Chapter 19
James's POV
We had made it into Nebraska. We had been driving for eight hours and for some reason we haven't been attacked by another monster. This was too weird. Kal alone would attract several monsters, but with all of us in a group? We should be being attacked every five minutes. Something was very wrong.
Kal was starting to doze off when she shot up.
"James, watch out for that dog!" She shouted.
There was a dog a few feet in front of us but it was unlike any dog I've ever seen. Its fur looked black and it was a big dog too. It looked in our direction as I slowed down. The dog had burning red eyes.
"That' no dog!" I said speeding up trying to hit the demon dog with full force. He tried to dodge but I think I managed to hit his leg. Good that should keep him from running after us. He can't run very fast if his leg is hurt.
"Uh James?" Elizabeth moaned waking up.
"What?"
"Why did you—"
"James step on it!" Nathan interrupted her.
I didn't ask why. I floored it.
"Wha-whats going on?!" Kal asked nervously.
"We're being chased by a pack of hellhounds!" Nathan told us.
"Hellhounds?! Are you serious?!" Elizabeth asked terrified.
"Why on earth would I joke about something like this?"
I gritted my teeth. All of us panicking isn't going to help us. I looked at the gas meter.
"Hey I don't want to worry anybody but we're almost out of gas."
"Well this is just perfect isn't it?" Elizabeth groaned.
"Alright listen up!" Kal suddenly shouted.
We all stopped talking and looked at her. She had a look of determination in her eyes.
"We are not going to die alright? For crying out loud, we beat a Cyclops! Compared to that what are hellhounds?" She spoke with a lot of confidence. I'm not sure where this was coming from but I liked it.
"Nathan, can you do to them whatever you did to the Cyclops?" Kal asked.
"No, they'd rip me to shreds before I could get a chance."
"Alright then, Elizabeth, did you fix your bow enough so that you can shoot?"
"Not yet, it got crushed by a Cyclops so it's going to take awhile to fix it."
"James what do you know about hellhounds? Could we defend ourselves with what weapons we have?"
"I know that hellhounds are very fast and very strong. They have a strong sense of smell as well. If it was just one or two hellhounds we could probably take them, but we don't stand much of a chance against an entire pack."
"Alright then..." Kal looked around for a minute.
"Okay I have an idea. James drive this car into the forest on the right."
I looked at her like she was crazy. "Kal, there are so many trees in there, I don't ho wlong I can drive in there without wrecking it."
"Just do it!" Elizabeth screamed. I could hear the hellhounds barking now.
I made a sharp turn and we sped into the forest. I had to slow down a bit to avoid all the trees. Meanwhile Kal was telling the others what to do.
"Alright get you packs on and leave them on! Make sure no matter what you don't leave anything behind!" She instructed.
Why worry about if we leave something behind? I thought.
I kept narrowly dodging the trees. Slowly the barking of the hellhounds became fainter.
I looked in the rearview mirror to look for them. I couldn't see them.
"Looks like we lost them huh?" I said triumphantly.
"James watch out!" Elizabeth shouted.
Too late. While I had been looking in the rearview mirror for that one second, I hadn't noticed the tree in front of me and we crashed. The air bags went off.
I pushed the airbag out of my face.
"Is everyone okay?" I asked.
"We're okay!" Nathan responded.
Elizabeth just nodded.
"Come on! Everybody out! Remember, bring everything!"
We grabbed our things as fast as we could and tried to open the door. We couldn't.
"The impact must have jammed the locks!" Nathan explained.
"Alright I got this." I said. I placed my hand on the door handle and focused. A second later I heard a click. I opened the door and did the same to the other doors and a few seconds later we were running deeper into the forest.
"We're almost safe guys! No resting now!" Kal told us, even though she looked exhausted too. She had kept telling us to run as fast as we could. She seemed determined to get keep us safe.
"I got this part." She said. She stuck her hands at the river. A few seconds later the left and right side of the river started flowing in the opposite directions, leaving us a semi-dry path.
"Hurry guys! I don't know how long I can keep this under control!"
It was true some of the water was already seeping back. We ran as fast as we could through the path Kal had created. As soon as we were on the other side she let the river drop and she jumped in the river and swam to the other side. Even though the river's current looked strong she swam through it with ease. When she got to the other side with us, both her and her pack were completely dry.
"Okay…I think…we're safe now…" She panted. She let herself fall to the ground. The rest of us sat down too.
"Kal that was..."
"Amazing!" Elizabeth finished for me.
"No…problem…" She breathed.
"Seriously that was incredible!" Elizabeth went on.
"It…wasn't….that….incredible…"
"Uh yeah it was! I've never seen anyone do that other than Percy!"
"I didn't…try to…do that…I just knew….that I…wanted to get you guys…across…and it just kind of….happened." Kal was completely out of breath.
"Well whatever happened, I think we should get a little bit more into the woods so that we aren't in the clearing." Nathan said, getting up.
I looked at him like he was nuts.
"Nathan, Kal is out of breath, I think we should just rest here." I told him.
"N-no, Nathan's right…we need to get into the forest." Kal agreed. She looked exhausted.
"Kal, you look like you don't even have the energy to stand up." I told her.
"It's fine really." She said, struggling to get up. "I can…" She started to fall. She would of hit her face if I hadn't caught her in time.
"Kal, you should rest." I tried to help her sit down, but she worked against me, trying to stand again.
"No, I won't rest until we're safe…" Kal said as I caught her as she collapsed again.
"Well if you insist then…hold on a minute." I took her backpack off of her back and I took her right arm and put it around my shoulder. I put my left arm around her shoulder and with my free arm I grabbed her backpack. "Okay, now we can go." I said.
Nathan and Elizabeth looked at Kal and me for a second and then Elizabeth smiled.
"Alright," Nathan said, he was now smiling too. "Let's go."
Kal's POV
I looked at James out the corner of my eye. The guy was probably exhausted, but he didn't slow down or rest for an instance. He kept helping me walk the entire way. I admit it was really nice having him help me.
"Hey you okay Kal? Your face is getting kind of red." James said looking at me.
"Oh um uh I'm fine." I stuttered, turning my head so he couldn't see me blush.
"That was really cool how you took charge back there." James told me.
"I just didn't want you guys getting hurt if I would have panicked again." I said, still blushing.
"Well what you did was seriously awesome." James complimented.
"Thanks."
We walked a little bit more and then James said. "That thing you did with the river was amazing. I've heard that Percy had done that before, but I've never seen it before you did it."
"I wasn't exactly trying to make the river part. I just knew that I wanted to get you guys to the other side safely. The water just sort of reacted to my thoughts." I explained. It was true too. I wasn't trying to part it. I was just focused on getting my friends across. I didn't expect that to happen. And even though it was really cool and I got them across, controlling the river exhausted me. If the water hadn't of given some sort of energy boost when I jumped in it, I don't think I would have had the energy to swim across.
"Well I guess every girl just gets her Moses moment huh?" James joked.
I laughed softly.
Ahead of us, Nathan came to a halt.
"This is far enough, we'll be safe here." Nathan said.
"Did anyone leave anything behind us?" I asked, as James sat me down.
"Nope I have all my stuff." Elizabeth answered.
"Same here." Nathan said.
"Kal, why did you want us to bring all of our things with us? We could have moved a lot faster if we left it behind, not that I'm complaining. I'm glad I still have all my things of course." James asked.
"You had told me that Hellhounds had a strong sense of smell, so if we had left our things behind…" I explained.
"They would have been able to track us." He finished. He grinned. "Nice thinking."
Nathan smiled. "I was wondering when the old Kal would have come out. Before you found out you were a demigod, you never would have let somebody else protect you."
"Heh, the old me was always here. Anyone would freak out if they saw a real live Cyclops for the first time." I told him.
"True. Well I think we should get some rest."
"Someone's going to have to keep watch." Elizabeth pointed out.
"I'll keep first watch then." Nathan said. "Now you guys get some rest. You guys look like you've been in a wreck."
"You do too. And we were in a wreck." I reminded him.
He grinned. Then he went over to a tree and started to break off some branches. "I'm going to get some firewood, you guys rest, now" He said again, because James was starting to sit back up.
"Alright fine." James surrendered.
I laid down and used my backpack as a pillow. As soon as my head hit that backpack I was out. That night, I had a weird dream.
