I got a few suggestions last time and I've tried to incorporate a lot of them in, but it was hard and I'm sorry if I couldn't quite fit your suggestion in. And Autumn Herondale- I'm sorry about the lack of dialogue but I am planning a chapter soon where it is basically all dialogue so that should improve it for you. Thank you to greygirl2358, AutumnHerondale, Ilubcupcakes and LuminousFishy for reviewing. Here you go:
Chapter Nineteen
The profound red flicker of the fire shone in Clary's eyes as she tried to drive the life back into her poor, drained, shaking hands. She stared deep into the fire, mesmerised by the changing colours, by the flames which appeared to be dancing in the ash of the fireplace. Just looking at the bright blaze made her feel safer, made her feel warmer and casted some hope into her heart.
Once the warmth had seeped through her skin and into her bones, Clary rose, searching the room for an extra jumper, or another pair of socks. Her eyes felt draw to the window, guided by the intensely bright light of the snow, which continued to fall outside. It was beginning to turn into a bit of a flurry. She hoped the boys would come in soon.
She crossed the room, pressing her warm hands against the bitter cold of the window pane. The intense white snow illuminated the window as Clary looked out of it, blinding her sea green eyes, just for a little bit. As her eyes adjusted to nature's own form of light, Clary tried to make out the dark shadows of two young men amongst the blanket of whiteness. And that's when she saw it, when her eyes caught the two black spots amongst the kingdom of white. At first she thought they were just playing around, but, upon looking closer she realised that they were fighting. Or more, rather, that Seb was attacking and Jace was just lying on the floor, helpless, barely able to move one of his well-trained muscles.
Flame red hair flowing behind her, Clary burst from the deep oak doors of the manor. Her feet, bundled only in socks, hit the snow as fast as they could, the moisture seeping through to the bare skin below. A torrent of snow hit her in the face, smudging her sight, but she soldiered on. Finally, after jumping the small, frozen river in a desperate act, Clary reached her brothers. She was no longer thinking, she was no longer even in control of her own actions. Fear and instinct had taken the reins and, with her mind somewhere else, she lifted her leg and swung it round, the tip of her foot connecting hard with Seb's right temple. The light fell from his eyes as Jace's blood continued to seep into the snow.
Clary was torn. She didn't know who to take with her, back into the warmth and safety of the mansion. On one hand, she loved Jace, and to see him so shattered, lying there on the cold, hard ground, tore at her heart strings, but on the other hand she loved Seb too, even if it wasn't in the same way, plus there was a pulsing part at the back of her mind that was screaming with guilt. Eventually, with great effort, she pulled Jace into her arms and began the walk back, vowing to alert Jocelyn about Seb.
She carried him back through hallway after hallway as he had done for her so many times before. As she walked, she swept his sticky, bloodied hair out of his eyes and attempted to keep his head upright. His arm hung limp, over the side of the nest Clary had made out of her arms, and in her hurried rush, Jace's arm slammed into the wooden banisters and the stone walls that they passed. Clary's heart was hammering, she just hoped that no damage had been made that couldn't be undone with a rune.
They marched past the intricately designed ceilings, scurried by the carefully painted art, through to what appeared to be becoming a little bit of a hospital ward, through to Jocelyn's room. As usual, Jocelyn was there, perched on her elder chair, staring thoughtfully out of the frosted window. Her head snapped round as she heard Clary's urgent footsteps and she appeared to almost roll her eyes upon seeing Jace's lifeless body as if to say 'not again'. Clary delicately laid Jace on the big bed, cushioning his head on the orange pillows, before blurting out "Seb. Seb's still out there, by the river on the snow. I'm sorry, I couldn't carry both." With this confession, Jocelyn's eyes lit up, and her feet began to move swiftly as she dashed down the stairs and into the snow.
Clary watched her mother leave, waiting for the sense of anxiety and aloneness to hit her. In situations like these, Clary's nerves would usually be right on the edge of breaking point, her brain would be scattered. Right about now, she would usually be desperately groping for an idea, for something she could do. But, with a ground-breaking thud Clary realised, it came to her suddenly, how much she had grown up in these last few months. She no longer needed constant help, was no longer in constant fear that she was doing something wrong. Now, she knew what to do. Feeling positively euphoric, Clary ran to the side of the bed, ignoring Jace's moans (who appeared to be coming to), and, shoving her hands under the bed she pulled out the giant, rustic suitcase. With a smile, she flung open the lid to reveal row upon row of silver steles. With no time to lose, she grabbed the one closest to her and stood up, kicking the heavy suitcase aside with one fluid movement. Moving her head closer to Jace's wounds, she turned over his pale and cold arm, and with a steady hand she began to draw.
Soon enough, Jace was covered with the necessary ancient healing rune and was snoring, peacefully as his skin began to work its own, time old magic. She sat in the same aged and worn chair that Jace had when she had been injured, the same chair that he had refused to leave, that he had sat in, day and night. She watched Jace's angelic face as he slept, his features frozen in time, his thoughts hidden from the fabric of reality, his mind lost in the beautiful land of dreams. And there she sat, her hand wrapped around Jace's for hours. Slowly the sun began to set and the sky was streaked with gold, the exact same shade as Jace's eyes. She wondered what was happening to her, she couldn't go anywhere now, couldn't see anything without it reminding her of Jace, and yet it wasn't a burden upon her, it didn't bother her, instead it filled her chest with a warm and fuzzy feeling.
The sun set and darkness began to trickle into the sky, coating the landscape and removing all colours. As dusk took hold, Jace awoke; his mind groggy but otherwise fine. The main part of his blood was gone, washed away by the power of the rune.
"How are you?" Clary asked with a smile.
"Umm I would say fine but then I'd be a liar. My head feels like a herd of elephants threw a party in it." Jace said; his face screwed up. Clary chuckled.
"Here, drink this."
"What is it?"
"It's mundane medicine. Quite clever really. Runes only heal physical wounds, but this, this will clear the pain if you give it long enough." Jace stared down at the water, which was a milky white colour and had little spots of white flakes floating in it. "Trust me." Clary said.
"It will help." With one last, long stare at the horror in the glass, Jace threw it down his neck with a great gulp. He had to resist the urge to spit it back out again. The taste was vile. He felt like it was poison, bleeding slowly into his tongue and attacking his throat. But he trusted Clary and so he swallowed it, the revulsion evident on his face. Once he had opened his eyes again, he noticed that Clary's arm was outstretched, another glass in her hand. This time though, the water was clear and lucid, presumably to wash away the venom that still lurked in the corners of his mouth. He took the cool glass from her hand and swilled it round his mouth before allowing it to slide down his warm throat. The water tasted sweet and almost melodic in his mouth, washing away all memory of the toxin that came before it.
Once he had drunk all of the liquid, he turned to Clary and smiled. "It's good to have you back" she said softly before kissing him on his velvety soft lips.
Thank you for reading! If you could review that would be great as it means a lot. Also, if you have any ideas or suggestions or comments please just tell me!
