I'm typically a very light sleeper. There haven't been many occasions in which I find myself in such a deep sleep that I don't sense movement around me, or wake up from noise being made. It does happen on occasion though, as it did today. What finally woke me was the smell of pancakes and the sound of my sink running - my eyes snapped open, recalling the events of the previous night in an instant. Kissing Ran. Sleeping with her. What the hell was I thinking?
Face it, Kurama. Last night was the best sleep you'd had in months. True as that may be, it didn't excuse my deplorable actions.
I rose from the futon and joined Ran in the kitchen. There was a stack of pancakes on a plate next to the stove, and she was scrubbing at a skillet in the sink. When I looked over her shoulder, she gazed up at me - her eyes wide, wavering. I knew it, she already regretted what had happened. I did what I could to mentally prepare myself for her rejection.
"I made pancakes..." Her voice was shaky, lowered to a near pitiful volume. She was quiet for a few moments and then whispered, "I think I ruined your skillet..."
For the first time I moved my eyes from her and onto the cookware in the sink. A large, dark brown mark covered the bottom and most of the sides of the pan. She had managed to scrape some of it off, but it was obviously doomed. I shook my head, finding myself laughing out loud at the absurdity - I had expected to wake up and hear her say she hated me, that she wanted nothing to do with me. The second I had seen that look in her eyes I was certain I had lost her ...But her panic was over ruining a skillet while making me breakfast.
I calmed myself down when I saw the strong pout on her face. Resisting more laughter, I took the skillet from her and set it aside. "That's not even remotely important. You're remarkable, Ran."
Her expression became panicked once again, but this time her face flushed with a deep red. She stammered over her words a bit, eventually whispering, "I made pancakes," one more time.
A/N: I know this is more of a drabble than anything, but since it didn't fit well with the next chapter I decided I'd post it as a bit of an extra.
