Chapter 20 :
Some weeks had spent and Arthur was in his office, in the middle of a lunch with Mithian, but his phone had run, and seeing that it was Guinevere…
Mithian was looking at him, longing evident in her eyes.
Maybe Merlin was right.
Maybe she did need to get away from him.
He walked closer and she froze at the smile on his face.
"Of course. I love you too, Guinevere."
And then he closed the call, and smile at her in a sorry way.
"I am sorry… It's just that Gwen is working so hard on her exams, we barely have time to see each other lately, so..."
"I get it, Arthur." she smiled sadly.
Because she loved him.
And that also meant that she was happy if he was happy.
And God it was so obvious that he was…
"So..." she tried to start a conversation and blue eyes laid on her. "How are things with Gwen, then?"
He smiled.
She forced herself to think it did not affect her.
"Perfect." he said dreamily and she tried a smile but was sure it looked a lot more like a grimace. Luckily, Arthur couldn't care less at the moment. "Actually, I'm taking her on holidays, very soon."
Her heart stopped.
That was a huge step.
And yes, she knew that they were getting serious…
But this?
"Mithian?" he cut her and she jumped, before looking back at him and praying that he didn't notice.
"What?" she asked and he frowned slightly.
"I was asking if you were seeing someone..."
"No." she only answered and he frowned slightly.
"Someone as beautiful, charming, smart and witty? It can't be."
She chuckled bitterly.
"I can thing of a few example for whom it wasn't enough..."
She waited for him to understand hat she meant. But he never did. Instead he smiled at her and squeezed her hand quickly,
"You'll find someone, Mithian. I know it."
She looked down.
What if she had, and he was in love with the wrong person?
Guinevere walked into the library and sighed when she thought about the long hours of work that were awaiting her. She had not even time to see Arthur lately and that was starting to get on her nerves, she couldn't wait for them to go on holidays together.
She smiled, thinking about it.
But then she sighed loudly when she came in the library and every single seat was taken…
And bloody hell, that couldn't be!
But then she glimpsed someone waving at her, and at first she froze but then smiled.
Lancelot.
Morgana was laid down on Merlin's bed, thinking. She turned around and sure enough he was there, deeply asleep. He had worked a night shift at the hospital but had wanted her to go to sleep with him, just to hold her in his arms.
She smiled sadly and stroke his cheek tenderly.
She loved him.
She loved him so much.
How could she love someone so much?
She was not Arthur.
This kind of love wasn't for her…
So she took the most difficult decision of her all life and kissed his cheek tenderly before getting up in silence, gathering her things and leaving his apartment.
And his life.
Gwen walked to him and he smiled.
"How did you manage to save a spot?"
He smiled gently.
"I know you come here more often than not, thought I would save you the trouble."
Guinevere smiled genuinely at him before sitting down,
"Thank you, Lance."
And she was sure of it, they would be able to save their friendship.
With time.
"So, how are thing with Arthur?" he asked and she froze, but when she looked up, he looked genuine and she let out a breath, hesitating.
"Lancelot, we don't have to-"
"I know." he smiled. "But if we're to be friends again, I want to know what's happening in your life. He is a part of your life."
She frowned slightly.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive."
She hesitated again and he chuckled, some people glared at them.
"Gwen," he said again. "I mean it."
She smiled shyly.
"Everything is perfect."
A small silence.
"I am glad for you, truly."
Arthur came back home after a long day at work, and he had barely set foot on the living room that Merlin jumped on him, eyes wide and frantic.
"Do you know where she is?!"
"What?" frowned Arthur.
"Morgana!"
"At her place, I gather?"
But Merlin shook his head, and his hands were trembling, that much Arthur could see.
"She left. I'm sure that she left.."
"Merlin..."
"No!" screamed the young doctor, "She was there with me, when I woke up she was gone, her things were gone and I mean all of her things." Arthur stopped talking, "And I drove to her place, no one ! Not even her bloody car!"
"There must have been an explanation..." tried Arthur, but even himself was suspicious now, because he knew his sister and that something she could do, disapear like that.
"Oh there is," said Merlin in a dead voice. "She's gone." his voice broke. "She left me without even a word."
