Summary:- Izaya rules over humans and vampires alike that is until he accidentally discovers one of his precious humans might not be what he seems.
Izaya spun around in his leather spiny chair his sharp all seeing gaze taking in the entirety of Ikebukuro that showed as a live feed on the wall of small screens. While his fellow but lower species were still in dark basements hiding from the sun in their expensive and uv resistant coffins, the vampire king was already up watching the last of the sun teasingly dip out of sight.
Perhaps he was a coward afraid of death, funny seeing as he was born dead. Even so immortality didn't yet exist. Still it didn't stop him taking risks wanting to bask in the cruel sunlight that dusted so many of his brethren.
Another reason was that he was a picky eater. The delicacies were laid out in front of him. Teenagers that had only just left school, the more adult clubs beginning to open, the couples going on their dates... The thick vein pulsing, pumping fresh blood through everyone of them.
His fangs salivated at the very thought of sinking sharp canines and letting the sweet life blood quench his hunger. Not just anyone would do. "This one." Izaya declared gleaming crimson orbs narrowing on a raven haired girl walking out alone. Such a tasty looking morsel. Even though he could get into his meal's heads it took a lot of energy.
The pure blood paused hearing the nervous footsteps hurrying up the stairs. His nose twitched inhaling the determination and fear the human felt. Few had been stupid enough to willingly fall into his lap knowing they would be drained within mere moments in his embrace.
This one it seemed was stupid enough a harsh but hesitant knock on the door. With his super hearing he could hear each breath, hear the delicious life source pumping through their body. Izaya gazed mournfully at the screen. It looked as if his delicacy would have to wait another night to witness the throes of passion as their life was consumed.
The knocking paused for a few moments then continued. Polite and desperate a weird combination. Stroking his fingers down the smooth varnished wood Izaya opened the door to his penthouse apartment seeing what his meal for tonight looked like.
Licking his lips he wasn't disappointed. A timid raven haired teenager stared up at him deep blue eyes full of desperation. The boy clearly knew who he was the fear radiating from him along with something else...excitement?
Ah his precious humans were truly interesting. "Orihara-sama?" Masking a smirk Izaya swept back inside the long coat on his shoulders like a fur trimmed cloak. "I-I'm sorry to disturb you this late- I mean early. I need your help."
"Come in. Do you want a drink? Perhaps something to eat?" Whatever was wrong had spooked the young human to seek him out. The true god and monster of Ikebukuro.
"No thank you. Orihara-sama, please can you turn me?" Huh? The young raven looked like he was going to cry fingers trembling yet that strange gleam never faltered. What a wonderfully complexed pawn.
"Turn you? Now why would I do that? You haven't even told me your name." Not that he needed to know. Everyone in Ikebukuro was known to him.
The teen shuffled on his feet staring at the floor. "I'm Ryugamine Mikado, you're the only one that can help me."
Izaya shrugged taking a seat in his spiny chair. "Sounds like an air conditioner. Your name mean. If you want my help then I need to know why you need it so desperately."
Mikado shuddered curling in on himself. "I-I can't. Please turn me." So it was a secret? Good now he was even more interested.
"Come here." Izaya commanded holding out his hand. Even without compulsion the teen walked over to him eyes scrunched closed. There was no way that the young human would throw his life away to willingly join their ranks. "Stay still."
Mikado was surprisingly obedient, maybe he did want this after all. Resting his finger on the zip of the sweatshirt Izaya ran his finger up playing with the zipper. Pinching it between finger and thumb the vampire slowly brought it down revealing a perfectly smooth throat for him to bite into.
Pulling the teen closer the pure blood's tongue licked along the surface earning another shudder from his meal. As much as he would like to dig straight in, the information and secrets inside the boy's mind proved a better temptation. Letting his fangs elongate Izaya nipped and sucked at the area sinking his fangs into the slim throat. "Uhn!"
The warm fresh blood spilled over his tongue caressing his taste buds. "Ah!" Izaya moaned in ecstasy wanting more. Mikado's blood was exquisite to say the least the thought of losing such a delicacy turned his stomach.
More and more he wanted it his fangs sinking deeper into the artery. "Mm." Gulping greedily the vampire indulged still keeping an eye on the teen's heart rate. Emotions that weren't his own began to fill him along with a chain of memories that belonged to Mikado.
Love, happiness, sadness, guilt and still there was that touch of excitement. Izaya blinked eyes narrowed as he pulled away from the teen cradling the unconscious human boy in his lap. What he had witnessed was impossible but if those memories were real then that meant... Leaning back in his chair his hunger sated Izaya closed his eyes taking a closer look at the memories he had absorbed, fingers carding lazily through Mikado's raven hair.
x-x- Mikado's memories x-x
Mikado sat anxiously watching as the clock hand moved. Just a bit longer... A shrill ringing rang through the school signalling the end of the day. While everyone took their time he had already scraped back his chair and hot tailed it down the stairs to his locker.
Kida and Anri already knew where he would be going. Quickly changing his shoes over the sixteen year old ran from the school building. Excitement flooded through every fibre of his being wanting to see his older friend again.
As usual they seemed to meet somewhere where the clouds could be seen. This time it was a park the faux blond laying down under the bright sunlight tinted sunglasses perched on his nose, a lit cigarette between his lips. Mikado smiled tip toeing stealthily towards the sleeping man.
"School finished then?" The mellowed voice spoke. Mikado sighed not once had he managed to sneak up on his friend. Ever since they had bumped into each other that day when he had first moved to Ikebukuro Shizuo Heiwajima had been there to help him.
"Yeah." The teen mumbled laying down next to the blond. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach thinking of how he was going to get his feelings across.
"What's wrong? Your heart rate is erratic?" Shizuo took off his sunglasses stubbing his cigarette on the thick bark of the tree they were laying under. "Are you sick?" Mikado flushed finding smoky mocha eyes gazing at him.
"N-no. I wanted to ask you something. I'm sorry if this is a bother..." What if he was rejected? What if Shizuo didn't want to be with him any more?
"Spit it out kid." Mikado nodded not wanting to make the blond angry.
"...I've fallen in love with you... I-if you feel the same...maybe do you want to go out?" Inwardly he cursed listening to how his voice cracked and whined. This was a bad idea, why had he taken the advice from a chat room?
His friend didn't look impressed merely leaning against the tree sipping on the strawberry milk he always carried around. "Shizuo-san please say something." Mikado averted his eyes staring at the ground.
"...Kid you don't want to get involved with me." The blond sighed pushing himself up. "I'm...fond of you too. But...I... Ugh!" Guilt racked him watching Shizuo tug harshly on his bangs. The strawberry milkshake carton was knocked over instead of pink liquid it was dark red. "...Do you want to come round my home?"
Mikado beamed. He hadn't been to Shizuo's house before. "Yes." His crush smiled though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
The teen blinked as he was led through the double doors of a church. Was this where his friend lived? "Come on in." It seemed so. The church didn't look abandoned loud music played. Mikado stared at the couple standing at the end of the aisle. "This way."
Shizuo led him to a side door walking to the end and opening another door. This one looked older a bent cross engraved in the black iron. Mikado watched the blond slip the key back around his neck.
From there the pair descended a staircase into a large barely lit room. "I'm home." Shizuo called out though there was no reply. "Do you want anything to eat or drink?" Nervously Mikado shook his head. Everything was bathed in shadow the only lights were pointlessly dull, lighting the room just enough for him to see. Eight doors surrounded the edge of the room all locked with do not disturb signs.
"Kyohei, I might need your help." Shizuo's voice was soft and could barely be heard. "Kid take a seat." Mikado did as he was told finding the large corner unit surprisingly comfortable. The chances of progressing their friendship were slim especially since Shizuo had never called him by his name.
"...I'm not human." The raven blinked in shock. "I'm a vampire." Shizuo's voice was solemn but he couldn't help laugh.
"You can't be. We were taught about the night creatures. Vampires can't be out in sunlight, they don't eat normal food or carry crosses. I've seen you yawn and you don't have fangs."
"Careful they don't like being woken this early. I'm not a full vampire. Damn it. Kyohei!" Mikado's gaze snapped to the door that had just closed. Blue orbs widened seeing a new figure sitting in the chair opposite them.
"You seemed to be doing fine by yourself. Bringing a human into our home... It should be okay. You must be Ryugamine. Shizuo has told me about you." Mikado found himself staring at the sharp fangs that showed when the newcomer spoke. "I'm Kadota Kyohei, Shizuo's current guardian."
At that point his crush got up and walked away. "Leave him. He's like that, it's a surprise he made friends with you. Shizuo is what we would call a Dhamphir. A child born between human and vampire. Whether you still want to be with him or not is down to you. Now that you know his secret you can either stay by his side or you will wake up tomorrow without the knowledge we exist. Shizuo's room is the third on the left."
For Mikado there was no need to think. "Thank you. I want to stay with Shizuo." The vampire flashed a small smile a small breeze blowing past him the same door closing again. Clenching his fists the teen nodded slowly walking to the third door.
The light was on brightly illuminating the room. Shizuo was sitting on the bed another carton in one hand. "Shizuo-san, would you like to go out with me?" Mikado yelped as he was whisked onto the bed held by the strong body of his crush.
"What I am doesn't scare you?" The blond leaned closer peering into his eyes.
"No. I'm not afraid." His face flushed seeing Shizuo smile. It was beautiful.
"Really? Then I guess I can say it too. I love you, Mikado-kun." Both of them grinned Shizuo's fingers caressing his cheeks. Soft lips pressed lightly against his own. "Maybe I should take you home."
Mikado shook his head not wanting to leave. "I want to stay here with you."
The blond sighed playing with his hair. "I want you to stay too but here we have an audience. My family are all vampires they can hear everything that goes on in this church."
Reluctantly he climbed from Shizuo's embrace standing beside the bed feeling a little embarrassed. "Come on, I'll take you home." Mikado blushed the larger hand slipping into his own. His boyfriend was a half vampire.
x-x- Present-x-x
Izaya opened his eyes gazing down at the teen in his lap. Mikado Ryugamine hopelessly in love with Shizuo Heiwajima. Standing up he carried the human boy into his bedroom laying him down on the inky covers.
All the time he thought he knew everyone in Ikebukuro. Dotachin had been a bad vampire hiding something like this from his own master. A Dhamphir, a monster in the guise of human skin. "How should I deal with this?" In his hands he held the one human close to the newly discovered monster.
The teen on the bed furrowed his brow reaching out blindly next to him. Izaya heard the vibration before the unimpressive ringtone burst into life cutting off just as soon as it had begun. Finding the teen's phone with ease the vampire's wicked grin widened.
Can you meet me at the usual place? We need to talk.
Izaya brought the phone to his lips. Why not go and see the monster in question? Placing his fingers to Mikado's forehead he caught the human's thoughts adding the compulsion not to wake up until he returned.
Viewing the Dhamphir through Mikado's memories the creature had looked interesting. Seeing him sitting at a table outside a closed bakery though the blond was breath taking. It appeared he needed to punish his own for hiding such a thing from him.
"Yeah I'm ending things. I could do with your help but the sun has only just gone down. I haven't changed my mind, this is for the best." Izaya's ears perked up listening to the conversation his hearing sharp enough that he could hear the other person on the other end of the phone.
If you're sure. Vorona will be waiting on the bridge for you. Good luck, Shizuo. Izaya blinked hearing his first vampire. Dotachin was being very disobedient. First he had hid the half breed and now he was helping him escape.
Sharp crimson orbs watched as the phone clattered to the floor the blond began coughing and throwing up...blood? Ah that was right it was why the young human had ran to him. Blood poisoning.
Izaya stepped forward pausing when clouded mocha orbs snapped open the dhamphir's head snapping around. It seemed that he was being sensed. Interesting. In his pocket mikado's phone chimed.
Don't come here, its not safe. I'll come and see you. How sickeningly sweet the blond was worried about the young raven. Izaya watched how tense the Dhamphir was. Slowly the blond stood looking around putting his tinted glasses on.
Keeping in just noticeable distance Izaya followed the blond watching as he strode the asphalt with purpose avoiding alley ways and other dark places making sure to walk the brightly lit areas. Dotachin had taught him well.
Not well enough it seemed when one of the vampires rested a hand on his prey's shoulder. "You smell good. Come with me."Ugh maybe he should have made sure that his vampires didn't have the ability to turn others. As it was a whole gang surrounded the sick blond.
Crack. Izaya's eyes zoomed in on the poorly made vampire laying on the floor. The halfling could fight. Super strength could be noted down as one of his abilities. "Get the fuck away!" One by one the vampires were taken down in quick succession.
On the edge of his consciousness he could feel the presence belonging to one of his own drawing closer. Dotachin. Izaya watched the blond stagger knowing this was his window of opportunity. None of his vampires could disobey him but since Dotachin had been one of the first to be turned there might be a little resistance.
Swooping in stealthily Izaya slipped behind his prey gliding a finger along that slim throat. "Wha-" his fangs pierced the smooth skin feeling the hot crimson liquid scald his tongue in its brilliance. "Agh! Ge-" the Dhamphir struggled against him and Izaya knew if the creature wasn't sick it would be a long drawn fight to get him to submit.
But his prey was sick thanks to Mikado so Izaya could ignore the weakened arms trying to push him away. The dhamphir's blood was sweet and bitter drowning his senses wanting to drink every last drop. The night had only begun and already he had discovered two blood sources that were fit for a king.
"No!" A loud cry of despair met his ears interrupting his feeding. Kadota stood frozen a little distance away staring in horror. With a smirk he met those dark eyes licking along his new toy's neck.
Retracting his fangs Izaya let the Dhamphir collapse holding him up with one slim arm. "Dotachin. You've been bad, keeping such a find from me." Taking a step forward his vampire tensed looking determined and defeated at the same time.
"Don't touch him. He hasn't done anything wrong!" His first vampire cried trying to step forward. Holding up his hand the raven muttered his command watching in satisfaction as Dotachin's movements stopped.
Swishing the delicacy around his mouth Izaya swallowed letting the crimson life force glide smoothly down his throat. The blond was the same as Mikado torn up by their love that couldn't happen. "You could have saved them from so much pain. They're mine now." In a blink of an eye he was gone whisking the unconscious Dhamphir away, excited about the new toys he had to play with.
x-x-Shizuo's memories-x-x
"Ow!" Shizuo growled sitting upright hand covering his bloody mouth. Sharp fangs had jabbed his lower lip drawing enough blood to make his family salivate. "Kyohei!" His whispered call was answered the door closing as quickly as it had opened.
"Your fangs grew again?" The vampire took a seat on his bed eyes gleaming. Shizuo wasn't the least bit unsettled knowing his current guardian wouldn't attack him. Just under two years he had been living with his new family after his previous guardian has been killed by a hunter and his little brother had run off to join them.
The blond nodded not trusting himself to speak in case he cut himself up even more. "Open your mouth." Doing as he was told Kadota drew closer bringing a thumb to his lip. Shizuo closed his eyes knowing the pain that would follow.
The vampire's thumb brushed gently against his lip. It meant nothing but it was embarrassing having Kadota's fingers in his mouth. Falling back against his pillow his guardian went with him finger and thumb resting on the end of his newly grown fang. "Shizuo, relax."
The compulsion flitted into his mind his body going lax. The pain was still excruciating stabbing through his body. "Uhn." Opening one eye Shizuo stared up at the concentration on the vampire's face.
Kadota's hand was bloody holding half of his tooth in his palm. Shizuo rolled over in pain. "Shizuo..." It was only one. Taking deep breaths the blond nodded not moving as his friend and guardian gently held his other fang snapping it clean.
Shizuo howled at the loss of his fangs clawing at the covers. "Shizuo." Kadota's hand rested on his cheek. "They're gone now. You can go back to being human." The vampire's voice dropped soft lips brushing against his own.
The Dhamphir sighed letting a wet tongue glide across his bloody lips diving into his mouth. His body trembled at the assault fingers clenching unsure what to do. Flicking his own tongue out the two entwined Kadota's clouded eyes becoming sharper.
Shizuo blinked panting as he lay alone on the bed, Kadota no where to be seen. Closing his eyes he brought his fingers to his healed lips his cheeks darkening. Next to him his phone beeped. Mikado. His current boyfriend.
Pulling himself up he knew he had to get over the little bit of intimacy that he and Kadota shared every time his fangs grew back. It didn't count as a kiss. Shizuo groaned getting ready to meet up with the young raven.
Daylight wasn't painful or an executioner for him like it was his family. Hurrying to the meeting place Shizuo made his way through the humans that didn't have a clue what he was. He couldn't help but wonder if Kadota and his family hated him for being able to do so.
His thoughts dissolved steps slowing as he reached the clearing to his favourite bakery his boyfriend already sitting there waiting for him. "Shizuo-san!" Those deep blue orbs twinkled.
Mikado was one of the few that knew his secret and had brushed it away. To the teen it didn't matter who he was. "Hey. Been waiting long?" Taking a seat he found himself staring at those soft plump lips.
Opposite him the raven flushed averting his eyes. "Hi. N-not really." He squeaked raising one eye to glimpse at him. Shizuo turned away a warm feeling bubbling in his chest.
"Good." The two of them ordered a slice of strawberry cheesecake, Shizuo sipping from his carton of special blood. Both of them flushed slightly the conversation settling into silence as they ate their treats.
The Dhamphir had always had a sweet tooth opting for cakes and dairy produce. When they were finished Shizuo stood taking the teen's hand. Together they walked aimlessly through the streets of Ikebukuro enjoying each other's company.
Well not entirely aimless the pair ending up in front of Mikado's run down apartment. A whole month they had been going out Shizuo afraid of intimacy not wanting to hurt the teen. "Shizuo-san, do you want to come in?" Time to face that fear.
Everything in the bare apartment went unnoticed Shizuo ridding them both of their clothes. Lowering the teen to the tatami mat he kissed his temple moving slowly trying not to startle his boyfriend. "Shizuo-san, I need you."
x-x-x
A mess of tangled limbs and sweaty bodies, Shizuo lay in naked in the futon the teen resting against him. Karisawa would pick up on his scent and tease him mercilessly. "Uhn. Shizuo-san?" Half lidded blue eyes gazed up at him.
"Yeah?" The blond mumbled carding his fingers through soft locks.
"Thank you." Mikado mumbled back closing his eyes. "Oh! I had something to show you." Shizuo watched as the teen shot up wincing at the pain.
It didn't stop the raven rummaging through a pile of mess. "Ouch!" Shizuo sighed sniffing at the scent of blood.
"You cut yourself." The Dhamphir muttered standing up. The raven nodded holding out his finger. Crossing the distance between them Shizuo gently held the teen's finger, flicking his tongue out to catch the small bead of crimson. It never occurred to him that he had never drunk from the vein.
His teeth tingled as the taste exploded on his tongue his eyes dilated his own blood rushing through his body. "...Sh-Shizuo-san?" The Dhamphir staggered skull pounding knees crashing to the floor his heart rate speeding up and slowing down erratically.
"Agh! kyohei!" Shizuo growled feeling like every cell in his body was being changed. A hand reached for him which he swatted away. Blood. That small drop hadn't been enough he needed more.
"Shizuo-san! What's wrong?" The human got closer the small wound teasing him with the goodness that lay beneath. Shizuo lurched forward snatching the slim wrist pinning his meal beneath him. His fangs ached elongating. "Shizuo!"
Plunging forward a dark mass of shadows shot across the floor slamming him back against the wall and away from the flowing life source. The oldest member of his family and the only non vampire stood in the apartment holding her scythe.
Inky tendrils lashed out snaking around his wrists and ankles, Shinra's life partner pinning him down. No matter how much he struggled and thrashed Celty's grip remained firm the thickening tendrils covering his body confining him within a thick ball of darkness.
x-x-x
Shizuo's stomach grumbled his new found hunger tearing through him demanding to be sated. The soft darkness seeped underneath him returning to the source. A hand was around his throat unbreakable in its grip. His nails clawed at his attacker thin lines appearing on pale skin. "Shizuo, what did you do?"
Kadota's voice was low and mournful. "You could have been happy." His guardian's hand didn't budge. "I can smell the human on you. You drank his blood didn't you?" Shizuo thrashed fangs slashing his lower lip.
"I'm going to try siphoning the boy's blood from you." Shizuo stopped trying to get away eyes widening seeing Kadota's sharp fangs glint in the soft light. The blond jolted feeling as the sharp twin points pierced his throat. "Hold on, okay?"
Shizuo froze staring wide eye obeying his guardian's compulsive words. A shiver ran down his spine feeling himself grow weaker as Kadota drank his blood. His hunger was still there just not as bad. Or so he thought.
"Uhn." The heady scent of his own blood made his body feel on fire. Human. He was human with that succulent life force cycling his body.
"Shizuo!" Lifting his forearm his eyes changed showing him the maze of veins beneath his skin. Biting down he watched as the crimson liquid dribbled from the puncture wounds. "No!"
Again he found his friend's fingers in his mouth his arm slapped away and pinned above his head, dark eyes staring into his own. The Dhamphir screamed as his new fangs were snapped off. "Shit." He didn't know why Kadota was staring at him oddly. "I'm sorry, I should have warned you." Shizuo gasped the vampire's tongue slipping past his parted lips. The grip on his wrists tightened. "I'm sorry." Kadota kissed him backing away.
His vision went dark Celty's shadows binding him tightly like a straight jacket. Shizuo snarled tearing at his bindings his gaze focused on the only human in their home. A small thick ball slammed into his mouth forcing his jaw to stay open. Rolling onto his side the out of control Dhampir glared at the headless woman hearing her voice in his head.
Don't fight it. We don't want you to hurt yourself. Until shinra wakes up and examines you, you'll stay like this.
"Shizuo, please stay still." Kadota's voice penetrated through the hunger eyes staring at his guardian. "I'm sorry, me and your previous guardians did everything to protect you so you could have a normal life." A gentle and cold hand rested against his eyes. "You can no longer live like a human. Go to sleep we'll deal with this when Shinra wakes up." The words sank like a stone deep within his mind, his eyelids slipping as his body obeyed.
End of part one
