Kept Promises
.

.
After one of the best moments in his life. Chris simply forgot where he was and let his body rest for a few minutes. Jill remained with him half asleep and Chris could feel her gentle hands massaging his legs, back and arms. The fatigue of the day, the love moment and the nice massage left Chris even sleepier.
"Relax." Jill whispered in his ear.
At that moment nothing else mattered to him. She was his.
After a short nap Chris was woken by a loud noise, like a thunder and a flash. Still confused he tried to reach out his sword to pick it up and realized that his hands were tied. He didn't understand what had happened, because he was bound and mainly because he could see a gap between the rocks that was not there before.
"Jill? 'm stuck. Help me."
Jill was standing near the gap and she was holding the book in her hands. Despite the dim light, Chris noticed something dark in her feature.
"Do you really think I will lose the chance to fulfill the mission for my father, Chris? His honor is at stake." She said ironically" If you want to save your brother, you will have to do it yourself. "
Chris looked at her surprised and worried.
"Why Jill?"
"Because my people are always my priority. I told you that you did not know me..."
Some noises from the rocks caught Jill's attention and she turned and left without looking back. A few seconds after the rock moved blocking the entrance again. Leaving behind a bewildered and angry Chris.

Guided by the moonlight, Jill walked quickly. Looking at the clear sky it would be hard to believe in the spectacle of lightning that occurred for sometime in the cave. One of the rays hit the rock magnetizing it and transforming it into a magnet, thus attracting the middle rock and unblocking the way. The discharge outside was only strong enough to give Jill sometime to leave. Shortly after it happened the rock rolled back into its place, blocking the entrance again. It seemed to her the same would happen at any time during the day, releasing Chris. Jill wished she were already away at that time.
Jill moved on without looking back, with steady and seemingly cold attitude, but her eyes betrayed the bitterness she felt.
Jill could easily lie and deceive someone if she need to, after all she was Dick Valentine's daughter, but in her heart there was a greater inheritance from her mother and this meant that Jill had a need to be honest, especially when it came to the man she loved.
Once she realized that Chris was sleepy and vulnerable she allowed Dick to speak up within her so that she could act with cunning and quickly.
It didn't take her long to think what to do and how to do so he would not notice.
But the hardest time was to lie to Chris. She let him think that Jill had betrayed him. She considered the possibility of telling him the truth, but she knew he would only discuss and try to convince her that he should go. On the other hand the betrayal left him speechless and Jill also believed that the feeling of hatred, the desire for revenge and the need to save Piers would be great enhancers of his survival instinct. And that was all that mattered to her, his life.
Jill walked for over an hour when she saw some movement ahead.
When approaching she realized that the trees swayed around her and began to hear screams and whispers. Voices called her and she felt light headed. Suddenly Jill spotted Keith in front of her, stuck in a tree by his feet.
"Jill, help me!" he yelled trying to extricate himself from the rope.
Jill took two steps forward and stopped. Hesitantly she began observing everything around her. Keith was incredibly real, but the sense of it said that something was different. She knew that images could be easily stolen from her mind.
That seemed an incredibly real environment. Anyone who had not the gift to see beyond the matter would be easily fooled by this illusion. But Jill managed to see shadows blur the image of Keith.
When some creatures like wolves approached Keith looking starving, making him cry out desperately, Jill almost succumbed and ran towards him to help. The cries would be able to make anyone crazy. Jill needed a lot of strength to go on ignoring that distressing illusion.
Jill walked for a long time without looking back. She could only do it when she stopped listening to the screams. To her relief there was nothing behind, confirming that it had all been an illusion.
At that moment, feeling still disturbed she understood that even with her sight she had almost failed that test and that Chris would probably not resist the image of his brother in danger. The same could have happened to Leon and Keith. That was where she would lose the last fireflies.
Walking through uninterrupted hours, thanks to the full moon light, Jill feared that more surprises awaited her in the way. Fortunately nothing happened.
The way back seemed shorter and different. Jill stopped to rest a few minutes and sometime after dawn she could finally see the beach.
After reaching the beach sand and feeling the hot sun on her head, she felt dizzy and fell down. She could see Wesker's ship and some people away, but Jill unsuccessfully tried to scream. She was too weak.
Lying on the book, Jill struggled to stay awake and tried to drag herself up but she fainted.

"Is she alive?"
"Sure she is, you idiot. Be quiet, the governor is coming."
Jill opened her eyes and saw some men around her, looking at her intently. She tried to get up but she could not. She still had blurred vision.
"Let me get the book."
Although confused, she could recognize Wesker in front of her and she did as he commanded.
"Piers ..."
Wesker was already walking away, but he turned back and he approached her again.
"What did you say?"
"There's the book ... Release Piers."
"I wanted to kill his brother ... As I could not, I might make Piers my slave..."
"Do not ... Please ..." she coughed before continuing " you gave me your word, release the boy..."
Wesker chuckled before walking out.
"She's dehydrated, take care of her." Wesker walked away without looking back and spoke to himself loud enough to allow his soldiers to listen to. " As for the boy, she asked to release him, but she did not say where."
Deborah was holding Piers' hand as she stared intently at the soldiers. She did not understand why they ordered the boy to walk to the beach, but she feared for him. Fortunately the soldiers let her go with Piers.
Her fear increased when Wesker appeared walking towards them with other soldiers. The governor walked quickly and soon placed himself in front of them. After a motion, one of the guards grabbed Deborah by the arm, pushing her away from Piers.
"Please. Do not hurt him. "
"Stay calm girl. I just came to say I got the book that his brother would bring me..."
"My brother is back? How is he?" Piers had his eyes wide open.
"He's not returned. It seems the jungle was not so gentle to him..." Wesker smirked.
"No!" Piers threw himself on his knees and Deborah tried to walk up to him without success.
"But I have good news. "Wesker was still smirking "As I am a man of words I will release you."
"It doesn't matter anymore." Piers clenched his jaw.
"Piers. I'm sorry." Deborah cried after seeing the boy so devastated "Everything will be fine. I'm sure your brother wants you to come home safely and he wants to see you happy. "
"But who said that he will return home?" Wesker looked at the girl over his shoulder. "I promised to free him, not to carry and feed this bastard for free."
After a motion from Wesker, one of the guards struck Piers in the stomach, leaving him moaning on the floor while two others dragged Deborah through the sand back to the boat. The girl kicked and cried desperately.
Wesker walked forward totally indifferent to the pleas from the girl.
