Chapter 20
*Sam's POV*
I barely slept last night trying to gather my thoughts and arrange my plan for today. I fell asleep in every class, which resulted in me receiving detention from Ms. Ackerman and Briggs.
Shamefully, that's why I was hauling ass to the music room. I was super late to my voice lesson and praying to God that Dakota was still there. I ran into the room out of breath and all. But, I was too late he was gone and his briefcase was no where in sight.
"Shit," I said hitting the wall next to me. 'What to do, what to do?' I thought. Dakota thought I quit, and I was going to, but this was important to me. Now, I needed a way to prove that I want this.
That's when an idea came to my head. I quickly got out my phone and called the only person I thought could help.
"Principal Franklin, it's Sam… I'm good…. I know I know I'm only supposed to call you on your cell if there is an emergency, but this kid of important… I need your help." I said.
I explained everything that had happen the day before, and what I needed from him. He was happy to help in anyway he could. I quickly jotted down the information and headed towards my car.
I arrived at the address on the paper thirty minutes later. Traffic was horrible, I can't believe Dakota drives all the way over there to coach me. I took a deep breath and headed up to the house.
I knocked on the door and a few seconds later it was answered by an woman that looked around my mother's age. "Hi, I'm…" I started.
"You must be Sam. Ted called and said you were coming." She said with a genuine smile. "Come on in, it's cold out there." She moved over and made room for me to step in the foyer. I did as I was told and made my way into the foyer.
She held out her hand. "I'm Linda, Dakota's wife." She said. I took her hand and shook.
"It's nice to meet you," I said. "Thank you so much for letting me do this." I continued.
"Oh it's my pleasure. It's very rare that I meet Dakota's voice students." She said. "If you're ready, he's held up in his office. Its right down this hall, make a left and it's the first door on the right." She finished with a smile.
I nodded. "Thank you," I said. Before following her directions towards the office. I made it to the doorway. Dakota's back was turned towards me and his head was down. I took a deep breath and recalled the words of the song I managed to learn the night before.
"Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by
The rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes
And leap..."
Dakota turned around halfway through the first verse. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but the look on his face was shock.
"It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down"
"I'm through accepting limits
Cuz someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love, I guess I've lost
Well if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost"
"I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!"
I stopped singing and watched Dakota intently. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but what he did next surprised me.
(Dakota)
"I hope you're happy
I hope your happy now that your choosing this –"
I was actually glad that I managed to learn the full song. More important I was happy that Dakota actually let me hear him sing for real. Of course every now and a then he would let me here a note, but that was it. He had the voice of a opera performer, but it wasn't as extreme. I smiled as I continued the next line.
(Sam)
"You too-
I hope it brings you bliss"
Dakota stood up and grabbed both of my hands.
(Sam and Dakota)
"I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy my friend"
He smiled wildly and kissed both of my hands before letting them go. He gave me a nod to continue. I smiled and sung loudly.
(Sam)
"So if you care to find me
Look to the Western sky!
As someone told me lately
Everyone deserves the chance to fly
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me!"
"Tell them how I am defying gravity
I'm flying high, defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!"
(Dakota)
Look at her
She's wicked
Get her!
(Sam)
Bring me down!
(Dakota)
No one mourns the wicked
So we got to bring her -
(Sam)
Ahhhh!
(Dakota)
-Down!
I finished out the ending of the song and looked at Dakota out of breath. "I'm sorry." I said. When he didn't respond I continued. I let my personal problems come between me and what I want, but I don't want to do that anymore. I need to do this, for me. And, I can't do it without you." I finished.
He nodded his head. "You did good, but you could do great with that song. I think it will make a great stage audition, but first we need to tweek it some more to fit your range." He said. "So, I want to take it from the beginning and break down the song piece by piece."
I smiled widely. "So, that means that you're still with me?" I asked.
He smiled. "I was never going anywhere Sam. I just needed you to believe in you." He said. "You're talented Sam, but talent isn't enough. You got to have faith that you can do it. That you deserve to go all the way. I want you to want it so much, you're willing to push pass your comfort zone, and take that chance."
I nodded my head. "Now, let's get you ready for U of W School of Arts." He said patting me on my back.
*The next day*
I felt brand new. I was happy for the first time in a long time, and it was because I felt free. Didn't mean I still didn't miss Freddie, but at least me and him being apart allowed me to think about myself, which was what I missed about being single.
I made my way to my locker after I made my way into the school. First thing I grabbed was two fat cake packs, to hold me over until lunch, but after thinking about it I grabbed two more. I closed my locker to see Carly leaning against the locker next to mine.
"Um, hi," I said as I took in the face she was making.
"Hey," She said back. I starred at her for a few more seconds before continuing. "Something bothering you, Shay?"
"Okay, so you know how the other week was me and Brad one year anniversary, right?" She asked.
"Yeah, you had me up all damn night trying to help you find the perfect outfit for your stupid date, no offense." I said. "What about it?"
"Well, we decided to be completely committed to each other." She said.
"And, that's a problem?" I asked, really confused on what the problem was.
"The problem is I caught him in a lie last night." She said. "We were supposed to go to Spencer's art show at the Northern Art Gallery downtown, right. Well he called me two hours before and told me he couldn't make it he had to babysit his little cousin. I didn't doubt him or ask question, because I trusted him. I said okay, and rode with Spencer."
I nodded my head, so she would know I was still listening even though I had opened my locker to get my homework out as the first bell rang.
"Anyways, after the show me and Spence went Pini's to celebrate two of his sculptures being sold, and Brad was there with this red headed tramp, who was definitely not younger than us." She said causing me to stop and looking at her.
"Asshole," I said.
"That's what I said as I poured someone's strawberry lemonade on his head." She said crossing her arms.
I fake sniffled and touched her shoulder. "I'm so proud of you."
"Well don't be. I throw this huge ass fit in the middle of Pini's just to find out that she was a friend of the families. They grew up together, and she's in town to look at colleges." Carly finished.
"Well, why did he lie about her?" I asked.
"He said, he didn't want me to react badly. So, I said none of that shit would have happened if he would've told me the truth to begin with. Anyways, we fought it out, and eventually reached an understanding." She said.
I stopped her in my confusion. "Okay, if you two have reached an understanding and he apologized for lying, I'm having a hard time figuring out why you're sad." I said back to her.
"Because, now he wants to have a 'come to Jesus' discussion tonight, where we come clean about anything we ever lied about. The point is we get it out in the open, so we can have a fresh start." She said.
"Yeah, I can see where that will go wrong for him. After all, he's a varsity football player who used to fuck anything in a skirt." I laughed. "But, at the same time you guys were friends before and you know all of this information, so why does it matter to you." I asked as we continued to walk.
"Have you forgotten, I slept with one of his best friends?" She whispered. She was referring to the fact that she had lost her virginity to Gibby two years ago.
I laughed. "I didn't forget, but that happened way before you two got together. He can't really hold it over your head." I said.
"Or, he could, I mean what if Freddie told you he slept with me or Jessica before you two got together?" She asked before realizing what she said. She smacked her face with her hands. "Sam, I am so sorry. I forgot…" She started, but I stopped her.
"Carly, it's fine. You didn't mean any harm I'm sure. To be honest, I would be pissed, but I would get over it. More importantly, I would rather hear it from him, then from someone else who found out about it." I said, pushing Freddie back out of my mind as soon as I said my piece.
"I guess," she said. "You're right, I should tell him."
"Now, you sound like my best friend. Let's get to class, I really not in the mood to hear Ms. Ackerman's bullshit today." I said.
"You go ahead I have to go get my stuff out of my locker. I'll meet you there." Carly said.
"Okay," I said before continuing the long walk to the history hall.
I almost was at the door when I saw Freddie coming from the opposite way. I took a deep breath as he got closer to classroom. I was planning to play it cool, but that was until Emma came out the room to meet him. The talked intently for a few seconds, and then she wrapped her arms around his neck. He snaked his arms around his waist and nodded his head.
My heart sank, I knew there was a chance he would end up with Emma after we broke up, but that didn't mean it wouldn't hurt for me to see them together. More importantly I didn't believe it would be so damn soon.
I slowly back away, and decided that it would be okay to deal with Ms. Ackerman's bullshit after all.
"Sam," I heard being called as I turned to walk away extremely fast. I took another breath and turned to face my recent ex.
"Hi Freddie," I started. "I'm sorry; I wasn't trying to interrupt…" I started, but he cut me off."
"No, it's okay." He started before sighing deeply.
I looked closely at him. I had become an expert when it came to Freddie's facial. He was worried… really worried.
"Freddie is everything okay?" I asked.
He shook his head. "Sam, I know we broke up, but I can't hold this in." He said.
"Okay, now you're scaring me Benson," I stated.
"There's something you need to know Sam." He said.
*Right after first period*
I was furious. I didn't know what I was going to do when I found him, but I knew it wasn't going to be a pretty scene.
I made my way to the parking lot. I knew he wasn't going to be heading to class. His mission was to miss class. There he was standing by his car with some freshmen slut. I began to walk faster the closer I got to him.
"Hey Sweet…" He started, but didn't have to finish before the front of my right hand slammed into his face so hard it echoed throughout the parking lot. "WHAT THE FUCK SAM?!" The girl he was with seemed to take the hint because she immediately walked off when my hand made contact with his face.
"THAT WAS FOR WHAT HAPPENED AT THE FUCKING PARTY!" I yelled right before my hand reversed and the back of it made contact with his other cheek. "AND, THAT WAS FOR FUCKING TELLING FREDDIE WHAT THE HELL YOU DID! YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING, LOW DOWN, ASSHOLE!"
Jonah rubbed his cheeks, and shook his head. "You need to calm the fuck down." He said back to me.
"I NEED TO CALM DOWN?! ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW JONAH?" I said back to really wanting to hit him again. "YOU CONSCIENCLY FUCKED ME KNOWING I WAS WAY TO DRUNK!"
"Sam, I…" He started, but I wasn't about to let him get a word in.
"DO YOU KNOW I COULD CHARGE YOU WITH A COUNT OF RAPE? DID YOU FORGET MY STEPDAD IS A FUCKING LAWYER; AND A GREAT ASS ONE AT THAT! YOU WILL BE BEHIND BARS AND SOME PRISONMATES BITCH SO FAST, YOU WON'T EVEN RECALL A TRIAL!" I continued to yell.
"SAM, I DIDN'T RAPE YOU!" He yelled back to get me to shut up. I starred at him in disbelief. "I didn't. That night I was just as hammered as you were to be honest I don't remember half of the shit that happened." He said.
"The last thing I remember was making out with that brunette from Oakcrest High. The next morning I woke up in a room completely naked. The only reason I knew I wasn't alone is there was some chicks underwear on the other side of me. I assumed it was the Oakcrest girl, but she was sleep underneath Cameron." He said. I still didn't believe him.
"I figured that if it was stranger than it wasn't worth worrying about. And, if I knew the person than it would come out eventually, that's when your boyfriend came storming up to me on Monday, and hinted around me sleeping with you. I didn't recall you leaving the party, because you and Shay were as drunk as the rest of us. So, I put two and two together." He finished.
"Come on Sam," He said after I stayed silent. "I'm a lot of things, but I would never rape anyone. Let alone you of all people."
"Then why the hell would you tell Freddie all that bullshit about me screaming your name and coming to you." I asked still questioning his innocence.
"Because, I wasn't about to let the nub get the best of me, he came at me all wrong. So, I gave him a reason to be pissed." He said as if it wasn't a big deal.
"That has got to be the stupidest shit you have ever done Jonah. Freddie was ready to call a code blue on you with the entire football team, which would've had you laid up in a hospital somewhere. Lucky for you, Emma talked him into talking to me before he did it." I said actually hearing him out.
I have known Jonah a lot of years, and I knew the truth was he would never purposely hurt anyone. If this was any of my other exes like Dean, that would be understandable. However, this was Jonah he acted out, but he wasn't dangerous.
"Oh please, I'm not scarred of your nub and his friends." He said.
"You should be Jonah, they have three hundred pound defenders one of them alone would destroy you." I said.
"So, you do care." He said with a smile.
I rolled my eyes. "Don't even go there Jonah, because I almost let him do it. Then I thought about my four friends who wouldn't graduate because of it. I just don't understand why you would let him get you riled to the point where you're making shit up." I finished. Men are idiots.
"Because, he had the girl I want and it was killing me Sam." He said.
I stopped in my tracks. I felt that everything around me had frozen and time was standing still. I know I didn't just hear what I thought I heard. I couldn't of.
"I'm sorry… come again," I stated with a look of confusion.
Jonah sighed and took out a cigarette lightening it, and taking a puff.
"I'm in love with you Sam." He said.
