"AGAIN?" Mercedes screamed in the middle of the iHop she, Kurt, and Devon were in. The little boy wasn't thrilled to hear his favorite auntie scream at his daddy, so he threw his board book down on the ground and burst into tears.
"Great," Kurt mumbled as he turned Devon around to face him and laid him against his chest. "Shh, it's okay Dev. Mercedes isn't angry," he said as he looked up at her with a sheepish smile.
She took a deep breath, and he swore he heard her say a short prayer, before she said, "No, I'm not mad. Come here, Sweetie." She held out her arms for him and he slowly crawled to her lap. "I'm sorry for making you cry." Once Devon had calmed down again and started eating his pancakes, they went back to their original argument. "You're pregnant? Again? How?"
"Yes, yes, and same as the first time," he answered, trying to defuse the tension with a little humor.
"And have you thought about your, you know, options?" she asked uncomfortably. She was a woman of God, but she also knew how bad her best friend's situation already was without another baby.
"I went in to get an," he waved his hands because he didn't want the whole restaurant to know, "but I couldn't go through with it. I'm gonna have this baby," he said as he rested his hand against his stomach.
"What did Alex say?"
"Exactly what I thought he would. I called him right after I got home from the clinic. He said he was too young to be a dad, but he did say he would pay child support."
Mercedes put her hand that wasn't holding Devon on Kurt's shaking leg. "I'm so sorry, Boo."
He placed his hand on top of hers. "Thanks, but to be honest, I'm not disappointed. Sure, it would have been helpful to have another pair of hands, but I don't really know this guy that well and I didn't think we had any sort of future. I didn't even introduce him to Devon."
"Well, you know I will always be there for you in any way I can."
Kurt closed his eyes as he took a relieved breath. "Thanks 'Cedes."
A SMALL HOSPITAL IN FLORDIA…
Burt waited for hours before he got any news of Blaine's condition. As they ran Blaine to the ER, one of the nurses noticed Blaine had blood seeping through his pants, so they cut them open to see a huge a gash on his left knee and everything below it turning black and purple. They immediately took him to the OR. One of the nurses stayed back and asked if he was a family member. When he shook his head no, the nurse rushed out of the room to inform the doctors. His doctor checked him over and asked him questions to see if he had any memory problems. Once they confirmed all he had was a broken arm, two broken ribs, and a twisted ankle, they started patching him up. That didn't take too long, so he spent the rest of the time waiting for news on Blaine. He asked if he could get a phone to call Kurt and finally tell him he was alive, but none of the nurses have given him one yet and he couldn't get up with his broken ribs.
Then, abruptly the door swung open to reveal a distraught and out of breath Tina. "Mr. Hummel! Finally. It has taken me forever to find out where they brought you and Blaine. Where is Blaine? Did he need surgery? Is he going to be okay?"
"Tina, breathe," Burt instructed.
She took a few deep breaths, before walking over to the side of his bed and saying. "I'm sorry, it's just, everyone thought you were dead. You and Blaine. Kurt's just been really stressed and upset about it and I don't understand what happened to you guys?"
Burt's heart ached when he heard about how much Kurt had been hurting. It's understandable, he did lose his father and boyfriend, but it still just made his mental pain worse than his physical pain.
"We've been through a lot. Can you please give me your phone so that I can call Kurt?"
Tina immediately pulled her phone out of her back pocket and dialed Kurt's number. She then took the phone and placed it between Burt's shoulder and ear.
"I'll give you some privacy," she whispered, then turned to walk out of the room.
The phone rang several times that Burt was almost certain it would go to voicemail, but when it got to the last ring, he finally heard the most beautiful voice say, "Hey Tina. It's been a while."
"K-Kurt," Burt said, tears already starting to pour from his eyes.
Kurt was silent for a few moments, before saying, "Oh, sorry I thought this was my friend's number. Who are you?"
"It's me, Buddy. It's your dad."
Smash.
Burt jolted in his bed but didn't move to sit up due to the pain. "KURT," he yelled through the phone.
It sounded like something was being shuffled on the other line, then he heard, "Don't call this number again. I don't care who thinks it's funny to steal my friend's phone and pretend to be my dead father, but-"
"-Kurt, you were born May 23rd, 1993. Your mother, Elizabeth, was the most beautiful woman I ever knew, and she passed away when you were eight years old. You had a funeral for a bird when you were in high school. You were obsessed with the Glee Club. Once when you were seven you had a bad cold, but you convinced your mother to send you to school so that you could be in the talent show."
"Dad?" Kurt whispered, unsure of his own words.
"I promise you Kurt, it's me."
"Ho-how are you alive?" Kurt asked, and Burt could tell by the way he was speaking, that he had started to tear up as well. Burt recited everything he could about what had happened to himself and Blaine and when he uttered the younger boy's name, Kurt's heart stopped. When he told Kurt that Blaine was in worse condition than himself and in surgery, Kurt couldn't breathe. Finally, when Burt was done, Kurt asked, "What hospital are you at? I'm coming there right now."
Burt told him the hospital, and Kurt tried to figure out the best way to get down there with no money, a one year old and bad morning sickness. Then, right on time, Mercedes burst through the door and Kurt yelled at her to pack Devon's things and go on a car trip with him. Once Kurt explained, Mercedes immediately agreed before handing Devon to Kurt and packing for the bunch. Devon was tired since he had been out right through his nap time, so he cried when he was moved from Mercedes side.
"Who's crying?" Burt asked, making Kurt stop in his tracks. He'd forgotten about Devon. He'd forgotten that neither Blaine, nor Burt, knew about his existence at all. They didn't even know Kurt was pregnant and now he is again with a child of someone they never met. This was going to be a long trip.
"Uhh, dad. There's something I need to tell you."
