The two women didn't see each other after their interaction in the break room. Late in the afternoon Callie received a text from Arizona that had confused her greatly.
Callie left the day care some time that evening and found Bailey stood about to go in.
"Hey," The ortho surgeon greeted her. "Arizona text me. She said that you'd have Sofia tonight."
"Yes, I did." The other woman confirmed. "I saw your wife earlier and offered, seeing as I couldn't last night. I thought that you might still want your date night. She practically jumped at the opportunity."
"Oh." Was all Callie could say.
"It's good to see the two of you working things out. If you don't mind me saying?"
The brunette couldn't help but smile.
"Yeah. Have you seen her, Arizona?"
"Not since this afternoon." Bailey told her.
"She said that she had said goodbye to Sofia and she'd tell me where to meet her."
"She left the hospital. She had some sort of appointment but I'm not sure."
Having said goodnight to her daughter, Callie was about to make her way home when her phone buzzed in her pocket. The text she read this time confused her again. It was simply an address that she didn't recognise. She made a split second decision and hailed a cab. When the car stopped it was outside a rather nice looking house.
Arizona was sat on the front steps. Her arms were folded and rested on top of her knees in a feeble attempt to stay warm in the crisp chill of the evening.
After paying the driver, Callie got out and walked up the pathway towards her wife. She then watched as the other woman stood and walked around the house. They said nothing. Callie followed her through an unlocked gate and into a spacious back garden.
Both women sat down on the back porch and the brunette finally spoke.
"Are you gonna murder me or something?"
She was trying to get the peds surgeon to look at her but she was just looking straight ahead.
"I love being in bed with you." Arizona responded. "From that first night we spent together it's my favourite thing to do. I know you might not believe me, with everything that's happened but it is. Lying in your arms. Being wrapped up in you. Waking up with you. It's the best." She swallowed. "Well it was. It was until we brought Sofia home. Since then just spending time with her is the greatest thing in the whole world and the three of us together makes me so happy." She wiped away a couple of tears with her fingertips. "Last year, when I first came out of the hospital though, I couldn't feel any joy from it. Being around you made me angry and being around Sofia I was just numb which was horrible and terrifying. I thought that I'd never be the person I was again. I'd never be that happy and I'd never recognise myself." Arizona felt a warm hand grasp hers and hold it firmly. She looked up and found an expression on Callie's face which encouraged her to talk.
Callie had questions. She had opinions too but she knew that they needed to let each other talk when they were ready.
"That apartment was ours and we had some great times. It wasn't always plain sailing but yeah, so many of our milestones happened there and I don't think we'd be here right now if we didn't have those memories to get us through."
"But?"
"When I left the hospital I sat in that apartment for weeks, losing my mind and talking myself into hating you and hating myself. I was awful to you when you were just trying to keep our family together. You were looking after me and I couldn't handle it and I was awful. There was a hospital bed in our room. The room where we spent our first night together. You had to drag me into the shower. The shower that Lexie caught us having sex in. That apartment was ours but it's not anymore because we can't build a future on what happened there, on what we became there."
"So what's this place?" Callie asked, still holding her wife's hand.
"A mistake." Arizona answered, rolling her eyes and turning away but the brunette brought her free hand to her cheek and urged her to look back at her. They were now sat so close that their whole bodies were touching down one side.
"How'd you mean?"
"You wanted space. You wanted separation."
It clicked in Callie's brain.
"So you bought a house?" Her eyes went wide as she raised her voice.
As her posture got larger, Arizona's got smaller. She pulled her partner's hand down and closed her eyes.
"Sorry."
Inhaling and exhaling, Callie composed herself. "You bought a house. On your own."
"It was before I went to see my parents." She began to explain. "I thought we were done Callie. I hurt you so bad and I had no idea that you'd show up as soon as I got back and tell me that you wanted to try. I mean I hoped. God I dreamed that I'd get to but I just thought that I should focus on Sofia. I should focus on being a mother and I couldn't live at Alex's forever so I bought a house with a nice garden for her." Arizona finished and took a breath, finally opened her eyes. "I never thought you'd want to sit this close to me again, let alone live with me."
Callie didn't respond for a minute but she stayed sat impossibly close to the blonde and still held her hand. Then she looked out at the back yard.
"Where did you go this afternoon?"
"Swing set." Now both women were looking ahead. "I had paid the delivery guys a little extra to build it for me. I wanted to be here to tell them not to bother but I was too late. I thought that if I had it Sofia could still play on the swings, even if I can't take her to the park on my bad days."
"So why weren't you gonna let them build it?"
"I didn't know if I'm staying here. I still don't. I bought this place for me and Sofia. Whether we move in depends on you."
"Why me?" Callie asked, turning once more to look at Arizona.
"You have the power here Calliope." The ortho surgeon dropped her hand and she turned and smiled sadly at her before continuing. "I cheated on you. I broke your heart. If you want me I'm yours. If you want this house, it's yours. If you want us to find a different house, okay. You don't want to live with me?"
Callie didn't let her answer her question. She cut her off with a kiss so delicate and slow it was practically torturous.
"Ours." She said insistently. "This house is ours."
