Chapter 20: Decisions, decisions

Jace looked around, confused. "How do you know this?" He asked.

Isabelle pulled out a letter and handed it to him. It was a fire message.

Jace Herondale,

I will gladly exchange your parents for my
beloved daughter, the Lightwoods will
also get their son back, safely.
Bring Clarissa with you to the
top of the Empire State building tomorrow at
sunset. If you fail to deliver her then I will get my daughter
on my own and you will never see your parents again.

-Valentine Morgenstern

"What is it?" Clary asked. "What does it say?"

Jace gave her the piece of paper and she read it over.

Clary looked up. Not at Jace but at her mom. She looked like a lost child, asking her mother for some guidance.

Then Jace spoke up. "Clary, you can't…"

"But you'll get your parents back, Jace."

"Clarissa Adele, you aren't going. Who knows what Valentine will do to you?" Isabelle said.

Clary rolled her eyes. "Why would they go through so much just to get me and kill me?"

"They could torture you Clare." Sebastian said.

"Well, I know that Isabelle wants Alec back and I know that Jace needs his parents back. I'm fine with it. I've killed many demons before, I can handle myself!" Then she turned and walked away.

Jace sighed. "How stubborn can she get?" He asked no one in particular.

"You should go talk to her." Isabelle said.

"She'll probably listen to you." Sebastian added.

"You really think so?"

"Yes." Responded Jocelyn.

With that, Jace followed where Clary went.

He knocked on her door. "Clary?" He knocked again. There wasn't a response. Jace opened the door. There was no one there. He stayed calm and thought of where she could be. The Greenhouse.

Clary was sitting by one of the many windows that where from the ceiling to the ground, she was hidden by all the Medianox flowers.

I want to help Jace and Isabelle get their family back… By the Angel why won't they let me?

She heard the door open then slam shut. Clary knew who it was without having to look. Jace.

Suddenly there was someone sitting beside her.

"Clary…" He sighed.

"I just want to help you guys."

"We'll find a way to get my parents and Alec back without you having to leave." Jace said. He put an arm out to comfort her.

"It doesn't matter… My father will find a way to get me."

"Why does he want just you and not your mom?"

"Because of my gifts…"

"Do you mind if I ask about your brother?" Jace said hesitantly.

"Not at all. What do you want to know?"

"Why didn't you want to talk about him to me when I first got here?" Jace asked.

"Well, when I was six and Jonathan was eight, we decided that we had to leave our father. Our mother came along with us because she was the one who told us we had to go. She never told us why at the time.

"We got split up since Valentine sent demons after us. I was with Jon and our mother got separated from us. But Jocelyn told us to run and not look back so that's what we did. Then a demon got Jon and I tried to help but Jon just said to me 'Clarissa, run. Run and don't look back. If you stay I will never forgive you!' I couldn't handle him never talking to me again so I did what he told me to do. I ran. I got to Alicante. My mom told us that if we ever got lost we should look for the Lightwoods and that's what I did.

"I told Maryse and Robert everything about Jon, mom and Valentine." There were tears in Clary's eyes. "I just wish that I stayed for my brother. I kept wishing that he had actually escaped and he was just taking his time to find me. I slowly lost hope and accepted that Valentine had him. I made a vow one night, I promised myself that, once I can, I would go after Valentine, find my brother and together we'll kill the man who called himself our father."

Jace put an arm around Clary and pulled her in.

"There's something else you should know about Jonathan. He's part demon… Valentine put demon blood in my mother's food while she was pregnant with him. He didn't put much only a little since it really wasn't helping my mother."

"Your brother is part demon? And your father caused that? And you still want to agree to Valentine's conditions?"

"Jace, I could probably help Jonathan."

"How?" Jace insisted. "Valentine raised him, right? How can a boy raised by... a devil be anything but a demon?"

"Because I have more angel blood in me than any other normal Shadowhunter. And I think that you do, too."

"Me? What? How?" Jace asked, not believing he could have extra angel blood.

"That star shaped mark, on your left shoulder. I have the same." Clary pulled her sleeve down to reveal a birthmark similar to Jace's.

"But… this is a chicken pox scar." He said. He sounded as if he was doubting himself.

"Could a chicken pox scar be a perfect star?"

Jace sighed. "I still don't want you to go, Clary."

"By the Angel, Jace. I can handle myself. You know it, I know it. Everyone knows it and yet your all babying me." She began to walk away. Again.

Jace stood up after her.

"Clary!" Jace called out. "It's because we care about you!"

Then the door banged shut.

Clary knew where she had to go and what she has to do. She wasn't going to let anyone, not even Jace, stop her.

So, will Clary be stubborn and do what Valentine says?

Any suggestions are welcome.
