Chapter 14:
Dani POV-
'Well, that certainly had been an interesting encounter,' I thought to myself, thinking back to what had just unfolded between myself and that superhero kid. I had no doubt that he was the same kid from the robot attack the other day, but, in the dim light of the evening, I could not make out his facial features exceptionally accurately.
Although he was familiar.
I figured that he was one of the kids at my new school, but I had never asked his name.
'Next time,' I decided on the flight home. Of course, there were no guarantees that I would see the mysterious-fast-masked-kid again, but, I got the feeling that he was still just as curious about me as I was about him.
I phased into my bedroom, peeking my head outside of the bedroom door, to see if Lucius or Honey was still awake. It was only about nine o'clock, far too early for normal adults to go to bed, but, it seemed, the living room and kitchen were empty.
Noting that, I gently slipped down the hall, levitating only a little off of the floor, just so the scuffing of my feet on the floor wouldn't wake them if they were, in fact, asleep.
I floated into the kitchen, I was starving.
Of course, I'm always starving.
Because my ghost powers raise my metabolism so high, I constantly want to each, thankfully, without ever gaining an ounce. I suppose I'm lucky that way.
'I deserve a little luck after what a hell-hole my life has been,' I thought bitterly, violently slapping peanut butter onto a piece of white bread.
Once I was satisfied with my PB&J sandwich, I sat down at the kitchen table, not bothering to turn on the overhead light, instead, eating in the dark.
Suddenly, the front door opened and Lucius and Honey walked in.
"Haha, did you see when he was all 'I'm frozen, I can't move!'" I heard Lucius laugh.
"And then you said 'That's the point,'" Honey laughed in response. She clicked on the light and they both yelped in surprise to see me sitting there in the dark. I noticed Lucius hide a plastic bag behind his back.
"Hi," I smiled, hiding my suspicion.
"Oh, hi Dani," Honey smiled, but she looked to be mentally freaking out, "We just went to the supermarket."
That was a lie, the supermarket was far enough away that you would need to drive, and both cars had been in the driveway when I flew home. With a sad sense of understanding, I realized that they were hiding something from me. Granted, I am hiding something from them, but, I had trusted their sincerity.
"I'm gonna go put the groceries away," Lucius announced, taking the plastic bag to the master bedroom.
"So what are you doing up?" Honey asked.
I shrugged, "It's only nine o'clock."
She looked at the glowing numbers on the oven.
"So it is. You were just so quiet before we left, I thought you were asleep," she told me.
"I was just doing research for my school project," I lied. I felt a little guilt about lying to her, but, then again, they were lying to me.
"What was your project over again," she pretended to take interest in my schoolwork, sitting down next to me, probably hoping that I wouldn't question their whereabouts as of five minutes ago, "Mythical creatures?"
"Well, yeah, more specifically, ghosts?" I shrugged, too tired to dredge the issue of their whereabouts and playing into her charade instead.
"Oh…ghosts? That's interesting, have you found anything yet?" she wondered.
"Well, I have some personal experience to contribute, but other than that, not really," I took a bite of my sandwich.
"What do you mean?" she asked honestly confused.
"Well, I lived in Amity Park for a while," I replied, "Which is, by far, the most haunted city in America."
… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …
Honey POV-
I frowned.
I had never heard of Amity Park, and, before today, I would have agreed with the assessment that ghosts are just mythical creatures, that they don't exist.
But…after Lucius and I just went out to answer a call, I wasn't as sure anymore.
It seemed just like any other distress call, a suspicious person, possibly a villain with hostages.
But, when we had shown up to the scene, I immediately noticed that there was something off about this particular villain. For one thing, most of what we did, couldn't touch him, it just passed right through him, for another, he was able to actually take over one of the bodies of the hostages, leaving us unable to do anything without hurting said hostage.
We had finally managed to encase him in ice after I used my own telekinesis to render him unable to move while he was suspended in the air, which, is what we had been discussing when we had walked in the house (and I desperately wondered how much of that Dani had heard), but the ghost had still managed to get away.
How do I know he was a ghost?
Well, other than his repeated "I am Skulker! The ghost zone's greatest hunter!" spiel, the combination of his abilities, and with the fact that his hair was on fire, we had assessed that he was, in fact, a ghost.
Could it be a coincidence that Dani has to study ghosts and has background knowledge on them, the first time we ever saw a ghost?
I, for one, have never believed in coincidence, going up in a church background, as I had with my father being a pastor, I have always believed that anything that happens is by the direct will of God and that nothing could ever be coincidence.
That being said, what would be the will of God in this scenario?
Of course, it is obvious that Dani has been hiding something from us, but what is it?
And are we supposed to determine what her secret is, or should we allow her to tell us on her own?
'And what,' I wondered 'does her secret have to do with ghosts?'
