Blossomfall woke to low voices on the opposite end of the nursery.
"Why'd you call me in here?" Blossomfall recognized the voice of Cloudtail. She peeked one yellow eye open and stared at the fluffy white form.
He sat down, swishing his tail across the mossy floor.
"I have to ask you something," Daisy meowed quietly, "Blossomfall got Foxleap's help raising her kits, and I was wondering if you'd help me raise Ravenkit and Spiderkit?"
Cloudtail leapt back, "I have a mate! And she's amazing, by the way."
"I'm not asking you to be my mate," Daisy whispered urgently, "I just want you to play with Ravenkit and Spiderkit when I'm busy, or, you know, teach them the hunting crouch, some battle moves. Something like that."
Cloudtail stepped forward and sat down again, "I-I can't. I love Brightheart."
"Wouldn't she approve of you helping out some kits?" the cream queen suggested, smiling.
"That manipulative little cat!" Blossomfall hissed almost silently, "To think I had felt sorry for her yesterday."
"I- I suppose…"
No, Cloudtail! Brightheart will be so unhappy, Blossomfall thought in her head.
"Okay, fine. But we aren't mates," he meowed, defeated.
"Great!" Daisy meowed, waking Spiderkit. He meowed and Daisy stroked him with her tail to calm him.
"I have to tell Brightheart, though," he meowed, "Bye Daisy."
The cat trotted out of the den, waking Smokekit.
"Morning!" she mewed, stretching out luxuriously, "I'm hungry."
Approaching pawsteps. Brightheart's scent.
"Go find Foxleap and he'll give you some prey!" she meowed, "Wake your siblings."
The other four kits leapt up a soon as Smokekit prodded Stormkit.
"That works too," Blossomfall meowed.
"Let's go get food with daddy!" Smokekit exclaimed. The other kits nodded and yawned, scampering out of the den.
"Blossomfall?" Brightheart meowed, "Can I talk with you?"
"Of course," she meowed, stepping outside of the nursery. The two she-cats retreated to the edge of camp.
"Well, I know you're about, half my age, but… I need some advice. I don't know if you heard, but Daisy asked Cloudtail to help raise her kits. Like you asked Foxleap, but you didn't have an existing mate so it's not wrong," she meowed, "Cloudtail accepted and I don't know if I should let him or tell him no, especially since Spiderleg is dead and Daisy has always had an interest in Cloudtail."
"Uh," Blossomfall started, "Well, I heard the whole conversation. Cloudtail was very unsure about agreeing and said no at first. He said that he already had a mate. In the end he agreed only to play with them and teach them some things, like the hunting crouch and battle moves."
"Oh," Brightheart meowed, her blind side turned to Blossomfall, "I see. I guess I shouldn't be too worried, then, huh?"
Blossomfall smiled, "Cloudtail is loyal to you. If I hear anything suspicious I'll let you know."
"Thanks, Blossomfall," Brightheart meowed, "I owe you one."
"No problem," the tortoiseshell she-cat meowed, looking around camp. Sighting a certain silver tabby, she meowed to her companion, "Millie alert. You better go."
Brightheart nodded and trotted off.
"Well, you've upgraded to asking older cats for advice? Why don't you just ask me?" Millie batted her eyelashes, smirking distinctly, "I am your mother, after all."
What is this cat's problem? Blossomfall screeched in her head, and then replied, "Then start acting like one. And, I didn't ask Brightheart for help, she asked me."
She stalked away, tail lashing angrily. She settled down beside Foxleap, who was telling a story to 'his' kits. The carcass of a mouse sat in front of the group.
She leaned into her mate and listened to the end of his story.
"Bramblestar!" Brackenfur called out from the camp entrance. Whitewing, Toadstep and Cinderheart all surrounded two cats, not smelling of any Clan, nor Twolegs. Loners.
"What exactly do these cats think that they're doing?" Brambelstar stepped over to the patrol, hackles raised.
"Hello, Bramblestar," a ginger tabby meowed confidently, "I am Pancake, this is my sister Lola. And we wish to join your Clan."
"Join my Clan?" Bramblestar snorted, "Right. What Clan are you spying for?"
"No Clan, sir," Lola mewed, "We just are loners looking for a place to fit in."
Squirrelflight whispered something in her mate's ear. He stepped back, "You don't smell of any Clans."
"Correct, we do not," Pancake stated.
"You just expect me to take you in just like that?" Bramblestar let his hackles fall, "Do you need ThunderClan? Or want it?"
"We freeze during the night, we barely catch any food and our brother, who was the only cat that could fight, was just killed by some other cats not too far from here," Lola meowed.
"ShadowClan, I presume," Bramblestar rolled his amber eyes, "Well, if Clan cats have already killed your brother, why do you want to join ThunderClan?"
"Well, the cat that killed my – our – brother, said that if we wanted help we ought to just go to ThunderClan," Pancake glanced at Lola.
"You have a quarter moon trial period," Bramblestar growled, "And then we'll decide if you can stay or not. You will be apprenticed at moonhigh. Icecloud, Brackenfur, watch these two."
