Chapter 14
"Is he going to be okay?" Blaine asked the second he saw Kurt's doctor walk out of the emergency room. The moment they had arrived at the hospital doctor's had taken Kurt away. Blaine had been pacing the waiting room getting several worried glances from patients and staff but all he could focus on was Kurt.
"We believe that his appendix is swollen, right now we have given him painkillers that will help reduce the swelling, it's not at bursting point yet so we don't want to do surgery for no reason. We are keeping a close eye on it, the painkillers are strong and have sedated him."
"Is...But he'll be okay?" Blaine whispered worried.
"The appendix is a really small part of us that we don't need, it causes us more bother then good really. If Kurt needs it to be removed then it is a standard operation that will take a few hours and will have him hospital for a day if that. But in most cases it can swell up a little but then with the right medication it goes away again."
"Okay." Blaine nodded slowly. "Can I see him?"
"Course, like I said the painkillers have knocked him out a little so he's just having a rest." She said gently. Blaine nodded again, all of a sudden unable to form any words. He followed her in and stared numbly at his husband. He hated how small he looked, how his pale skin blended in with the awkward white sheets. He walked over slowly, scared that any sudden movements might wake Kurt up and he'll be in pain again. He sat down in the uncomfortable green chair and tried to get himself comfortable, but it felt as though he was sitting on a rock. He reached out and took Kurt's hand in his, he always loved Kurt's hands; they were soft and delicate and just perfect.
"I love you baby, you're going to be okay." Blaine promised. "Devon is worried, he needs to give you hugs. The perfect medicine. I could do with a hug now too." Blaine breathed playing with Kurt's fingers. A part of him wanted Kurt to wake up now, even though it was just a painkiller induced sleep Blaine still panicked that he wouldn't wake up. The other part wanted him to stay asleep. As long as he was asleep then his lover wasn't in any pain.
Four hours later, and what felt like a dozen phone calls to everyone informing them about Kurt, Blaine was exhausted. He called Burt first, he insisted that he wouldn't need to fly out, Kurt would be okay, and would appreciate him coming later, but if there were any changes Blaine would let him know straight away. Blaine knew that no matter what he said, by the end of the week he would have his in-laws over again. Not that he minded. He absolutely loved Burt and Carol and the kids adored them. He phoned Ashley again, and told Devon not to worry that his daddy just had a sore belly and they have given him some good painkillers. Devon asked if Kurt would be coming home that night and Blaine said he wasn't too sure. He wanted him home, but knew the chances were he most likely had to stay. Next he phoned Rachel and Finn, telling them what had happened, they both said they would be there if they needed any help. The last call Blaine made was to Cooper. Cooper had asked about Kurt and made sure he knew enough and then he asked about Blaine. Everyone else had asked too, but with them Blaine felt like it was something they had to ask, deep down they did care but right now they just needed to care about Kurt. Cooper was different. Cooper promised he would be there for him. Cooper ended the call with the promise that he would be there within the hour and he would look after them both, and that was just what Blaine needed.
"Blaine?" Kurt's voice was groggy when he woke up.
"You're awake." Blaine said rushing up from the chair. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm...I'm in hospital." Kurt frowned. "Devon?"
"He's at home with the twins and Ashley. He's worried about you, we all are." Blaine breathed. "How you feeling?"
"It hurts, but not as much. What happened?" Kurt asked, he tried to sit up but winced in pain.
"Your appendix is swollen." Blaine said gently. "They gave you some good painkillers."
"They feel good." he said cutely making Blaine smiled. "Can I go home?"
"I'll go and tell the doctor you're awake." Blaine whispered and went to stand up but Kurt held his hand tighter. "What is it?"
"Don't go." Kurt said quietly. "I'm scared."
As Kurt said that the door opened and Cooper walked in, he had a bouquet of flowers and some grapes and a sheepish grin on his face. "Hey!" He smiled. "How you doing?"
"Cooper." Kurt smiled. "Those for me?"
"You bet." Cooper smiled and placed them on the table. "And these are for you too. It's what you do when you visit someone in hospital right."
"Right." Kurt nodded. "Thank you."
"How are you doing?" He asked as he sat down beside Blaine.
"Still a bit sore." Kurt sighed.
"Now Cooper's here and you're in...Well not safe hands, but you've got company I'm going to go and grab the doctor." Blaine smiled, he waited for a little nod from Kurt before walking away.
Once he was out of the room Blaine took a deep breath. Kurt was awake. Kurt would be fine. He found the doctor and said that Kurt was awake. The doctor said that was great and she would be in soon to do an ultrasound to make sure that the swelling was going down. Blaine nodded and headed back to the room, smiling when he saw Cooper entertaining Kurt with stories of a seedy one night stand. Blaine made a mental note to find Cooper a wife.
"Please stop corrupting him." Blaine smiled as he sat on the bed beside Kurt, glad that he didn't hear his husband make any noises of discomfort he just cuddled closer to him.
"Oh please." Cooper winked and smiled watching the two of them.
"Can I phone Devon?" Kurt said blinking up at Blaine. "If he hears me say I'm okay then he won't worry as much."
"Course. Here." Blaine smiled and handed him the phone. Kurt kissed his cheek in thanks and dialed the number.
Kurt spoke to Ashley for a few minutes before Devon was put on the phone. "Daddy are you okay?" Kurt hated how worried his little boy sounded.
"I'm okay buddy. I've just got a sore belly but the doctor's are being very good to me."
"I wanna give you the best medicine." Devon said and Kurt thought maybe he was about to cry.
"Oh I know you do. But I'll be home soon. And guess who's here."
"Doctor Ted?" Devon sniffled.
"No buddy he's from your telly show. But Someone you love even more." Kurt chuckled and looked at Cooper like please make him smile. Cooper nodded with a smile taking the phone from him.
"Who do you love more then Doctor Ted?" Cooper grinned.
"Uncle Cooper!" Devon screamed excitedly. "Uhoh. I woke up Cory!"
"Hi you. Move away from the crying babies and come and talk to me." Cooper laughed.
"Okay okay." Devon chuckled. "I miss you."
"I know, but guess who's going to come over tonight for dinner, and for breakfast tomorrow?"
"Doctor Ted." Devon giggled knowing that he was being cheeky.
"Well if you don't want me..."
"I do I do." Devon giggled.
"Well you gotta be good. I'll be there soon."
"Uncle Coop. Is my daddy really okay?" Devon asked softly.
"Course he is buddy." Cooper smiled softly. "Would I lie to you?"
"Never." Devon said in a serious tone. "Then there we go."
"Thanks Coopy." Devon whispered.
"Go and rest and I'll be there in about an hour." Cooper said and handed the phone back to Kurt.
"Hey, see that's good right. You have Cooper coming to stay with you."
"I know daddy. I love you." Devon said gently.
"I love you too buddy. I'll call later to say goodnight."
"Kay. Bye." Kurt hung up and looked at Blaine and Cooper and sighed.
"The doctor will be in soon to do an ultrasound." Blaine said to him.
"You'll stay right?" Kurt whispered a little scared.
"Course I will." Blaine promised. "I'm not going anywhere baby."
