THOMAS POV

Everybody had settled into our new home in Vermont very well. I had taken a job at a up and coming law firm as a lawyer in the city. Constance and Matthew enrolled in a small high school along, while Min and Bo interned at newspaper factories.

Jennifer spent most of her daytime hours at elementary schools as a teacher in training. At first, she was apprehensive to try, because of her race, even though now, she could pass as a dark Latina.

But as soon as she saw the hustle and bustle of the north, and how many free blacks there were, she immediately changed her mind. Usually, we were all home by five. At around this time, I would secretly make sure all the doors were properly locked and boarded up.

When we came here a couple months ago, I hadn't expected to smell them in the area. We were all running through the woods when the scent hit me strongly. The scent was a mixture of decay and must. And I knew immediately. Werewolf; or as our kind call them, Children of the Moon.

I had only seen one in my entire existence, and I was lucky that it didn't see me. These werewolves were savages; they didn't think before they acted, and they had no human consciousness, just animal instincts. I thought back over a century ago to the time that I saw it….

I can't believe I have to leave again! Why won't Margaret just leave me alone, can't she see that I don't want to be with her?

I sighed as I walked through thick trees and underbrush and scented the air. It smelled like it was going to rain again. I cursed Margaret a hundred different ways. This was the third time that she had uprooted me from a very comfortable living. I could actually go out in the daylight.

And now here I am, in the dead of the night, searching for a new place to settle in.

That's when the scent brushed against my face. I sniffed hard, and recoiled. The air still smelled like air, but now it was tainted with rotting flesh; like something was decomposing. The air also smelled like some kind of animal, but not the kind I would feed off of.

It wasn't unusual to come across a dead animal carcass, but this scent sent chills down my spine, and my instincts were telling me to be alert.

I quickly climbed the nearest tree, and quietly as possible, I flung to the next and next, until I could see where this scent was coming from. I came to a clearing in the forest and stopped my movements so that the branches could provide some coverage for me.

I expected to see some dead animal and to scoff at myself for being overly anxious, but what I saw stopped my breathing altogether.

The animal….or was it a man, was standing almost upright on its hind legs. The beast was huge; maybe fifteen or sixteen feet tall. The arms were not connected to paws, but actual hands. This beast had a thumb, and I didn't want to find out why.

His fur was a shockingly pale white, almost as white as my hard skin. The beast was monkey like in its posture, and I wondered if this tree would really keep me safe. The eyes were looking up at the sky, and I followed his gaze. This beast was looking a full moon.

I almost gasped. Before I was a vampire, I didn't believe they were real….But if we were, than werewolves were too; and this was certainly a werewolf.

I still couldn't understand why this beast could smell so wrong; that was before I saw his teeth. His canines were easily five inches long, if not longer, and the rest of his teeth were almost as long. But that's not what took me off guard.

In his teeth were hordes and pieces of rotting flesh from his victims. Mold and maggots were flourishing in his teeth and gums. I almost gagged. I had only been a vampire for a decade; if I fought this thing, it would only be a decade.

As soon as the wind picked up, I leapt from tree to tree as far as I could away from the scent. Hopefully, I would never come across another…

I growled in my study as I snapped back to the present. The family was playing some another obsessive round on scrabble. I heard footsteps on the staircase and then outside my door. Three hushed knocks followed before my goddess let herself in.

I gasped. Sometimes I forgot how beautiful she was; even when she was giving me a questioning look. "It's nothing," I lied.

She rolled her eyes at me and whispered, "Liar…" I got up and walked over to the giant sofa in front of the fireplace, and pulled Jennifer along to sit with me. I nuzzled my face in her neck, and we just sat there for a while, listening to the laughter of our family downstairs.

"You can tell me anything," Jennifer said. When I didn't say anything, she added, "Or…I could do circle magic with the girls and find out…" She finished with a smile I knew would be on her face.

I slowly lifted my face from her face, "I can't hide anything from you, can I?" I asked teasingly, returning the dazzling smile she was giving me. "Stop trying to distract me," She said, looking very distracted.

I told her everything, not because I wanted this off my chest, but because I couldn't stand having secrets with Jennifer.

She looked shocked at my revelation. "We should tell the others," Jennifer said. "We all need to be extra careful now. And for now on, I think that we should all go hunting together instead of pairs…" She trailed off, deep in thought.

I kissed her while she was distracted, and as usual, I lost all consciousness. I led with my body. We only stopped when a low moan escaped my throat. "Marry me?" I asked breathlessly.

She stared at me speechlessly. And as usual, Min with her bad timing, burst through the door, and said, "Jennifer, you said that you would be right back!" Jennifer reluctantly tore her eyes from my face and to my pleasure, unwillingly disentangled our bodies, and said, "Coming."

"You didn't answer my question," I said to her retreating back. "Min, give us a minute," I said to the annoyingly punctual Min, who sighed in obvious irritation.

She sulked out of the room, cursing at me in Chinese, when she thought I couldn't hear. I mentally rolled my eyes. "Do you love me?" I asked Jennifer, when I was sure Min was gone.

"You know that I do," She answered. "It's just…" She trailed off again.

"Jennifer, I would never hurt you." I began with conviction. I wanted her to know that she was everything to me now. That she was my light in this dark world. She made me feel whole when she was with me, and lost, when she was away; even just for a few minutes.

"I love you so much, because you make me want to be better. You understand my past, even though you don't agree with it, you believe that I am worthy to do anything that I want for future, even when my thoughts for the future are hypothetical, and you accept me for who I am. That's more than I deserve for all the things that I have done in both my human and vampire life. You're the very best part of me, and I don't want life without you." I said.

I noticed that downstairs was unusually quiet, except for Constance remark to Matthew to, "Take notes."

Jennifer was looking at me speechlessly again. "You just have to say yes," I reminded her, with a trace of a smile on my lips. "Will you marry me, Jennifer?" I said, as I got on one knee. I cursed myself for not making a trip to the stolen stash of jewelry I took from my human family.

"Yes." Jennifer finally said after a long wait. I stood and crushed my mouth to hers.

MATTHEW POV

Thomas sure knew how to propose to a woman. Min and Connie, were giving us boys the look. And we were suddenly interested with the scrabble board. "We should probably give them some privacy," Bo said, looking uncomfortable at the kissing noises that were going on upstairs.

The girls got up first and went into the woods. "Should we play a game to pass some time?" Min asked brushing the bangs out of her eyes.

"Tag." I tapped at her and ran deep into the woods. It was a childish game, but then again, I had never played it while being a vampire.

Connie was holding my hand and running with me, as we left Min behind who kept repeating, "No fair!" And occasionally speaking Chinese; and when Bo laughed at what she said, I assumed she was cursing at us. We ran until it was dark

We stopped playing soon, and began to hunt. That's when this scent came across our direction. We all stopped. This wasn't the first time we scented this. We all smelled it, when we were going to our new house, but we pretended not to notice, even though Thomas was unusually stiff and wary.

It smelled like something had been dead a long while, but the smell wasn't what raised the hairs on my neck. It was the despair that I felt in the area.

There was a deep menacing growl to the side of us. We all turned to stare, when it came out of the underbrush.

We all crouched and growled back at it. I pushed Constance behind me. The beast was at least ten feet tall. It had black fur, and bright blue eyes. The body was almost ape like. It stood on its hind legs, and the paws were like human hand.

"What is this?" I thought to myself. It was about to pounce on us, when a little girls voice said, "Pain."

The beast immediately started doing body rolls on the floor.

We all look to the sound of the voice, when we saw the little girl, with a V pendant around her neck. She wasn't alone.
