"We need to talk."
Bunny raised an eyebrow at the blonde haired man in front of him. "Ah don't even know ya."
Jake shrugged. "You don't have to. But I do know where this all could lead. So listen." Bunny was silent, which prompted Jake to continue. "Be careful with Jack. He might be putting on a strong face, but I know this case is going to mess him up. And if that happens, then the case is going down the drain."
"Why would ta case mess him up?"
"Can't say." Jake immediately responded. "But let's just leave it that with Jack has been through hell and he still hasn't recovered yet."
"Hasn't recovered from what exactly? If he has more information than he's sharin', Ah need ta know." Bunny crossed his arms. There was something going on, and he needed to know what it was, because everyone else thought it was important. And he really didn't trust this guy. Jake made a zipping motion in front of his mouth.
"I signed a contract forbidding me to speak about it. And honestly, so did everyone else that knows what happened. Except maybe the redhead you're traveling in. And I don't know if it has anything to do with the case." Jake stated. Bunny looked at him in confusion.
"If it doesn't have ta do with the case, then why are ya telling me?"
Jake smiled slightly and gave him a knowing look. "Because you look at Jack the same way I did when I first started to realize I was falling for him, which means that you care for him. Which means that I can trust you to watch out for him while you two are here."
Bunny stiffened. "Ah don't care about him like that. We're just partners."
Jack scoffed and shrugged. "Okay then. If you say so." He paused slightly as he heard someone starting to come down the stairs. "But are you absolutely sure about that?"
Before Bunny could respond, Jack walk over to them, holding his jacket in hand. "Hey guys, ready to go?" Jake nodded and swung an arm around Jack's shoulder.
"Yep, let's go Snowdrop. We got places to be and I'm pretty sure the redhead is outside." Together, they walked towards the door. Bunny followed silently, thinking about the blonde's last question. His stomach dropped slightly as he realized that he couldn't say yes.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The car ride to the police department did nothing to help the tension between the 4 of them. Jack was sitting up front, messing with the radio to try and find the one good station in the entire town, while Bunny and Talayeh were both in the back looking at their phone or the files. And then Jake was driving and whistling a random tune, trying to be inconspicuous about glancing at Bunny, and failing. Jack chose to ignore this and continue to be frustrated at the radio.
"Hey Winters, what happened to that one radio station we both liked growing up? You know, the one that played actual music." He asked finally, giving up on finding the channel. Jake chuckled.
"The one with punk music? They changed it to a jazz channel. Now we only have crappy pop, gospel, that one hip hop channel, and jazz."
Jack groaned and shifted lower in his seat. "Oh my god, what happened to this town when I left?"
"Everyone could finally go to sleep without worrying about what trouble you were getting up to. The night you left was the best night sleep I had in years." Jake responded. Jack snorted at this.
"Bullshit. I remember that as soon as I landed in California, you were calling me, drunk as hell, telling me how much you missed me and how much you wanted to fu-"
"Oh look were at the police station. Now we will never know the rest of Jack's sentence because we will be around children who should not be exposed to that kind of language." Talayeh interrupted as Jake parked the car, cutting off Jack. He glared at her jokingly and got out of the car. The rest of them did as well and walked into the station.
"The kids are waiting for you in two separate interrogation rooms. You know, the ones for kids. Not the one we put adults in. Talayeh can stay with me and I'll get her up to speed on all the interviews I've already done since the kids areā¦uncomfortable around women still." Jake instructed, pointing them to where the kids were. Jack furrowed his eyebrows.
"Have they gone home since?" Jake shook his head.
"We couldn't risk one of them having a breakdown or flashback and trying to attack their mom. The Bennetts are distraught that they can't have their kids back, but we have made sure they're as comfortable as they can be."
Bunny frowned at this and closed the file. "They're that bad? That they can't go home ta their parents?"
Jake sighed and nodded. "Yeah, we can't endanger anymore people. Believe me, the town is in a riot over it, but there is nothing we can do. Just go down that hallway and you'll see them right away. I suggest trying to talk to the kids one on one first, instead of the usual partner thing. They get scared easily and won't talk for days." The two psychologist nodded and followed his directions. They soon reached the two interview rooms, each with a one way window. Bunny took a quick look in each before turning back to Jack.
"Ah'll take the shelia. Try an' get a description from the boy. He's older, so he would remember better." Bunny instructed. Jack nodded and reached for the handle. "Oh, an' Jack?"
"Yeah?"
Bunny's stare intensified. "Ah don't care what the hell ya went through in ya past. Ah don't care if this case reminds ya of it. That's not as important as these kits right now. So, don't screw up the case 'cause of ya own issues. Got it?"
Jack tensed, but nodded none the less "Got it."
"Good. You can go now."
Jack entered the room carefully, making sure not to make a lot of noise. The boy was huddled in a corner, arms around his knees. Jack looked around before deciding to sitting on the ground near the boy.
"Hey, my name is Jackson Overland, but you can call me Jack." He introduced. The boy tensed at the sudden voice but said nothing in return. "I'm sure you know why I'm here. Would you like to talk about it?" The boy shook his head. Jack sighed. It was going to take a while to gain the boy's trust, but he wasn't going to rush it. He went through the same thing.
"Ok, we don't have to. We can talk about anything you want. Can you tell me your name first?" For the first time, the boy looked up and Jack froze. He hadn't seen the resemblance, but now that he saw the boy's face, he could see it. The kid looked a lot like Jack when he was younger, with brown hair and brown eyes.
"Jamie. I'm Jamie Bennett."
And I am once again so sorry about the late update, I am a terrible person that takes forever to do things and this has apparently been sitting in my files, almost done, for the past couple of months. I am so sorry guys. I will hopefully be posting more since I have a pretty easy schedule this school year, but then again, I've said that before. So this was kind of a filler chapter, as well as an intro for Jamie. Next chapter will have Jack's first interview with Jamie, as well as them getting their first lead in the case that leads Jack back to memory lane. And it is going to be a painful couple of chapters after this. You are all going to hate me after every single chapter. But now, onto the reviews!
To Cutepuppy21:
I loved your review, because you made me fall on the floor laughing. I'm so sorry about your phone, but I did warn you that I do cliff hangers. Please don't take your anger out on your phone, or it will only get more cracked. Believe me, I am evil and about to cause you so much pain.
To ElektraVamp05:
You are welcome and I'm glad you are liking the story! This is honestly one of my favorites that I am writing right now, even if my posting is irregular. I really love this universe and the characters, so you guys will be getting a lot more in the future.
To Killua Zoldyck:
So, it is kinda ironic that I am replying to your review in a way you hate, but you are completely right. I can directly message everyone that has an account that leaves me a review and I don't really have to do this. And if you guys don't want me to respond to your review at the end of my story, let me know. I will PM you instead. But, when I was first writing this story, a lot of the readers were anonymous and asking questions, so the only way for me to respond was to put it here. After that, it just became a habit. And often times, I reveal extra information in my replies that people might want to read to either try and guess what happens next, or to just keep them guessing. I'm glad you like this, and if you continue to review, which I hope you do, I will remember to respond through a PM. Additionally, if anyone else wants me to do this for them, just let me know and I will be happy to.
To anime-queen46:
I am so glad that you like Jake as a character. He is a great guy, even though as the story progresses, you guys might dislike him. After all, he does have a past with Jack romantically, and history likes to repeat itself sometimeā¦.
To Asuka Rae:
Thank you so much! I hope you continue to enjoy the story because it is going to be a wild ride from now on.
To theawsomest5:
I am glad that you like the way I write Jack and Bunny together and decided to give my story a chance. It is a fun experience and I hope you continue to enjoy the story.
That's all guys. I hope you enjoyed the story and continue to stick around. I will try and update as soon as possible. Review and, as always Ciao Snowflakes!
