Hello, everyone! Welcome back, for the last time… Yes, I'm sorry, but this is the last chapter. I know I told you it might be two chapters but I decided that with the amount of content I had planned, it would be better to include it all in one long chapter, rather than make you all wait a week for the last third of a chapter that finishes the story. So, I hope you all enjoy! By the way, I have learned from last time, there is a lot of gore in this chapter, so be wary.
Ruby
It had been three perfect years since team RWBY had graduated from Beacon, Blake and Yang had quickly moved in together and had started a small fighting school specializing in Boxing and Kendo. Which they now lived atop of, when they did leave their fledgling school it was only to go out on missions or to visit with their friends and family, Weiss and Ruby being the most common people they visited. They had been doing well and Ruby knew that Yang planned to propose to Blake soon, which had made Ruby squeal in excitement when Yang had first told her.
Ruby and Weiss had also been doing very well, they had fully committed themselves to being Huntresses and went out on missions sometimes five times a week. With the large number of missions that they conducted they could easily afford their modest home in the city, Weiss refusing to use her families money for her own personal comfort. They frequently visited friends and family when they weren't out on the hunt, leading an active social life, but taking time whenever necessary to just be by themselves.
At the moment they were out in the mountains, hiking to a Grimm nest that had been troubling a nearby trade outpost. Nearing the nest, they were preparing their weaponry to tackle and clear it.
"Is there anything coming up on us?" Weiss asked, trusting Ruby's Aura sensing, which had improved immensely since their days at Beacon.
Ruby was sitting on the ground, utterly still, focusing all of her attention on projecting her Aura as far as she could, touching every last tree, leaf, and rock within a one kilometer radius. Only stopping to answer Weiss' question.
"There's nothing Weiss, and I'm not just talking about Grimm, there isn't even a squirrel or rabbit or anything," Ruby said, frowning slightly at the oddity.
"Really? Isn't there usually at least a little wild life around these nests?" Weiss questioned, not taking her eyes and binoculars away from the nests entrance for a moment.
"Yeah… It's kind of weirding me out a bit, but it really shouldn't hamper the clearing of the nest, right?" Ruby asked as she stood up, shifting nervously from foot to foot after she did so.
"I suppose, but I don't like it, so I would like it if we were extra careful this time, okay?" Weiss said, still not looking up from the binoculars.
Ruby chuckled, "You know that if you keep looking into those things you're going to leave a mark, right?" Ruby said, playfully.
Weiss seemed to hesitate for a moment before lowering the binoculars.
"Sorry, I'm just, kind of nervous for this one…" Weiss admitted as she stood up to walk back to Ruby.
"What's there to be nervous about? We've cleared out enough of these things to have it down to a science." Ruby inquired.
"I don't know, I think we should just get going now and get this over with, okay?" Weiss asked, still sounding troubled.
"Whatever you want! I just want to do one thing first, okay?" Ruby said happily.
"Um, I suppose, what is i-mmph!" Weiss started only to be stopped by a certain flash of red rose petals and a pair of accompanying lips.
Ruby was happy to notice that Weiss deepened the kiss for a moment before drawing away. Ruby was upside down hanging from a tree by the massive thorn like blade that Cold Thorn transformed into when it's exterior plates along the shin and foot rearranged themselves up onto the thigh. Using White Petal to kick off the tree, Cold Thorn transformed back into its leg form while in the air, finishing just in time for Ruby to land safely on the ground.
"You dolt." Weiss said, smiling wide all the while. "Let's get going and get this mission done so I can kiss you more back at the house."
"Great! Then let's goooooo!" Ruby exclaimed excitedly, before running off toward the nest at a pace she knew Weiss could catch up to.
They quickly arrived at the cave entrance in the side of the mountain where the Grimm had been spawning. Without a word between them Weiss cocked Myrtenaster and fired a large amount of burn dust into the cave, making sure to target and hit the back of the cave so the Grimm would be forced out of it. Sure enough, a variable horde of Grimm came spewing out of the cave, howling and roaring as they left the mouth of the cave. Right into the waiting maw of carnage that was the White Rose pair.
At first there were only some lighter Grimm, Beowolves, and Ursa, not enough for Weiss nor Ruby to really exert themselves. Then came out a few Deathstalkers, easily dispatched. The swinging and lunging of claws, stingers, and fangs were consistently stopped short and cut to pieces. The flow of Grimm soon lessened until seemingly after only a few minutes, there were none left alive, the rest disintegrating into nothing.
Sheathing their weapons, they looked around, or in Ruby's case sensed around, noting the severe lack of any Grimm.
Weiss finally broke the silence, "That was way too easy, I don't think we have ever encountered one so weak, never mind the fact that we are in one of the most heavily infested areas in the world. Ruby? could you do a sweep to check for anything suspicious?"
"Sure thing." Ruby responded, immediately becoming motionless, extending her Aura back out to cover the kilometer radius.
Sensing a flock of Nevermore circling a little way further up the mountain, getting ready to swoop down and take them by surprise, if it wasn't for Ruby's Aura sensing that is.
"Flock of Nevermore inbound at 5 o'clock." Ruby said calmly, spinning to face the incoming Grimm, drawing Crescent Rose as she did so.
"I knew it!" Weiss shouted triumphantly. "I knew there was something off, well this will make it interesting at least." still sounding extremely pleased with herself for guessing the ambush of sorts, Weiss unsheathed Myrtenaster, readying herself for the fight.
A shrill cawing screech played itself out toward them, followed by more as the flock swooped in for the kill. Only, it wasn't them doing the killing.
Ruby watched with her Aura as Weiss cast a propulsion Glyph below her feet, launching herself toward the flock, readying a dust round as she did. Ruby grinned, winding up, she punched Frosted Stem forward toward the flock, her lower forearm disengaging from her upper arm in a flash of roses. Her fist shot up toward the leading Nevermore, trailing a disassembling chain all the way to her upper arm. Right before Frosted Stem impacted with the Nevermore's neck she opened her fist and extended her claws, letting them sink deep into the Nevermore's flesh.
Jumping up to follow Frosted Stem, she fired as she went, increasing her speed as she did, the chain pulling her only increasing her speed even more, knocking aside Nevermore feathers that got close to her with Crescent Rose between shots as she flew. When she was about to reach the Nevermore, she sent a pulse of Aura to Frosted Stem, causing a Freeze Dust Crystal embedded in the palm of Frosted Stem to activate, freezing solid a large portion of the Nevermore's neck. Careening past the Nevermore's head, Crescent Rose caught and sliced just below its jaw, cleanly decapitating the beast. Ruby ripped Frosted Stem's chain forward toward another Nevermore, ripping the frozen chunk of Flesh from the already disappearing body and sending it flying forward. The icy block of Grimm flesh crashed into the Nevermore's skull, the block and the Grimm's skull shattering on impact.
Flying upward on momentum alone, Ruby unlocked Ruby's Stem's lower half, letting it extend behind her and to the side, chain whipping in the wind before suddenly going completely taunt, Crescent Rose having hooked on the corner of a Nevermore's beak. Kicking her legs, Ruby set off the shotguns in her legs, firing to gain momentum as she directed her flight around the Nevermore's body, using the point where Crescent Rose hooked on its beak as an anchor. Gaining speed, she activated her semblance, becoming a blur that circled up and down the Nevermore's body, leaving a trail of chain from Ruby's Stem. After only a few seconds, the Nevermore's body was covered in the chain. Ruby slowed for a moment, reaching the highest point in her arc. Without even glancing back to look, she shot her shotgun legs and yanked Ruby's Stem's chain with all of her might. SHICKSHICKSHICKSHICK! There was a horrid ripping, slicing sound as Crescent Rose broke through the beak of the Nevermore and following the path laid out for it by the chain, carved the Nevermore into what resembled a blood and gore covered, giant slinky.
Above her, a Nevermore swooped in to take advantage of the lull so it could attack her. Raising her feet above her, Ruby prepared for its impact. Taking the entirety of the impact with Cold Thorn and White Petal, she balanced each foot on each of the two tips of the beasts lower and upper beak. Grabbing its extended tongue with Frosted Stem, she froze the muscle completely, lowering Crescent Rose she blew it completely off. The tongue falling back into its mouth, the Nevermore gagged, closing its maw as it did so, allowing Ruby to lightly hop off its beak and land onto the face plate between its eyes. Lifting White Petal, Ruby sent another pulse to the four hatches on the sides of her leg, opening them and sending one last Aura burst to activate the Flare Dust Crystals in each of the four hatches. Ruby smiled, she couldn't see the light, only the Nevermore could see the blinding flash burning into its retinas. A horrible screech filled the air as the Nevermore was blinded, beginning to fall out of the air from its inability to see, Ruby rode it down, still standing in the same spot. She slowly lowered White Petal, placing the sole of its foot beside Cold Thorn's ankle. Transforming Cold Thorn, she balanced on its sharpened edge as the Grimm fell. As it finally hit the ground and stopped, Ruby kept travelling with the same speed, the point of Cold Thorn cracking the face plate of the Nevermore, then, breaking through its skull, Ruby travelled like a bullet through its body, creating a tunnel of sorts through it. The honed edge of Cold Thorn's blade carving its way through the creature, as White Petal fired repeatedly so as to slow Ruby down enough to not be crushed by her own landing when she did finally work her way through the Grimm. Finally slicing out of the Nevermore's lower abdomen, she landed crouched, Cold Thorn having transformed back into its leg form mid-air.
Standing up as the Nevermore collapsed and started to fade away, Ruby extended her Aura once again to look for any signs of danger. Instead she found Weiss roughly fifty yards away, wiping Myrtenaster off on a disappearing Nevermore's already blood covered body.
"So, was that fun or what?!" Ruby yelled in Weiss' direction, as she began to jog on over.
"I would say "or what" and-OH GOD, RUBY! WHY ARE YOU COVERED IN GUTS?!" Weiss shrieked, horrified it seemed.
"Ahh don't worry, they're the Nevermore's, they will disintegrate in a minute." Ruby explained, smiling widely.
"You dolt! You gave me a real fright there. I had this bad feeling about this mission and then you go making yourself look horribly injured… I love you but I swear you are going to drive me crazy one day." Weiss said, sounding exasperated.
Ruby could feel the wet blood evaporating off of her.
"See? It's already coming off! Now let's get going to hand this mission in!" Ruby fervently said, spinning around and walking a few feet, before a thick liquid splashed across her back, and a shrill, horrifying scream was burned forever into her memory.
Ruby didn't have to turn around, she could sense it with her Aura, but she turned anyway, just in case Weiss had some inkling of life in her and could still see Ruby, she wanted Weiss to see her face one last time even though the light blue telltale Aura of the girl she loved was already gone.
There was Weiss… or what was left of her, all Ruby could sense was Weiss' beautiful face, dripping blood from her lips, and her left hand, twitching. That's all that was above the glistening set of razor sharp teeth, every other part of Weiss was inside this Grimm's mouth, it was a sort of giant worm, its head raised out of the ground to eat Weiss.
GULP! The creatures jaw shifted slightly while it swallowed Weiss' body. The heiress' hand fell first, sliding down over the teeth before landing in the dirt, still twitching. Then came Ruby's loved one's head, sliding forward toward Ruby, flipping over the lips of the horrid beast, Weiss' head fell face first in the dirt, jaw slack and open, eyes unblinking.
Ruby felt herself break.
The world went dark, not only was she blind, but she now felt soulless. Her very soul had turned completely off, that was the only way she could cope.
She looked over her own shoulder, in her own special Aura vision, she could see herself crying, screaming, a horrid agonized expression plastered on her face. She heard herself,
"AAAAAAAAaAaaaAAAaaA!"
Her body convulsed, the chains in Ruby's Stem, and Frosted Stem released, spooling onto the ground as she lost control. After a moment, the Grimm started to slither back into the ground.
"NO! YOU ARE NOT GETTING AWAY!" Ruby shrieked.
She threw her arms back, whipping the chains behind her. Reaching their apex, she threw them forward toward the Grimm. Her claws and Crescent Rose extending, waiting to sink into Grimm flesh. When they did, she pulled, dragging the massive beast out of the ground, finally reconnecting her lower and upper arms. As quickly as she could, she used her claws and Scythe to rip the Grimm to shreds. Weiss' body was not inside of it. Her body had disappeared along with the Grimm by the time she had finished frantically looking.
Gasping over and over again she couldn't help but think,
Why?! What could I have done?! I can't sense things in the ground! But she trusted me! Loved me! I loved her! DAMN IT! She wasn't thinking these thoughts she realized, she was screaming them, but she couldn't stop, she just couldn't stop.
The world went black.
She woke up hours later, well, she had not really fallen asleep, her sense of being just suddenly came back to her. She was kneeling on the ground, unaware of what was happening around her, she pushed out her Aura to get a sense of what was happening. She saw thousands of slowly disintegrating Grimm bodies, hundreds and hundreds of felled trees. Ruby didn't understand what was happening, then, she sensed Weiss' disembodied head.
She wailed and screamed as she recalled what had happened, not wanting to accept what had happened, wanting anything but this to have happened. She crawled to Weiss' head, lifting it up, cradling it in her arms as she cried.
The sound of a jet growled in the distance, slowly growing closer to the new clearing.
"Do you hear that, Weiss? It's just like when I got hurt." Ruby whispered, "I… I… I d-don't think they c-can help tho-ough…" Ruby hiccupped pitifully.
The jet landed, just like the first time, Yang and Blake jumped out, running over to Ruby Yang embraced her, easing Weiss' head out of her hands.
"Oh my gosh… Did she do all of this?" Blake whispered hoarsely, referring to Ruby.
Yang looked up at Blake, tears in her eyes as she placed Weiss' head beside her.
"Oh. Oh. Oh no…" Blake continued sorrowfully.
Ruby wailed again at Blake's words, her screams echoing off the mountains.
Blake
Blake was helping the scavenging team to look for any materials and personal effects that Weiss or Ruby had left. Things like Ruby's scroll which had sent off the distress beacon in the first place had been found easily, while others were a bit harder to find. They had taken Ruby and Yang on the jet and flown them back to Vale, saying they would come back once they had dropped the sisters off. Deciding to take the opportunity, Blake had recruited some of the crew who had been on the jet to begin a search for any valuables left behind.
Blake wandered over to the spot where they had found Ruby, sitting beside a hole in the ground, where Weiss had been eaten. Blake kneeled down, letting a few silent tears slide down her face. A glint caught her eye, looking toward it, she saw a white and silver box, dirtied from lying on the ground. Carefully picking it up, Blake recognized the Schnee symbol on the lid. Although when she opened the lid, she seized up, dropping the box. She began to cry hard, covering her mouth to stifle the cries, to no avail.
The card had read in brail and in raised letters,
"My dearest Ruby, you mean absolutely everything to me, and I don't know what I would do without you. So to express my love for you, and the need I have to never be separated from my dearest dolt, and I know that this is an uncommon way to ask but, I wanted to ask you a very important question… Will you marry me?"
Under this card, there was a beautiful white gold ring, with a modestly sized Ruby in the shape of a rose embedded in it.
Thank you all for staying with this story, and with me. It was a fantastic experience writing this FanFiction. I loved every minute of writing it, and reading your comments. I'm moving on to other writing projects that aren't Fanfictions. I may come back and write more here eventually, but I wouldn't count on it. So unfortunately, I won't see you next week, but I'm glad I got to write for all of you. Thank You!
P.S. If you didn't like the ending, I'm sorry, but that's how I wished it to end and ultimately it's my story. If any of you want to write a spinoff Fanfiction or spinoff Fanart that has a different ending or is different in any way, I have no problem with that, so feel free to do so.
