Chapter 14: The Second and Third Coming of Lillian Grant
Olivia father sees Karen and Jerry, and attempts to get them out of there before her mother sees them or Fitz arrives. "Louis, what are you…oh and who are you?"
Olivia's mother sees something familiar in both children.
"You must be Olivia's mom," Jerry says, stretching his hand out. "I'm Jerry and this is my sister Karen. Olivia is dating our father."
"Tom has kids," Adelyn asks somewhat surprised. She always thought he was a good guy. Maybe she was wrong in her assumption. She is about to question them more when she hears…
"No, they are my children," answers Fitz coming into the room. Louis saw him coming and opened the door when no one was looking. He thought Fitz would want to get inside the house before Adelyn and Olivia knew he was there. But what came out Fitz and his wife's mouths next shocked him to the core.
"Hello Fitzgerald." Adelyn says to him, looking him up and down.
"Hello Adelyn," Fitz says, giving her a death glare. He remembered her as soon as he heard her voice. He just did not put two and two together until now. If he had done so sooner, maybe he would have taken steps to protect Olivia.
Olivia looks at them both somewhat stunned and begins to read his mother's third letter. She read the first line only and whips the letter around showing her mother the signature of "Lillian Rose Grant." She is about to continue reading when she looks to her side and sees Fitz standing there shocked. He looked like someone punched him in the stomach.
Sensing his fears, and seeing him practically falling back into the counter, Olivia closes the letter, and walks to him. His heart is pounding in his chest. He cannot believe that his mother, not only left him two letters to find his precious Livy. But she wrote and left her one with Joe as well. Talk about working from the grave.
"Livy," Fitz says, looking at her. "How did you get that letter?"
Olivia smiles, and goes over to him. She motions him to sit. "It was in my grandfather's safe. I guess your mom gave it to him, to put away for me to find. When you showed me the letter, I realized the writing was hers. It didn't click the after the first letter. That is why I ran off. I recognized the handwriting. I thought it was my Papa's or Nana's at first. Then I saw your mom's writing and new it was her."
Olivia sees her mother behind her ready to pull her away Fitz. Mitch and Stephen see her making movements in their direction and stop her.
"Let me talk to my daughter." Adelyn commands.
"I am sorry Ma'am but I cannot do that. You are about to harm the President of the United States or his girlfriend, The First Girlfriend," Mitch says. "If I were you I would back up, or you will be escorted off the property."
"You cannot make me leave my father's house." Adelyn tells both him and Stephen. "You have no authority over me and my daughter."
"Oh yes they can Momma," Olivia turns. "I can have them forcibly remove you from this house. Papa left it to me, not to you. Now get your ass over there and sit down. We have a lot to discuss."
"Olivia you will not speak to me that way. I am your mother." Adelyn tries to scold her.
"Mother you expect me to respect you in your house, now do the same in mine." Olivia voice is more forceful now.
"I will do no such thing unless you get away from him," pointing directly at Fitz. Adelyn begins to move her direction.
"SIT DOWN MOMMA!" Olivia screams, making everyone jump in the room. Her mother sits in huff, not expecting her daughter to raise her voice to her in that fashion.
In the commotion, she sees Karen and Jerry standing next to her father. Her Dad was protecting them from the encounter. He had a hunch that things were going to get nasty between everyone in the room.
Olivia looked to Fitz and knew what she was going to ask. "Mitch, Stephen, could one of you have the agents outside escort my children up to Rose Point. They do not need to be here for this." Fitz asks.
"Sir," Stephen said, "I'll let the agents outside know."
"Dad we want to stay here with you and Libby," Karen pleaded walking up to Olivia. She wrapped her arms around her. She didn't want to leave her. Jerry came up and stood next to Olivia, showing everyone in the room that they were a family.
"Kids, I…" Fitz was about to say, but Olivia stopped him.
"Karen, Jerry, you do not need to be here for this. This is between Fitz, my mother," she glares at her, "and myself. It is going to get nasty. Your Dad and I don't want you here for it."
"But what if your mom convinces you to leave Daddy; to leave us?" Karen could feel the tears come into her eyes. She looked over a Fitz and knew he feared the same.
She place her hands on Karen's face, and watched her mother face turn pale. Her arms were folded across her chest. There is no way she was going to let that wretched woman interfere in her life anymore.
"Sweetheart, I need you, your brother and your father to hear me when I say these words. My mother, nor ANYONE is going to take me away from you all. You ALL are my life. You so much to me. Do you believe me?"
"But Liv," Jerry spoke up, "she's evil." Jerry just met the woman and he could sense it.
Fitz chuckled, and Olivia did her best to keep a straight face. Her father on the other hand had to leave the room briefly. He went into the garage, and she heard him break out in a huge laugh.
"Apparently I am not the only that thinks that. Your Dad does too." Jerry commented again, looking to Fitz who was having a hard time, keeping it together. Louis reentered the house, and Olivia could tell that he had been laughing so hard that he was crying.
"Daddy!" Olivia said.
"I'm fine Pumpkin. Something in my eyes that's all." Louis told her. Adelyn looked at her husband, not pleased at all.
"Libby please let us stay behind. You need us," Karen whined.
"I'll tell you what, you go up with the agents like your Dad wants, and I promise to make something delicious for dinner. Come one I know you are all itching to try my lasagna. It's early enough and I'll have plenty of time to make it."
As soon as Olivia said lasagna, Jerry practically dragged his sister out of the house. They ran back quickly and hugged and kissed Olivia. They stopped and looked at her mother. Before Jerry could stop her, Karen told her mother, "You be nice to your daughter. She's the best in the world, and if you try to break her and OUR Dad up, my brother and I will end you."
Fitz swallowed hard, not believing that Karen threatened her mother. "Karen," he said. She turned around and looked at Fitz. Jerry was holding her hand by the door.
"Gladiators in Suits Daddy," his daughter said with a smile. "You stand up for what you believe in. I know I am not supposed to be disrespectful. But you have to give respect if you expect to get it back. And Olivia's mother is not showing you or Olivia respect. Libby is our gladiator and it's time that we are hers."
"She's right Dad," Jerry said. "Gladiators in Suits," Jerry repeated Karen's words to Fitz and then they were out the door.
/
"Once a Grant; Always a Grant…"
As the door closed, it was just Fitz, Olivia, Louis and Adelyn. Mitch and Tom were standing in the kitchen. Olivia looked to Fitz and asked them to please step out. Neither one of them needed to be here for this.
They reluctantly agreed, but Stephen whispered to Fitz, "Don't let her ruin what you have."
"They don't call me the Most Powerful Man in the World for nothing Stephen," Fitz told him, staring at Adelyn.
Mitch and Stephen then went out into another room, and gave the final four the privacy that was needed. Fitz walked back over to where Olivia was standing. She was by her kitchen island, leaning against the counter. Olivia saw him coming and moved forward. He sat on a bench behind her. She was about to walk towards her mother, but Fitz grabbed onto her, pulling her into his body.
She gasped at his aggressiveness. However the moment his hands touched her, she relaxed and stood comfortably between his legs. Fitz then wrapped his arms around her, glaring at Adelyn. Her mother looked like she was about to explode, at her daughter in THIS man's arms. Fitz leaned up and told Olivia, "Go get her Sweet Baby. I'll be here watching."
Olivia turned around. "You won't leave me."
Fitz looked at Adelyn then focused into the unsure eyes of his woman. "Never."
"Good just checking. Hold onto your Presidential Balls honey because you are going to go on a kick ass ride." She leaned in and kissed him quickly.
"And a nice ass that is too," Fitz told her, getting ready to run his hands down to goose her.
"Get your hands off my daughter," Adelyn bellowed at Fitz. "Who gives you the right to touch her?"
Olivia turns and steps back into Fitz's embrace. She reaches for his hands, and wraps them securely around her abdomen. "Momma, he can put his hands ANYWHERE I see fit. I told you I was dating someone. Well this is who I am dating. This is my boyfriend, Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III; elsewhere known as The President of the United States."
"I know who he is Olivia, dear. I am not blind." Adelyn sneers. "But the question is HOW do you know him?"
"I'm her childhood Christmas Wish" Fitz states sarcastically.
"My students sent in videos and letters to the White House, explaining to Fitz of my Christmas Wish to meet a sitting President. Fitz watched the videos, read their letters, and came out here to grant my wish." Olivia shot back.
"Oh isn't that wonderful. Now you're DATING him!" Adelyn roared in disgust.
Fitz then made his voice heard, "Yes we are dating. And yes I granted her Christmas Wish, or did you try to keep her from that too."
"I was not asking you Fitzgerald. I was talking to MY daughter."
"Excuse me, but it's Mr. President," Fitz corrects her. "And yes your daughter, Adelyn is MY GIRLFRIEND," Fitz booms back, practically ready to come off the chair.
Louis then pipes in, attempting to ease the tension, "Now Addie that is enough. This man in the President of the United States and he is DATING OUR little girl. You will treat him with respect."
"Louis," Adelyn interjects.
"No," Louis booms, "And furthermore, how in the hell do you know each other. How are you on a first name basis with President Grant and him with you? What the hell is going on here? What have you been keeping from me, or shall I say from our baby girl?"
"I am not answering any questions. I don't have to. That is none of anyone's business. I did what needed to be done to protect OUR daughter, Louis."
"Oh no you don't Addie! You are not going to give me that line of shit. I have been married to you for almost 40 years. I know you Dearie, and don't you ever forget it. Now TELL ME HOW YOU KNOW THE PRESIDENT!" Louis screamed. Olivia had never heard her father so upset. She flinched, and nuzzled herself into Fitz's arms for comfort.
"I've got you Livy. She won't hurt you anymore," Fitz whispered into her hair.
"I know. But I have to do this. Do you have it," she asks him.
"The letter," Fitz says. He nods his head to signal that he does.
"Good, hold onto it until I say when," Olivia voices to him. She then whispers what she is going to do. Fitz eyes widen and realizes even more how much he truly loves her.
"Yes Momma please enlightened us how you know Fitz," Olivia speaks clearly. "This must be good."
"Olivia you will not take that tone with me. I am your mother." Adelyn starts walking in her direction.
Olivia moves Fitz's hands off her body. He reluctantly lets her go. Olivia hears him grumbled at the loss of contact but he knows this is something she must do on her own.
"Yes you are. And I WANT ANSWERS! Tell me dammit!" Olivia screams it at her. Her mother is so taken back, that she sits down.
"Fine," Adelyn huffs. "I used to know President Grant when he was a younger. I grew up in this house Olivia, or did you forget that?"
"No Momma I did not forget that," Olivia counters back. "So you lived next door to the Grants, and you saw him. And there is more to it than that. The way you two look at each other, there's some history between you two."
Olivia looks to Fitz then her mother. Both of them have a look of disgust on their faces. "So are you going to tell her or am I," Fitz comments.
"Tell me what," Olivia says. "Well one of you best, say something or I swear to God I am going to open up the biggest can of whoop ass on the both of you!"
"Your Nana and President Grant's mom were the best of friends, you knew that right," Adelyn comments. "They used to bake together, have tea, and spend time together when she was here."
"Yes I know that," Olivia says. "But she didn't go up there as she got older. Her legs couldn't take walking up the hill."
"Well after The President was born, Lillian wanted to be more of a hand's on Mom. But Big Jerry, HIS father, didn't like that. Grants have babies but they do not take a hand's on approach to raising them. Lillian didn't like that idea. When she came here, she only allowed Nigel, a few other members of the staff to help. My mother, and I were part of that."
"You worked up there," Olivia asked.
"Unfortunately yes, and only when your Nana needed me to help. But anytime Big Jerry was around he didn't like us helping out with HIS son. He didn't like us because we were not of the same social class as the Grants. But the young President here, didn't take to anyone as a young child while he was here unless it was your Papa, or Nana. Eventually him and I had an understanding. But I knew he was Big Jerry's son and he would end up just like him."
"I am NOTHING like my father Adelyn," Fitz retorted. "My mother did take a hand's on approach to raise me. You hated me, the older I got and for no reason. You never gave me the chance. You didn't want to get know the real me. I know there is a huge age difference between us. But I am my mother's son, just Big Jerry's by blood."
"Blood is thicker than water, Mr. President." Adelyn snipped back.
Olivia countered with, "So you HATE Fitz because he's Big Jerry's son. You never gave him the chance as he grew up, because of that. Come one Momma that is Bull Shit. What aren't you telling me?"
"Tell her Adelyn, why else do you hate me?" Fitz challenged her. But Adeyn didn't answer. She just looked at Fitz and Olivia.
"Mother you tell me right now!"
"You have never had to work a day in your blessed WHITE LIFE. Everything has always been giving to you on a silver spoon. Money, cars, houses, and you could have anything you wanted, without really working for it. I have had to work for everything. You Mr. President haven't had to work for SHIT!" Adelyn snarled.
Fitz crossed his arms and stared at her. "Is that what you think? That because I am a GRANT that I don't know the meaning of working hard. That is why you hate me. I worked my GRANT ass to get to the Oval office. I did that all own my own. Please Adelyn give me a break." Fitz spoke again. "There is more to it. I have never done anything to you or your family."
"Oh no?" Adelyn questioned him.
"Momma, Fitz has done nothing to us. If his father has, that is not his fault. You can't blame him for his father's mistakes." Olivia said.
"So tell me Adelyn what have I done to you?" Fitz questioned her again.
"You want to know what you did. Do you really? YOU EXIST! Everything in your life has been handed to you, and you are not grateful for it. Your mother, God rest her soul was a great woman. But when she married your father and it changed her."
"Are you seriously upset that my mother married my father? Oh come on!"
"No. I was happy for her, because she did love him. And when you were born, she was so thrilled. But then after you were here, you father lost interest in her. He found others to make him happy. You're father couldn't keep it in his pants, and you are no better. That is why your wife divorced you." Adelyn fired back. "Grant men did not know how to keep it in their pants."
Now Fitz got off the chair and started walking towards Olivia's mother. "My wife did not divorce me because I could not keep it in my pants. I never cheated on my wife! She LEFT ME and OUR children because she did not want to be First Lady. Her own career ambitions meant more to Mellie than myself, Karen or Jerry. She didn't want children. She only had them, because she was told to. You know NOTHING about me Adelyn. I am NOT my father." Fitz roared back.
"Once a Grant; always a Grant Mr. President." Adelyn snipped, with just as much hatred. "But to get right down to it, you are just a boy; Big Jerry's BOY Fitz. And now you think you are good enough for MY little girl. My CHILD, the child I created, gave birth to. The daughter I raised to be TWICE AS GOOD AS YOU! You can have any woman you want Mr. President. You are NOT going to have my daughter. You are not good enough for her. She is NOT going to be with you."
"You have no input on who I get to be with. I am grown woman. I don't need your approval of who I chose to date." Olivia contested. "Plus Daddy, approves of Fitz."
Adelyn turned to Louis. "You knew she was DATING HIM. And you didn't tell me."
"Yes Adelyn I knew. I met The President last week when I was here. We had a heart to heart. I have no problems with him wanting to be with Livy. He's a good man, nothing like Big Jerry." Louis said and looked at Fitz. "I never met your father Fitz, but for the record from the stories that I heard, you are nothing like him. Your mother would be proud."
"Thank you Louis," was all Fitz could say before Adelyn ripped Louis' head off.
"YOU KNEW LIVY was dating HIM! You knew and you didn't think it was right tell me. I am her mother. I knew I should have burned that 'Little Apple Dress' picture long ago." Adelyn snipped.
Olivia then exploded, "WAIT YOU KNEW IT WAS FITZ! YOU FREAKING KNEW AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR HIM ALL MY LIFE AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME! WHY!"
"Because I thought you would forget about him. Forget about the person that took the picture. But you never did. You kept asking questions. So one day I took the picture and hid it at the house. I did not know that your Papa had another one. You don't belong in THEIR or THAT world Livy dear. There is no place for someone like you."
"What do you…" Olivia started to question when Fitz lost it.
"What do you mean someone like her! That is BULL SHIT! You kept her from me! You kept us apart. You saw the connection and you hid it from her. You did everything to keep her from finding me; from me finding her when I was here." Fitz screamed at her. "I could have found her sooner, and we could have been together."
/
The Second Coming…
Adelyn then got uncharacteristically silent. Louis watched her closely and knew there was more. "Addie what did you do?"
But she refused to answer him. She looked at Olivia, and then to Louis. She finally spoke and voiced, "I did what needed to be done to protect our daughter from HIM; from the Grants. I didn't want her to be one of The President's conquests or mistresses."
"Adelyn," Fitz said walking in her direction, "I am NOT my father. I don't sleep around. I have dated, and been with women. But I don't do the casual sex- one night stands. I was faithful to Mellie. Olivia will never be just a conquest or a mistress. She is everything."
"You don't have the right to be with my daughter, Mr. President." Adelyn said. "I have not spent the last 25 years….," she stopped.
"What do you mean he does not have the right," Louis strained voiced asked. "What have you been doing the last 25 years?" Olivia's mother didn't answer him.
"Adelyn Virginia Pope, you answer me right now! I want answers." Her father boomed.
Adelyn turned to Louis then to Fitz and Olivia. "I don't have to stand for this. I don't have to answer to anyone." She started to walk out the door when she heard Fitz say;
/
"My Dearest Fitzgerald,
If you are reading this SECOND letter I know you have found the first letter that I left you. It explains to you that finding Olivia is the key to your happiness. She is the light in your darkest of days; the love and joy that causes your heart to beat. The promise of a life with a woman, who can be your soul mate till the end of time. A happy life, that only she can give you, if you find her.
But after all my hoping and wishing that you find her, I have come to learn that two people may not allow that to happen. They do not know that I overheard their conversation. Now that my life is coming to an end, you had to know the truth before Olivia is lost to you forever.
Since that day of your meeting, I had always wondered why when we were here, Joe did not bring Olivia around as often as he used to. He always made sure of it. Olivia loved coming here. She felt at home, and never like she didn't belong.
But what I did not know was why we hardly saw her anymore. Why Joe did not bring her by, especially as she grew older. It turns out that your father and Olivia's mother have been working together all this time, to keep you both far apart. You did not dare ask about the "Little Apple Dress" girl in his presence, but I know you never stopped thinking about her. From what I learned from Joe, she never stopped asking about the "nice man with the blue eyes" either.
All this time, your father and Adelyn have done everything possible to keep you both a part. They have been working together for the last 15 years or more, making sure you never see each other again, unless it is from a distance. He wanted you in an arranged marriage, hoping that you would forget all about her
Also, Adelyn paid an unexpected visit to your father, when he thought I was not in the house. She was in the study, and I heard them talking. She told him that she held up her end of their deal to make sure that anytime we were here at the estate, she would keep her daughter away.
She either took her shopping, made some excuse to keep her from visiting Joe and Josie. When she turned eighteen, she made her leave the area to go to college, and live on campus. She insisted on Olivia living on campus, to get the full college experience, and limited her visits home, especially when we were here. If she found out you and I would be visiting, she instructed Olivia to stay on campus.
Adelyn even went as far as planning a family trip, to ensure that you two would never come into contact. Since Olivia was no longer a child, she could not control her like she used to. This was her way of controlling her daughter, keeping her from finding you. She feared that once your eyes connected with her daughters, you both would not be able to stay away from each other.
Olivia has grown into a beautiful woman Fitz. Like I told you, I kept all those older pictures of her, in the hopes that if you ever found these letters, and pictures, that you would find her. If Olivia's mother ever knew that Joe, gave them to me for that purpose, she would be furious.
Adelyn also told your father, that she kept telling Olivia that she does not belong in "Rose Point's" world. That life that she kept dreaming about up here at Rose Point with her Prince Charming (you) was not for her. She is not good enough, and would never be. In order to be good enough to enter 'that' world, she has to be twice as good.
Adelyn pushed her daughter on numerous suitors she deemed fit, in order to get her to forget about the "nice blued eyed man." But Olivia never went for any of them. Big Jerry asked if Olivia had found anyone in college. To Adelyn's dismay, it was a no. After numerous attempts to set her daughter up with the 'right" man, they all failed.
Your father, reminded Adelyn, that he tried to keep you away from here. He kept you in Santa Barbara when he heard from Adelyn that Olivia would be visiting Joe and Josie. Even though he hated the idea of you joining the Navy, he welcomed it, hoping the 'right woman' with the 'right background' would come along and sweep you off your feet.
I never thought much about how you met Mellie, but I am sure you father had a hand in that meeting. If something happens by chance Fitz, it's meant to be. With your father, NOTHING happened by chance. He always has a plan. His plan for you it to become President, which I have no doubt you will become.
I know there is more to their scheming, but I do not know any of the details. I know you will hate your father more, for keeping you away from the love of your life. I don't blame you. I hate him too. But I want to remember one thing Fitz. You are your own man, and I am proud of the man, father, Governor, and one day President you will become.
Find your Livy. She holds the key to your heart. If you find her, hold onto her, and NEVER let her go. Never let anything come between you two again. Olivia I have no doubt will become your everything and more.
I love you my son,
Your Mother…

Fitz put the letter down, and looked at Adelyn. She was speechless starting at him. Fitz stared to walk in her direction, with his heart pounding against his sternum. His fists were clenched and he was ready to physically hurt her. All this time lost; the hours, the minutes, the seconds he foolishly gave away to others. When his father and this woman knew where he heart truly lied.
Adelyn backed up, not sure what Fitz was going to do. His eyes were dark, and Olivia could feel the heat radiating off his body. His breathing was shortened and she could see the veins sticking out on his neck. She got in front of him to stop him. He moved her to the side, and pushed passed her.
"You kept HER from me. You and my father kept us apart. All for what, because you didn't think she was good enough. That she wasn't good enough to be part of MY world. Or you didn't think I was good enough for her," Fitz lowered his voice in anger. Reading the letter out loud to her, only heightened his emotions.
"Fitz," Olivia said, but he wasn't listening.
"You and my father, Adelyn, kept us apart. You assumed that I was going to use your daughter. Use and take what I wanted from her. Then throw her to the waist side. That once I got her into bed, that she would be no use to me. I would screw her, like my father banged many women, then throw them away. I am not MY FATHER."
"Fitz please," Olivia said, trying to calm him down. She placed herself in front of him and her mother. She placed her hands on his chest to stop him from moving in her direction.
"ALL THIS TIME LOST. I could have lost her to anyone Adelyn. SHE COULD BE SOMEONE ELSE'S WIFE. What if Livy would have married someone else? What if we would have never found each other?" Fitz screamed at the top of his lungs.
Adelyn then snickered, "Then I WOULD have won Mr. President. You would not have MY daughter in your life. It would have ruined you. I saw your mother fight for your father's love and attention; neither he gave willingly or without a price. I did not want my baby, involved in that world, involved with you. You are his son no matter what you say. My Livy, will NEVER belong to you. You don't deserve her. She is NOT yours!"
Fitz almost came at her, but Olivia spun him around. She took his face in her hands and commanded him to "Look at me." Fitz tried to spin them back around so he could kick her mother out, but then she threw her arms around his neck. Olivia stretched herself to the fullest, pressomh her body into his, molding herself into his chest. Fitz's chest was rising so rapidly that she thought he was going to have a heart attack.
"Hold me Fitz," she commanded. He finally wrapped his arms around her body. She could feel him shaking. She then kissed his passionately in front of her father and mother. Fitz melted, picked her up and frantically kissed her back. He was so afraid, that Adelyn would pull her away from him.
He walked them to the bar stool and sat her down. Louis was so taken back not only about the letter but at how Fitz reacted to his daughter's touch. She was his oxygen in his lungs, the water in his body, the reason he existed. This man truly loved his daughter. Louis saw Adelyn ready to pull them apart but he stood in front of her blocking her path.
"Let it go Addie. She is not yours. She's not our little girl anymore." Louis looked over to Fitz and Olivia. They stopped kissing and were locked in each other's eyes and embrace. "She belongs to Fitz now. She always belonged to him. Our daughter captured the most powerful man in the world's heart. That is nothing to be ashamed of Adelyn."
"No," Adelyn said. "I did not spend all that time and effort keeping them apart for them to find each other. For her to fall under the 'Grant Charms' Louis – to be is mistress so he can be with whomever he chooses when he leaves her."
Fitz was about to say something to Adelyn when Olivia placed her fingers over his lips and stopped him. She placed both her hands on his cheeks and gazed into his eyes. "Consider this handled."
"Livy," he pleaded "you need me." Fitz muttered to her.
"I do. I will ALWAYS need you Fitz. But right now I need to fight her and win. And with you here by my side I can. You don't have to say anything else right now. She knows how you feel, and now it's my turn. I've got this."
"You sure," Fitz asked needing more reassurance for himself.
"Yes. I'm sure. I know what to do. You just have to be sure also," Olivia looked down and Fitz caught on to what was referring too. "You will, just sit here and don't move. Do you understand? No matter what is in here, you will stay put. Got it."
Fitz looks up and sees her mother and father talking. Adelyn is still adamant about pulling them apart but Louis is not standing for it. Fitz even hears him threaten to call in the Secret Service to detain her, if need be. Louis looks over at Fitz after he mentions the idea, and Fitz smiles back.
"Fitz, do you understand. Stay put," Olivia asks him again. "Fitz!"
"Got it." He says back with a smirk.
Olivia begins to walk away but he stops her and pulls her back to him. He takes her face in his hands and tells her, "Show HER who you are."
Olivia kisses him lightly and tenderly on the lips. His lips linger for a moment, already missing her touch. He winks at her and she turns around ready to face her mother. She fears for Fitz but knows this must be done.
/
#TeamTom…and #Team?
She begins to walk away from Fitz, staring at her mother. This woman who she thought she knew, but really didn't know at all. How could someone be so cruel, heartless, and deceiving. She of course, never had a great bond with her mother, but this made her realize why.
"Mom, do you have anything to say for yourself?" Olivia asked.
"I do not," Adelyn sarcastically spoke.
"Why did you do this to me, us, to Fitz? Do you realize the pain you caused me? All this time you knew I was waiting for him to come along and find me and you kept pushing me to be with someone else. How could you?"
Adelyn leaned against the couch and crossed her arms. " I wanted you to be the best. I did not want my daughter involved in HIS lifestyle."
"And what is HIS lifestyle Momma? Tell me exactly," Olivia said walking forward.
"A spoiled, coddled, pampered brat," Adelyn countered back, looking at Fitz, who showed no emotions to counter act the fact. Louis had now walked over to Fitz and was standing by him.
"You don't know him Momma. You don't know him at all." Olivia raised her voice back to her. She was trying to keep her emotions in check, but she was messing with the man she loved. That was not going to happen anymore.
"And you do," her mother contradicted. "You think that after spending two weeks with him, almost three that you KNOW him."
"I do KNOW him. I know him better than anyone." Olivia spot back. "I can tell when he's upset, happy or sad. I know when he's nervous. I know when he's not telling me the truth. I also know that he would NEVER do anything to hurt me Momma."
"That's a load of Grant Bull Shit that's he's feeding you Livy, to get you into bed, then leave you. You're not meant to follow him to the White House. You are not First Lady material. The country will never accept you." Adelyn looked right to Fitz when she said it, and saw Louis, put a hand on his chest holding him back.
She knew she just hit a nerve. She figured out already, that he cared for her daughter. But there was no way she was going to let this relationship go any further. And no way she was going to allow him to marry HER child and take her away.
Olivia stood there stunned for only a moment. She did not dare look at Fitz. They had not talked of marriage, family, or anything else this early. One thing for certain was that she wanted forever with him. But that still scared her. If they made it, she would not only become his wife and mother for Karen and Jerry, but the First Lady of the United States. With him by her side, she knew she could do it, but was she good enough.
She was not going to let her mother get into her head now, and change everything. "No! You have no right to tell me who to be with. All this time you have been attempting to set me up with man after man, who you deemed fit. I never understood why you wanted me to get married and settle down so quickly, until now. You wanted me married off, so Fitz and I couldn't be together."
"I want what is best for my daughter, all my children." Adelyn said.
"So pushing Tom on me was the right then I suppose?" Olivia finally asked.
"Yes Livy dear it is. He is a good, caring man who would give you the world, ONLY if you had given him the chance. He loves you Olivia. I knew that from the moment you introduced me to him." Adelyn hoped maybe using Tom would get through to her that Fitz was not the right man for her.
"Are you serious? You think I don't know the kind of man that Tom is. You think I am that blind. He is a good, caring, sweet man that would give me the world if I let him in," Olivia said, looking at Fitz who now looked at tad bit worried. But she had to continue. "Momma, I will always care for Tom, but not the way he wants me to. What would make you think that I would just settle for him?"
"What makes me think Livy? I just hoped and prayed that Fitz would never have found you. I hoped that eventually you would have given Tom his chance to make you happy. He never pressured you into anything. Tom is always there for you. Tom can give you a normal life, dear. A life out of the spot light, away from politics, away from The President," Adelyn snipped, glaring at Fitz.
"So what is normal Mumma? A house with a white picketed fence, dog, and children – is that what you want from me? No career, no life, just stay at home and be ornamental like you? That is not me. Even if Tom and I would have gotten serious, and Fitz would have come into my life; I would not be able to walk away from him. I will NEVER walk away from him."
Fitz swallowed hard. His heart melted into a million pieces at her words. "Adelyn your daughter will never be ornamental to me. But you are right, her being with me would be anything but normal. Normal is overrated anyway. Olivia is the most functional woman I know, and I am a lucky man to have her by my side. And that is where she is going to stay," Fitz said calmly.
"But here is what you don't get Mr. President. I don't want MY CHILD with you. If you were a good man, you would walk away from her now before things go too far. You would leave her life forever before you hurt her more than you already have. Before the press finds out and her name and picture are all over the newspapers; I don't want that for Olivia. She deserves better."
"And Tom is better than me," Fitz raises his voice back to her.
"Anyone is better than you Mr. President. As long as they are not a Grant, and has nothing to do with Washington and its dirty politics." Adelyn scoffs with a labored breath, and harsh tone.
"Not all Washington is evil Adelyn," Fitz counters. "You don't know what you are talking about."
"Maybe so Mr. President, but regardless I don't want my daughter with you. She belongs with Tom. He is perfect for her. Now be the better man and walk away. Go beg Mellie to take you back," Adelyn mutters.
"I didn't…" then Adelyn stops talking before she says anymore.
"You didn't what Momma," Olivia asks her, knowing she has her just where she wants her.
"Nothing Livy dear," her mother tries to play it off but even Fitz and Louis are now realizing that Adelyn is hiding even more.
Olivia gives her mother a wicked smile, turning to Fitz. "Fitz I may need to continue this alone with my mother. Do you want to step out with my Dad for a minute?" Fitz watches her take out the third letter and his heart knows something is desperately wrong. He can see it in her face.
"No I am staying right here. Whatever you have to say to her, I want to be here for it, in case you need me Livy." Fitz says with confidence. What is in that letter can't be that bad, or can it?
"Daddy?" Olivia turns to him.
"Nope I am staying right here with you and Fitz Pumpkin. I have a hunch you are both going to need a voice of reason." Louis mind is running through scenarios. He cannot imagine what Fitz's mom could have written his daughter about and why for that matter.
She then turns to Fitz. He gives her a faint smile. "Open it and read it. I'm ready Livy. I can handle anything Livy, as long as I have you by my side."
/
The Third Coming
Olivia then pulls the letter out and begins to open it again. Her mother, stares at her, not worried in the least. "So Momma, do you have anything else to add about what you 'didn't' do, before I open this letter?"
"No Livy dear, I have nothing else to say in this matter. I just want you away from The President, and him back with Mellie."
"So," Olivia says as she unfolds the letter even more, "why do you want him back with his ex-wife so badly Momma? Is there a particular reason?"
"That is his ex is it not. She is Jerry and Karen's mother. Maybe she would reconsider going back to President Grant, if she were properly motivated or persuaded."
Fitz asked, "So what is that supposed to mean Adelyn?"
"Oh nothing Mr. President," Adelyn gives a wicked smile. "Come Louis, we are leaving. And I suggest the President goes up to Rose Point and stays there. Olivia you are coming home with us. I don't want you in this house, as long as HE is here. It looks like they don't have any cards left to play."
"You are NOT TAKING MY GIRLFRIEND anywhere Adelyn. She STAYS here with me and that is final," Fitz roars. "Touch her, and I'll have the Secret Service detain you."
Adelyn grabs her jacket, and purse. Louis does not move and she begins to reach for Olivia who backs away. "Oh Mummy Dearest, I always have a card left to play."
She then opens the third and final letter and begins to read;
/
"My Dearest Olivia,
If you are reading this letter I know that my son Fitzgerald finally found you and you him. This is the THIRD letter I left behind in the hopes that you two would find each other. Your Grandpa Joe, always told me so much about you. From the pictures he gave me, you grew into a beautiful, smart, and courageous young woman. My Fitzgerald's heart has been intertwined with since meeting you all those years ago.
He never stopped waiting and watching for you Livy. (I hope that I can call you that. You Grandpa Joe, told me that was his nickname for you.) Every time we came home to Rose Point, Fitz always inquired about the little girl he met in the apple dress. He wondered how you did in school. If you got good grades, what you were studying in college. But as you got older, if another man was able to capture your heart.
You touched my son in so many ways that day, Livy. You woke him up to his true self. You made him realize, that if he waited long enough, he could have everything he ever wanted in one woman. I am sure you know by now that woman is you. He will love you with everything he has and more. Fitz can give you a life you've only dreamed about, if you allow him. Fitz is NOTHING like his father. He will be faithful and true to you; not doing so, would be his undoing.
But I fear as my eternal sleep approaches, that there was one thing he did not know about, that could be his undoing. I wrote this to you, in the hopes that he would understand. Your voice in this letter will be the voice of reason. Your voice will bring him out the darkness and turmoil. Hearing this heartbreaking news, will break his heart and change him. You alone Olivia can heal not only his heart but his soul. Fitz is no ordinary man Livy, but with you by his side he can become extraordinary.
Unknown to your mother and my conniving husband, I heard one of their latest conversations. Apparently my suspicions were corrected that Fitz did not met and marry Mellie by accident. It was all a plan, to keep him away from you and vice versa. Fitz of course knew this was an arranged political marriage, and made it known that he did not love Mellie the way he should. His father hoped in time that would change, but that never happened. They stayed together to see him become Governor, and have my grandchildren. But I do hope one day, they will divorce.
But my dear girl, what Fitz does know how meeting Mellie came to pass, or why. It was not by chance that they met. Apparently it your mother's part of her deal she made with my husband. She told him that if she helped him seek out the perfect political wife for Fitz, in turn he would keep Fitz away from Rose Point and you.
Your mother, knew Mellie's family. The Hemming's, I overheard were friends with your grandmother's side of the family. I guess your Grandma Josie's family was a major distributor in the south for the hooch Mellie's family made. I am not sure if you ever knew that.
It turns out, that your Grandmother's sister became close friends with Mellie's mother and father. Your mother heard about this and the next time, your Aunt was around, she put the idea in her head to introduce Fitz and Mellie. Your Aunt mentioned it to Mellie's family, and she tagged along with her father to met Big Jerry for the first meeting.
My husband obviously thought she was perfect to become a Grant. About a year later they were married. Your mother told Fitz's father that she held up her end of their deal. That he best to do his part , and keep you away from you. All it would take was one chance meeting for you and him to occur and Fitz would divorce her, and be with you. Neither one of them wanted that to happen.
I wish I found this information out sooner but now that my life is coming to an end, I hope this letter gets to you. I hope that you can save my son from the Wicked Witch of the West, and become the woman he has longed for in his life. You see Livy some men are born to be happy, but others are born to be great. I have no doubt that Fitz can be both with you by his side.
I know by you finding this letter, that he found you. After all this time that has probably passed, I hope you realize that you two are soul mates. Take care of him for me Livy. With you by his side, he can be the greatest leader this country has ever seen.
If your mother is still alive, tell her that true love always wins out in the end. What you have with Fitz goes beyond true love. It's painful, life changing, devastating, extraordinary love. Do not let her or anyone take that away from you and my son. Do not let anyone tell you that you are not good enough. You are more than good enough for my son and the White House. You my dear girl, are perfection. If Fitz's father is still alive, you can tell him for me that I hope he rots in Hell.
To my Fitz, I love you and take care of each other. I must rest now. I love you both very much. I'll be watching over both of you in heaven.
All my love,
Lillian Rose Grant

WE ARE DONE!
Olivia folded the letter back up, and looked at her mother. "You are evil," she told her. "Sit down and don't move." Adelyn surprisingly sat and didn't say a word.
Olivia turned to face Fitz. He was now sitting on a bar stool, looking pale and as white as a ghost. Her father had his hand on his back. "It's going be okay Son. Livy is coming over to you."
But Fitz just stared ahead. It was like he didn't hear a word he said. He heard the last lines of his mother's third and final letter, and shut out the world. He knew Louis was beside him trying to comfort him. In this moment he fell down the rabbit whole, and could not climb out.
He sensed Olivia approaching him. Fitz had come to learn that he sensed her, before she touched him. He didn't say anything and when Olivia looked down she saw that his hands were shaking. There was no emotion in his face, or eyes. He visibly looked like he was going to be ill. She began to call his name, and got no response. The closer she began to him, the more she could see that he was emotionally spent, and that he needed her.
Fitz got up. "Don't touch me," he whimpered at Olivia. "I'm fine."
He backed away and didn't want to know anymore. His whole life had been manipulated and controlled, by two people. His father, because he could never become President, and wanted a Grant in the White House. Then was his girlfriend's mother, who kept her from him because of his family's legacy and background.
He did not know if Mellie ever knew the truth. If they spoke again, he would ask her to see if she knew the truth about their relationship. Mellie did not like to be used in any fashion, and this would probably upset her also.
"No you're not fine. My mother and your father ruined practically ruined your life- our lives. You not fine, Fitz" she voiced, lowering her voice hoping that she could reach him.
"Livy please don't touch me," Fitz begged. "I can't….don't," he said through fighting his tears. But the time he finished his last words, Olivia had him pressed against her kitchen counter. Fitz was practically climbing it, attempting to get away from her touch. He never thought he would be terrified of her touch, but right now, if she touched him, he would never release her.
Olivia finally reached out and touched his hands. They were clammy. She turned him around and sat herself up on the counter. She opened her legs, and pulled him into her body. He closed his eyes, unable to look at her. He needed her, to feel her body, encompass his own. He was not ready for the emotions it would unleash.
"Fitz," she felt him nuzzle his face into her palm, as she touched his face. "I'm here. It's okay. I am not going anywhere, EVER. Just tell me what you need."
Fitz still had his eyes closed. Olivia then took his hands and placed them on her back, pulling into her body closer. She ran her hands up his chest, then finally around his neck. His breathing finally began to calm, and starting to breath along with her.
Olivia pulled his head down and kissed him lightly on the lips. She heard him whisper, "I need you. Don't ever leave me. My whole life has been a lie."
"No it has not. You are extraordinary Fitz. I am lucky to have you," repeating the words she told him the day the met. Fitz finally opened his eyes and saw her looking at him with the faintest smile.
"I am lucky to have you too," and he kissed her back. He did not deepen it, but she could feel him begin to break down. Olivia looked and saw that her father had taken her mother out of the room to give them privacy.
"It's okay Fitz. No one is here but us. My Dad took my Mom out to the garage. You don't have to be the strong one right now. Showing your emotions does not make you weak. It just makes you stronger, and allows you to overcome anything. Letting me see your tears right now changes nothing. I am here and will continue to be for as long as you want me."
"I will always want you Livy, always," he whimpered and finally cried, holding onto her. She felt his legs begin to go down and held him up the best she could. She told him that if he collapses on the floor, that he'll take her with her. She heard him chuckle. On the top of her fridge, she saw something and reached for it.
"Fitz," she said. "Look."
Fitz looked up and saw the sugar. He finally smiled back and told her, "You are my something sweet. Thank you Olivia."
"No Thank you," she told him back. She was about to say something else to him when she saw her parents come back into the house. Her Dad made her mother sit down, and asked if Fitz was okay. She told him yes.
Olivia then jumped down off the counter. She then began to walk to her mother. Fitz stood behind her, and looked on. "I only have one more question for you, Mother. Why?"
"Why, what dear?" Adelyn scoffed.
"Why did you work with Big Jerry? Why did you help him find Mellie? Do you realize the damage you caused?" Olivia could feel the anger, beginning to reach its boiling point.
"I did it because I wanted better for you. I wanted you to be an extraordinary woman Olivia. I wanted you away from the Grants. I saw the connection in that picture, after your Papa told me what happened. I knew IF The President ever found you, I'd lose my daughter."
"You did this because you didn't want to lose me. That is control Momma, not love. You practically ruined his life and mine, all for what. So you could prove that you were the person in charge?"
"No," was all her mother responded.
"THEN WHY?" Olivia was finally letting her emotions show.
"I raised you, your older brother and sister to be strong and independent human beings. I don't want you to have to answer to anyone unless it's God. I don't want you to belong, or be controlled by anyone…" her mother tried finished but Olivia then screamed practically knocking Fitz and father off their feet. Even Mitch and Stephen ran into the room.
"CONTROLLED BY ANYONE-UNLESS IT'S BY YOU! I WAIT FOR HIM. I WATCH FOR HIM. MY WHOLE LIFE HAS BEEN ABOUT HIM! I CAN'T BREATH BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR FITZ. HE OWNS ME; HE CONTROLS ME; I BELONG TO HIM!"
The power in Olivia's voiced is one that not even her father has heard before. He can feel its force from where he's standing. Even if he wanted to move, Louis feels as if he would have gotten blown over. Adelyn is visibility stunned. Her father sees the fear in her eyes. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that he daughter, would become this now worthy adversary before her.
Fitz is so taken back that he sits there for a moment shocked by her revelation. He begins to get up and hears, "YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH HELL YOU'VE PUT ME THROUGH BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T WANT ME WITH FITZ. I'VE HAD IT," pointing at her mother.
Then behind her, Olivia hears Fitz bellow, "SHE OWNS ME. SHE CONTROLS ME. I BELONG TO HER," shocking Olivia, with just as much passion.
Fitz then walks up to her mother and roars, "YOU THINK, I DON'T WANT TO BE A BETTER MAN. YOU THINK THAT I DON'T WANT TO DEDICATE MYSELF TO MY PRESIDENCY, AND MY CHILDREN. YOU THINK THAT I DON'T WANT TO BE THE HONORABLE MAN, THAT CAME INTO HER CLASSROOM; THE MAN SHE VOTED FOR."
Adelyn sits there even more stunned and unable to move. She swallows quickly, floored as to these events. Fitz then turns to Olivia and begins to walk in her direction. "My every feeling is controlled by the look on your face. I can't breathe without you. I can't sleep without you. I wait and watch for you. I exist for you. If you think I could escape my Grant name and run away with you, I would. I would give it all up for you in a heartbeat Livy. All you have to do is ask," Fitz says back to Olivia.
He then faces Adelyn. "You practically ruined my life because you didn't want me with your daughter. You are a jealous, petty, and weak woman. I am nothing like Big Jerry. I am NEVER letting your daughter go. Don't you get that. It will never be over between Livy and I. You are just going to have to deal with it."
Fitz faces Olivia and sees her tears begin to cascade down her cheeks. She bites her lip in nervousness, causing Fitz to smile at her. "Don't do that?"
"What," she mouths, still unable to speak at the moment. She was not expecting him to lash out at her mother like that either. Him repeating the same heated words, she screamed only moments before.
"Bite your lip. It's so adorable that it makes me want to kiss you even more." Fitz finally smiles at her, causing her to chuckle. She wraps her arms around his torso and squeezes. He feels her body begin to shake, coming down off the adrenaline high, it was just on. Louis asks if she is all right and Fitz is not sure.
"I'm here Livy. I'm here." Fitz coos in her ear.
She sees her mother begin to get up. "This is not over Olivia dear."
She looks to Fitz and she lets him hold onto her. "Oh yes this is. WE. ARE. DONE. From this moment on you are DEAD to me. I don't to see, hear, or talk to you ever again. I will tell, with Daddy's help the entire family what happened. You ARE going to lose everything. I will make sure of it."
"Olivia," her mother tried to protest, but her father stopped her.
"Adelyn shut the hell up." Louis finally bellowed at his wife. "You have done enough. I am on MY daughter's and Fitz's side. You LOST everything. WE ARE DONE."
"Louis you don't mean that." Adelyn tries to touch him, but he whips her hand away.
"Oh yes I do. I am going home to pack a bag. I am going to stay here with Olivia, to make sure you do not come back here. You have 48 hours to move out," Louis told her.
"What. You can't make me leave that house. We're will I go." Adelyn began to show some emotion.
"Not my problem dearie," Louis sneered at her. "Forty-Eight hours is all you have. And do not contact our other children to stay with them. I already texted them, and they know you have done something seriously wrong. I am going there now. You best be gone by the time I get back. If not I will call the police to physically remove you."
Olivia's eyes widened. "Daddy you can't…"
"I am not going to tell them you are dating the President of the United States, Pumpkin. I am just going to let them know that your mother, the Wicked Witch of the East, kept you from the man of your dreams for very long time. I'll tell them what I am able to disclose, leaving out the fact that Fitz is President. That is for you to spring on them, when you both are ready."
"Thank you Louis," Fitz said. "If I have to I'll have some agents stay behind to protect Olivia once I leave in three days."
"No need Fitz. I am sure her friends and I have that covered. You have not met her protective older brother, and her sister yet. Trust me they will see that Adelyn is kept away. I may not be President, but I do have some power." Louis assured him.
Fitz still had his arm around Olivia's waist. Her face was buried in his shirt. Louis came and kissed his daughter and shook Fitz's hand. "I'll take care of her," Fitz told him.
"That son I have no doubt," her father said, and basically forced her mother out the door before she could say another word. Fitz instructed Mitch and Stephen to stand by, just in case Olivia wanted to head up to Rose Point.
When it was finally Olivia and Fitz alone, he looked down and saw that she was looking up at him. She had tears in her eyes, and really didn't know what to say. She had the urge to pull away. Fitz must have known, because he gripped onto her tighter. Then without warning, he scooped her up and carried her to her room.
He placed her gently on the bed, and took her shoes off. She watched him, sit her up, pull the covers down, and place her back down. He was being so tender and sweet. He then took off his shoes, and sweater. She saw him walk to the other side, and climb in next to her. Immediately his arms, wrapped around her small body, pulling her back into his chest.
He let her turn around so she could face him. She leaned her head in and touched her forehead to his. Both their breathing was labored, and he kissed every part of her face to calm her down. She mouthed his name, still unable to say anything else. "I'm here. Just don't push me away okay."
She shook her head up and down, telling Fitz that she wouldn't. She leaned in and kissed him on his lips. As the kiss deepened he felt Olivia's body begin to cave in on itself. He knew this was coming. He kept telling her that he was there and that she didn't have to be strong anymore. She began to shake violently, and finally she stopped kissing him and began to wail in his embrace.
He rocked her body back and forth, and let her cry. His shirt was drenched from her tears, and he felt his own come down his face. He ran his hands up and down her back, pulling her close to his chest. If he pulled her any closer, he may suffocate her.
"Tighter Fitz," she said in sob. "Don't let me go. Don't let me go."
"Never," was all he could say in return. Finally after she could cry no more, she looked up into his eyes. She saw everything she's ever hoped for and dreamt about since a little girl. He was there with her, and after everything, he was hers; really hers. She was not going to let anyone tear them apart.
She finally started to breathe normally, and felt Fitz breath along with her. She got up on her arms and gazed into his eyes. "What," he asked her.
Olivia then took in one more labored breath and uttered, "Take me home with you."

Phew….Oh my God…are you are coming down from this highly charged emotional chapter. I hope I lived up to the "Shondaland" logo and took you on a kick-ass ride. I am literally spent, typing this.
So know you know EVERYTHING (or do you). How Fitz and Adelyn know each other, and why she hates him so much. What was in letter number two. I hope I delivered on that plot line. IT was fun seeing your "crumbs" for letter numb 2 and now you KNOW the truth.
Big Jerry and Adelyn were working together to keep them apart. But the big shocker was in Letter numb 3. Adelyn helped Big Jerry find Mellie for Fitz to marry. #HolyFitz that's all I got to say. Olivia's mother is a piece of work, isn't she? Did any of you think that is what I had in mind for those two final letters. I NEVER planned on having them be related or the parents having an affair...yuck.
Now those last five words... "Take me home with you." HOLY FITZ did she just really ask him that. But what will Fitz say? Thoughts….

Oh and now I have one more bomb to drop on you. When Chap 15 posts that will be the last chapter of Christmas in Vermont. Gosh I can hear you all screaming "NO." (Falling down and fanning yourselves.) I know don't hate me but Fitz does have to leave for home.
I have "plans" in the works for a sequel. It is going to be called "Covered Bridges." (I'll let you ponder about the title and why I chose it.) It should premiere around Feb 27th.
To all of you following me on twitter, TY so much.
PLEASE leave me tons of CRUMBS! The more DING and DONGS I get in my inbox…the sooner you'll get the final chapter.
I hope you enjoyed this HUGE revelation of a chapter. I worked my bootie off on it. Lord I am spent. (Panting on the floor.)
Peace, Luv and Pumpkins….Me's
