'I think that sometimes, I will never understand some British customs at all.' Chris mused to Neve who was chuckling away at this remark as she held a polystyrene cup filled with coffee to her lips.
'Sometimes, even the Brits don't understand the likes of this. What you see here is mainly for show, it's all been lost in translation at some point."
'But still, this entire night is dedicated to the capture and eventual execution of a man involved in the Gunpowder Plot. Celebrating it every year is a bit, weird when you think about it.' Chris mumbled.
'I suppose so. I think it's just a good excuse to come stand in a park in the freezing cold, eating barbequed food you should be eating in summer whilst staring at a big fire and colourful explosions.' Neve said with a hint of sarcasm before she started chuckling again.
November the Fifth. Chris and Neve had a few days off from work before going out for a mission on the sixth departing to Syria; a mission which they would be working together again for the first time in a long time. Hopefully though it would be quiet after it was over as Christmas was drawing near. Chris and Neve had decided to come out for the evening and watch the fireworks in a park near where Neve lived. Matt had turned up too with his girlfriend and her niece and nephew who were busy running around playing with all the other children who were there. Matt had been going out with his girlfriend for about four or five months now.
Neve was surprised how he managed to keep it quiet for so long especially from her. Though she often wondered why he had kept it quiet. Neve figured it was because he didn't want mocking as his track record with women wasn't exactly something to be proud of. This one had stuck around though after she found out what Matt did for a living. Her name was Jemma; a petite little blonde who worked as an accountant to some big computing company in London.
Neve got along with Jemma quite well and was always there whenever she had questions about Matt and his job. She seemed really in to him which never happened. Normally Matt would date a girl for a short while then as soon as they found out his profession, they would high-tail it out of there. Jemma often looked after her sisters children and they got on famously with Matt who adored kids. The younger of the two, the little girl named Amy loved Neve to bits. Sometimes when Neve would go around to see Jemma for a coffee and a chat; Amy would always come over and sit on Neve's knee at the table with her colouring in book or drawing pad, sometimes even a book she had brought back from school.
Jemma and Neve would talk away about work and what they'd been up to, but every so often Amy would interject with some witty remark. She was really quite clever for a kid who was barely past five years old. One afternoon earlier that week, when she heard that Neve telling Jemma that they were going to Syria; she asked if she was going to help all the children out there who had lost their homes and parents.
'Well me and Uncle Matt are going to do what we can.' Neve would say to her.
'Are you going to be okay? Because, I saw on telly that they were um, using those non-biologital thingies.' Amy asked as she looked up at Neve from her colouring book.
Neve smiled at Jemma at Amy's little mistake. She knew what she was talking about though.
'We'll be fine. But that's why me and Uncle Matt are going there, we're going to stop all the bad people from using all that horrible stuff.'
'Oh that's good.' Amy replied then went back to her colouring in; deciding that Ariel the Little Mermaid in her colouring book would look much better with a red tail instead of a green one.
Thinking about that; it reminded Neve of a conversation she had with Chris a short while ago about having kids. They hadn't even been together a year yet but they were both at that age where other couples would've had kids by then or were planning on having them. They agreed that whilst kids would be nice, it wasn't for them right now. Not with their jobs and not with the state of the world that they knew. It wouldn't be fair bringing a child in to world with their circumstances. They were happy as they were right now.
Neve snapped back in to the real world after her daydreaming. Chris was stood behind her with his arms round her waist. She looked to her side where Matt and Jemma were stood with Amy and her brother Jack; who were playing with sparklers as they looked up in to the sky to watch the fireworks erupt in to streams and swirls of bright colours.
'I could just stay here forever watching this.' Neve sighed.
'You sure, it's quite cold?' Chris grinned.
'I'm never cold with you Chris you're like a bloody radiator!' Neve laughed as she squeezed his arms around her.
That was November the Fifth though. Now; Neve and her team as well as Chris, Piers and a few members of their own team were in the thick of it in Damascus starting their mission. They were to locate and detain an Israeli-born, British educated man by the name of Martin Eshkol. He was currently in Damascus trying to sell his products, reports of which said he had acquired samples of the T-Virus during his shady business deals and was looking to offload his products to whoever happened to have the most money.
Eshkol picked a fine place trying to sell his stuff in Syria what with all the conflict going on. It took a long time trying to track him down as there was not much in terms of CCTV surveillance in Damascus that could be hacked in to; but some clever positioning and some patience soon got the B.S.A.A. on track. It was Piers who was situated up on high who spotted Eshkol who just happened to be walking near the building he was staking out. Reports had also said that he was on his way to meet with a potential buyer.
'Captain, Major. I've just spotted Eshkol. He's walking past the Japanese Embassy opposite my current location. He's wearing a beige suit, beige hat and he appears to be carrying a small aluminium case too.'
Neve heard everything through her earpiece as she casually strolled down what seemed to be a street containing a few high-end designer stores. She pulled her PDA out of her pocket to check her map to see she wasn't far from where Eshkol was spotted. The streets were fairly quiet at the moment as many people had taken shelter after a recent car bomb attack. The B.S.A.A. had been given special permission to enter Damascus by various agencies and were working in conjunction with UN aid and peacekeepers; though the mission they were on was to be kept on the down-low. The few people that were around just seemed to be going about their everyday lives, even though the entire city was a warzone. Some folks were still striving for some sort of normality.
'Major, Captain. I've spotted a man lingering in an alleyway just at the side of a small café near my current location.'
'Thanks Matt.' Neve quietly talked in the microphone she had hidden in her jacket collar. 'Keep an eye on him, I'm nearly at the café on the west side.'
'Roger.'
'Major I'm closing in from the North of the café.'
'I can just about see you Captain. Okay guys, as soon as we see anything happen; we move in. Got it?'
'Roger.'
Neve took a deep breath as she heard the team reply to her in unison through her earpiece. She slowed down her walking pace as she neared the café and the alleyway Matt had spotted the suspicious looking man lingering in. Neve casually leaned up against a wall and reached in to her jacket pocket and took out her cigarettes, swiftly lighting one when she eventually found her Zippo in her other pocket. She had Eshkol in her sights now and Piers had confirmed that he could see her and that it was definitely Eshkol she was looking at. Piers could see Neve glance up in his general direction atop the building Piers was perched on with his sniper rifle and gently winked. Piers took this as a sign for him to make his way down to street level.
'Major I can see Eshkol making his way up the alleyway now, the other guy seems to have noticed him.' Matt said over the radio. Neve up righted herself from the wall and started walking toward the café and in the direction of the alleyway. She spotted Chris walking down in the same direction as her from the left side. Everybody kept out of sight until the very last moment when Matt gave the signal to move in when Eshkol and his strange friend finally made contact.
Neve and Matt drew their guns and ran toward the two men; Neve thrust the barrel of her USP in to the back of Eshkol's head whilst Matt did the same with his gun on the other guy's head. Chris ran up and swiftly grabbed the arms of Eshkol and drew them behind his back as Neve shoved her gun in to the belt holster she had at her lower back. She reached her hand in to Chris's coat pocket and fished out a pair of handcuffs in order to restrain Eshkol. As soon as he was cuffed, Chris took out his spare cuffs and did the same with Eshkol's contact.
'Well it looks like you two are under arrest.' Chris said to the two men. Matt still had a hold of the random guy Eshkol was meeting and they would soon find out who he was. Chris however took Eshkol out of Neve's hands. This mission went as well as it could have. With these two in custody, it wouldn't be long now before the entire team were back in Germany chilling out at the bar after a long, hard day at work.
