Epilogue
Derek walked out of his apartment complex, and stepped into his car. Not a day went by that he didn't think about what happened that day. To say that it was traumatic was an understatement. At graduation, only 50 students walked across the stage. The other 120 were killed at the pep rally, and several didn't make it out of surgery. He will never forget the look on Will's face, he was scared and over drawn with grief. Did he want Will to live? In fact, he did. But, he also knew that Will wouldn't have been able to live with the quilt.
He put the key in the ignition and left the complex. This was a ritual every month. He skipped out on college, and decided to make it on his own, but he was empty. There was a piece of him that was lost that day, whether it be Will, or the other friends and family he lost that day. Vivid memories of walking through Chamberlain after the pep rally still haunt him. Not only was the school gone, but most of the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
The drive from Boston to Maine wasn't a long one. Since that day, Chamberlain had died. Driving through the remnants of the once flourishing town was depressing. In his mind, he knew what Will was going to do. He needed to right the wrong. Him sacrificing himself to let Chamberlain lay to rest was his goal.
Derek reached the remains of Ewen. Not much was left, only one real wall still stood, as the rest had burned or blew up in the final moments of Will's life. He liked to visit, and look at things. He walked through what was the front doors. Half melted lockers and debris was scattered on the burned linoleum. Something caught his eye though. A sort of shiny object protruding from a pile of hard ash. He walked over.
"Memorial plaque?" He asked as he lifted the half destroyed plaque. Most of the wood was burned, and the gold was beginning to melt. He flipped it over. There were scratch marks on the back, almost like someone had carved it with a knife. He wiped away the soot with his jacket sleeve.
"I'm sorry," Derek read aloud. He dropped the plaque, creating a cloud of dust.
"Excuse me, young man," An elderly man said, tapping Derek's shoulder.
"Er- Yes?" Derek responded.
"You're not supposed to be here," The man said to him.
"I'm sorry, I was just paying my respects," Derek said.
"This is a dangerous place to be, I wouldn't want you getting hurt," The man said to him.
"Thank you, I'll go," Derek said, walking away.
As Derek walked to his car, he felt a cold breeze flow through him.
Look.
He looked up, only to see Will, and a girl with wiry blonde hair standing a distance away from him. Derek was frozen.
"Thank you, Will."
The two faded away, leaving behind a cloud of ash. Derek got back into his car. He sat in the driver's seat for a few moments. He then put the keys back in the ignition and drove away.
