee that he has no feelings for Masako. Have you ever seen him actually look at her like a lover would?" She questioned. Mai shifted her gaze off to the side.
"Like he's ever looked at me that way..." She mumbled quietly, almost sadly. Weiss clenched her fists. She found a hard cover book in the room and flung it into the back of Mai's head with her TK, effectively knocking the girl into the floor.
"Wake up, Mai Taniyama! For what purpose would I ever lie to you? What could I possibly gain from lying to you about the man I treat as a brother? Naru would sooner go to an amusement park on his own will than ever actually fall in love with that stupid medium!"
Wincing, Mai sat up and rubbed the back of her head and then gently on the front of it where she hit the floor when she was knocked down.
"Owwwww!" She cried out. Weiss sighed a bit, calming down.
"Sorry, force of habit when you spend your life with three guys that are as oblivious as stone. I'm sorry for hitting you, but you need to get a grip, and also, look at you that way? He doesn't give a look to anyone. He always has that same dead fish expression all the damn time." She muttered. Mai laughed as she sat back on her bed. Weiss grinned a bit. "Don't worry, Luella and Lin are in on this with me. And between me and Luella, I can guarantee you and Naru will be together. If that doesn't happen, then I'll change my name to Shirley."
Mai had to cover her mouth to keep from bursting out laughing, though a few giggles did manage it escape. Weiss smiled and patted Mai on the back gently.
"Just hold on, Mai. Don't let Masako try to make you feel like you have no chance either. No matter how hard she tries, Naru already made his choice, and I know it's you."
"Okay..." Mai whispered, though she still felt a little upset. She didn't know why she felt that way, but some part in her mind just wouldn't let her believe what Weiss was saying. 'I need Naru to say it...before I know for sure.' She thought. Weiss nodded and got up.
"Rest up, Mai. We got a lot of work to do tomorrow." She proclaimed. The petite brunette gave a sheepish smile.
"Umm... You think I could put some ice on my head first? It still really hurts..." She confessed, brushing her fingers against her head. Weiss nodded and grabbed Mai's hand. She led her to the kitchen, going in the freezer and grabbing an ice pack. Then she presses it to Mai's head gently. Wincing at the contact, Mai flinched away from it before easing it back on there. Weiss held the ice pack there and sighed a bit, hearing the kitchen door open. The two girls looked up to see Naru and Masako who had just returned to the house. Weiss gave a small glare at Masako before speaking.
"Welcome back you two."
Masako, seeing the glare and not really knowing why Weiss was giving her one, just sent one back to her. Though Naru just ignored both girls and went straight to Mai.
"What happened to you?" He demanded, furrowing his brows. He looked between Mai and Weiss, impatiently waiting for an answer. Weiss sighed.
"It was my fault, Naru. It was only a book. Mai was having a little, not sure what you call it, emotional deadpan?"
"What?" Naru hissed slightly at Weiss, a little surprise as well. Mai saying 'no, I wasn't!' was ignored by everyone in the room. "You hit her?"
Weiss glared at Naru as the room felt heavy for a moment. Naru could tell his sister was not happy, but he didn't know just why. "Naru, back off. I'm not in the best mood right now, and you are part of the damn reason." She walked out of the room, brushing passed him before whispering in his ear on the way. "And you hurt Mai, you idiot." And with that she went to her room.
Mai shifted uncomfortably, feeling the tense atmosphere. She didn't know what Weiss told Naru, but it made him freeze with wide eyes whatever it was. She griped the ice pack, which Weiss had handed to her, tighter in her hand.
"Umm, I...I think I'll head on to bed." She stood up, avoiding Naru and Masako. She felt like she needed to get out of there. "Good night." She mumbled before scurrying out.!Weiss got back to her room and shut the door before she sighed a bit.
"I'm gonna bash my head through a wall at this rate." She grumbled. Lin, who was in the room on his laptop, laughed a bit.
"Trouble, Weiss?"
She shot him a glare. "Mai and Naru." She said through gritted teeth. Lin nodded in understanding.
"Well, there is always next time. Don't get too stressed about it; you'll only wear yourself out, Weiss." He told her. The girl sat down on the bed beside him in frustration.
"No... Mai keeps thinking more and more that Naru doesn't love her, and him going off with that wretch is not helping their situation any!" She stated angrily. Lin sighed at her. Masako did seem to have a knack for doing things at the worst times though.
"Masako can be troublesome at times. It's surprising she is still trying to get Naru to fall for her after all this time of him being dead to her emotionally." He murmured. Weiss nodded in agreement. Lin put his hand on Weiss' shoulder and gave a small smile. She nodded and the both of them laid down to sleep for the night.
"I'll have to try again tomorrow..." Weiss mumbled before falling asleep.
The next morning, the first ones awake were Luella, Weiss, and Naru. Weiss got up and made sure not to disturb Lin as she went to the kitchen to make some tea. As she stepped into the kitchen, she paused when she saw Naru seeing at the table, though he didn't have any tea—he probably refused to drink any except Mai's. She didn't know what to say to him after last night. Weiss sighed a bit, thinking it over carefully. She walked over and sat next to him, but didn't say anything yet. Her 'brother' didn't make any effort to either.
"Naru, what's wrong?" She finally asked. For a few moments it didn't look as though he was going to say anything, or if he even heard her, but he finally spoke.
"What did you mean last night?" He asked without looking at her. Weiss seemed a bit confused.
"What do you mean what did I mean?"
Naru's jaw clenched. "The last thing you said to me before you left the kitchen last night." He answered. Weiss nodded.
"You remember how you went out with Masako?" She asked. Naru nodded in reply. "I got pissed cause I'm honestly sick of her still doing that to you, and when Mai found out, it almost broke her heart. Naru, game's over. I know for a fact you love her; she loves you too, but if you keep doing that crap, you're gonna push her away to the point I can't bring her back up. So either you confess to Mai, or you tell Masako to piss off."
Naru scowled at the mention of the medium. "It's not like I wanted to go with Miss Hara." He said irritably, not even going to say he had tried to confess to his assistant yesterday.
"I know. She has been having you go out with her for years by blackmailing you with your real identity. One problem though, Naru, we are in your parent's house, and your entire team already know you're Oliver Davis. How can she blackmail you with a secret that isn't a secret anymore?" She questioned. The dark-haired man only turned his head away from her.
"It's not of your concern." He said. Weiss sighed a bit and gave Naru a light hug.
"Naru, it does concern me. You are like a brother to me. I can't replace that. You know Masako and I never got along, and I can't stand the thought of her taking you from me or our friends. That's why I got upset." She let him go and looked him right in the eyes. "Just promise me that you won't go on any more of those dates with Masako and that you'll tell her your feelings about her advances honestly soon. Okay?"
"...Alright." He said after clenching his jaw, which Weiss noticed. Weiss smiled and nodded.
"Thank you. Now then, time for morning tea." She got up and headed to the counter to make her tea. She didn't even bother making Naru a cup since he'd probably just wait for Mai to wake up so she could make him some. He was weird like that. Weiss went out to the backyard to enjoy her tea in peace out in the garden. It was about fifteen minutes later before someone came and joined her. Martin stepped outside to the backyard and joined Weiss as he just gave her a small smile.
"Up early today, huh?" He asked. Weiss looked up at Martin and nodded her head.
"Yeah, Lin's still sleeping."
"Everyone else too it seems." He commented. Weiss nodded and sighed.
"Yeah, though I'm not sure how much sleep we'll get at the preserve." She replied. Martin nodded solemnly. Weiss and Martin concluded their talk, having discussed the case a bit more before everyone woke up. Promptly after breakfast, everyone got in two separate vans with plenty of equipment loaded in the trunks. Martin and Luella drove everyone to the preserve. Upon arriving at the case site, they were greeted by a short woman with brown hair who looked to be in her early thirties. Everyone got out of the vans as Weiss and Naru along with Martin and Luella went to speak with the woman. Everyone else was collecting the equipment.
"Good morning." The woman greeted politely with a small smile. "I'm assuming you are the paranormal team my boss hired?" She asked. Naru nodded to the womans question.
"That is correct. I trust you will have somewhere for us to setup and somewhere to sleep?"
"Yes, that's right. Would you like me to show you to them first?" She asked. Naru nodded his head as the woman led him and Weiss. "Oh, and by the way, my name is Heather Kelley. If you ever need anything, my boss wanted me to let you know to just ask." She added, looking back at them for a moment. Naru just nodded quietly, while Weiss decided to speak.
"Nice to meet you Heather. I'm Weiss Izanagi, and this is Naru. We'll make sure to let you know should we need anything."
Naru gave her a sideways glare at the introduction of his nickname, which Mai had given him. Weiss gave her own glare back. One he knew said 'shut up or else'. It seemed she was still upset with him over last night. Naru mentally sighed. It's not like he wanted to make Mai upset. It was far from it.
Heather brought Naru and Weiss to a lodge not too far from the exit to the preserve. There was plenty of room inside for people to actually live there, and around four bedrooms as well.
"This is plenty, thank you." Weiss said, looking around. Heather nodded and smiled as she left. The rest of the team along with Luella and Martin arrived at the lodge with all the equipment not too long after. They all placed the things down with a heavy sigh. Naru looked toward everyone and they got the message. They started to get things set up. Luella and Martin gave Naru and Weiss a hug and told everyone to be careful and to call if anything happened before they left. After the Davis' left, Weiss walked around the lodge a bit, her face showing what felt like a bit of disgust and anger as she mumbled to herself.
"This forest...I hate the feeling it's giving me...it feels like..."
Death? Decay? Blood? Take your pick!
Weiss snapped her head up and quickly looked around her when she heard someone speaking, obviously in response to her thinking out loud. Seeing no one near her, she became confused. 'Maybe I just imagined someone answering me?'
No, you didn't, silly girl. I DID answer you Those were the things you were thinking about. The voice seemed to be speaking in confidence. Weiss just shook her head before speaking to herself.
"Great, it's finally happened. All these years of this job and my abilities and I'm finally starting to go crazy." She waited a moment but didn't hear anything again. She sighed a bit in relief before being caught off guard as the voice returned. Weiss now noticed it was like her own voice but had a slightly more cheerful, but also cocky and arrogant, tone to it.
You ain't going crazy, you dumb broad. I thought you were supposed to be smart?!
Weiss frowned deeply at the words, which she was still trying to figure out where it was coming from. The voice kicked up again, a bit more mockingly.
Good Lord, you are dumber than I imagined. Is this really me I'm talking to? I'll spell it out for you girl. You ain't crazy—I'm you and you're me!
Weiss seemed lost in thought at processing this and decided to just speak in her thoughts. 'So what, I got an inner me now too? Naru gives me enough headaches as it is.'
You ain't the only one he drives into the ground like a fence post. But more importantly it's a good sign I'm here now. Being cooped up in here and muted since our parents died, kinda broke my heart the first few months before the Davis' took you in.
Weiss smiled at that memory a bit. 'So why is it good you're now here? And I can't really call you Weiss—that would get weird if we called each other the same thing—so what do I call you?'
Chaosweaver13: Well now, this case should be interesting ^_^
Naruisawesome: Hehe yup! Soooo, what do yall think of Weiss' little inner self? XD
Chaosweaver: Bit of a firecracker ain't she? So we have another little request from you, our readers! ^_^
