Chapter 20: Voices

That night, Randall checked the lightbulbs in the hall for a third time. He didn't know why, but they just never seemed to stay lit. After checking the lights, he went to bed in Dave's room. When he walked in, he stopped in his tracks.

Sparky… the dog… was laying at the end of the bed, ears up, eyes white, fur standing on end, and growling.

Randall followed Sparky's glare to a corner. There was nothing there.

"What is it Sparky?" Randall asked, making his way to the corner.

As he stepped in he jolt to a stop. The air was so thin! Randall could hardly breathe in the corner.

Randall stepped away from the corner, removing the strange presence feel. He looked back at Sparky, who was still growling.

Randall then remembered something. He remembered studying in college that if a pet growls at nothing, then it's most likely that an evil unseen presence was there, for only animals and small children could see into the spiritual world.

Concerned for Dave's safety, he picked the child up and moved them to the living room. Yes, they should be much safer here. Randall gently laid the small child on the couch. Dave whines softly and shifted around in his sleep so Randall decided to stay by his side.

Randall curled himself around the small child to keep him warm. He was just about to drift off to sleep when he felt a cold chill run up his spine. Randall jerked his head up and looked around… there was nobody in the room.

Suddenly, Randall started to hear voices. It sounded like they were right there in the room with them. Randall looked around, desperately trying to find the source of the voices.

He listened closely… they were speaking in Latin… a language that Randall was unfortunately unable to understand.

"Where are you?" Randall whispered frighteningly. Where were they?... He wrapped tightly around Dave. getting protective… "Sully? Mike… F-Fungus?"

Randall shook with fear. The voices continued around them. Soon, the voices changed into a bit of growling, frightening the monster even more. He could see shadows moving across the floor, unsure if they were spirits or just plain ol' shadows from the trees outside.

The growling suddenly stopped and all was quiet. Randall looked around… trying to find anyone else in the room, but they were alone.

Suddenly, Randall could hear breathing in his ear. Terrified, Randall slowly turned his head… only to see nothing. The breathing continued in his ear, making Randall start to sweat, petrified. The breathing suddenly stopped and was replaced with a voice… quiet and evil.

"We are here."
