JADE POV
Edmund stood still, while I buckled up the undercoat of his armour, avoiding eye contact.
I could tell that he was watching me, which made it even worse.
I couldn't stop thinking about what happened at Miraz's camp. The things he said back there kept repeating in my mind. He was practically calling me a witch, but he looked so proud at the same time.
'Thanks.' I whispered.
'What?'
'I said thanks.'
'No, I heard you. What are you thankful for?'
'Thank you for what you did at the camp. You know, for sticking up for me. Which I really didn't need you to do, because I can stick up for myself, but thanks anyway.'
So I'm not the best talker in the world, sue me.
I took a step back, and looked up at him. He looked shocked at my words. His mouth fell open, as he leaned in closer, forcing me to reel back a little. Squinting in an adorable way, his eyes scanned my face.
'What are you doing?' I asked.
'Are you feeling okay?' He said, but I could tell he was joking from the tone of his voice.
'Oy' I replied, hitting him in the arm 'It's a thank you. Take it or leave it.'
I walked over to the body armour that was lying against the wall and picked it up, carrying it to Edmund. He leaned down to my eye level, allowing me to slip the metal piece over his head. As his brown hair peaked through the hole, I realized how close our faces were and was about to step back until we made eye contact. His chestnut eyes connected to mine, freezing me in my step.
'Jade,' Edmund whispered, 'I like you.'
I furrowed my eyebrows. Well you're my friend; you should like me, shouldn't you?
I heard him tut. 'Why are you so stupid?' he muttered to himself.
I dropped my hands ready to retort, when he brought a finger to my lips silencing me. He brought his hands up, but then stopped them in their tracks, hesitating for a fraction of a second, until he finally cupped my face.
I stood there, wide eyed, as leaned his head down making eye contact with me.
'I like you, Jade.'
I still didn't understand what he was going on about. I kept trying to understand but his deep brown eyes kept distracting me. As an attempt to stop being distracted, I lowered my gaze to the tiny burn marks that I had given him on that day. They blend in so well with his freckles.
I heard him sigh, as he then slowly lowered his head slightly, drawing his face closer to mine, causing my eyes to shoot up.
But his eyes were no longer focused on mine, as they had a solid gaze on my lips, making my heart beat uncontrollably.
What is happening right now?
I felt my head slightly tilt upwards, as our lips met. Closing my eyes, we shared a short yet sweet kiss, as all of mine and Edmunds past memories flooded through my head; Playing in the park when we were kids; Him giving me my only birthday present during the first year of the war; Finding me alone on the streets during a raid.
This is Edmund Pevensy, your best friend. The guy who you've never even thought of as a guy before, just that person who's always been there ever since you could remember. Doesn't this seem wrong? But why do I feel like it couldn't have been anyone else? Why can't I imagine anyone else in his place?
Slowly, we pulled away. I opened my eyes and looked at him; his eyes were still closed, lips still parted.
There was a deep chuckle that came from behind me, causing me to stiffen. I watched at Edmund opened his eyes to see who it was, instantly regretting it.
Standing by the doorway was a very smug looking High king of Narnia, wearing a very unflattering smirk on his face.
.NOW
KAITLIN POV
'He'll be perfectly fine, my lady'
Turning, I faced Glenstorm, my eyebrows furrowed slightly. 'How did you – '
'The look on your face says it all.' I nodded, my eyes straying to the entrance of The How, mentally willing him to both appear and stay in there at the same time. If he appeared, then I knew he was safe. But I would be forced to watch him risk his life. 'The High King is one of the best fighters we have.'
A silence fell as Edmund and Peter walked out of The How and made their way over to us. Peter stopped and met my eyes momentarily before moving to stand, ready for the duel to begin.
'There's still time to surrender' Miraz announced, watching Peter closely, as a predator-like grin played at his lips.
'Well, feel free.'
As the two spoke between themselves, I glanced at Edmund. 'When does this end?'
'When one of them is dead' He answered quietly.
My eyes moved back to the Kings before us and I sucked in a deep breath as they charged at each other.
Peter had to be alright. I needed him to be.
I felt my eyes widen as Peter's helmet fell to the floor. Undeterred, he rushed forward, but was flipped onto his back. Miraz stepped onto his shield, and I heard a crack. As soon as the sound reached my ears, I flinched and grabbed Edmund's hand.
He squeezed my hand once. 'He'll be fine' he reassured me 'He always is'
Looking up, his shoulders relaxed as he saw Caspian and Susan return from dropping Lucy off to safety, but my eyes stayed on Peter, refusing to let him out of my sight.
'Does his highness need a respite?' Miraz sneered.
'5 minutes.'
'3'
Walking away from Miraz, Peter headed towards Susan.' 'Lucy?'
'She got through' Looking at Caspian, she smiled 'with a little help.' Hugging Peter, she pulled back when he winced.
'Keep smiling.' Edmund muttered, watching the Narnians carefully from the corner of his eye. They turned to smile at the Narnians, who gave a deafening cry in return. My eyes met Jades, and I knew she wasn't convinced in the least.
Susan made her way up to The How and my eyes settled onto Peter's again as he sat down, his eyes screwed shut in pain. Moving towards him, I brushed the hair off his forehead. His eyes opened at my touch and I retracted it slowly. 'You're doing well.'
'No I'm not.' His eyes didn't leave mine. 'He's wining' I glanced over at Miraz, his age obviously hindering him. 'Trust me, you're doing a lot better than you think.'
He nodded and let out a wince when Caspian pulled his shield away. 'I think it's dislocated.'
'Will you wash away the blood?' Edmund asked quietly as he stood behind him. I nodded before kneeling before him and washing the blood away from his cuts, my fingertips tracing over the cuts gently.
'What happens back home is you die here?'
Freezing, I looked up at Edmund. He met my eyes momentarily. Peter turned to face Edmund. 'You know you've always been there – '
Edmund cut him off 'Didn't you want to talk to Katy?'
Glaring at Edmund, I waited as Peter looked down at me. He swallowed nervously. 'I wanted to say something that I might never the chance to – ' I nodded to Edmund and he cracked the bone into place. Peter cried out in pain.
'Forget whatever you were going to say.' I muttered, standing before him as he collected his sword and rejected his helmet. He walked away.
'Peter!' He turned to look at me. 'His knee's weak. Aim for it'
He nodded, before they charged at each other.
Should I have let Peter finish whatever he wanted to say? He might not have been saying what I thought he was going to say. Maybe he was saying that –
I was broken from my thoughts by the sound of a shout. My heart thudded uncomfortable in my chest as I watched Peter hover over Miraz. 'Now's not the time for Chivalry Peter.' Edmund said, causing him to look up.
Peter turned and walked slowly away from Miraz who sized his opportunity.
'Look out!'
'Peter!'
Seconds later, Miraz was kneeling before Peter as he clutched his side. 'What's the matter, boy?' I noticed the way Peters grip on his sword tightened. 'Too cowardly to take a life.'
Peter's shoulders relaxed and his arms fell to his side. 'It's not mine to take'
Extending the sword towards Caspian, Peter moved to stand beside me. Taking my hand, he pulled me tight against his side. He grasped my hand tightly in his and I knew he was attempting to calm himself. When it didn't appear to be working, I took his hand and held it between both of mine. From the corner of my eyes, I saw him glance at me in surprise, but he didn't say a word.
'Maybe I was wrong' Miraz spoke slowly, staring up at his nephew, 'Maybe you do have the makings of a Telmarine King.' He hung his head, as Caspian let out a loud scream. I turned my head swiftly and Peter pushed it protectively into his chest with his free hand.
There was a small pause before he whispered in my ear. 'Look up'
Listening to him for once, I looked up and noticed the sword sticking out of the grass.
'Not one like you.' Caspian spit out. 'Keep your life. But I am giving the Narnians back their kingdom!'
He straightened his back and walked over to us.
'Is it over?' I asked quietly, looking up into Peters face. He peered back down to me. 'I think so.' Hugging him tightly, I froze hearing his words. 'What I was saying before – '
'Peter. Don't'
'Kaitlin, I – '
'Treachery!' Lord Sopespian shouted, stopping all Narnian celebration. There before us lie Miraz with an arrow sticking out his back. 'They shot our king!'
