Chapter Fourteen

Isabelle was leaning her head against the side of the Jeep watching the countryside go by. She wondered where George was right now. Annabelle said from the beginning that Isabelle loved him. Isabelle couldn't even remember what he sounded like. She could remember their conversations, but she couldn't remember the timber of his voice and all she wanted was to hear it in her ear.

The German Army had surrendered. The United States Army had decided that since some troops were going to be stationed in Austria that it would be a good idea to send a couple of nurses up, as well as a doctor, to manage any medical concerns that may come up. And Isabelle had been plucked to follow them to Austria, to serve as the supervising Head Nurse.

Isabelle had found out that Jeanette had died in her sleep after catching a bad case of pneumonia. It was found out a week afterwards her fiancé died on the same day. Clara was sent into Germany and was heading home to her small provincial town in French Riviera. Annabelle was fine. She was sent around Europe, but was now headed back to London, to help her family out. They still wrote to each other as often as they can. Isabelle was concerned for her good friend, her letters were vague and her previously perfect cursive was now shaky and uneven.

Isabelle watched the beautiful Austrian countryside roll by until they stopped outside a large white building with deep chocolate brown trim. "These will be your lodgings, ma'am." She looked up at Colonel Sink.

"Thank you, sir." She got out with his help, and the Colonel walked up the front garden path with her. Isabelle marvelled at the perfect little garden that was outside the front of this gorgeous house. It was shocking to realize that there were still beautiful things in this world. Places untouched by horror.

"There are a five nurses who will be in your command." Major Louis Kent said, who had been travelling with the colonel, overseeing the medical personnel postings. "One of you will be stationed at the Troops lodgings for an hour three times a day as a sort of walk in clinic." Isabelle considered saying this was a bad idea. Putting young nurses in that close contact with young replacement soldiers was a very bad idea, like anything would get done. She held her tongue. "We are awaiting to go through our staffing detail before we will know when you will be headed to Japan."

Isabelle swallowed. Japan. A new war. More death, more destruction. She felt numb. "Major, will we be deploying with the troops?" She asked.

The Major met her eyes, "We aren't sure. There is a possibility you will be redeployed sooner." Isabelle nodded.

Colonel Sink stood in front of her, flanked by Major Kent, "We are damned thankful for everything you, and the ladies, have given to the men of this Army, and we will do our damnedest to make sure you get everything you need. Now you ladies get some deserved rest, and let me know if the men give you any trouble."

Isabelle smiled, "Thank you Colonel." He and the Major both saluted her and then turned on their heels and walked back to the jeep.

Isabelle looked up at the house she would be staying in. Suddenly a thought hit Isabelle. She turned desperately back to the street to stop the Jeep but before she could ask the Colonel what unit or battalion would be stationed there, she watched the jeep pull away from the curb.

'Oh well,' She thought. She only had to wait until tomorrow when the troops arrived.
