Chapter 7 of; 'Prison'
Crucified
Her eyes widened, her mind a web of thoughts.
How was someone like her capable of preforming something that she thought only a handful of people in the world could do?
Something only Oliver Davis could do…
"Psychometric…? That's not even possible…" She whispered voice trembling against her will.
Naru's eyes narrowed peering at the brunette before kneeling down beside her, "Have you done anything like this before…?"
She shook her head, "No… never…"
"How did you do it…?"
She didn't answer.
The world was spinning uncontrollably and her eyes burned.
She was confused and scared and homesick all at once.
She missed Japan and the peace it brought with it.
Her limbs shook uncontrollably Naru's voice asking her questions she could neither hear nor answer. Her head hurt and her heart was pounding in her chest.
A wave of nausea washed over her as the girl heaved hand against her mouth attempting to swallow the bile. The acid burned her throat numbing her senses making it impossible to ignore. She moved her body to the side on her hands and knees spewing whatever was in her stomach to begin with.
Hands against her head pulled her hair out of her face while hands rubbed her back reassuringly. She could vaguely hear him whisper comforts but just barely over the sound of her head throbbing.
She cried out, tears streaming down her cheeks heaving heavily.
"… I'm so scared…" she cried hands on either side of her head trying to block out the ringing.
She was so tired… so sick.
She could feel hands under her legs pulling her body up her head lulling against his chest.
She knew she probably looked disgusting and reeked but it didn't matter.
All she wanted was sleep.
All she wanted was peace.
Japan.
She closed her eyes allowing herself to fall into the comfort that was the darkness. Allowing it to take over every part of her being enveloping her in warmth.
…
Naru had yet to process what the girl had just done.
Something that took others years to master. A skill that had taken him years to perfect, she had done unconsciously.
She had had a psychometric vision… something the girl had never done before.
It was more than clear to him that the girl's powers were growing far faster than any of them had anticipated.
Too fast.
Dangerously fast.
He needed to talk to both Lin and his father about this. To figure out just what was happening to the girl before it was too late.
He placed a hand against the girl's forehead, drawing his hand back quickly.
She was burning up!
"Mai!"
She ignored him her shaking form and boiling skin burning against his own. He need to get help quickly but how?
The base was all the way at the other end of the building and he had forgot his cellphone on this desk.
Brilliant
The scientist brushed a few stray hairs out of her face using his sleeve to wipe the sheen of sweat that had formed on her forehead.
Pulling off his jacket her threw it over her body before Sliding his hand under her legs he pulled her body up with practiced ease. The girls head lulled against his chest the heat of her forehead against his semi bare chest only further reminded him of the severity of the situation. He needed to get help now but it was more important to help cool her down.
Quickly.
Eyes scanned the area for something he could use to put her down and fix this mess. Locked cells littered the walls all of which contained a set of bunk beds and blankets.
He turned around looking for an open cell.
There!
At the far end of the wall he could an open cell with not only blankets but a set of extras.
All but running to it he placed her in the bed pulling her arms through the arms of his jacket before setting the thick blankets atop of her.
Placing a hand against her forehead he nodded at himself. While her temperature was undoubtedly dangerously high he could sense a fluctuation of sorts. It seemed to be just a little lower… but then again that could have just been his mind playing tricks on him.
His mind was a mesh of unstable thoughts.
Should he leave her here and go get help?
But what if something were to happen?
This was a men's prison and seeing a fragile girl in bed was one way to attract the attention of the opposite sex.
So would he just pick her up and run to base?
No, the motion would undoubtedly make it worse.
But if she stayed here she could possibly….
She could…
No!
He wouldn't let that happen.
No.
He couldn't let that happen. He refused to allow anything happen to the girl… she was his and no one else's.
He ran a hand through his hair waiting for him mind to calm down before attempting to rationalize the situation.
Mai may as well be on the brink of death…
She needed to get to a hospital… but how?
Wasn't this a hospital?
Standing quickly Naru paced uncontrollably his heart pounding against his ribs.
He needed to get help he needed to save her.
To tell her what he truly felt… to apologize for everything and anything…. Her need to tell her he…
He heard her moan before wide brown eyes glazed over searched the room for his form.
Running to the bed he placed his hand against her brow, still hot.
"… Naru…?"
"I'm right here" He whispered, "Don't worry."
She nodded squinting against the darkness, "I can't feel my arms or legs… Naru what's happening."
"It's just a side effect… it'll go away as soon as we get help. Just calm down and breathe in and out slowly. I promise I'll go and get help as soon as I can. Okay?"
"Okay."
Silence.
Oh, how he dreaded the silence especially when she was near. It wasn't too long ago that he had welcomed the silence with open arms dreading the sound the cacophony of voices.
It was like… it was always an adventure with her by his side. Always something to say something to talk about.
And it was times like these that truly scared him. Times where he feared that he could never hear her sweet and sultry voice again.
Times when he feared that maybe it would be the last time he saw eyes as pure and innocent as hers.
"Hey Mai."
"Yeah?"
He could hear the weakness in her voice but he needed to keep her awake. At least until the others realized that they had been gone for far too long and came looking for them.
"Tell me a story."
The girl's eyes widened a fraction, "The great and powerful Oliver Davis wants ME to tell HIM a story?"
He nodded, "What's so wrong with that?"
She giggled softly, "Any suggestions."
He smiled running his fingers though the brown halo that had formed around her head. "How about your father."
She shrugged, "I don't remember much."
"Just tell me what you can remember."
He figured that maybe if he set her to a seemingly difficult task that maybe its keep her awake, at least until help arrived.
And all at once Yasu's words suddenly made sense.
He continually hurt her… constantly screwed up their already doomed relationship.
He didn't deserve her.
Didn't deserve someone as beautiful and perfect as her.
He didn't deserve Mai.
"He was strong and really tall."
He chuckled, "Unlike you?"
She nodded, "Yeah… he was muscular but not too much. He had dark hair and brown eyes. Tan skin and the most brilliant smile that I had ever seen."
He nodded at her to continue.
"He had an amazing sense of humor and told me stories all the time."
"Like?"
"The traveler and the King."
Naru raised a brow, "I've never hear that one, what's it about?"
She smiled sitting up slightly leaning against him craving the warmth, "Once upon a time there was a traveler who wondered though the country in search of rare items to purchase. He'd never sell them… always keep them."
"A hoarder?"
Mai chuckled, "Of sorts. Anyways one day he was traveling when he saw a beautiful orchard of apples. The man was starving and very thirsty and considering the amount of trees and apples he doubted the owner would turn down a man like him. And even if he did the man would simply offer him one of his treasures. The man reached up and grabbed the ripest apple he could see and took a bit out of it. It was the most delicious fruit he'd ever tasted."
Her voice was growing weak and her shivering had gotten worse. He was afraid… no terrified, but he wouldn't tell her that.
"Keep going."
She nodded, "Its skin was a vibrant red and the apple was a gushing with the sugary liquid. All of a sudden he heard a voice telling him to stop. The traveler looked up to see an old man on a cane walking towards him. The old man looked at the wonderer slowly then asked, 'what is your name?' The boy stood tall, 'Maximus.' The old man nodded 'well, Maximus do you know who owns these trees?' The man shook his head, 'I do not.' The old man shook his head, 'the king of this country my boy. The kind of our country loves but two things His daughter and apples.'"
"That's the strangest combination of things to like."
Mai pushed him lightly, "You're ruining the story."
He chuckled, "Alright keep going…"
She shook her head, "Nope I think you've had enough for one day… besides I'm tired."
Naru panicked.
"No Mai I need you to stay awake. I need you to finish the story!"
The girl shook her head burrowing herself further into the warmth of the blankets, "I'm freezing."
He stood up quickly grabbing the blanket from the bed above it before laying it on top of the girl. His eyes scanned the room searching for something he could use to warm the shivering girl. Dropping to his knees his eyes scanned the area under the bed before landing on something that refracted the light.
Something small and silver.
A door handle.
The lights above him shattered causing Mai to scream as fragments of glass showered over them. Standing quickly he threw himself over the girl keeping her from getting hurt.
"Mai… there's a door under the bed."
Her eyes widened lips slightly drawn apart, "A door…? John!?"
"Maybe. I need to move it." Nodding she pushed herself off the bed slowly jumping out holding on to him.
He grabbed a hold of her arms slowly walking her to the other side of the room before settling her down against the floor, "Is this okay?"
She nodded breathing in and out slowly, "Yeah…" Her voice was soft, delicate. Unlike its usual spunky and fiery nature.
She was in pain he could tell by the way her body was hunched over and the sweat covering her body. Grabbing the blankets he placed them over her body before pulling his sleeves up and grabbing a hold of both sides of the bed slowly pushing it out of the way.
It was heavy considering the wood used to create it but after a few minutes he'd managed to completely uncover the door. He leaned down twisting the door handle before pulling the door up.
He was met with the smell of rotting flesh and formaldehyde.
"What does it look like?"
He turned walking back towards the brunette, "It's a cellar of sorts. I don't think we should go down with you like this. Maybe we should get you back to base if you're feeling better."
She shook her head stubbornly throwing the covers off her body and standing up, "That's ridicules! Why would we go all the way back to base when John could be just under our feet!?"
Naru shook his head at the stubborn girl, "Mai you're not in the right condition…"
"When am I ever!?"
He raised a brow, "Touché." Sighing the man gave in turning around before kneeling down, "Get on my back and I'll carry you down. If you feel sick or unable to continue you MUST let me know alright."
She nodded securing her legs around his waist. Standing up he nodded as the girl slid her arms around his neck securely.
"Ready?"
She nodded, "Yeah."
…
The stair way was dark and eerie.
It reeked of mold ad smells she couldn't describe.
She was freezing but wouldn't tell him that.
He was looking for any excuse to take her back to base. He had this image of a fragile little sixteen year old stuck in his head.
A version of her she had left far behind.
At nineteen Mai was no longer a fragile sixteen year old.
Her bones were no longer protruding and she had filled out quite well.
She had become a woman, not some innocent child.
She was sure Naru could feel the heat of her skin against his own but she didn't care. Not now, not ever.
She was so close to finding John… he was only a stair case away from her and she would stop at nothing to get him back.
The burning of her skin against his had long gone and she no longer felt the anxiety spike within her every time they touched.
She no longer felt the burning sensation of skin on skin contact.
She couldn't go as far as to say it didn't bother her but it didn't as much as it once had.
"Up ahead…" she whispered, her breath fanning against the skin of his ear.
He nodded adjusting her position before continuing.
Light form a door up ahead was their only source of light.
The sound of Naru's footsteps against the ground the only sound they could hear in the emptiness of the room.
The scent of blood crept up into her nostrils and her stomach clenched a feeling of dread settling within her.
The more sane part of her told her to turn back now while she still had the chance but she just couldn't.
Not when her friend could be dead.
She needed to know.
Naru paused before the door hand against the handle.
The door was stained with a dark substance of sorts. The wire covering the midsection streaming light from within the room.
"Ready?"
She nodded against him inhaling slowly, "Ready."
…
The last thing she had expected to see was a crucifix.
A large one at that.
The last person she expected to see in the center was the priest himself.
Her eyes widened breath caught in her throat.
What had happened…?
John laid deathly still in the middle of a crucifix hands and feet nailed the way she only assumed Jesus had been.
A string of blood from his lips down to his chin dripping onto a puddle on the floor was all she could see.
There were no signs of his chest moving.
His naked framed plastered onto the frame like some kind of sick joke.
Around the crucifix was a summoning circle of sorts. An array of lines mismatched in pattern and angle drawn out in what she assumed to only be blood.
She wanted to scream but her voice was lost.
Her eyes burned and her stomach curled even tighter.
Naru's hold against her tightened and she knew he was thinking the same thoughts.
John was no longer among the living.
