Prompt: Kat finds out that Calvin was taken away.
Kat's Age: 14
Olivia stared down at the picture in her hands. The picture was taken just the past weekend when the three of them went out for bowling. In the picture was herself, Kat and Calvin smiling happily at the camera. One of Olivia's hands flew to cover her mouth before the sob escaped from her lips.
The detective squeezed her eyes shut as her body shook because of her quiet sobs. She can still hear Calvin calling out her name as Vivian took him away with Child Services. She will never forget when he clung to her as his mother tried to pry him off of the detective. She wasn't sure if she will ever see him again.
Liv opened her eyes and wiped the tears away as she looked down at the picture again. She was going to miss him dearly. He was like a son to her and a brother to Kat.
Kat.
Olivia leaned forward, rested her elbows on her knees, and rested her head on her hands. How will she break the news to her daughter? She knew that her daughter will be very sadden by the news of Calvin sent to live with his grandparents but just how devastated will Kat be?
She was deep in thought when she noticed something was poking out from under the bed. She reached down to grab it and let out a short laugh when she saw what it was. It was one of Calvin's plastic snakes. She has almost forgotten that he and Kat had prank her again this morning.
The detective heard the locks from the front door been unlock, indicating that her daughter had arrived home. Olivia heard Kat talking and guessed that she was talking on the phone. Liv quickly wiped the tears that were still falling down her cheeks and put the picture and the plastic snake in one of the drawers in the nightstand. She stood up from her bed and walked out of her room.
"—and then he tripped in front of her. Funniest thing I saw today. Hold on for a sec…Mom, I'm home!"
Kat threw her backpack on the kitchen floor, as always, and opened the fridge as she continued to talk to Joe. She grabbed the orange juice carton and limped to one of the upper cupboards to get a cup glass. She still was wearing the knee brace but she will be able to take it off soon. She couldn't wait to get the darn thing off!
"You should have seen it. Poor Mark didn't know where to hide for the rest of lunchtime."
The teen poured herself some juice on the glass cup. She took a sip and turned around. She jumped in surprise when she saw her mother standing in the living room by the counter. Kat didn't hear the detective walk in the living room. She smiled at her mother but it soon vanished when she noticed the sad look her face and how red her eyes were.
"Hey, I have to go," Kat informed her friend, not taking her eyes off her mother. "I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bye."
Kat hanged up and put her phone away as she place the glass cup she was holding on top of the counter.
Olivia cleared her throat and softly said, "I need to talk to you about something. Join me in the couch?"
"Yeah, ok," Kat nodded.
She started to get worried as she walked out of the kitchen to the living room. The only times that her mother had said those words were when she had to go undercover. Was her mother going to go undercover again? She mentally shook those thoughts away and sat down on the couch next to her mother.
Kat glanced at the direction of her mother's bedroom where Calvin has been sleeping since he moved in with them while her mother slept in the couch. Her eyes didn't left the bedroom as she talked to her mother. "Where's Calvin? Shouldn't he hear this too?"
Upon hearing Calvin's name, Olivia's eyes welled up in tears as she suppressed down a sob. She pulled her daughter in a hug that it startled the teen by the sudden action.
"Mom? Was is it?" Kat wrapped her arms around her mother without hesitation. "What's wrong?"
"They t-took him away," Liv choked out, her arms tightening around Kat. "Child Services took Calvin away."
The teen pulled away from her mother's embrace. Kat stared at her mother in disbelieve. "What?"
"Vivian took him to live with his grandparents in Vermont," Olivia wiped the tears away. "I couldn't do anything about it."
Kat shook her head, not wanting to believe what her mother was telling her. Calvin gone? Taken away to live in Vermont?
She felt her chest tightened in sadness. Her eyesight got blurry as tears started to roll down her face. Her hands turn into fists as she let out a sob. Kat felt her mother's arm wrapping around her shoulders and the teen immediately clung to her.
"He c-can't be g-gonne," Kat sobbed, her hands tightening around her mother's blue turtleneck shirt. "We we-were supposed to go the m-movies to-tomorrow."
Olivia held her daughter closer as she cried silently.
"He was l-like my little brother."
"I know he was," Liv kissed the top of her daughter's head. She rubbed her hand down Kat's back to try to calm her down. It worked a bit but Kat was still crying and hugging her tightly. "He was like a son to me too."
Kat didn't know how she clutched to her mother. Her eyes were dry and itchy from all the crying, the front of her mother's shirt was soaked with her tears and her sobs have become hiccups. Her mother was still rubbing her back and running her fingers through her dark brown hair. She didn't notice until now that somehow, during her crying and sobbing, she ended up sitting in her mother's lap. The last time she sat on her mother's lap was when her mother was suffering from PTSD and just needed to hold the teen close.
"Mom?" Kat slightly winced at how hoarse her voice sounded.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Liv whispered, tightening her hold on her daughter.
"Do you think that they will let Calvin visit us soon?"
The detective bit her lip. "I don't know…"
Kat solemnly nodded as she closed her eyes, not letting go of her mother. Her mother's embraced helped the pain lessen a bit.
Well there you have it.
