Two days have passed since they discovered the rest of the letters sent to Rusty. Two days since Sharon and Andy have left the break room with their situation uncertain. Taylor and Rios decided that they needed more time to evaluate Rusty's situation. In the meantime, he could stay at Sharon's with a patrol car watching their building.
That morning the team got a case, a limousine driver Dean Muller had been found murdered inside his car in a parking lot. Detectives Sanchez and Sykes were still down with Doctor Morales in the autopsy room, while a witness was waiting in interview room 1.
"Lieutenant…" Sharon turned towards Flynn. She would usually go with him to take the witness statement. At the last minute she fully turned towards Mike Tao "…Tao" she finished. "Could you come with me to interview the witness?"
Mike Tao looked uncertain, but then got up to follow his captain. "Yes Captain" They had all noticed the tension between Flynn and Raydor in the last couple of days, but they didn't know what to make of it.
Flynn watched them go away and shook his head. He suddenly felt a slap at the back of his head. "Hey" he turned around to see Provenza glaring at him.
"You're an idiot!" He hissed angrily.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about you, screwing up your relationship with Raydor, especially now when she needs you most."
Flynn looked around nervous. "Will you keep it down!" he whispered. "Why do you even care? You were against it from the beginning."
Louie Provenza sighed and sat on chair next to Andy's desk. "I'm talking as your friend here, and believe me, it's not easy for me to say this, but you two looked good together that Sunday. She makes you happy, why would you ruin that?"
"Do you even know what's happening?" Flynn frowned.
"I know it has to do with Rusty hiding those letters. I know you. You were probably mad and said something stupid…"
"Aren't you? The kid kept those letters from us. He could have put Tyler in danger"
Provenza closed his eyes trying not to lose his patient. "The kid made a mistake. Of course I was angry and disappointed, but he's still a kid, I know you did some crazy stuff back in the day…"
"I…" Andy shook his head. He was still feeling conflicted. He loved Sharon and he missed her like crazy. Those two days hadn't been easy with Tyler constantly asking for her between his cries and the guilt he felt knowing he had overreacted.
"Just listen… don't throw it all away because of some nutcase. Talk to her. There's always a solution. I know that you are scared for Tyler, but just imagine what she's going through right now. She could lose him. They could send him away." Provenza walked away leaving Flynn to deal with his thoughts.
It didn't take them long to solve the case. The victim's business partner soon confessed and the squad left for home relatively early that day.
It was just after dinner and Sharon was cleaning the kitchen while Rusty was hiding in his room. Things have been a bit tense, they were both worried about their future, Rusty still felt guilty for hiding the letters and even though she had forgiven him, Sharon was still a bit disappointed in him. Sharon was just about to go and relax in the sitting room, when she heard someone knocking at the door. She looked through the peephole and gasped. She took a deep breath before opening the door.
"Hey" she whispered at the man standing in front of her.
"Saon" Tyler exclaimed happily in his father's arms.
"Hello little one" she took him in her arms. "I've missed you so much" she kissed his forehead then she looked up at her lieutenant. "Hi" she said politely.
"Hi" he looked nervous. "May I come in?"
"Sorry" she stepped aside giving space to step inside and then closing the door behind him.
"I…" he sighed and stopped. "This was a lot easier on the walk coming here"
She gave him a sad smile. "Let's go outside in the balcony." She said. "Rusty is still in his room"
He nodded and followed her outside. Sharon sat on one of the chairs with Tyler on her lap. Andy looked at the both of them playing and making funny faces at each other. "He missed you." He simply said. "I've missed you too." He added in a whisper. "Look Sharon, I'm sorry. I was out of line the other day…"
"No Andy, you had every right to be angry and worried. You don't think I was scared too? I love Tyler, you know that. And I love Rusty. I want to keep both of them safe."
"Me too. I overreacted. The only one to blame here is this idiot who is writing these letters and Phillip Stroh since he's probably behind this, but since I can't get my hands on them yet, I've lashed at the first person available and that was you. I'm sorry, you know I can sometimes be a hot-headed jerk"
She chuckled. "Yeah, it wasn't the first time you shouted at me. I was kind of wondering where the old lieutenant Flynn had gone"
He kneeled in front of her. "I want to make it up to you. The last thing I want is to jeopardize our relationship."
She softy stroked his cheek. "Andy, it's okay. You acted like any worried father would have. I know you're scared for both Tyler and Rusty."
"But I should have been there for you." He shook his head still not able to forgive himself.
"You can be there for me now." She told him leaning her head down and gently caressing his lips with hers. Soon she couldn't control her emotions any longer. She had been strong for Rusty, not letting him see how the situation was affecting her, but she knew that with Andy she didn't have to be strong. She started sobbing and Andy put his arms around her. She hid her face in his chest and Tyler, who was still between them, was gently stroking her hair, sad to see the woman crying.
"Shh… it's okay Sharon." Andy told her gently in her ear. "Let it all out"
"I don't know if I can do this" she choked the words. "What will I do if they take him away from me?"
"They won't. We won't let them." He promised her.
"I can't lose my son"
"Hey" he slowly lifted her head and held her face in his hands, his thumbs drying the tears away. "You won't lose him. We will find this bastard and we will protect him until then. You're not alone, Sharon. You've got the team and you've got me. Okay"
She slowly nodded.
"Saon" Tyler said worriedly, tears in his eyes.
"Oh, I'm sorry little one, did I scare you?" she hugged him against her chest and then Tyler climbed on his feet, standing on her thighs and he kissed her cheek comforting her.
Andy smiled and kissed his son's head. "Are you still in limbo? No word from Taylor or Rios?"
She shook her head sighing. "No, still nothing"
"You know what I was thinking?" He got up from his kneeling position as he knees were starting to hurt. He pulled a chair next to hers and sat on it and he took one of her hands in his. "I think we should go on holiday"
"What?" she exclaimed confused.
"You, me, Rusty and Tyler. We need to go away, leave all this behind us for a week."
"Andy, we can't just leave together." She knew it was illogical and impossible for them to leave, even though she loved the sound of that.
"Why not? The kid has gone to school all summer, barely had a free day and you, you haven't taken a real holiday since you've joined Major Crimes." He was sure it was long before that. "A week. Nothing more"
"I can't take Rusty away while they're still deciding his fate. What if they think I'm kidnapping him or something? And what will people say if we take time off together?"
"Well, I was going to take ten days off anyway. Nicole will be going away for her honeymoon soon and in case of an emergency at work I can't ask her to look after Tyler. Just think about it"
She looked at him deeply in thought. "If I can get DCFS's approval to take Rusty out of state and I can get the idea approved by Chief Taylor, we could go to my parents' holiday chalet in Park City. It won't be as hot as here and there's a magnificent lake nearby."
Andy smiled at her and kissed her gratefully.
"Don't get your hopes up. There are a lot of 'ifs' to consider"
"Yes, but you are Captain Sharon Raydor. No one can stop you if you have something in mind"
And Andy had been right. It took a lot of convincing and manipulation, but Sharon got the consent to take Rusty away on holiday. Andy had already been off work for a couple of days so no one noticed their timing, and even if they were stating to figure out the change in their relationship status, they respected them enough not to comment about it.
"I've never been on a plane before" Rusty commented as he watched the planes take off and land from the enormous window of the airport.
"Scared?" Sharon asked him putting a hand on his shoulder. Rusty looked at her nervously. "Don't worry. It's going to be okay"
"When I suggested going on holiday you should have reminded me how difficult it is to travel with a toddler "Andy said joining them he had his back bent down while Tyler was holding on his fingers with both his hands and was walking in front of him. The diaper bag he had on his shoulder was nearly falling off.
"Let me take him" Sharon said while taking one of Tyler's hands in hers.
"Thank you" Andy put down the diaper bag and turned towards Rusty. "Hey, want to come with me to the gift shop? We could find something to do during the flight."
Rusty just shrugged and then started walking towards the shops. Andy and Sharon exchanged looks and he just rolled his eyes and mouthed "teenagers", making her giggle. Rusty knew that Andy was still angry with him for hiding the letters and he didn't know how to act around him anymore. He was still getting used to the idea of Sharon and the lieutenant dating and now they were all going on holiday together. He was a bit uncomfortable, they were more and more acting like a family, a real family, and he was scared they were going to take him away.
Sharon watched to the two men walk away and then her attention went back to the toddler "Hey my little man, do you want to see the planes?" she held him in front of her so he could see outside the window.
"Plane" Tyler repeated the word as he put both his hands on the window glass and pressed his face against it, his mouth wide open as he watched the big metal birds move in front of him.
"Yes, we're going on one of them" She leaned down and Tyler put one of his arms around her neck and rubbed his cheek against hers. Sharon's heart melted and she held him tight, stroking his back "Oh, you're such a cute pie."
"Your son is so adorable!" A woman sitting next to them said.
Sharon turned her head around and looked at the older woman who was probably waiting for their same flight. "Oh, he's not my son. He's my… friend's son…" she was getting used to people assuming that she was Tyler's mother, but explaining the situation was getting more and more difficult each time.
"Oh, sorry" the woman soon apologized. "But he certainly loves you like you were" she smiled at them. Sharon nodded back embarrassed and picked up Tyler so they could sit on the chair next to their bags. She rocked him in her arms as they both pointed at the different airplanes.
"We're back" Andy exclaimed sitting on the seat next to theirs.
"Dada" Tyler gurgled happily and crawled into his father's lap.
"Look what I got you" he pulled a Winnie the Pooh soft toy with a Dodger's shirt on out of a carrier bag.
"Pooh" the toddler exclaimed happily gripping the soft toy tightly.
Sharon smiled. "You're a softy… and you spoil him too much."
"I've missed his first year… I think I'm okay with a bit of spoiling" Andy grinned at his son playing happily.
Rusty was sitting on the chair at Sharon's right. "What did you get?" she asked him.
"A puzzle book for the plane" he shrugged. "I've brought my computer to play chess."
"I hope you're not planning on staying in front of the computer all the time" Sharon eyed him.
"No, I'll be watching TV too" he smirked.
They heard the announcement to their flight and they got up to the gate desk. Two and a half hours later they were inside a rental car and Sharon was driving towards her family's cabin. Tyler had slept for most of the flight, switching from Andy's and Sharon's lap. Their luggage had been quick to arrive and they were planning to stop first at a diner to eat lunch and then at a grocery' store to get supplies.
"Here were are." Sharon stopped in front of a big cabin. It was situated right in the middle of a big open space with trees scattered around it. Andy could see the lake nearby. It was a really beautiful scenery.
"This is great!" He commented getting out of the car.
"Yeah," Sharon sighed. It felt like ages since she last was there. "My most happy memories are from here" she put on her sunglasses. "Okay, I'll go inside and open the windows to get the some air. My mom said that she had asked someone to clean the place for our arrival"
Andy nodded. "Rusty and I will take care of the luggage." He bumped shoulders with the teenager and they got the bags from the trunk.
"Rusty, your room is downstairs on the far right." Sharon shouted from the kitchen. She opened the fridge to find out that it was on and that there were already some drinks inside. "That's strange." She muttered to herself.
Andy had left the groceries' bags on the kitchen counter before going back outside to set the impatient toddler free from his car's seat. She was putting the food away when she heard screaming and laughing and she shook her head chuckling.
"Saon" Tyler giggled happily.
She walked from behind the kitchen counter and saw Tyler running laughing, probably being chased by his father. "What is Dada doing to you?" Tyler hid behind her legs and peeked from behind them waiting for his father.
"Where is Tyler?" Andy appeared in the kitchen grinning and pretending he couldn't see or hear the toddler giggling.
"I don't know" Sharon smiled. "I haven't seen him"
"Really?" he raised his eyebrow playfully. "Do I have to get the information from out of you?" and he slowly approached her
"Oh, and what technique are you going to use, Lieutenant?" she challenged him smirking arms crossed in front of her.
"This" he started tickling her sides and Sharon squealed laughing. She tried to get away from his attack, but Andy kept tickling her. Tyler watched them delightful and he tried to join them in the game
"Andy" she breathed between laughter. "Please, stop"
He stopped but he kept his hands on her waist. "And what are you going to offer in return?" he teased her.
"This" she gently kissed him.
"Hmm… I don't think that's enough of a payment"
Her smiled got bigger and she kissed him again this time longer and deeper. "And now?"
"Still not sure" he whispered as her lips landed on his again and she laced her arms around his neck while he gently pushed her against the kitchen counter. She was nipping on his bottom lip while asking entrance with her tongue, a moan vibrated in her chest.
"Mom!"
