"If I can't leave, then you need too."
Her words kept echoing in Callie's head. She knew that she was going to reveal too much at one time, but also knew that Arizona needed to hear it. Callie was tired of pretending, acting like she really wasn't in love with the blonde and was just her friend. She was physically and emotionally tired of all the crap they have been through. Callie closed her eyes and got up from the couch, only taking a few steps towards the kitchen. She spun around on the balls of feet and snapped her eyes open, fury taking over every inch of her body.
"Wait a minute, I said you couldn't leave because I need you to you talk to me. Which means I'M not going anywhere, whether you like it or not. I'm here. I've always been right freaking here. This is what you do, every time, you tell me that you need me and then the next you push me out the door." Her face was beat red, and eyes were an icy black. She pushed the fallen strands of hair behind her ears and continued, "I ended it, and almost lost you forever.. And with one simple phone call I got you back somehow. The man you thought you were married to, is me. The memories you have with him are the ones we made, together.. I will be damned if I lose you again over something like this. I will wait.. I will wait every day and every night until you come back to me. I will spend the rest of my life convincing you how much I love you, and how much we belong together." Her entire heart was spilling out with each word that fell from plump lips. Callie was determined now to get the old Arizona back, and by the look in sapphire eyes it might actually be working. She took two steps closer to the blonde, "I, Calliope Torres, love you, Arizona Robbins."
Arizona's heart was thumping loudly in her chest as she watched the Latina rant on. She had never felt this broken but so wanted by one person. She really didn't want to make eye contact, but Callie's voice at some point cracked and made blue eyes yearn for brown ones. Once she saw the vein in Callie's neck stick out, her hands started to clam up. And when Callie stepped closer to Arizona, her breathe got caught in the back of her throat. She was on the brink of tears, but didn't want Callie to see her falling for her words. Hearing Callie say her name followed by I love you, made her heart soar and she couldn't help but become angry at herself. She had an amazing woman telling her she wanted to spend the rest of their life together, the life they had already planned to live together, but all Arizona could think about was how everyone would think about her if they found out. In her head she had many male nurses in her bed at one point, and a husband, but now? Now, she was told that she was supposedly in love with a woman, was on her way to marry this woman, again, and had an entire past she couldn't remember. But there was still one thing Callie wasn't telling her.
"Who were you talking to on the phone?" Her voice was shaking, but clear enough to make Callie's heart skip a beat.
"Wha.. What?" She asked trying to play it off, while she thought of an answer.
"The phone call. Who were you talking to? Who's your Princess?" Suddenly her eyes went wide, and her stomach dropped. "Oh…"
Callie scrunched up her eye brows, trying to read the blonde sitting in front of her. She saw her face drop and suddenly become very pale. "Arizona? Are you okay?" Callie heard the 'Oh' escape pink lips, but wasn't sure why it did. "Arizona answer me.." She came a step closer to Arizona, before the blonde held out of hand stopping Callie from coming any further.
Arizona dropped her hand, and kept her eyes on the wall in front of her. Her blood was boiling as it raced through her veins. Callie told her that they were almost divorced, but she never said why, then it hit her. "It was her wasn't it."
Callie's heart practically exploded in her chest, as a gasp fell out. "Her who?" She needed to make sure who Arizona was talking about. She didn't want to get her hopes up to high, but that was failing quickly.
Arizona waved her hand in the air, and shook her head. Shutting her eyes tightly trying to get rid of the image that was being created in her confused mind. "The woman you left me for?" She didn't lift her head to look at Callie, but she could feel the awkwardness in the air.
Callie was taken aback by Arizona's accusation, and then figured out why she thought that. "I didn't leave you for anyone, Arizona. Did Carter leave you for another woman?" It couldn't hurt to ask, but she needed to understand why she thought that. She needed to know how much was going to affect her relationship with the blonde, because of her dream while in the coma.
The blonde bowed her head in defeat, and Callie could see the hurt spread across her face. She didn't know what hurt more, seeing Arizona sad about it now or the fact that's what she dreamed about. Callie leaving her really did take a toll on the poor woman, and at this moment Callie wished the old Arizona was back so she could reassure her otherwise. All she wanted to do was wrap her arms around the small frame, forcing Arizona to break down and talk to her, to tell her how she was really feeling. Instead, she had to stand there at arm's length and watch her wife shove down all the heart breaking feelings as far down as they would go.
Arizona took her arm out of the sling and laid it on the coffee table, then picked up her cane and stood up to face Callie. "Can you take me to bed?.. I mean to my bed.."
Callie nodded her head, relieved she didn't have to bring up Sofia just yet, and helped Arizona up the stairs. She decided to let Arizona have their bedroom, hoping that something would spark her memory. Callie opened the door and let Arizona walk in first. She shuffled over to the dresser and pulled out a t-shirt and boxer shorts for Arizona to wear to bed. Laying them on the bed gently, she looked up and saw the blonde scanning the room and finally landing on the bed. Callie could see the tiredness engraving itself on the blonde's face, dark circles beginning to form under blue eyes. She could also see fear seeping through the cracks, Arizona was scared to sleep alone here. Callie went to Arizona's side and took her hand, whether she liked it or not, "I never left you for another woman…" Her voice was almost a whisper, "I'm right down the hall if you need anything." She went to lean in and kiss the soft flushed cheek, but stopped herself knowing how much damage has already been done.
Arizona bit her bottom lip, and took in a deep breath. She could feel Callie begin to walk away from her, but quickly flipped their hands so that she was now gripping Callie's wrist. She could feel the nightmares already coming on, the room was getting extremely warm and her body was beginning to tense up. She needed someone there to keep her safe, but didn't have the guts to ask Callie to stay. As much resentment she had towards Callie, she had this feeling of always needing her, and a growing desire of wanting the Latina. Some feelings were just too strong for her to completely let her walls down and give in, like tonight her pride would get in the way.
Callie stood there, back towards Arizona, waiting for her to say something. Anything. But she didn't, she just released her hand and turned farther away from Callie. The door came closer than she anticipated, it took her a couple seconds before swallowing her love and walking out. It sounded pathetic but she really was leaving all of her love for Arizona in the room behind her. That was their moment, but Arizona chose not to ride with it. She closed the door with one hand, and set the other on the door frame to help shut it quietly. Callie walked down the hall, not to the guest room, but to Sofia's. She placed her hand on the door knob and turned it slowly, knowing this was an awful idea.
The light was off, but the purple unicorn nightlight was glowing in the corner of the room. All of her stuff really was gone, except for a few things. Callie sat on her little bed and reached under the bed, hoping something was missed. Luckily, Sofia forgot to grab a teddy bear, which quickly became Callie's favorite thing the house. She raised it up to her nose and inhaled. The scent of her daughter still lingered off the bear, and it made her smile. Deciding it probably wouldn't hurt if she slept with it for the time being, Callie tucked it under her arm and locked the door behind her. Quietly she crept passed Arizona's room, feeling guilty all of a sudden. Callie knew she would be the reason for Arizona's bad dreams tonight. The brunette stopped right in front of Arizona's door and listened. Her heart now completely in shreds, as heavy sobs lurked their way underneath the door. Even a few sad moans were heard through the door, making tears gather at the corner of Callie's dark eyes. She set her hand on the door knob and turned it, startling the blonde who was sitting on the edge of her side of the bed.
Relief spread across the blonde's face seeing Callie standing there again. Her pride had been ripped away the moment Callie walked out of the room, and all of her insecurities started to pour out of her in one fowl move. She almost fell onto the floor because they came so fast. Why did this woman have so much hold over her? Arizona gave in a little and motioned Callie to lay in bed with her. Without a second thought Callie did so, placing the bear on floor next to the bed before getting in.
They both laid in the bed facing up towards the ceiling, very awkwardly. "Umm, should we get under the covers? Just in case you fall asleep?" Callie asked.
"Oh yeah, umm.. Probably." Arizona answered getting up and helping Callie pull down the covers.
Callie noticed that Arizona had chosen her own side of the bed to sleep on, and knew that the top pillows weren't used for sleeping on. She didn't make a big deal out of it, but it was duly noted. They slid back into the bed and pulled the sheets up just below their breasts, tucking the rest under their arms. Callie's elbow brushed lightly against Arizona's forearm, causing the blonde's breath to hitch.
Arizona swallowed hard, and figured now was the best time to get this off her chest.
"Callie? I need to tell you something..." Arizona said still looking up at the ceiling.
Callie turned her head facing Arizona, "Mhm..."
Arizona started fiddling with her fingers, and adjusted her right leg so that it was bent up in the sheets. "I have ... I have these feelings, for you." She could feel the heat coming from the Latina's eyes, "Feelings of wanting you, needing you, loving you... and I think they're for you, I want to believe that's why I feel like this. But I can't..." Arizona closed her eyes searching for the right words, "I can't connect you to any of them. I don't have the memories you do. I have different ones, and I know you told me that they aren't really there but I have nothing else to go off of. I can't pretend just for you that I do…" Her voice became smaller. "I want to be the person you want me to be, but I just… can't."
Callie slowly shifted her attention back up to the white ceiling, and sighed. She did think that if she told Arizona everything it would bring her back and when it didn't, she almost lost it. But this is what they needed, this moment right here. Even though she just basically told Callie she couldn't love her, it was what she wanted to hear. "I'm sorry if I pushed you too far tonight. I do want you back, but I understand now why this is difficult. So, I won't push you any farther unless you want it…"
Callie's words sunk deep into Arizona's heart and stirred for a bit, before she answered. "Callie?"
"Arizona?"
The blonde put her leg back down and huffed, "I don't want to be this way anymore, you know? Tired all the time… and I know that's how you feel. I don't want you to be tired anymore Calliope…"
It always caught Callie's attention when she used her full name, every freaking time, and she loved it. Especially now. "We're going to be okay. You, are going to be okay. For now… we live with what we are given and go from there. And if your memory comes back, then we begin to go from there. And if it doesn't…" Callie's voice fell short.
"I'm glad you came back tonight…" Arizona cut in when Callie couldn't finish.
Callie restrained her hands by intertwining her fingers together, before she went back on her word to Arizona. Baby steps, she thought, baby steps. But Arizona was so alluring she couldn't help but turn her head to look at her wife, and when she did she was met with sparkling ocean blue ones. The feeling was mutual, but neither women did anything, they just laid there in the faint glow of the night that made it through their curtains and smiled at each other, until one of them fell asleep first.
I absolutely love reading all your comments about how you think the story should play out. It really does make my day (: I know how Arizona will get her memory back and I think you all will be very happy (: If you don't trust Shonda Rhimes' Journey then please trust mine!
