"Hi, baby. How was the movie?" Olivia smiled when Jade walked through the door, pleased that her daughter was home exactly on time.
"It was good. I love Sandra Bullock." Jade kicked her shoes off.
"So did Mom. Shoes, young lady." Olivia warned sternly, motioning toward Jade's shoes lying haphazardly in a pile, just waiting for someone to trip over them.
"Sorry." Jade quickly put her shoes away properly.
"Nanny and Papa should be here soon. Did you straighten up your room like I asked you to?"
"Yes, Ma'am." Jade responded honestly.
"Good girl. Pull your hair back and come help me in the kitchen, please."
Jade located a hairband and pulled her long auburn locks into a ponytail. She loved helping in the kitchen, but had learned years ago that she needed to pull her hair back when she was cooking, after Calvin gagged on a strand of her hair that had found its way into the food. Everyone sitting around the table had a good laugh about it. Jade located Mom's recipe box and looked through it until she found the recipe she was looking for - Mom's vegetarian lasagna. Mom had been teaching her to make it before she was shot, and afterwards, Jade practiced until it came out perfectly. It was her way of honoring Mom's memory and she made it every time Nanny and Papa came to visit.
There was a knock at the door. Olivia dried her hands on a towel and went to open it.
"Oh, my God!" Olivia exclaimed after a split second.
"Surprise!" Calvin stepped through the door into the apartment, followed by his grandparents.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming home?!" Olivia laughed happily, hugging her son.
"I wanted to surprise you. I called Nanny and Papa and we met up at the airport." Calvin grinned, looking sharp in his uniform and buzz cut.
"Calvin!" Jade squealed and ran from the kitchen, jumping into Calvin's arms and wrapping her legs around his waist like she used to when they were kids.
"Hi, sis!" Calvin laughed, catching his sister just in time and stumbling slightly. "All right, all right, get off me."
Jade obediently put her feet on the floor and kissed her brother's cheek before moving to greet her grandparents.
"Hi, doll." Nanny smiled, kissing her granddaughter's forehead.
"Hi, Nanny. Hi, Papa." Jade hugged her grandmother and then leaned over to give the same to her grandfather.
"Hi, Mom and Dad." Olivia let go of her son to greet her in-laws.
"Hi, sweetheart." Paul and Nancy Cabot greeted their daughter-in-law.
"I just put the lasagna in the oven, so dinner will be ready in about an hour." Jade informed the crowd.
"Oh, good. Mess hall food gets old real fast." Calvin pulled a face and everyone laughed.
A few days later, the grandparents had gone home, but Calvin was still on leave and was enjoying spending time with his mother and sister. One afternoon, the siblings were coming out of the bookstore when a flash of blonde hair disappearing around the corner caught Jade's eye. Just as quickly as it had been there, suddenly it was gone.
"Did you see that?" Jade blinked, staring in confusion.
"See what?" Calvin looked around, but saw nothing.
"Never mind. I-I think I'm just seeing things."
"You're finally losing it, little sister." Calvin teased, throwing his arm around Jade as they walked down the street together.
But Jade continued to see flashes of blonde hair everywhere she went, and became convinced that she was being watched. By who and for what reason, she didn't know, but she was scared to death.
Olivia jumped out of bed practically without waking up, and all but ran to her daughter's bedroom, turning on the light and scooping her screaming child into her arms.
"It's okay. Mama's here, baby. Mama's here." Olivia cooed as she cuddled and rocked her daughter. This was the third night this week that Jade had woken up screaming in the middle of the night, something she hadn't done in years.
Jade clung to her Mama as tightly as she could and sobbed, practically climbing on top of her. Jade was getting too big to sit on her Mama's lap, but Olivia wasn't about to deny her child the comfort she so clearly needed. Jade had reverted back to the scared little girl that Olivia found in front of the coffee shop all those years ago. Just like then, Jade couldn't bring herself to properly communicate what was wrong, so she did the only thing she knew to do and she screamed.
Calvin came walking into the room in his boxer shorts, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His leave was up tomorrow, and he felt horrible leaving his mother and sister in such a heartbreaking predicament, but he trusted his Mom to get it figured out. She always did.
For the third time in her life, Jade's world came crashing down around her, and it came in the form of a ghost. She was out on a date with Dick, and they were walking to Dick's car, laughing and joking, when a figure stepped out from the shadows.
"Hi, sweetheart."
Jade stopped dead in her tracks and grew pale as a sheet. She let out a blood-curdling scream before she fainted. Dick moved like lightning and caught her before she hit the pavement.
"Who the hell are you?!" he demanded protectively.
"My name is Alex Cabot. I'm Jade's mom."
