Chapter 14: You Can Teach a New Slayer Old Tricks
Waking up, Caroline groaned thinking she had been dreaming that she had been rescued. Then she noticed the comforter and sheets she was wrapped in. Blinking she saw a window with sunshine pouring in gleaming yellow light. Yawning, she sat up and was startled when someone knocked on the door of the room before swinging the door open. "Good morning, Caroline. I have brought you breakfast. I hope you like pancakes. If not, I'll have the cook fix you something more to your liking."
Pushing herself up into a sitting position, Caroline could only stare in awe as Klaus placed the tray in front of her. Plucking the rose from the vase on the tray, he held it out to her. Feeling her lips twitch Caroline was beginning to feel giddy with delight. "Thank you, Klaus."
"Don't thank me, love, thank my brother, Elijah. He is the one who slaved over a stove to perfect your pancakes for you," Klaus said with eyes which sparkled with amusement.
"Really?" Caroline questioned the vampire as she placed the piece of pancake in her mouth and then began to groan. "Oh, that is amazing. Truly. I don't think I've ever had a pancake that tasted that good in my entire life."
"Good." Klaus replied before sitting down across from her. "There are things we must discuss today."
"Like what?" Caroline asked before looking at the clock. "Oh, no. I am so late for school." She picked up the tray and placed it to the side before getting up.
Before she could go anywhere Klaus caught her by the shoulders. "That is one of the things we must discuss." He looked so serious that it made Caroline nervous. "You will not be going to school today or any other day until your training is complete."
"My what?" Caroline's jaw dropped and she pulled away from Klaus, taking several steps backwards. "You can't just keep me here. I have responsibilities. I'm the captain of the cheerleaders. I have committees. And… and Miss Mystic Falls is coming up. You can't just expect me to just drop everything and begin some kind of training. And what do you mean, training? I mean I'm a slayer. I should be trained by, like a hunter, or other slayer or something like that, not a vampire. I mean really. You're the bad guy in the situation and my mom and my friends and Alaric are the good guys. And I have to keep my GPA up to go to college… Why is it that everyone thinks my life is supposed to come second to something I did not choose… Why, Klaus, why?"
At this point Caroline sat back down as her shoulders began to heave and she began to sob. "I don't want it. Just take it back. If that makes me ungrateful or a bad person I don't care. I don't care. I'm only seventeen. I just want to be normal and go out and do normal things like the other girls my age."
Stooping in front of Caroline, Klaus looked into her eyes. "Caroline. You are not like any seventeen year old girl I have ever met. Otherwise, you would have been a snack weeks ago."
Not knowing why, Caroline began go laugh. "That is horrible."
"Yes. Yes, it was but it caused you to calm down. Therefore, it was worth it." Klaus got up and sat down beside Caroline and wrapped an arm around her. "We are mortal enemies, you and I. However, I do not believe in a life in which we cannot work together.- unless you truly believe I am evil and must be stopped at all costs."
Looking up at Klaus, Caroline sighed. "I don't know. I don't know you, Klaus. You tell me things but I don't know if you are just telling me what you think I want to hear or whether you're sincere."
"I care for you, love. That you can know is true," Klaus told Caroline as he leaned over to brush his lips against hers. "That does not mean I will not kill you if you try to stop me. Therefore, you need to learn how to protect yourself from me and anyone else who wishes to do you harm. It would be a shame if the world lost a light such as yours."
Wanting to continue the conversation, Caroline could only watch Klaus as he got up. "Finish your breakfast. Training will begin when you come down."
Gobbling the remaining pancakes, Caroline ran to the bathroom and took a quick shower. After pulling on a pair of running pants and a tank top, she took the stairs two at a time. Walking through a long hallway on the first floor, she finally found the great room in which most of the furnishings had been moved close to the walls. Klaus was waiting with two dark haired men and a tall blonde woman. Looking up as Caroline stood on the threshold, Klaus grinned. "Caroline," he called waving for her to come join them. "This is my family."
Jaw dropping Caroline focused on the other three vampires. She had seen their pictures but was only now realizing that these were the Original siblings minus one. "Where's Finn?" she asked quietly.
"In his coffin. Don't worry, we're much more fun," the dark haired vampire, who stood next to the blonde, informed her.
"Actually, he's with his girlfriend, Sage. They will be here later to help with the training," the other dark haired vampire informed Caroline. He took her hand and kissed it gently. "Let me introduce myself I am Elijah Mikaelson. That is Rebekah," he said gesturing to the blonde and then turned to the other vampire. "And that is Kol."
"I am the greatest, most handsome, most intelligent, most sexy," Kol began before Rebekah interrupted him.
"Most arrogant, most improper, most immature." Rebekah listed off holding up a finger for each trait with a wide grin.
"Strumpet." Kol yelled.
"Wanker." Rebekah yelled back.
"Enough." Elijah thundered and the two younger siblings took several steps away from each other.
Sighing, Klaus decided to intervene. "I did not undagger the two of you so you could bicker. You are here to help Caroline in her training."
"You mean we're here to help you teach her how to kill our kind. As much as I would love to see how that turns out, I think I'll be going." Walking toward the doorway, Kol was stopped by Klaus.
"You will stay and play your part or you can rot in a box for another century." Klaus informed his brother, tilting his head to the side. "The choice is yours." Walking backwards Klaus smirked before turning his back to Kol. "As for you, Elijah or Rebekah, you may follow your brother out the door for all I care. However, it would be in your best interests and in Caroline's, to do me this smallest of favors."
Growling, Kol walked back into the room. "What do you want me to do?" he asked while glaring at Klaus.
"Nothing, yet. Right now, I just want you to sit back and watch." Walking toward Rebekah, Klaus held out a hand in the direction of the middle of the floor. "First, I want to examine Caroline's speed and reflexes. Rebekah, if you don't mind, I thought you could be part of this first exercise."
Smirking, Rebekah walked to the middle of the room. "Well, little slayer, show us what you can do."
Moving to the middle of the room slowly, Caroline was not too worried. Rebekah, although she was a thousand year old vampire, seemed like most teenagers. In spite of this assumption Caroline felt her heart rate increase as she began to feel the power emanating from the other blonde. Waiting for Rebekah to make a move, she felt awkward as the male vampires watched them.
"So, are they going to fight or what?" This is rather boring," Kol stated as he folded his arms over his chest.
Caroline turned her head slightly in Kol's direction when he spoke. Before she knew what had happened Rebekah knocked her to the floor and had her hand on Caroline's throat. Choking Caroline thought about her training. She did not have a weapon on her and they did not seem to be providing them at the moment. As Rebekah added the slightest extra pressure Caroline decided to use the only weapon she always had at her disposal.
"Re-be-kah." Caroline choked out. "Wh-at's i-t l-i-ke to be o-v-er a thou-s-and ye-ar-s o-ld a-nd to n-ev-er ha-ve h-ad a l-ast-ing re-lat-ion-ship?" Caroline spluttered out to the other blonde's horror and confusion. Rebekah loosened her hold on Caroline and Caroline took advantage and jammed her knee into Rebekah's solar plexus shoving her ten feet away before she shot to her feet in fight stance.
"Who told you that?" Rebekah snarled, jumping to her feet. She ignored Kol who was snickering.
"I didn't know. I was just taking a guess. Lucky, huh?" Cheering inwardly Caroline kept her eyes on Rebekah as she flipped through her inventory of anything that could be used as a weapon.
Dodging to the right, Rebekah followed as Caroline swung back to the right and did a series of quick back handsprings to grab a painting. Jerking it down, she made quick work of breaking the frame and holding onto several pieces of wood. She did not see the pained look on Klaus' face as she dropped the painting to the floor.
Taking several steps forward, Rebekah smiled tightly. "Alright, then. Let's get this over with, shall we?"
"We shall." Caroline replied. She was surprised to feel adrenaline pumping through her veins and that she was enjoying herself. As Rebekah moved toward her she stepped to the left side and waited as Rebekah moved to the right. They were five feet from each other when Rebekah moved forward swiftly but Caroline dropped to the floor and shot her feet upward catching Rebekah in the stomach.
Rebekah did not looked phased as she straightened up. Caroline had little time to plan her next move as she rolled away from Rebekah's attempt to grab her by the hair. Snarling, Rebekah began to circle Caroline before moving her fist forward as if she meant to punch her when her opponent ducked away from Rebekah's curled hand. She didn't anticipate Rebekah's foot which hit her left knee. This move drove Caroline to her feet.
Grinning, Rebekah grabbed Caroline by a fist full of her hair and jerked her off her feet. Hanging in mid-air Caroline felt a burning in her scalp from where Rebekah was holding her. Pulling one of the stakes from her waistband, she decided to try to distract the vampire. "You know Klaus hasn't had anything to say about you."
Rebekah frowned and looked at Klaus as Caroline rammed her stake into Rebekah's heart. Her jaw dropped as Rebekah realized that Caroline had just staked her. Letting go of Caroline, the girl fell onto her back as Rebekah placed a hand on the offending object and yanked it out. "Rude." Rebekah commented. "I do not approve." She said decisively before leaving the room.
Breathing hard, Caroline looked at the remaining vampires. "My turn," Kol called before coming over to pull Caroline to her feet. "Shall we dance, darling?"
Caroline was confused. "Dance?"
"Yes, dance," Kol replied. "Bekah, was bested but I shall show you how to disarm your enemy in other ways." He reached out, whirled Caroline around and pressed her body to his.
"Kol," Klaus growled, his warning clear.
Kol scoffed. "Do not worry, brother, this is all very professional." He took Caroline's hands and lifted them in front of her. You need to have the proper fighter's stance. "You're not fighting the Easter bunny, are you?" Curling Caroline's fingers into fists he moved her fists into a position in front of her. Then he nudged her legs so that they were spread slightly apart and her knees were slightly bent. "Now, you look the part. Let's see if you can play the part."
Stepping in front of Caroline, Kol examined her stance with a twinkle in his eye. "Okay, chin up, dear." Falling into a fighting position himself, Kol struck out with his right fist faster than Caroline could dodge. At the last moment he held his hand a centimeter from her nose. "Lesson number one: never underestimate your opponent. Bekah was going easy on you. I will not."
Punching and kicking, Kol had to stop himself several times from making contact before Caroline got the feel for their sparring. She managed to learn to dodge several shots and kicks. Finally, she felt comfortable enough to begin to fight back. Kol began to laugh as they moved around the room. "Good show, young one."
Laughing herself Caroline was giddy with their "dance." Unfortunately, this was the moment that Kol lunged forward, knocking her to the ground. "Grr." He mumbled against her neck. "Never become too complaisant."
Standing up, Kol held a hand out to Caroline and pulled her to her feet. "Elijah, she's all yours." Caroline knew this was a long day and training could take weeks, maybe even months. The one thing she knew for sure was that she would get through this training as quickly as possible and get back to her friends and family. In the meantime she would collect as much information as she could about the Originals and their weaknesses, as she knew Klaus was doing as he watched her every move carefully.
I hoped you enjoyed seeing the Original family in action because they're not going anywhere anytime soon!
