Happy Christmas to all! Here is an update. Thank you so much for your unfailing enthusiasm and much needed patience for this story. I rewrote this chapter a few times, obsessed a lot, pieced bits from each version together and finally got it done. Not sure how satisfied I am, but hopefully you all will enjoy it.

Happy Holidays to those of you celebrating and happy life to those of you who are not :)

.

Klaus burst through the doors of Marcel's home, pushing past the vampire lackey standing guard, and yelling for Bonnie and Kol. It had only taken him seconds to sprint at vampire speed to the town house, with Caroline wrapped up in his arms, but it was long enough for the dreadful sense of déjà vu to come over him.

He remembered the wolves attacking, in the forests outside his home in London, centuries ago. He remembered Caroline's limp, feverish body, crumbling against his chest. Even though he had barely begun to care about her then, he remembered the haunting feeling of unfinished business sweeping through him. He remembered the sense of regret he felt, as he had never felt before. He remembered feeling that he was unable to protect her, a feeling that he hadn't felt beyond the bonds of family until she stumbled into his life.

The feeling was coming back again, even stronger this time.

He pushed it away, and called out again, his voice bellowing through the townhouse.

"They're in the study," the vampire called Thierry told him. He pointed at the large bundle in Klaus's hands that was Caroline still wrapped inside the large curtain. "What the hell is that?"

Klaus ignored the man, heading to the study and barging in. Kol and Bonnie were on their feet.

"What's the matter?" Bonnie asked.

"What's is that?" Kol pointed, repeating Thierry's question.

Klaus set the buddle on the couch and Bonnie gasped when she saw it was Caroline. The blonde moaned in pain, her hands moving to clutch at her stomach now that she was free of the wrap.

"That smelled terrible," Caroline complained, her voice weak.

Klaus brushed a hand over her head, pushing her hair from her face. "I'm sorry, love." He said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. He turned to Bonnie, still kneeling next to Caroline on the couch. "She's wounded," he said pulling away her hand. The glass was still imbedded in her side. Klaus knew not to pull it from the wound-that the shard could be all that was keeping her from bleeding out.

Bonnie took her cue to action, kneeling next to Caroline and looking her over.

Thierry let out a scoff from the doorway. "If you're so desperate to save your blood bag, why don't you just take her to a human doctor?"

Klaus growled, flashed over to him, wrapping vengeful fingers around his throat. "Get out," he snarled, throwing him back and slamming to study door shut. Putting the vampire from his mind, he returned to Caroline's side.

"I know a spell," Bonnie said. "But it's difficult, I'm not sure how effective it will be since I can't touch her without losing my powers."

She stood up and went to one of the small books left on the table, picking it up and flipping through it. Her brown eyes darted over the parchment and her lips moved in silent recitation. Klaus bit at his tongue to keep silent while she took her time. A few moments later she nodded and shut the book.

"Kol," she said, a commanding air settling around her. "Call Stefan. Tell him to get here fast. He has some medical knowledge and can suture her wound if I screw up."

Kol stepped towards her, some silent conversation passing between the two of them, his eyes flicking across her face. "You be careful with this," he warned. "You know the—"

"I know," Bonnie interrupted. "It'll be okay. She isn't that close, I can feel it."

He nodded. "I'll grab some food for you. You'll need it."

Kol disappeared through the door, shutting it again. Klaus felt Bonnie stand next him again, but his eyes were focused on Caroline. Her breaths had grown shallow and he was doing his best to keep her conscious, afraid of what might happen if she fell asleep.

Bonnie knelt again and spoke to him. "I've been reading about healing spells," she said. "I've learned a few. But I haven't been able to try them. I'm not sure if this will work." Klaus opened his mouth to threaten her, but thought better of it. He knew that the girl wouldn't let anything happen to Caroline. "Care?" Bonnie turned her attention to her friend.

"Hey, Bon," she replied with a sleepy smile.

"I'm gonna try something," the witch said. "Hold still."

Caroline gave a little nod and Bonnie placed her hands just over the wound in Caroline's stomach. The witch let her eyes fall closed and sucked in a large breath. She exhaled the incantation, the words falling from her lips like a haunting song. Magic swirled up into the air around them.

Caroline let out a groan, but nothing happened, and Bonnie opened one eye to see the results of her magic. Her hands dropped. "We have to take out the glass," she stated. "I can't heal her while it's still in her stomach."

Klaus nodded. "I'll remove it." He didn't trust himself to not hurt Caroline more, but he also didn't trust himself to sit still and watch her in pain as Bonnie attempted to take it out. "Hold her arm."

Bonnie held up Caroline's arm and Klaus moved his hands over the piece of glass. "On the count of three," Caroline steeled herself for the pain. He hesitated for a moment. She could bleed out. If Bonnie couldn't make the spell work, Caroline could bleed to death. "One..two…"

Klaus pulled the shard from Caroline's stomach and she screamed out in pain. "You said three!"

"It hurts less when you don't see it coming," he replied, throwing the glass onto the table. The jagged triangle was much larger than he had thought, the idea that she might have punctured an organ came to mind.

Bonnie was already focusing again beside him, holding her hands out and murmuring the same incantation. Klaus looked down at the wound. Blood was still pushing its way out of her body and, for a moment he thought it was because she was bleeding out. It took him a few tense moments to realize that it was the spell. Her flesh was knitting itself back together from the inside out. It was quick, not painless judging by Caroline's whimpers, when the skin finally came together again, smoothing over so that all remained of the injury was the tale-tell rip and bloodstains on her dress.

Kol reentered the room just as they finished; under his arm was a bottle of juice. "You did it." Kol said, looking down at Caroline who was no longer bleeding.

Bonnie shifted, standing up. "Yeah," she said proudly, letting out a satisfied breath of a job well done. She stumbled and Kol moved forward, catching her and settling her down on the couch across from where Caroline was laying. "You need sugar," he said handing her the bottle.

Bonnie nodded, taking a sip, letting Kol tend to her. She smiled up gratefully after a few swallows. "Can I sleep now?"

Kol chuckled at her delirious tone. "Of course, darling," he said, lowering her back to the couch as her eyes fell closed. A moment later she was fast asleep. It was the second time that day a Mikaelson man had shown uncharacteristic tenderness.

"Bonnie has the right idea," Caroline murmured from her couch. Klaus looked at her, relief washing over him at seeing a bit of her color return and watching her chest rise and fall at a normal rate. She was still too pale, though. He cursed, wishing his blood could heal her fully. "Take me upstairs?"

Klaus nodded, lifting her up, this time letting himself fall human under her bare touch, and walked her upstairs. Kol did the same with Bonnie, putting her into her own room.

The two brothers joined one another again in the study. "It's the spell," Kol told him. "She sacrifices her strength and passes it onto the someone who is wounded." There was a bit of blood on the couch where Caroline had been laying. "It can have dire effects for the witch casting it, depending on how close to death someone is or the severity of their wounds."

"I didn't ask for a lesson in witchcraft," Klaus snapped. Even though he was glad Caroline was all right, irritation still prickled at the back of his neck.

"I'm simply pointing out the fact that Bonnie could die, trying to save her friend this way," Kol continued.

"So, have you and the witch made any progress with your studies or have you been too busy flirting?"

Kol gave him a dry smile. "Actually, Bonnie and I have stumbled across something interesting. It's called Obligatwa."

"Binding?" Klaus translated.

Kol nodded. "It's a spell similar to the one our mother and father used to bind your werewolf side when you became a vampire. She couldn't stop you from being what you already were and she couldn't reverse the vampire spell, so she created a more powerful one."

"And what would we be binding?"

"Her mortal half," Kol clarified. "She would be only vampire again. Just like when mother bound your werewolf side, you became solely vampire."

Klaus didn't like the idea of binding. Hearing it brought back too many memories of pain and weakness. He recalled the pain involved in the spell with a shudder.

He turned toward the window, staring out at the fading day. Orange began to brush over the sky as the sun dipped down. His problems seem to be rapidly increasing. Not only was Caroline susceptible to Silas, and whatever the immortal had planned, but she was also vulnerable to any number of mundane accidents that could occur, just like that afternoon.

His rolled his tongue over his teeth. Klaus would do anything to keep Caroline by his side. When it came to keeping her alive and protected, any means would be justified in the end. But perhaps there were limits, he thought.

.

Evening had fallen, when Klaus decided to venture upstairs to check on Caroline. He had sipped a few glasses of brandy with Kol and Stefan, when he had returned. Kol discussed his plan with the Salvatore vampire and Klaus listened, but didn't hear their conversation. He was too much in his own mind.

After a while, he rose from his seat on the couch, and headed for the stairs.

"Where are you going?" Kol inquired, dumping the last of the bottle into his glass.

"Upstairs," Klaus replied. "I should be there when she wakes."

He heard Kol mutter something behind them about he and Caroline making up and that he and Stefan would be on their own that night. Klaus let the commentary go as he took the stairs two at a time.

When he reached their floor, he frowned. Caroline's voice could be heard in the guest room opposite his own. She had already awoken.

He stood in the doorway watching her pace back and forth, her phone at her ear.

"I don't care if the space is booked up. We're not having prom in our gym. That's tacky," she paused, scoffing at the response on the other end. "Call them back tomorrow. And confirm our red carpet rental, oh and see if you can find a place that rents out flatscreen TV's. Also, get everyone to collect a bunch of pictures together of the senior class from our four years together. I'm having a burst of inspiration…"

Klaus listened to her go on about the prom to the unfortunate dance committee minion on the other end. A chuckle rumbled in his chest when he heard her threaten violence, and her eyes snapped up to his.

Her mouth fell open into a little "O" shape and she seemed to lose her train of thought.

"Just get it done," she commanded, recovering. "I'll be out of town a couple more days. I'll call you tomorrow to check your progress." She hung up the phone and tossed it over to her bed, letting out a sigh.

"Prom planning not going as smoothly as you hoped?"

She rolled her eyes. "I know it's stupid to you, but it's important to me," she said. "I can't believe I have to threaten lives just to get anything done."

Klaus stepped into the room. "As I've learned over the centuries, it's the only way of getting anything accomplished."

"Yeah, but I don't plan on actually following through with any of the threats," she countered. "Unlike some people."

"Perhaps you should snap a few necks, love. Just to keep them on their toes."

He stood close to her now. Her hair was still tangled and she still wore the bloodied clothes from earlier. He could see the tear in her dress, and the spot where there should have been a deep gash, there was nothing but smooth skin. Without realizing it, he had reached up, his fingers trailing along the edge of the torn fabric.

Caroline sucked in a small breath and his gaze flicked up, momentarily stunned by the look in her eyes. He didn't need the spread of veins to read the hunger in her eyes. It matched the red tide of desire rushing through his veins.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, his voice low and thick.

"Fine," she murmured. "Amazing, actually. I feel like I've slept for a week straight."

"It must be the spell," Klaus said.

"Yep," she agreed.

They stared at each other, bodies stilled, eyes locked together.

He inhaled.

She exhaled.

And in the space of their mingled breaths, he was reaching for her.

His hands lifted up to weave into her curls and pull her mouth to his. Caroline let out an anxious moan as their lips crashed together, making any sense of control he had a distant memory.

Klaus slanted his mouth over hers, plunging his tongue past her lips and drinking her in. Her hands slid around to his back, nails digging into his shoulders, pressing him closer. It wasn't enough.

He shifted, lifting her up, the frantic moving causing their teeth to knock between their lips. Caroline knew there would be bruises, but she didn't care as she hitched her legs around his waist and he rushed her backwards.

She hit the wall with a thud, her breath coming out as a heady moan and Klaus set his lips to her neck, moving his way down the column of her throat to her collarbone. His teeth nipped at her clavicle and she writhed shamelessly against him, feeling the hardness in his pants brushing against her core.

Her fingers threaded through his curls and she breathed his name, the sound of it sweet music to his ears.

"Bed," she murmured, unable to form coherent sentences.

He pulled her away from the wall, another delightful noise rushing from her lips, and carried her to the bed. He lightly tossed her onto the mattress, climbing over her, but not quite lowering his body flush against hers.

His necklaces dangled down, tickling her chest, as he hovered just above her. Caroline shivered at the predatory gaze in his eyes. A hint of gold shined within them and she swallowed hard, desire flooding through her down to the tips of her toes.

"It's been too long," Klaus whispered, his breath ghosting across her cheeks.

"I'm all bloody," she said, only slightly daunted by the fact that she needed a shower.

His lips moved against her cheek bone. "That's never bothered me before."

Her body arched up toward his, but he denied her touch, chuckling at her poorly disguised desire.

She bit her lip, another more serious worry crossing her mind. "We'll be human."

Klaus froze and Caroline regretted even bringing it up. There was a lot implied in that brief sentence, things that Klaus hadn't ever considered in a thousand years.

He hung his head near her shoulder for a moment before replying. "I suppose we've tempted fate enough these past months."

Some of the tension eased out of her at his reply. "Yeah, we have."

Her teeth ran across her lip in disappointment. She would probably be cringing in embarrassment if she wasn't about to combust from frustration. Klaus raised his head to meet her eyes, a wicked grin spreading across his face. She was about to tell him that he couldn't smile at her like that if they were going to have to pause on the sex, when he spoke.

"There are other things to enjoy, sweetheart," he moved off her and stood at the foot of the bed, extending one hand in her direction. He leveled his gaze directly toward her. "Come."

Caroline swore she would have done anything in that moment. The single command, accompanied by the heat in his eyes, rendered her utterly powerless. She felt her body crawling across the bed toward him, one foot hitting the floor, her hand sliding into his outstretched palm. He pulled her forward, so that she was standing.

His fingers slid along her arms, raising goosebumps in their path and reaching her palms. Caroline felt him raising her arms over her head, releasing them, a silent command for her to leave them where he had positioned.

His hands dropped to her back, his fingers pulling down her zipper, her still clothed breasts brushing against his chest. She felt the fabric loosen around her ribs and then his hands were at her hem, grasping it and pulling it up in the direction of her palms.

He tossed the torn and bloodied garment aside and stepped around her. She lowered her arms, but stayed completely still, seeing him lean down to her ear from the corner of her eye.

"I will taste you, Caroline," he said, dusting kisses across her shoulder. "Every decadent inch of your skin." Blunt teeth bit into her shoulder and she collapsed back against him, knees weak.

Caroline was so close to giving in, consequences be damned. But he moved lower, mapping a path around her ribs, to her stomach, tongue and teeth marking her along the way.

His fingers hooked around her underwear and he slid them down her thighs, tossing them near her discarded dress. He trailed his palms up her legs, starting at her ankles and tracing behind her knees, around her thighs, and cupping her smooth ass.

He peered up at her and Caroline couldn't help the feeling that surged through her at that moment. There was something erotic about having Klaus, who was quite possibly one of the most powerfully creatures in the entire world, kneeled before her.

"Spread your legs," he commanded. She shifted her feet and Klaus moved his face toward her core, feeling the heat of her against his cheek.

Klaus slid hand up the inner side of her leg, letting his fingers tease her lips, before sliding them between her folds. She was slick and wet and warm. Her head dropped back in a moan as he circled her clit with his thumb.

He pushed her back onto the bed, and her legs opened willingly, her body beckoning to him like a siren. He dipped his head forward, passing his tongue between her wet folds, hearing her hiss at the contact.

Caroline's breaths increased as he continued to work her over with his tongue, bringing her close to the brink and then backing away again. She was nearly over the edge when he pulled away and she barely recognized her own voice when she growled out his name in protest.

"Klaus!"

His dark gaze snapped to hers and she gave him a look that was part desire and part desperation he was sure matched his own.

He dipped back toward her and this time, pushed her beyond the edge, waves of orgasm crashing through her again and again.

They continued for a while, each showing the other the stars, until they were breathless and spent, laying together in a tangle of sweaty limbs. Caroline felt like she would never catch her breath as she curled into Klaus's side on top of the sheets.

.

Klaus was nowhere near sated in his thirst for Caroline, but they were both spent for the time being. He had meant to talk to her about his discussion with Kol, but it had all been lost the moment he'd stepped into the room. She was nestled into his chest, golden locks spread out over his skin. Her body was warm, and flushed from their activities. He noticed a few purpling marks around her collar bone and her hips. They were from him, he realized. He traced the mark of his teeth across her hipbone, an odd small curving around his lips. An acute sense of possessiveness surged in his chest at seeing a physical sign of their time together.

One of her hands curled over his heart and another thought gripped him.

Her touch made him human. In his current state, every beat of his heart counted. Every breath was necessary to survival. Each moment that ticked by was fleeting and fickle in a way he hadn't considered in a millennia.

He tensed, the idea of humanity overwhelming him. He eased himself out from under her as quickly as he could, needing to feel like himself again.

His hybrid nature washed over him as soon as he reached the other side of the bed, the humanity and mortality seeping out like a poison. He turned his head to Caroline, who remained fast asleep. Her face nuzzled into the pillow, a little groan of comfort rumbling in her throat.

He stared at her for a long time, watching her breaths, listening to her heartbeats—counting them-studying the way her body ticked and moved as she slept.

After a while, he moved from the bed, pulling his clothes on again, and left her sleeping in her room.

.

Caroline rolled over and stretched out her arm, feeling her muscles tense and release as she curled her toes. The room was dark, save for the single lamp by the window that was left illuminated. Her ears registered a faint tapping at the door, which she figured must have been what had awoken her.

"Caroline—" she heard Bonnie's voice as the door opened. Caroline shot up, just in time to meet her friend's wide eyes. "Whoa! Naked!"

Bonnie backed out, shutting the door quickly. Caroline heard Kol's voice in the hall, asking to let him take a peek, and then she heard a thump against the door and Kol grumbling.

"Give me a minute," Caroline said, eyes darting around for some clothes to throw on. She scrambled toward her bag, pulling out a t-shirt and shorts, noting that Klaus had completely disappeared on her.

She didn't know if his absence was a good or bad thing. He did have the tendency to get out of bed and wander away in the middle of the night.

Once she was dressed, Caroline opened the door and saw Bonnie, Kol, and Stefan in the hallway.

"Everyone decent?" Bonnie teased.

Caroline rolled her eyes. "It's just me," she replied. "What's going on?"

"It's almost the witching hour," Kol explained, settling onto the bed and making himself comfortable.

"What do you mean?" Caroline asked.

"It means," Kol said. "That while you've been making up with my brother, we've been slaving away to prepare."

Caroline still didn't understand. "Speaking of making up, you might not want to get too comfortable on those sheets," she quipped, laughing when Kol made a disgusted face and jumped off the bed. She turned to Bonnie. "Can you translate?"

"Kol and I found a spell today," Bonnie said. "One that could help you be a vampire again?"

Her breath stopped and her heart started doing cartwheels. "Are you serious?"

Bonnie nodded. "It's called Obligatwa. We basically put a magic stopper over the magic from the potion you drank, so that it doesn't negate the vampire magic. It's complicated, but I think I can do it."

"Are you sure?" Caroline asked. "Not that I doubt your magical awesomeness," she quickly added, "but I don't want you to hurt yourself."

"That's why we're doing it at midnight," Bonnie explained. "The pull of magic will be stronger."

"So, we should get going," Kol urged tipping his head in the direction of the clock.

Caroline traded her sleep shorts for a pair of jeans and slipped into her boots, then snuck out of the mansion with Bonnie, Stefan, and Kol. Not that much sneaking was required. Marcel and all of his vamps seemed to have departed for the night. The four of them were headed out to the cemetery.

Stefan strolled next to Caroline. She could feel that he wanted to say something to her.

"What is it?" Caroline nudged.

His brows flicked up. "Nothing."

"Yes, there is something," Caroline said. "You do this hover thing when you want to say something without saying it."

Stefan chuckled. "You and Klaus made up."

"I'm not sure," Caroline replied, honestly. "Is that okay?"

"You tell me."

She let out a sigh, looking up at the sliver of moon that peaked out of the clouds in the sky. "I'm not sure," she admitted. "With Klaus, you gain an inch, but you still have yet to come close to a mile."

"Sounds about right," Stefan replied.

"Boys suck," Bonnie interjected, throwing an arm around Caroline.

"So do hybrids," she quipped, and then threw a look back to Stefan. "No offense."

He raised his hands. "None taken. I am neither boy nor hybrid," he said, causing the two girls to laugh.

They reached the cemetery, which was creepy and old, just like every other cemetery in existence. The iron gate screeched at them as they entered, sending shivers down Caroline's spine. They passed through the rows of tombstones and mausoleums, a few candles peppered throughout the graves.

"We couldn't do this in say, like an ice cream shop, in the daylight?" Caroline blanched.

Bonnie just laughed as they came to a stop in the center most point of the cemetery.

They came to the center of the cemetery; Bonnie began to spread white candles around the area. Kol and Stefan ran to the perimeter, double-checking that they were alone from vampires and humans alike. Caroline watched Bonnie move around the circle she was creating, lighting the candles with a long matchstick.

"It's to keep any evil spirits away," Bonnie explained. "Kol says a lot of witches light a white candle just as a precaution when they invoke stronger types of magic."

Caroline laughed. "'Kol says…Kol and I…Kol, Kol, Kol. I think someone has a crush."

"I do not," Bonnie argued.

"You've been spending all this time together, studying, close quarters. It's textbook romantic comedy."

"I don't have a crush on Kol," the witch insisted. "He's a good teacher. He's different than I thought he was. But, no," she shook her head, her dark curtain of hair moving back and forth, shimmering in the candlelight. "There's no way."

Caroline giggled again. It sounded like Bonnie was trying to convince herself more than she was trying to convince Caroline. "But he's cute. You have to admit it."

Bonnie stood up from lighting her last candle, joining Caroline in the middle of the circle. "He's…handsome."

"Handsome? What are you, fifty? Who calls anyone handsome anymore?"

"Okay!" Bonnie exclaimed. "Kol's hot."

"You think I'm hot?"

Kol sauntered up behind them, flicking his eyebrows up a Bonnie. Caroline clutched her stomach in laughter as Bonnie turned eight different shades of maroon. She covered her face with one of her hands.

"Did you find any one close by?"

"All alone," Kol leered. "Not that a graveyard is the most romantic of places for a confession of love, but I've been in worse places."

Bonnie quirked an eyebrow. "Oh, so I admit your kinda hot and now I'm in love with you."

"I believe, darling that you said 'hot', no 'kind of' added to it. And in my experience it's a short trip from physical attraction to eternal love."

Caroline watched the two of them banter back and forth. Poor Kol was trying so hard to be dashing, and she thought maybe, that her best friend didn't mind it so much anymore. At least, not in the way she did before they had come to New Orleans.

The candles flickered and Caroline's breath caught in her throat. No sooner had she blinked than a vampire had reached out from behind one of the large tombs, wrapping one arm around Bonnie and the other around her mouth.

Kol flashed forward but stopped on a dime, when the vamp's hand moved to Bonnie's neck.

"Any further and I tear out her throat."

Kol growled, his fingers flexing at his sides, feet ready to pounce on his enemy.

"Let the witch go," Kol warned. "And I will kill you quickly."

The vampire smirked. "Is that so?"

Two more vampires appeared, seizing Kol. Even with his original strength, he wasn't a match for being snuck up on by two full-grown vampires. Caroline darted forward, another vampire appearing and holding her back as well. She grabbed his wrist, swinging it around and snapping his arm back, sending him flying against one of the stone tombs. She whirled, like a ballerina, heading toward the vampire who still had hold of Bonnie.

She had only taken a single step in her friend's direction when she was snapped back, her head whiplashing on her shoulders, as yet another vampire reached out and grabbed her by the arm. She looked down to the hand wrapped around her bicep to see thick leather gloves, trailing her gaze up a tattooed arm, and stopping at the fanged mouth grinning down at her.

"Yeah, we've heard about you," leather gloves taunted.

Caroline gulped, looking over at Kol and Bonnie, watching her friend's eyes squint. In the next second, a searing pain pressed into her brain. Her eyes felt like they were about to pop out of her skull. The vampires surrounding them laughed.

"Yeah," the one holding Bonnie said. "That doesn't work on us."

He gave Bonnie a rough shake and the spell released. Caroline gasped in relief, before Leather Gloves jerked her upright again.

"Snap his neck," the leader said, jerking his chin towards Kol. "Bring him with us."

Bonnie let out a half scream as she watched Kol's neck snap and his body drop to the floor. The vamp hauled him up and dumped him over his shoulders.

"Let's go!"

"What are you doing?" Bonnie yelled. "Where are you taking us?"

"To be executed," he replied. "You, Bonnie Bennett, have committed the crime of practicing witchcraft in the quarter." He leaned down right in front of her face. "An offense punishable by death."

Both Bonnie and Caroline struggled against the vampires' holds but it was no use. "Marcel," Caroline said. "We're his guests."

"Marcel doesn't play favorites," the vampire said. "You break a rule, you pay the price."

Stefan, Caroline thought. Stefan was still out in the graveyard somewhere, assuming the vamps hadn't gotten to him already. He would go find Klaus. Her heart clenched inside her chest. She hoped, though maybe it was a long shot, that Klaus would care just enough to help her and Bonnie escape danger one last time.

.

Klaus walked through the shadows directionless, becoming one with the darkness. The city sounds crooned against the slight breeze as he walked, humidity nipping at the back of his neck. Wisps of clouds passed along the moon, creating shadows that slipped along the darkened streets. He wandered, seeking solitude, seeking to drown his worries and thoughts in bourbon and blood.

Caroline's taste hung on his lips, her moans still singing in his ears, her touch still burned into his skin.

Something shifted in the fog and Klaus sensed a supernatural presence, the hackles on his neck rising. He hoped it was one of Marcel's followers. They were such a pompous lot, fooling themselves that they had any power or authority over him. He wouldn't mind taking one of them down a peg or two.

"If you're looking to die tonight," Klaus called to the shadows. "I'm happy to oblige."

A figure stepped into the streetlight. It was a tall man, with dark hair, wearing a perfectly pressed suit. It had been a while since Klaus had seen him up close.

Klaus pressed his lips together. "Elijah."

Elijah's lip curved ever so slightly, one hand moving into the pocket of his pants. "Hello, Niklaus."

**Obligatwa is a VERY loose translation of Haitian Creole. I came across it while doing a bit of research and thought it sounded cool.

**Hope you smut lovers out there enjoyed a that little bit I threw in! At first I wasn't going to stop them, they were gonna go all out, however so many of you have mentioned the idea of Caroline possibly getting pregnant if they are both human that I knew I couldn't just brush this under the rug. I was tempted to just shrug off and say "they got lucky", but instead chose to be a responsible writer. You guys who know me, know that I don't write pregnancy into my fics, so sorry for those of you who were crossing you fingers about that.

**Next chapter...Elijah and Klaus have some one on one bro time ;)

Thanks to Alex (klarolineepiclove), Miranda (livingdeadblondegirl) , and Kady (klausykins) for the beta action.
