Chapter 20: Hey, This is Ally

"I got a voicemail from someone named Dexter Dawson." Trish said. The smile completely vanished from Ally's face. It looked like all the color was fading from her face. "He said he's your brother." The entire room was quiet, everyone looking at Ally.

Before anyone could say anything, Ally ran from the room and right out the door.

Without hesitation, Austin ran out the door. He wouldn't lose her. She was a good pace ahead, running like her feet were on fire. He could see she had tears streaming down her face. Austin pushed himself to catch up with her. "Ally stop!" He said as he grabbed her arm. In a swift action he broke his stride and pulled her into his arms. She sobbed into his chest. He rubbed his hand up and down her back to help calm her down. Austin took a deep breath, as it finally hit him… Ally has a brother?

Ally slowly stopped crying. Austin could feel her relax in his arms. Austin slowly relaxed his grip so he could look at Ally's eyes. She looked up at him, tears still falling down her cheeks. Austin placed a hand on her cheek, rubbing the tear away with his thumb. "I think we need to talk." Austin said his voice barely above a whisper. Ally closed her eyes and nodded.

. . .

Ally held the cup of coffee the waitress had brought her. Austin suggested before going home they go to the diner to talk first. Austin waited patiently as Ally sipped her coffee. He had so many questions, but reminded himself to let Ally open up to him. Ally sighed as she stared at her coffee. "I don't really know where to start." She said her voice tired and weak.

"Start wherever you need." Austin said, trying to be supportive.

Ally looked up from her coffee, looking at Austin's face like the answers were right in front of him. "Before I came here, I was in Florida. I was walking around an outdoor mall and saw a Sonic Boom." She explained. Austin nodded, remembering when Ally said she had worked at different music stores over time. "I had worked at several different Sonic Boom franchises over the years, so I thought I would see about getting a job there. I remembered someone telling me Sonic Boom started in Florida by a loving couple. I just thought it might be nice." She looked back down at her coffee. "I walked in to the store and I saw them."

She paused, so Austin asked: "Who?"

"My parents." Ally answered her voice hurt. "They were standing behind the counter, smiling at each other." Ally shook herself. "They looked so happy." Ally closed her eyes, remembering their smiles, their laughter. "At first, I wanted to yell at them. Be angry or upset. Tell them I was just fine without them." Ally smiled to herself and shook her head from side to side. "Maybe I just wanted to show them how they ruined my life. But then…" Ally stopped. Her chin falling to her chest.

Austin understood. "Your brother…"

Ally nodded. "There they were… the perfect family…" She reached up and wiped a tear off her cheek. "My dad wrapped him up in a hug…" Ally shook her head and let out a harsh chuckle. "He never hugged me." Ally took another sip of coffee. "And he was happy! My parents… the people who first abandoned me… who neglected me constantly… here they were back together, in love, and with a son."

"That can't be easy to see, Ally." Austin said, not sure what else he could say. What could he say? Ally had been through hell because of these people, and while she was living on the streets, they were building a new family without her. Ally nodded, biting her lip. "What did you say to them?"

Ally looked up. "I didn't say anything." Again, another chuckle left her lips. "I just left. I walked to a local park and realized that they were forming roots, building a family, being happy… and I wasn't."

"That's why you decided to come here." Austin nodded, understanding.

Ally nodded back. "I just wanted to be happy."

Austin reached across the table and grabbed Ally's hand. "And you are now." He rubbed his thumb over her hand. Ally didn't respond at first. "Right?" Austin asked, the concern slipping into his tone.

Ally quickly looked into his eyes, squeezing his hand. "Yes! I'm happier now than I ever have been." Ally said as a weak smile traced her lips. Austin smiled back squeezing her hand. "I never had an interest in seeing my parents after they left. Like, they left and that was it." Ally held tightly onto Austin. "But then…" Ally sighed. "They were right." Her gripped weakened slightly. "I was the reason they were so unhappy."

Austin quickly squeezed Ally's hand. "No, that's not true, Ally!"

Ally shook her head. "But it is, Austin." She looked into his eyes. "Without me, they are successful business owners, happily married, and have a son."

"Ally," Austin squeezed her hand extra tight. "None of that is your fault. That is all on them." Ally smiled weakly and squeezed his hand back. After a moment of quiet, Austin decided to ask the question preying on his mind. "What about your brother?"

Ally raised her eyebrow, the smile fading from her lips. "What about him?"

"He called Trish," Austin said remembering the voicemail. "It looks like he wants to meet you."

Ally let go of Austin's hand and slumped back in the booth. "What if I don't want to meet him?" She asked looking down at the table. Austin sighed.

"Then you don't have to. But…" Austin considered his words before he continued. "He isn't them, Ally." Austin said sitting forward in his seat. "He didn't abandon you."

Ally looked up at Austin looking like she was going to argue, but her chin dropped back down to her chest. "I know you're right." She said her voice gravely. "I just don't know…" Her face dropped into her hands.

"Maybe you should meet him." Austin suggested. Ally didn't respond. "Or start off small." Austin said, reaching out to her. "Trish has his number. You could call him."

"What am I supposed to say to him?" Ally asked.

Austin shrugged. "I don't know, Ally." He sighed. "I really don't know. But, what I do know is you need to talk to him." Ally sighed as well, nodding slowly.

. . .

Everyone was sitting around in silence; shocked by the news that Ally had a brother. "Did you two know Ally had a brother?" Dez asked Cassidy and Kira.

The pair looked at each other for answers before turning back to Dez. "Ally never said anything to us about her family." Kira answered.

"Did you ever think to ask?" Dallas asked, his arms folded over his chest.

Cassidy scowled at him. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Everyone stay calm." Trish said, stopping a fight before it started. The room went back to silence.

Dez once again broke the silence. "What did he say in his voicemail?" He asked Trish.

Trish shrugged. "Just that his name was Dexter Dawson and he thinks Ally is his sister and he wanted to talk to her."

"Why is he calling you?" Kira asked.

"Maybe he saw Ally on Austin's tour and thought to call his manager to get a hold of her?" Trish said, again shrugging her shoulders as she did not have all the answers.

"How do we even know he's legit? He could just be a crazy guy!" Kira asked.

"I don't think Ally would've reacted like that for a random crazy guy." Dez responded. He looked at the door, trying to be patient for Austin and Ally's return.

"How do we know Ally doesn't already know him?" Dallas asked. "For all we know she's been lying about everything. Why else do you think she ran?!"

"Shut the hell up, Dallas!" Cassidy said, getting angry. She stood up as if she was ready to square off with Dallas. Her hands formed into fists. Dallas stood as well, puffing up his chest.

"I said stay calm, guys!" Trish said moving in between the two. Then, before things got any more heated, the front door opened. Everyone's attention turned to the couple standing at the front door. Austin and Ally, holding hands, slowly made their way back inside the house. Cassidy's tough exterior immediately melted as she ran over and embraced Ally in a hug.

"Thanks Cas," Ally whispered into her friend's hair. Soon Cassidy let go of Ally and walked back to her seat next to Kira. Before anyone could say anything else, "Trish, can I borrow your phone?" Ally asked. "I need to make a call." Austin squeezed her hand in support.

"Yeah, sure." Trish said quietly, handing off her phone to Ally.

"Thanks," Ally said grabbing the phone and turning back toward the door. She walked outside, and sat down on the front steps. Austin followed her out and sat next to her. As the front door was still open everyone inside watched and listened as Ally dialed the phone and put it to her ear. Ally took a deep breath before saying: "Hey, this is Ally. I guess we have some stuff to talk about."

What do you think will happen next?!
