"Castiel, what is the meaning of this?!" Hannah shouted at him furious. Her reason for her outburst was the woman that was standing next to Castiel wearing a preposterous outfit.
"Hannah...?" Castiel uttered surprised at the sudden appearance of his assissant.
Moments after he had summoned Saber, Hannah had barged in Castiel's office without knocking and her shock was kind of reasonable. She saw a woman in an outrageous outfit with a sword at hand standing right next to him, anyone would misunderstand the situation. There were primarily two reasons she reacted like this. Firstly it was because of the blouse which Saber was wearing; it was a breastplate made of white cloth which was so tight that you could easily discern the outline of her breasts. Saber was a C-cup with tone, round breasts. But that was not the only reason Hannah freaked out. Saber also wore reticulated stockings with long, black, leather boots up to her knee. She was also wearing a golden sash with black embroidered designs on it, a black, leather choker with a purple gem embedded in it, a leather gladiator's skirt and also a white mask which covered her whole upper face including her eyes.
"Castiel, can you please explain me who this woman is and why is she dressed like that?" Hannah trembled as she uttered those words. Saber on the other hand tilted her head in confusion.
"Calm down Hannah, she is a friend, I summoned her here, so she can help me find Dean and Sam." His effort to calm her down was futile though; hannah was too preoccupied with Saber's appearance to listen to anything that Castiel had to say.
"Allow me to explain the situation to that woman Castiel." Saber said in an emotionless tone.
"That woman...who does she think I am?"
Saber approached Hannah - sword in hand- and straightened her position. She turned her sword to face the ground and rested both her hands on the handle. Hannah couldn't help but notice the exceptonal craftmanship of te sword Saber was carrying. The sword was about one meter long; its blade had a peculiar silver-blue color and Hannah despite her vast knowledge of minerals in the human world couldn't recognize the materials of that blade. The dark-grey hilt of the sword was decorated with the five, purple gems which were similar like the one she had embedded in her choker. Hannah couldnt recognize those kind of gems either.
"As I understand, you must be a friend of Castiel. I believe that introducing myself to you shouldn't pose a problem to our cause or else I would have to kill you right where you stand" The tone of her voice didn't change throughout her sentence. She calmly stated that she would kill her if she wasn't that close to Castiel or posed any threat for her purposes.
"W-what? K-kill me? Will you let her keep talking to me like that Castiel?" Hannah snapped and glared Castiel with killer look who pretended not to see it.
Ignoring her outburst, Saber continued. "As I was saying, I am a servant summoned by Castiel in order to fight for him in the upcoming Holy Grail war. It is my duty to protect him even with my life. You can call me Saber which is my servant's class' name."
"Wait-wait-wait! What war? What is she talking about Castiel? I thought the war was over now that Metatron is in prison. I thought we were walking towards a peaceful era. Where have gotten yourself into this time?" Hannah's face expression was a mixture of anger, curiosity and surprise as she asked him that.
"That war is over and you are free to do whatever you wish. But for me unfortunately another war lies ahead. And it is a war I have to fight alone or more specifically with Saber." Castiel tried to calm her down, but Hannah wasn't willing to listen to his excuses.
"Let me get this straight, you are abandoning us once again so you can go fight to another crazy war. And not only that, instead of asking for our help you get a total stranger who is dressed liked a whore to help you." She was furious with him, Castiel knew it.
"What is a whore?" Saber asked curiously.
After making an effort to ignore Saber's question, Castiel turned his attention again at Hanna.
"Hannah please listen to me I can't ask for your help, because where I'm going is for absolutely personal reasons. The angels haven't anything to do with this may be selfish coming from me, but all I'm asking of you is to take care of things here as long as I'm away. I was planning on telling you about everything later, but you came at a wrong time and you misunderstood things."
Hannah pondered for a few moments what Castiel said, before giving her reply.
"Well, I might have overreacted a bit, but that doesn't make you right.! I'm not okay with you going to a war with a complete stranger as back up while you still haven't got back your grace. It is really dangerous!"
"Don't worry. I will be fine. She may not look like it, but she is in fact a powerful deity." Castiel said pointing at Nemesis.
"Her? A god? Which one?" Hannah asked.
But as Castiel was about to answer Nemesis stopped him. "I'm afraid you cannot know my true name. Only Castiel may know it. Even if you are his friend I can't say anything to you, because you may betray us in a moment of weakness." Nemesis stated without hesitation.
"I would do what?! Is that how little you think of my resolve?!" Hannah asked her angered.
"Maybe you are! It is because I don't know that I cannot risk letting you know of my name." Saber replied.
"Saber! Stop talking please!" Castiel intervened hoping to prevent an escalation of that fight.
"As you wish, my master!" Saber replied and silence filled the room momentarily, before hell broke loose.
" What kind of perverted, fetish language is that?! You force her to call you, her master?! I cannot believe what I'm hearing!" Hannah yelled at him.
"No...it's not-" Castiel tried to explain to her why, but she was not listening.
"No! You listen here! You always put yourself in danger and barely survive, by the skin of your teeth. Your luck is due to run out sometime. What if this is the last time I see you alive? And it's not only me! You have a duty to all of our brothers and sisters now. You have to take command and help us rebuild Heaven, not wander off to fight some random war for the brothers. And how do you know they are in danger in the first place? Did they contact you and asked for you help? Or is this just another one of your gut feelings?" She finished her angry monologue and took a amoment to catch her breath.
"Welll...?" She asked him again, seeing that Castiel was remaining silent.
"It is not that simple as did they ask for my help. No, the brothers haven't asked for my help and they don't intend to in the near future. Dean died in the showoff with Metatron and Sam's missing. He only left behind a note saying that he went on a journey to confirm Dean's death. It's impossible to locate him, because of the enochian symbols he drew on his body. I am aware that it may be difficult to understand how I feel, but I am worried about them. Dean and Sam are my second family after the angels. And as I would never abandon a fellow angel in danger, I won't abandon them either. Sometimes, we have to make decisions which may hurt our loved ones for the sake of someone else we care about. I don't expct you to understand the meaning of this saying right away, but-"
"What's more to understand? I am...I am...I am mad at you and worried that I will never see you again..." Hannah's voice softened as she uttered those last words.
Castiel smiled bitterly. "I know you are and it is completely justified. I know that human emotions are more of a burden than a boon to an angel who spent all his life acting based on orders and logic. But that's why I chose you specifically to say all these, rather than say it to any random angel. What I want for the angels is to learn how to think and act based on their own free-will and desires. You are the only one who have managed to express her feelings in a way that no other angel has or will in the near future. What you just said to me and what we did earlier is proof that you are changing and beginning to see the world with different eyes. So, I will ask you again. Hannah, will you please take care of Heaven until I come back? You are the only one capable of that right now." Castiel asked her with pleading eyes.
Hannah took a deep breath and exhaled relaxed before answering his question in her her usual, cool tone.
"I may not be capable of understanding human emotion and feelings as well as you do. There are still many things whch confuse me. For example why I got as angry at her - points at Saber- as I did with your careless decision to leave us. It all came naturally to me as I kept talking and I do not know why, maybe i nthe future I will have a more clear answer. Still do not condone with wahat you want to do, but I will help you.I will help our brother and sisters rebuilt Heaven whiler you're gone and while I may not know as much as about free will as you, I will do my very best to instruct them."
"Thank you!" Castiel replied earnestly.
"Also-" Hannah continued. "- if you are about to leave, you better take this." She reached for the pocket of her jacket and passed him a vial with a bright white, liquid in it.
"This is-"
"This is some extra grace I asked our brothers and sisters to donate in order to relieve the stress of your body. I was on my way here to give it to you when...well, that happened. Be sure to use it only if you are out of options. I won't be able to supply you with more where you are going." Hannah replied.
"I know...thank you, Hannah! This means a lot forme." Castiel thanked her with a sincere smile on his face. Hannah blushed a bit.
She then turned her attention to Saber. "Sorry for being so rude to you before, I don't know why I felt anger towards you while I barely know you. Ahem...I don't know where you are going, but be sure to keep Castiel safe at all times. There are people who need him and care about him here."
"Do not worry, I will make sure he returns to you alive. I have to admit though that you surprised me a moment ago with your understanding of the situation. Until now I never considered angels more than simple, magical creatures created only to carry out orders. Perhaps I should reconsider my opinion of your kind..." Saber replied nonchalantly witout realizing the rudeness of her remark.
"Who on Heaven's name is that woman anyway? Thinking so lowly of us angels? Not that we deserve more after all that happened, but still-
Hannah let out a snort "Hmph… I'm through arguing with you. I'm leaving. Have fun with your master!" She left and slammed the door behind with force.
"Wow This woman is incredibly skilled at infuriating people without even trying. She lacks common sense maybe even more so than an angel in that matter. I wonder what'sthe real story behind her myth is?" Castiel thought as he took a quick glance at Saber.
"So when are we leaving for Earth Castiel?"
"Are you impatient of causing a ruckus down there as well? We're leaving now." Castiel said as he opened a portal to Earth.
"Can I ask you one last thing before we go rescue your friend?" Saber asked curiously.
"Yeah, why not? It might save us from possible future misunderstandings."
"What does the word whore that you assistant called me earlier means?" Saber asked him.
"I'm surprised you don't know. I would assume that someone, somewhere must have called you like that sometime." Castiel answered with a hint of irony in his voice.
"Oooh!" Saber uttered surprised. "I know. It is an abbreviation for the word warrior and she pronounced it that way, because she lacks the proper verbal skills and mental capacity to remember how it is correctly pronounced. Hmm...interesting! Maybe I gave her too much credit as an angel before. I hope you don't turn out to be as mentally impaired as your assistant." Saber said decisively, proud with her decution skills and clueless once again about the negative, social impact of her comment.
"Oh Nemesis…!" Castiel shook his hand frustrated. " You and I will have to sit down and have a good, old talk one of these days about what you can say and what not. Or else this is going to be a much more difficult war than I had originally calculated." Nemesis nodded in silence without completely understanding what she had done wrong.
Fuyuki city, Sunday close to midnight, Fuyuki city hospital
"They have been Sakura for about twelve hours now. Shouldn't there be an update from a nurse? What if something went wrong?" Shirou mumbled worried.
"Relax Shirou, you too Rider, a heart transplant isn't like an appendix removal. It requires much preparation and time. They must take care of a lot of things before proceeding with the operation. An operation like that requires weeks or even months of preparation, so the patient's body won't reject the transplant during the operation. Sakura was brought in two days ago, but because of her situation they had to operate her right away. I am pretty surre that in order to prevent the worst they took the time for extra preparations." Dean calmly explained to both of them who for several hours now have been pacing up and down the hallway.
"Dean is right Shirou, we should calm down. besides, as long as I'm okay that means that Sakura is too, since she can still provide me with magical energy." Rider tried her best to calm down Shirou.
"Poor guy, it must be hell inside his mind. I can't blame him though, I and Sam were like that when one of us was in critical condition. But still we always had Cass there to help us, if we got injured. They have no one to help them like Cass did for us. Wonder where he is though? He didn't respond when I called him yesterday. I should try calling him now, a human life is hanging from literally a string." Dean stood up.
"Hmm…where are you going?"Shirou asked him.
"To make a call to a friend, he may be able to help with Sakura, I hope I can reach him though." Dean explained to Shirou who looked at him confused.
Shirou tilted his head. "You have a friend who can help Sakura? And you are telling me now?"
"Well... Yeah... I called him yesterday too, but he didn't respond, I hope he does now."
"But even if you reach him, when will he come? Does he live nearby?" Shirou asked.
"In a way. I'll explain more if I manage to get him to come down" Dean said and left them.
"Down? Down from where? What are you talking about Dean? Hey don't ignore me, come back." Shirou shouted at Dean who was turning at the corner of the corridor.
Dean looked around as to make sure no one was there. He stood still, lifted his head and looked at the ceiling.
"Hey Cass, it's me Dean again, where are you man? I was calling you yesterday and you didn't respond? I hope you are not having any trouble and it is just a communication problem. Anyway, I'm calling you because I need your help with something, I can't ask Sam because he is unable to do something about this and also I don't want him to involve him in my current troubles. Only you can help me pal.
I'm not calling you for myself., right now the one who needs your help is someone else. Please if you can hear this come to my location immediately or else an innocent woman and possibly many more people will die again." He finished his prayer to the Castiel.
He waited for a few moments expecting Castiel to show up anytime out of nowhere like he usually does and greet him.
"Hey Dean" He heard a voice behind him. Dean turned around in hope it was his friend, but it was just Shirou who had caught up with him.
His smile faded immediately "Oh...It's you…what is it?" he asked indifferently.
"Yeah, I'm happy to meet you too jerk." he grimaced at Dean's tone "So what happened? Did you contact your friend?"
"Of course, but he can't come because his wings are clipped" Dean replied ironically.
Shirou sighed disappointed "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Forget it, let's go back to Rider." Shirou nodded in agreement to Dean's suggestion.
But when they returned back to the place they were. They had to deal with something unexpected. Rider was down on the floor, flailing around like a fish out of water and holding her neck with both hands as if she was struggling for oxygen.
Dean run to her side. "Rider, Rider, hey what happened? Shirou call a doctor, she cannot breath."
But Shirou was frozen in place. He couldn't move. Dean remembered Rider's words from before.
"'as long as I'm okay, Sakura is too." The panicked voices from inside the operations' room unfortunately validated his suspicions. Something had gone terribly wrong.
He looked at Rider whom he was holding at his hands. She had gone limp with her hands and legs occassionaly twitching, her eyeballs had rolled up inside. he was still alive, barely. She seemed ready to pass out, yet Shirou was still pinned in the same position unable to neither speak nor move.
"Dammit! Cass come down here you son of bitch. Save those people. They have suffered enough, they don't deserve this shit. Please Cass...come and help them, please..." He knelt with his head touching the ground in a last desperate effort to call his friend, but it was futile. Castiel wasn't answering.
Then the panicked voices from inside the operation's room couldn't be heard anymore. Silence ensued. Dean lifted his head and saw Rider who was slowly dissipating into small purple lights. If it wasn't for her transparent figure anyone would have thought that she was sleeping peacefully.
He panicked "She is dying, I cannot let her die, not like that, what should I do? Maybe try to use CPR on her"
He tried pressing her chest with both his hands but to his unfortunate surprise they went right through her. Soon there would be nothing left of her. She would be gone, like she never existed in the first place. No traces at all, nothing to bury or burn, nothing. She would vanish into thin air just the way she appeared when she was summoned. That was the cruel fate that awaited each servant at the end of the Holy Grail war and they were all bound by it. Even if she tricked her fate for a while, ultimately her fate managed to find her way back to her and paid her back with the worst possible manner. Dying like that was extremely cruel, even for a servant.
"So that is the fate that awaits me at the end of the war." Dean mumbled lowly, hanging his head in desperation, having given up all hope of saving her now. He was all alone now, his brother wasn't there to help him and Castiel ignored all of his pleas; he had no one whom he could rely to.
About a minute had passed since Rider's figure completely disappeared from his hands. Shirou had fallen on his knees, crying silently with his head hanging; like a muppet who had its stings cut. Dean knew though that Shirou was already dead inside by now. He smashed both his hands on the ground furiousl; it was an instinctive move out of anger. Another person had died on his hands and he was unable to help her. Even though it wasn't his mistake he felt responsible for some reason. He closed his eyes hoping that all that was just a bad dream and he would wake up safe in his bed in the safehouse. His brother would yell at him for putting himself into danger, almost dying and also Cass would be there to congratulate and celebrate with them their victory over Metatron. He remained like this for a few moments, but then he felt something heavy on his arms, he opened his eyes, but the room was completely dark.
"What the hell? Power failure at this time?" He called Shirou "Hey Shirou, are you alright? I can't see anything. Where are you?"
No response. Shirou was still so shocked that he didn't even notice that the lights were out.
"What is this weight?" Dean moved his hands around in the darkness, trying to find out what was that thing he was touching. His hands traced the surface of whatever was in front of him and his hand bumped unto something soft.
"Hmm…? This feeling seems familiar." He immediately realized what it was that thing which he was touching. It was a human, more precisely a woman and that soft spot was her right breast. The lights then came back.
Dean was caught off guard with what he saw. "Rider! You are alive?! " Dean shouted in excitement. But she was unconscious, she didn't respond. He took his hand off her chest and checked her pulse to see if she was really alive.
It took a few moments for Shirou to snap back to his senses. "R-Rider is that you? A-Are you ok? If you are ok and you are really Rider then…."His eyes were red from crying silently all this time. His voice was trembling. He looked with hope at the operation's room's door.
The door opened and a doctor came out. He was bewildered to see two of them on the floor and Shirou wiping his teary eyes. He smiled gently at them. What he said made their hearts flutter with indescribable happiness "Sakura must have a guardian angel who protects her. Science can't explain what happened in there." H
"Cass, you son of a bich...If you ever make me beg like this again, I swear that'll…" He mumbled lowly.
"Excuse me sir who are you talking to?" The doctor who overheard Dean asked him.
"Nothing, just talking to myself."
Fuyuki city hospital's parking.
"Why did you not stay to greet your friend Castiel?" Nemesis asked him.
"Not yet, I have to confrim that this person is really Dean and not some impersonator." Castiel replied.
"But you answered to his plead used up a great portion of your borrowed magical energy in order to save that woman. We're in a war in case you have forgotten." Nemesis retorted.
"That's one thing and that's another. Protecting mankind is one my duties as an angel and I don't intend to forsake them for the sake of this stupid war. Besides I only participate in order to help my friends not to win." Castiel answered back.
'Hmm...you'd go that far for a friend even though that friend is an enemy servant whose purpose is to kill you."
"If it comes to that then I would know that this is not the real Dean, but until then I will believe in him and stay in the shadows observing him."
"So that's the plan for now? Stalking an enemy servant to see if he is friendly?" Nemesis asked with a hint of irony in her voice.
"Yeah...objections?" Castiel replied in an imposing tone.
"None...I hope you know what you are doing."
Meanwhile at the same time in the airport at the next town.
A flight had just arrived from San Francisco, there were few passengers, mostly regular people and a group of tourists. But among them, there was a man and a woman, they were both wearing business suits which looked expensive brand at first glance, but they were in fact cheap imitations. The man was tall and well-built. He had long brown hair and brown eyes and even though he had just arrived from a really long trip he didn't seem a bit tired. He was wearing a white shirt with a black tie; along with a dark grey jacket and a similar colored pair of pants.
The woman was of a normal size, she had long crimson hair and bright blue eyes. She wore a dark blue V-shaped blouse and a blue jacket buttoned with a single button at the stomach. Her nicely shaped legs were coming below her dark blue skirt and her elegant walking in high heels could make a lot of professional models turn green from jealously. Both of them were holding a suitcase. The woman spoke to her partner.
"So the war is taking place in the next town. When did you learn all of this considering you were so far away from here when it started?"
The man rudely answered "There is no need for you to know. Your job it to speak when you are spoken and do as you are told. Nothing else matters to you except for your mission. Understood?"
She stuttered "I-I only….b-but I just wanted to…."
"Silence!" The man barked.
"Yes…master. I'm sorry." She apologized and hung her head depressed.
The man clenched his fist furious, he wanted to punch her on the face for what she said just now; but he held back his urge as he realized there were many people around. He turned around and looked at her with a face full of contempt "I have told you many times not to call me like that while we are in public. Are you completely incompetent?"
"I'm really sorry I have angered you Sam; I promise that was the last time." She replied while trying to keep a straight voice.
"Let's hope so. Having to cooperate with a monster like you is enough trouble already." Sam's words were harsh and surely any person who would hear them would protest, but not her. She remained silent and accepted every insult her master was throwing at her.
"I'm sorry, if I cannot live up to your expectations Sam. I'm sorry for not being able to live up to my name as the Goddess of the hunt."
"Just shut your hole Artemis, I have no interest in hearing your excuses. We're here to find Dean what happened with Dean and nothing else. After that we're done; I couldn't care less about what will happen to you next. Whether you live or get killed is none of my business. Are we clear?"
Artemis didn't answer his question and looked away from Sam. "Are we clear freak?!" Sam repeated louder and angrier.
"Yes!" She uttered immediately and rubbed her eyes before Sam could realize that they were getting wet.
If you wonder why Castiel hasn't anwered so far, it was because the Heaven's gates were closed up until this day (See chapter 11; where he summons Saber).
Also, I am aware that at some point in Supernatural the brothers meet up with Artemis. Well, let's say that never happened, because that would create a huge plothole here and nobody likes inconsistencies.
