Derek hadn't heard from Savannah since that day in his office but he did hear from JJ that her and Pen had exchanged words. He knew he was going to have a difficult time divorcing her. She wasn't going to let him go easy but he didn't want to be married to her and he knew if he didn't he have no chance of getting his family back. Pen still loved him he was sure of that, even though he had a hurt her. He never meant to do that. It took not being able to see or talk to her to realize how much he felt for her. Now he had to convince her his feeling were real. He could see the hurt in her eyes every time they talked.
Another problem was Spencer. He didn't want him caught in the middle but he was already there. He never thought Spence would have feeling for Penelope. He could see Hotch or Rossi helping her and not telling but Spence. They were friends, good friends and he never thought he would lie to him. He knew where she was the whole time. Someone was going to get hurt and he had a feeling that someone was Spence but he wasn't going to let that stand in his way. He wanted Penelope and he was going to get her.
His mother was in town and wanted to talk to them. He had an idea of what she was going to say but he wasn't sure. He also hadn't had the time to tell her about Savannah and his decision about his relationship with Pen. Derek knew she would be happy but he also knew she would be worried about what Savannah would do to Pen.
He parked his truck and walked into the restaurant and found his mother sitting in booth waiting for them.
"Mom, it's so good to see you."
"I missed you so much."
"I don't understand why you didn't let me come and get you from the airport."
"I know your busy with your job besides it was no bother." She said. "Pen is on the way but Spencer couldn't make it. Something about he giving a lecture."
"We all have to do them. I didn't remember his was today. Does he need to be here?"
"No but he's is with Pen so he should be."
He ordered his drink and caught up with the lives of sisters before Pen arrived. Sarah and Des were planning on making a trip within the next several weeks to come and see their nephew. They missed him so much. Pen walked in a few minutes later with D. Fran's face lit up when she caught sight of them.
"Here let me help you." Derek said.
She murmured thanks and gave the carrier to Derek and then hugged Fran.
"I've missed you Fran."
"I've missed you too baby. How's my handsome grandbaby?"
"Growing like a weed."
"He has a healthy appetite I take It." she says while looking at D in his car seat.
"He does. He's eating every 3 ½ hours and I have to supplement with formula."
"Does he sleep through the night?"
"He wakes up only once for a feeding but then goes right back to sleep." Pen said. "Did Derek tell you about his emergency visit?"
"He did." She said. "Is he feeling better?"
"He was back to his happy self the next day."
"That's good. Let's order and then we'll talk."
Food was ordered and D sleep through their meal. When they were done, Fran out her napkin down and looked at Pen and Derek.
"Derek has told me about the visitation agreement you have. I think it's reasonable but I also know how much Derek would like to have D overnight or on the weekend when he's home. I also know you won't allow that because of Savannah, which I understand. That being said I have decided to move here so I can be closer to my grandson but also so Derek can have his weekends. You don't have a problem with letting D stay the weekend at with me and Derek."
"You know I don't. Are you really moving down here?"
"While I'm here I will be looking at 2 condos."
"Mom, as much as I appreciate it, you don't have to do this."
"I know but I want to."
"What about your job?"
"I should have retired a couple of years ago. I didn't have a reason then but I have a reason now. My baby boys need me."
"What do Des and Sarah think?"
"They encouraged me to do this and they also want to move here but that will take time for them. They'll still live at the house and I will go back to visit and they will come here."
"You really have thought this through."
"I have and I think it is a win, win for all of us."
D chose that moment to start waking up and Pen got him out of his car seat and handed him over to Fran.
"Hey there baby boy, grandma missed you. Yes she did." D grunted at her while moving his head. "Are you hungry?"
"I have a bottle here for him."
Pen fixed his bottle and handed it Fran. She watched as her grandson greedily drank his bottle while Fran talked to him. Derek looked at Pen.
"Mom I have some things I need to talk to you about."
She looked up. "I'm listening."
"I'm going to go but if you like I can leave D with you. You can drop him off later."
"I would love that, thank you."
"I knew you would." She said. "There's two more bottles in his bag, just add the formula. Everything he needs is in the bag."
Pen kissed her son before she left. Derek watched her go and when the door closed behind her he let out a sigh. Fran looked at her son and knew something was wrong.
"Let's go back to my hotel and we can talk. I have time before I have to meet the realtor."
Derek paid for lunch and then helped Fran get D ready to go. He drove them to the hotel. When they were in the room, Derek took D out of his car seat and sat with him. Fran watched her son with his son.
"I made the biggest mistake of my life when I turned my back on Penelope. When I met Savannah she was beautiful, hot, and I really liked her. She saw my relationship with Penelope a threat. As much as I tried to reassure we were just friends, she didn't like. She's not the first woman to feel that way. When she asked me to keep my distance, I did it to help my relationship. I thought she was the one. I wanted her to be the one."
He kept looking at D, who had fallen back to sleep "I want my family. I want Penelope. I want my son. I'm going to divorce Savannah. She's going to fight me but I don't care."
"Savannah isn't just going to go away. She's hated Penelope from the start. She hates the fact that you have a son with the woman she hates. Penelope and D are caught in the middle."
"I know and I don't like it. I made a mistake when I married Savannah."
"You did but you also told me once she was your future."
"I was wrong." He said. "This little guy right here means more to me than anyone else. I would do anything for him, for Penelope. I want to be with him 24/7. I want to watch my son grow up. I want him to know how much I love him."
"Derek he already knows how much you love, even Pen knows. You have to think about Penelope and what she wants, what she feels. You broke her heart Derek. Penelope isn't even the same woman anymore. You betrayed her when you rebuffed her and then you married Savannah. How are you going to make her believe that you want her now?"
He laid D on the sofa and stared at him. "I already told her what I want. I already told her that I was going to divorce Savannah. She said that it didn't matter. What she felt for me was gone. I don't buy that, not for a minute."
"What happens to Spencer? He is your friend, you work together."
"Someone is going to get hurt and it's probably going to be him. He knows what I want and he said that he wasn't going to give her up without a fight. He loves her. He always has, since he met her but didn't act on because she was in love with me. I know he was there when she needed someone and for that I'm grateful but I love her and I want my family with me."
"Do you love her Derek or is it because she is the mother of your son?"
"You know the saying "you don't know what you have until it's gone", well it's true. I took for granted my relationship with Penelope and I screwed up. I never should have let anyone come between us. Now I have to convince her I want her and not just our son."
"Oh Derek just don't hurt her any more than she already has been. I wish you good luck but I'm going to stay neutral. You acted like an ass and only you can correct your mistakes."
"I know and I will."
Fran, Derek, and D went to look at the two condos and found the one she likes. It had a small back yard for D to run around when he got older. It was a 3 bedroom and was big enough for her family and wasn't too far from Pen's. She was schedule to move in two weeks and Derek said he would fly to Chicago, rent a U-hall and drive her stuff back. They were on the way to Pen's to pick up some things for D. Pen had decided to let him stay the night with Fran. Derek was also staying as well. When they arrived at Pen's, Derek saw that Spence was already there. Pen opened the door for them while Spence was in the kitchen.
"How was he?"
"Oh he was an angel for us." Fran said. "Are you sure you're ok with this?"
"I wouldn't have suggested it if I wasn't. I know he's in good hands with you." she said. "I packed a bag with his things and I also have some breastmilk for him."
She took D from Derek and went to sit on the sofa. She showered him with kisses and he loved the attention. Spence came in at that moment, greeted everyone and then sat next to Pen. He talked to D and Derek just watched and came to the realization that Spence loved his son.
"Did you pack the medicine, Penelope?"
"I need to get out of the fridge. Do you want to take his bouncer?"
"That's fine." Fran said.
"How did they house hunting go?" Pen asked.
"It went great. I chose the 2nd one and I will go sign the papers on Monday and can move in in 2 weeks."
"That's great Fran, I'm so happy for you. I'm really glad that D will have his grandma close by."
"I'm happy too. D will have his own room for when he comes over. Derek already said he would buy everything he needs."
"I have some things that I have double of, you can have those things. You don't need to buy him a lot, he has so much stuff. He has toys I haven't opened yet. I'll give you some."
"If it's ok with you Pen, I would like to get D back to the hotel before it gets late."
"OF course. Mommy's going to miss you D but I'll see you tomorrow. Are we still on for shopping?"
"Oh yes. I need to spoil my baby boy."
"We'll meet you at the mall entrance at 11. Is that ok?"
"We'll be there."
After hugs and kisses Derek, Fran and D left. With assurances that they would call if anything came up, Pen closed the door. She sighed because she knew that she would have to get used to Derek having D for the weekend or during the week. She had to prepare herself mentally so she wouldn't breakdown by not having her son with her. She had turned around and found Spencer staring at her. Now it was his turn to sigh.
"Penelope we need to talk."
