Chapter 14: The girl who knew too much
"Just one more battle and this will all be over." Miyu let out a sigh as Kelly's witch labyrinth formed around her and Mel. She turned to see Mel hugging her legs and crying into her knees, she was holding her soul gem. "You're pathetic." Miyu said glaring at Mel.
"Why haven't you killed me yet?" Mel said raising her head.
"Because you deserve to suffer just like all the countless magical girls you forced into despair." Miyu turned around and stomped her foot on the ground, similarly to how Mel had broke Arzoo's soul gem. "You don't deserve to have the easy way out."
Mel looked away from Miyu. Of all people this was the magical girl who out smarted her. She was not special in anyway. Her powers were nothing out of the ordinary she couldn't manipulate time, control minds, and summon creatures to fight for her not even something as simple as summoning multiple weapons. The incubators wouldn't even waste their time on her she was just normal everyday selfless girl who had made a wish only to protect her friend.
"Hey Miyu can I ask you something." Mel said in a desperate voice.
"What is it?" Miyu growled.
"If you could have any wish granted, would you? Even if it dangerous?" Mel said repeating the question she had asked Miyu the first day they met.
"Yes." Miyu replied simply.
"Your instinct told you to wish for something selfish instead of a selfless wish, many people wish to make someone happy or wish a pet to life." Mel tilted her head a bit. "Others wish to see someone important to them or to have everyone love them." Mel said standing up.
"Where do you and I fit?" Miyu asked.
"Magical girls like us are different." Mel stared at Miyu. "We made our wishes to protect someone we cared about. A selfish wish for the benefit of another. We could have wished for anything else and we would have been in a different situation."
Miyu took in a deep breath and said, "We aren't going to accomplish anything sitting here doing nothing."
Miyu looked at Mel once more before running off the fight the witch. Mel was not some horrible crazy evil mastermind she thought Arzoo's killer was. Mel was a lost confused girl who learned too much about the magical girl system. Mel seemingly had snapped out the shock from seeing her sister become a witch.
She had been through so much. Her parents' deaths right before her eyes, suffering in a mental institute for years and becoming a magical girl to save her sister. She could have wished for anything else her story would be different.
She dusted off her skirt and wiped tears out of her eyes. Miyu looked at Mel and saw that she was not always evil she was just a magical girl stuck in this cruel system like she was.
"I wish I knew everything about Magical girls." Mel chuckled a bit. "I would do anything take back that sentence."
Without another word the two magical girls walked through the witch's labyrinth on what seemed like an invisible bridge. They could see through what they walked on as if they were walking on air. The scenery was filled with pure white flowers similar in shape to tulips and daisies. The sky above them was full of what seemed to be red threads, some shorter than others.
Among the flowers where familiars. There was two types, white angels and red demons. They we're spherical shaped with their respective wing shapes. They were quite cute as like something a young child would sleep with or not. The angels had scissors and the demons carried thread spindles on their backs.
"I think we'll be safe from them as long as whatever we're walking on holds out." Mel said looking below them.
"Shut up you idoit do you want them to notice us." Miyu glared at Mel.
Suddenly the path beneath them and they fell to the garden below them, crushing numerous flowers below them. The familiars turned around and angels marched towards Miyu and Mel.
"Don't you have a power that tells you about witches and familars?" Miyu said reading her weapon.
Mel nodded her head and stared at the familiars. "Atropos a cute yet aggressive angel minion who cuts their enemies lives with scissors. Also Clotho the peaceful demon familiar who will not attack unless it sees an Atropos being attacked." Mel said lightly touching the wings attached to her soul gem causing wings to spring from her back.
"We can take them." Miyu said shaking her head noticing that Mel was going to use her wings to escape.
"But once we fight the Atropos the Clotho will attack us." Mel responded. "It's best to run away them and focus on the witch."
Ignoring Miyu started swatted the angel familiars away as if they were nothing. "I pictured the antagonist of my story not being such a wimp." Miyu laughed a little bit. "Take a chance and fight."
"But there is no reason to fight them it's a waste of our energy." Mel argued with Miyu. Miyu didn't listen and just kept attacking the familiars. Mel could sense the other was full of anger and frustration. Mel could see Miyu's soul gem getting darker. Miyu was soon swarmed by the demon familiars.
"Fuck." Miyu exclaimed seeing the angry minions march towards her to avenge their fallen sisters. She was surrounded and her weapon was not helping her. Suddenly Purple Heart shaped beams of magic started appearing around her.
"You really are a weak magical girl." Mel sighed. "I can't believe you're the one who stopped my plans." She walked up to Miyu and held out her hand.
"I don't need your help. I can do this myself you're just tagging along on your own will." Miyu said starting to walk off.
"Stop right there!" Mel shouted out towards Miyu. "I don't care about your thoughts about me but I know you need me."
"Why would I need you?" Miyu scoffed.
"I know you don't want to become a witch and cause harm to others. As well you're afraid you'll be unable to break your own soul gem. You don't want to die but you know going to and that you need too." Mel walked next to Miyu.
"Shut up I hate you!" Miyu yelled at Mel slapping her. "You killed Arzoo and manipulated countless girls into becoming witches! Including my best friend and even your sister!"
"I know." Mel said looking down to the ground. "I can't expect anyone to forgive me."
"You are just a magical girl trapped in this cruel system. The second we made our wish we are doomed to die. You are just a scared girl who wants to live." Miyu stomped her foot into the ground clutching her fist. "WHY AREN'T YOU MORE EVIL!?" Miyu screamed.
"I am evil." Mel said looking towards a figure in the distance. "I became a magical girl to save her but in the end she suffered more because of me than she ever would have."
"Argh I thought meeting the one responsible for all the pain and suffering would be different. I wanted to see you suffer crying on the ground begging me for mercy. Not like this." Miyu growled.
"I thought you would have killed me the second you found out." Mel let out a small sigh of relief. "We are co-dependent on each other at the moment. We know I might not be able to stop the witch knowing who the witch is…err was, and I know you are unsure if you can beat another witch in your current state."
Miyu simply nodded and looked as they got closer to the witch. Before them was a humanoid figure made of red strings and clothed in an elegant white dress. The red strings flowed from where her arms would be and spread out in all direction as far as the eye could see.
"You know what to do." Miyu said to Mel referring to her power to know about witches.
Mel looked at the witch that was previously her sister. She gulped and took in a deep breath. "Lachesis, the measurer of life witch. This witch carries the burden of many lives. She holds on to the red threads of fate for many people so much so it has consumed her own individuality. She holds on to the threads of her friends even after they have been cut."
"Hmm that makes perfect sense for her." Miyu responded to Mel's explanation.
"Kyubey told me her wish, I wish that as long as I am alive I want to protect her and her to be happy like she was as a kid. Even if it hurts me I want her to be happy." Mel stared horrified at the witch in front of her. "She just wanted me to be happy and I did this to her." Mel fell to her knees crying.
"I thought this would happen." Miyu sighed a bit. She stood in front of Mel and held out her hand.
"What are you doing?" Mel questioned. Miyu hated her why was she being kind?
"I know for a fact that she would not want to be let loose on the world left as a witch to kill people." Miyu smiled a tiny bit.
"No she wouldn't." Mel responded simply.
"And I know for a fact the Mel told me about would not want her sisters soul suffer." Miyu said grabbing Mel's hand. "Let's do this together. Right Mel?"
Mel nodded and let Miyu help her up. "The witch has the power to control those threads and wrap them around you to prevent you from moving and possibly kill you if you run in blindly."
"Then what should we do?" Miyu replied.
"We'll need a distraction. That way the witch will not notice an attack." Mel informed. Looked at Miyu. "Since you have the abilities to run fast and have enhanced strength it would be the more obvious choice for you to be the one to distract the witch while I sneak up and attack from behind." Mel looked at Miyu. "Do you trust me enough to do this?"
Miyu stared at Mel for a few second hesitating to answer. "Yes." She replied. "The real question is if you can destroy the witch."
Mel took in a deep breath. "I promise I will."
Miyu rand full speed ahead leaving Mel in the distance behind her. Miyu was skeptical to trust Mel but she was fully aware it was necessary to defeat this witch and stop it from killing many innocent people. In any case Miyu was sure that she would not live another day so no matter where she died she was okay with it as long as no one else had to die because of her.
Having watched Miyu run to distract the witch Mel was left to quickly sneak up from behind and attack the witch. She walked up to the creature that was once her beloved sister. This was the first time she got to think to herself since Kelly became a witch. Kelly's wish had been broken upon her death.
"I wish that as long as I am alive I want to protect her and her to be happy like she was as a kid. Even if it hurts me I want her to be happy." Mel whispered to herself. Kyubey have told Mel the exact wording of Kelly's wish after she had become a magical girl. "Guess I'm no longer happy then."
Suddenly all the girls she had caused to die came to her mind. "Nina, Lana, Carley, Arzoo, Emily, Alison, Kelly and Miyu." Mel said reciting names. "I am the one responsible for their deaths. At this moment Kyubey is off focusing his attention on Hayley and Caitlin two souls grieving at the loss of their sisters' death. I told kyubey about them and their likelihood to become witches quickly, it's only a matter of time huh." Mel said whispering a bit louder. "I can only hope they don't give in to the temptation of becoming magical."
Mel wiped her eyes and squeezed her fist. She got closer and closer to the witch, seeing Miyu fight in the distance. "I cause so much pain to so many people." Mel said no longer whispering.
Mel was behind the witch, she somehow managed to get close enough to the witch to attack. Just at the right time as well. Miyu was wrapped in the witches threads and being drawn closer and closer to the witch.
Mel started to summon the magical aura around her hands. "Mother was wrong." the purple aura around her hands got bigger. "I'm the one who is a foul demon!" She held out her arms and her magic circled around her. "I want your soul to rest in peace."
A couple of heart shaped beams of magic shot from the aura surrounding Mel. Tears formed in her eyes and she let them fall to the ground as she prepared her attack. "Thank you for making me happy." one beam shot the witch in the back causing her to drop Miyu. "Thank you for sacrificing your soul so I can be happy." Another attack hit the witch again causing the witch to turn around. "I love you big sister!" Mel shouted out crying sending hundreds of heart shaped beams hit Lachesis.
The attack was fierce the backlash of the beam had even caused Miyu to be pushed away from the witch. Once the aura of purple magic had disappear Miyu brushed the dust off her legs and stood up. The witches labyrinth started to disappear around her. She looked around and say Mel standing still with a grief seed in her hands. Miyu walked over to Mel who was wiping tears from her eyes.
"Mel?" Miyu called out tapping Mel on the shoulder. "Are you okay?"
Instead of speaking she turned around. Mel was rubbing her eyes with only her left arm. In her right hand she was holding a grief seed. On the top of the grief seed was a hear with angel wings below the heart. Miyu wasn't a expert at sensing power of withes or magical girls but she could easily tell this grief seed was overwhelmingly strong.
"No I'm not okay...I'm a magical girl." Mel held out the grief seed to Miyu. "You can take it. I can't use my sisters soul to cleanse mine." Mel said unable to look Miyu in the eyes.
Miyu took the grief seed and placed it on the ground. "You know what I am about to do this is your last chance to stop me."
"I can't use it." Mel said shaking her head. Mel said starting to gasp for breath. She de-transformed into her everyday clothes and held out her very dark soul gem. "I know the same is going to happen to me soon."
Miyu did the same and looked at her own soul gem. It was tainted as well but not as much as Mel's was. Despite that she knew it was only a matter of time before of them would become witches. She also knew at their current states neither of them would be able to fight another witch.
"Miyu please use it. You have a family that cares about you. I have nothing no one would even care if I died they probably just assume I killed myself after they find out about Kelly disappearing." Mel said looking at the grief seed still lying on the ground.
"No I promised myself I wouldn't waste another's soul to prolong my life again." Miyu looked at her soul gem. "Emily's soul is the only reason I'm still here today...and the only way you were stopped." She smiled at her soul gem. "Thank you so much Emily I wish we got to know each other more."
Mel walked over to where the grief seed was lying. "Your right." Mel placed her foot above the grief seed and stomped it down with all her might breaking the soul gem into pieces. Mel's eyes started flooding with tears so much so wiping them on her sleeves her sleeves were damp from crying. "Wh-wh what are we going to do now?" Mel said breathing deeply.
"I know what I need to do." Miyu placed her soul gem on the ground. She had to crush it in a similar way to where she had just crushed the grief seed. She looked at Mel, who was shaking badly. She fell to the ground and started to feel intense pain.
"It hurts." Mel gasped. "Please Miyu I don't want to be a witch I don't want hurt anymore people." Mel's soul gem started shaking a bit. "I deserve to suffer and I don't deserve mercy from you but please."
Miyu looked at Mel who looked like she was in extreme pain. "You don't deserve mercy." Miyu turned away so she wasn't looking at the other girl. Is this what Arzoo was like when she went to Kelly and Mel for mercy. In theory out of all the girls lives she played with Arzoo was probably the one Mel was nicest too. Miyu looked to the ground and saw her soul gem on the ground. It was tainted and barely glowing anymore.
"I caused you so much suffering I am evil. I should become a witch." Mel said seeing her soul gem crack a bit.
Miyu grabbed the soul gem and looked at Mel laying on the ground. "This is for saving Arzoo's soul." Miyu clutched her wrist together. "I'm not doing this for you. It's what Arzoo would have wanted."
"T-t-thank you." Mel said unable to keep her head up. "I'm sorry." Mel said closer her eyes a bit.
Miyu smiled a little bit and threw the soul gem to the ground breaking it in half and stepped on the remaining pieces. She watched the life drain out of Mel's body. Miyu finally did it. She got revenge for Arzoo's death and she stopped the magical girl killer.
Miyu kneeled down next to Mel. Mel looked so innocent she did so many bad things and only started regretting in the past few hours. But there she was the same innocent look she saw on Arzoo and Alison. She was just like all other magical girls trapped in the cruel system. She made her wish and became the girl who knew to much about the system. Now her soul would rest in peace.
"Guess it's my turn now." Miyu picked up her soul gem. She started to cry. Every one of the magical girls she knew had died and many by her own hands. Miyu picked up her soul gem and sat down next to Mel. "Arzoo and Alison I'm coming to see you again." Miyu placed the soul gem on the ground and crunched it down with her foot.
*~* The next day *~*
"Come on Toby we're going to be late for school!" Caitlin called to the boy who was now adopted into her family. She walked into the living room to see Toby watching the news.
"Two more young girls have been found dead on a beach. Much like earlier cases the bodies were found with no definite cause of death." The reporter said looking to the camera. "Young girls Melanie LeFerve and Miyuki Miller like the most recent case Alison Williams attended the same school. Police are assuming recent murders are connected to numerous missing girls around the same age."
"I miss Mama." Toby said looking away from the tv and walking out the door.
"I know I do too." Caitlin petted Toby on the head. "It's what happens when your a magical girl."
"It's not all bad." A creature said walking beside Caitlin. "You could become a very strong magical girl."
"No, I know what happened to my sister. Miyu told me." Caitlin said kicking Kyubey away. "I am not going to be a magical girl. Magical girls only suffer."
