AN: So chapter 20 *Takes deep breath* it has been a long journey and I expect it to be even longer. This has been really fun and I would like to thank all those who have been with me in writing this story and I hope to see all of you until the end. Anyway enough of me being emotional, this chapter will be a more significant one so here you go
I opened my eyes panting and crying. I looked around to see Toothless looking at me. I broke free from her grip and got on my knees trying to catch my breath "Another nightmare?" I looked back at her and nodded. It was basically the same dream as before but it still felt so real. I took a couple more deep breaths letting myself know it wasn't real. I stood up shakily "I really hope these go away soon." I told her walking back. She hummed "Me too, I can't stand seeing you like this." She said sounding concerned
I stood beside her and rubbed her neck "I know Tooth, but I'll get through it." I told her trying to get rid of some of her concern. She brought her head up and nuzzled my face "I hope so Hic." I smiled at her affection; to some it might be embarrassing or weird to some but I've had so little in my life I wouldn't be able to stop her if I tried.
I turned around when I heard the sound of wings. It was my mother "Where were you?" I asked her not even realizing she was gone. She hopped off and yawned "I've been looking for a terror all morning." She said back to me. I looked up; it wasn't that late "When did you wake up?" I asked her. She shrugged at me "Little bit before the sun came up." I shook my head "Why would you do that?" I said almost scolding her "Couldn't sleep… too nervous." I backed off, that was a very reasonable reason
"So did you find one?" I asked her. She chuckled a little "Usually these guys are everywhere but not here though." I rubbed my temples, so we still had to find one "But I found this guy on the far side of the island." I looked back to see a midnight blue terror sitting next to her 'Where did he come from?' I looked at the terror and determined that it was indeed a male. I walked over to him and kneeled down "So what's your name little guy."
He narrowed his eyes at me "Who are you calling little, Shorty?!" I put my hands up and chuckled. He was a sassy one "Sorry." I said to him. He looked at me funny "Did you just understand me?" I nodded my head "Loud and clear." He raised an eye and looked at me with wide eyes "So what is your name?" I asked him again "Shadowmist." He replied shortly
I hummed "Cool name." I told him. He looked surprised before going back to the stoic look "Thanks." I got back up and looked over at my mom "His name is Shadowmist." I told her. I looked over at Shadowmist again and my mom spoke "Well he trusts me so far, a little fish helped with that." She said. Shadowmist looked at me and turned his head
"So what is your name then?" He asked me "Hiccup…" I watched a smirk grow on his face "Really?" I nodded. He chuckled to himself "That's almost as bad as…" He stopped mid sentence while looking over at Toothless "Toothless… is that you?" I looked from him to Toothless with my eye rose "You know Toothless?" I asked him sounding surprised
Toothless looked over at him in confusion as well. Shadowmist shook his head "Not directly but I was a friend of Helen who knows her." I quickly looked back at Toothless who was wearing a stunned face. She lightly shook her head and looked down "Let me guess… you blame me too?" She said still looking down. I started to make my way over to her "Blame you? For what?" He asked sounding confused
"For killing her." She said as I reached her and put my hand on her "Killing her… she's dead?" He asked with a weak voice. Toothless nodded and Shadowmist started pacing before stopping and looking back at us "How?" He asked. I felt Toothless gulp under my hand; I knew she didn't want to tell this story again. She told him the story… the whole story and I tried my best to comfort her
Shadowmist looked down and closed his eyes. I watched a tear fall "Hiccup what's happening?" I heard my mom ask quietly. I looked over Toothless at her "Things are getting… a little deep. I don't want to go into details." I said to her still trying to comfort Toothless "You couldn't have done anything Toothless." I heard Shadowmist say. Toothless finally looked back up at him "H-how could you say that… I could have helped." She said with a couple tears coming out
The midnight blue terror walked over to her and looked into her eyes "No… you couldn't, not without killing yourself." He said rubbing his head against hers. He pulled away and she nodded "You're right but that doesn't make me feel better." She got out quietly. I patted her "If anyone's to blame here Tooth it's that monster that calls herself a queen." I said down to her
She looked up to me with a smile trying to make it onto her face "So you know about the queen then?" Shadowmist asked me to whom I nodded "I don't know when or how but I will take that tyrant down." I told him confidently. He nodded to me "If you ever do, I hope to be there to watch that monster burn." He said with distaste in his voice
I turned back to Toothless after he finished "Are you ok?" I asked her knowing that old wounds have just been opened. She stayed silent before she said some familiar words "I'm a little rough around the edges but as long as you're around I'll be alright." She said copying me from the night before. I patted her one more time before giving the same response "Always Tooth." I told her with a smile that she returned
I turned back to Shadowmist who witnessed that entire episode. I blushed slightly before he asked me a question "So how is it a human can understand us?" I chuckled at how many times I've heard that question "I'm a Volkin." I told him truthfully. He took a step back before looking at Toothless who nodded in confirmation "Wow… did not see that happening to me today." He said sitting down
I waited for a few seconds before asking him "Do you know what a Volkin's duty is?" He looked up "Of course, to bring peace to both sides." I nodded taking a quick peek at my mom "Well to do that I need to take down the red death and to do so I need your help." He looked at me with an eye raised "My help, what could I do? Sure I have a little more power in my shot but nothing that could hurt a behemoth like her."
I don't know why but I pat his head "I need you for a more important task that a warrior." He looked at me with the same confused look "You will be the icebreaker in making peace with humans." I told him referencing the meeting with my father "How could I say no to that?" He said back to me "The issue is that there is no 100% guarantee in your safety because I don't know if they will accept my views on peace." I warned him
He shrugged at me "For even a chance… just a chance to end the violence, I would give my life to a cause like that." He told me confidently. For such a little dragon he had a large amount of spirit. I smiled "I'm glad you accept and if you want to back out that is alright." I told him. He shook his head "From what I have seen of you and the fact you are a volkin… it gives me reason to trust you." My smile widened and I looked over to my mom giving her a nod
I told him that I would bring the village "Alpha" so to speak, to meet me out in the forest and I would call him out when I needed him "But if things go wrong Shadowmist you fly away, don't even hesitate." I told him knowing the well possibility of a bad out come. He nodded his head in understanding. I walked over to my mom
"So this will be the last time we are together before dad finds out." I told her. She closed her eyes and shook her head "I just hope he can accept. I mean he thinks a dragon killed me." She said sounding like she was trying to get me to back out. I gave her a hug "I know somewhere in him he wants peace… he told me himself." I said to her trying to instill confidence in her. She pulled out of the hug but had her hands on my shoulders "I hope you're right Hiccup."
"If things go bad I'll get him out of there." I heard Toothless say behind me. I relayed the message to my mom and she smiled before walking over to her "Thank you Toothless… I trust you'll keep him out of harm's way." She said rubbing her head "For as long as I have a breath in my body I will keep him safe." I repeated that too. Mom looked over at me and smiled "You know… the longer I'm with you two the more I think that you two do belong to be with each other." I felt myself start to blush at the comment but I threw out a quick thank you
She chuckled at my response before patting me on the back "Oh how it is to be in love." I blushed harder "Shut up." She laughed before patting on my back again "Wait in love?" I turned to see Shadowmist looking at us in confusion. I looked at my mom and sighed before turning back "Yes Shadowmist, I'm… in love with Toothless." I told him. He looked at me like I was joking until the looks on all of our faces told him it wasn't "Oh… that's… different." He said not sounding disgusted but rather confused or shocked. I rubbed the back of my head not knowing what the little dragon was thinking. Shadowmist just shook his head "I guess it's not my place to say who you or she should love." He finally said
I was surprised but thankful that he didn't give us trouble "Thank you." I told him. He nodded back to me "So when are we doing this?" He asked talking about the meeting "Near or just before dusk. You guys will wait here in the clearing but stay hidden when we arrive. After talking to him a bit or whatever I do I will call you." I told him the simplistic plan that I had in mind "Then what?" I shrugged "Don't know, I'm kinda winging it but I won't put any of you in harm's way." I told him truthfully. That seemed to be enough for him because he just nodded. I clapped my hands together "Well I guess there's no time like the present. I'll meet all of you here tonight… with my father." They all nodded before I got on Toothless "See you guys tonight." I said before we took off.
"You know Tooth; if we ever want to go fast while flying I would have to make a saddle." I told her. She shrugged under me "I told you already that I'm fine with it." I knew that but I still didn't want that on her but if we ever fought the red death we would need to go fast "Ok, if I make one I'll make it as light as I can and try to make it comfortable." I told her "Ok, sounds good."
She got me in close and I hopped off. I turned around and hugged her "I hope this goes to plan Tooth." I told her expressing my nervousness. She leaned into it "I think you can pull this off Hic. Plus, even if something would happen; your mom, Cloudjumper, and I will be watching you." I sighed and let go of her giving her a nod "I guess I'll see you tonight." I told her "That's a date." She said back to me. I blushed again 'Gods I'm an easy person to make blush.'
I said goodbye one more time before heading into the village. I went to find my father. I passed by the forge when Gobber called over to me "Ahh, come in for work have ya?" I walked over to him "Have you seen my dad Gobber?" I asked him. He rubbed his mustache "Err ya, he said he would be down by the docks." He said back "Ok thanks Gobber, I'll be back." I told him. He waved me off and I left for the docks
I seen him right away preparing a ship to go fishing, he was loading up barrels. I walked over to him and he set down the barrel in the ship "Are you trying to find me as I work?" He asked me jokingly. I laughed lightly "Nah, I just want to ask something of you." I said to him. He raised an eye "What might that be?" I sighed "I want to show you something tonight… and I will need you to come with an open mind." I said trying not to let on anything. He looked confused "Why would I need an open mind?" He asked me "Just trust me on this dad this is… important to me. Probably one of the most important." I told him hoping he wouldn't keep asking. He nodded "If it means a lot to you I will come but… you have to help me with loading up this ship." He said back "Of course, anything."
I brought over a couple barrels first. Then I helped them pack the nets because multiple ships were being loaded and they needed all the help they could get. I watched one of the villagers trying to fold a massive net on his own but he kept failing and started to tangle it. I walked over to him "Stop, you really don't want to do that." I told him because he was about to tangle it more. He looked over at me with surprise "Why would I listen to you?" He asked sounding offended and a little annoyed
I pointed at the net "Because if you keep doing that you're going to have a mess." He looked down at it and sighed before nodding "I figured, this didn't seem right at all." I walked over to him "We are going to need a couple more people." I looked over at some people loading barrels on another ship "Hey guys." I called over. They looked at me with distaste "What do you want runt?" He said venomously. I pointed at the net "How about some help with the net?" I asked him with even more venom in my voice. He looked at me surprised before chuckling "Guess he has a little backbone than we thought eh lads." He said over to the people with him. I narrowed my eyes at him "You gonna stand there all day?" He put his hands up "Ok, ok fine we'll help you with the damn net."
They walked over to me "You two need to get those two sides apart before we continue with anything and you can help me on this side." I said pointing at the people I was talking about. We got the net untangled shortly "Ok now you guys on the far side bring it over here." They did as I said and we folded it in half "Ok just a couple more times and then we can load it up on the ship." I told them. We folded until it would fit in the storage it needed to. We walked it over to the ship and put it in the hatched that it belonged. I patted some of the seaweed that dried on the net off of me "Thanks for the help." I told them as they left. The one guy that was working on the net alone walked up to me "Thanks for err… helping me, you prevented me a lot of trouble." I smiled slightly "No problem." He started to walk away but stopped after a few steps ant turned "You know… you're not as bad as people portray." He said before actually walking off
I watched his figure walk away and help out some others. He was the first villager to ever say that… ever. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I looked over to see my day "You may not know it yet Hiccup but I can see it in you... You're a leader." I laughed at that "Hilarious dad really." He shook his head "No really Hiccup, not many people can order others around. That and you asked them even though they gave you trouble." I stayed silent for a few seconds "Well I'm going to go help Gobber if that's alright?"I said to him. He nodded to me and I quickly left not really wanting to hear him talk about how I am a leader
I walked up to the forge and asked Gobber what he needed done "Eh, don't really have anything still. There hasn't been a raid in a while, minus the one that ruined the houses." He said to me shrugging "So do whatever you want." I walked into my little room and grabbed some metal… I am going to build a katana. I got the necessary tools and material before starting to work. I knew this project would take a little more time than I had so I was banking on things going well with my dad.
I worked for a couple hours when Gobber came in with roasted fish "Thought ye might be hungry." I set what was to be the blade back into the fire and started to dig in. I finished within a minute. I wiped my face "Thanks Gobber, didn't realize how hungry I was." He looked at me with an eye rose "Hungry don't describe what you just did." I laughed a little "Ok maybe I haven't eaten in a little while." He shrugged "So what are you working on?" He asked pointing to the soon to be katana "This Gobber, will be my weapon of choice." I told him "Bout time you got one of those." I rolled my eyes before pulling the metal out and pounding on it again. I did this for another couple hours when I decided to close up the forge and prepare for tonight.
I walked back to the house to wait for my dad. When I got there he wasn't home yet so I sat down and started to wait. After several minutes I heard the door open and turned to see my dad walking in "Hey dad." I said standing up and turning towards him "Hi Hiccup… so what is it you wanted to show me?" He asked. I pointed at his ax "I'll need you to get rid of any weapons on you." He gave me a look that screamed crazy "And why would I do that?" I sighed deciding to use a different tactic "Just trust me dad. You told me earlier that you wanted to make things up and if you do this I swear that this will make up for everything." I told him using the forgiveness card. I watched him sigh before nodding "This must mean a lot." He said as he put away his ax and dagger
"Thank you, now I need you to follow me." I said walking out of the door and into the forest. I felt nervousness start to set in but I kept pushing it back. When we got in the forest I pointed us in the direction of the clearing. After a minute my dad spoke up "You're not going to kill me out here or something are ya?' He joked. I laughed a little "No dad." I replied back "Well can you give me a little hint on what it is I'm going to see?" I rubbed my chin "You're really going to have to trust me." I told him. He shook his head "You're kinda worrying me with that line."
We silence after that all the way to the clearing. When I stopped my dad started to look around "So I assume this is where you train?" I nodded and he hummed "So what is it you wanted me to see all the way out here?" I took a deep breath "Do you by any chance remember what we talked about in the hut when I was hurt?" I asked him. He rose an eye in confusion "Not all of it." He replied "We talked about if you would accept peace with dragons and you told me maybe." He looked even more confused "What does that have to do with what you're going to show me?" I took another deep breath "What if I told you that it is possible?"
He stood there for a second "What do you mean?" He asked "I mean I have found a way to coexist with dragons." He scoffed "If only, those beasts don't have any thought." He said back with a disbelieving voice "What if I could prove it?" I said now reaching the critical point in our conversation. He shook his head "You wouldn't be able to, you'd be dead before you could try." I shook my head "I can prove it dad… please just listen to me." He crossed his arms "Fine how can you show me?" He said "I can show you but don't… don't freak out." I could see him start to believe me now "Shadowmist… please come here."
I felt him land on my shoulder and my dad looked at me with big eyes "Hiccup… there's a dragon on your shoulder." I shook my head and scratched under shadowmist's chin "I know… this is what I'm telling you peace is possible." I told him hoping to convince him. He kept a worried look on me and I heard him gulp "So you're telling me he won't hurt you?" I shook my head yes "And he won't hurt you either unless you threaten him."
He shook his head at me "How did you find out about this?" He asked me still sounding like he didn't believe it "I just studied the behavior of dragon and noticed that they aren't too hostile when not in a raid." I stopped scratching Shadowmist "Dad, they aren't all bad." He started to walk closer to me "C-can I?" He said pointing at Shadowmist. I nodded my head "Yes… but please don't try anything against him. He trusts you just as you are him so don't ruin it." I told him. He nodded and walked over slowly until he was a few feet away "So w-what do I do?"
"Stick your hand out to him and look away… it's the ultimate sign of trust." I told him. He looked extremely reluctant but he stuck out a shaky arm and looked away. Shadowmist put his head into his hand. My dad opened his eyes and looked at the terror rubbing himself against him "Yo-you actually found a way…" I nodded. My dad took his hand away and looked at me "So if dragons are peaceful how become they raid than?" He asked sounding a little agitated
I rose my hands in a calming matter "That… is why I have decided to show you what I know. After all how could I show you this without fear?" He shook his head before asking again. I took a deep breath "They kinda have to." He looked at me funny "Have to?" I nodded "Yes, they have this… thing in their nest…" He grabbed my shoulder "You've been to the nest… how did you find it." I pushed his hand off "Let me finish." He put up his hands "This thing… it controls them and makes them get her food. And the fact that it's the size of a mountain means I'll need help getting rid of it." He looked at me with wide eyes "As big as a mountain?" I nodded
He shook his head "So how did you find out about that?" This is where I'm truly going to have to be persuasive "Well you see… I had a little help." I pointed to Shadowmist "He's not the only one I've befriended… and he's not the only type either." He looked at me with wide eyes "You mean…" I nodded "Yes… I have befriended big dragons." He went over and sat on a rock "Wow…" He sat there in shock before looking over at me "C-can I see one of these… bigger dragons?" I gulped "Yes… only if you can promise me that you won't do anything bad." I told him wanting his word "I promise as long as it doesn't try anything." I sighed before going all in with this commitment "Toothless…"
She walked out of the far side of the clearing. I watched my dad stiffen "Is that…?" He said sounding scared "Yes dad… she's a night fury." He looked at me with wide eyes. Toothless walked up on my side and I rubbed her head "I'm telling you dad… this is something that can be done." He stood up off of the rock and was shaking like a leaf in the wind "There's no reason to be scared dad I swear on my honor and life." He took a couple shaky steps towards us "I can't believe I'm doing this." I heard him mumble under his breath. He stopped a few feet away "Now do the same thing as you did with the terror." He looked at me crazy "This isn't a terror." He said scared "No, she's not but I've known her longer than the terror so you will be ok." He closed his eyes and stuck his shaky hand out
Toothless leaned into it and he completely froze before looking at his hand "I'm still alive…" I smiled "I told you… nothing to worry about." He started to rub her head and laughed "Who would have thought… I'm petting a night fury." He said with nervous laughter. Then he pulled his hand away and took a deep breath "This… changes everything." He said looking between Shadowmist and Toothless. I patted Toothless "It does and the only thing in my way is the monster of the nest." He looked at me "So why do you need my help?" He asked me "Well that's the thing… I need your help convincing the village, one dragon rider isn't enough but a village…" He shook his hands "Wait, dragon rider?!" He said with a disbelieving voice "Yes, I have ridden on Toothless before."
He kept the surprised look but looked away "Well it might take a little time before I can fully comprehend this." I placed a hand on his shoulder "I didn't expect you tom hel I worried you wouldn't even listen." I told him truthfully. He shook his head "It's just… your mother was killed by a dragon and I might have a hard time with this." He told me looking at the ground. I kept rubbing his shoulder "I would bet that she would want peace too." He chuckled lightly "That she would have… if anything you're just like her." More than you know dad. I patted his shoulder "So… do you want to go back?" He nodded "I need to sleep this is… a lot to take in." I pulled him off of the rock and turned to go back
We both froze when we turned around. Standing there was my mom. I looked over at my dad who looked at me "You're seeing this right?" I nodded my head "Yes dad… yes I am." I took a couple steps back letting my mom take over. I really didn't expect this to happen. My dad walked slowly towards her "Stoick I know that you must me angry with me…" He still didn't say anything but kept walking "Yell, scream, do anything Stoick just stop being so… stoic." When he got there she looked away but he put his hands on her cheeks and looked into her eyes
"You're just as beautiful as the day I lost you."
AN: So I kept the reunion between Stoick and Valka near the same just because if figured if you found your 16 year dead wife you would be kinda shocked and happy to find her. I might add a little more emotion later. Also thanks to scribe0magic for the name of the terror. So now onto reviews
scribe0magic- That is very much true. Also I'm using the name as you can tell and I'll try to give him the same personality as well
Guest- Yep, no problem
Shadows Rise From The Tides- No I'm thinking about it but I'm not 100% sure if I will because I'm not sure how to do it. But there is still a good chance that I might
ArthurShade- Most likely yes he will be able to
Guest (On a Quest)- I'm happy to hear and here you go
Viper4K- Thanks, I'm happy to please. Also I tried the spell check thing but couldn't get it to work so I'm just sticking with what I have
TheSilentFury- True… but I'm not sure if she'll get that ability though
Zela Night- Just playing heart strings like a harp
DeadMenPlaying- Love the idea truly, but I told you my input on what I have planned
Kennayil- Ya I liked how the explanation was so I put it in. Also for Astrid, I figured that she needed a different personality. Oh and in this chapter he had absolutely no idea she was going to do that.
Dimentional Phaser- Well now he's trying a little harder
So that's my response to those. You know, when I write I almost always listen to music, it helps me keep distractions away plus it sounds nice. Anyways I hope you all enjoyed and I'll see you guys in the next chapter
You took the time to read this; you can take the time to review
