"John, your friend is here!" John's mother called out from the door, John dropped his fire truck and ran to the door, running as fast as his six year old legs could take him, he grinned at the little boy looking at him shyly from the other side of the door as their parents talked about how his friend would get home.

"Come on Sherlock!" John smiled opening the door and tugging at Sherlock's sleeve, the two boys ran in to John's room quickly.

"John why do you have a fire truck?" Sherlock asked frowning at it slightly.

John picked it up and held it close to his chest. "Because I like it, it's fun."

"No it's not John, they're boring!"

"Are not!" John pouted and Sherlock stuck his tongue out in return. "I like them!"

"No it's silly." Sherlock shook his head and pulled the truck from John. "Come on! Let's play detectives!"

"We played that last time though" he whined jumping up on his bed, he looked at one of his pillows and grinned throwing it at Sherlock's face and giggling madly. "Ha ha! I got you, I got you!"

"No fair," he frowned looking around for something else to throw back, instead finding one of John's swords, he jumped up on the bed and started swinging it in a crazy fashion, occasionally managing to hit John.

"No Sherlock," John laughed using his pillow to defend himself from the hard plastic.

"Captain Sherlock"

"You're not captain on my ship!" John grinned diving in and grabbing the sword of Sherlock. Soon the two were running around John's room attacking each other with anything they could grab, stopping only for Sherlock's mum to say goodbye.

John and Sherlock played like this for the rest of the day, so when dinner was over the both were tired and ready for bed. John's father and set up a small camper bed for Sherlock to sleep on and placed it next to John's bed, they both crawled into their beds, while John's parents said goodnight and closed the door.

John snuggled in to his blankets, enjoying the warmth and letting his exhaustion take over, he let out a loud yawn about to close his eyes when he heard Sherlock getting out of bed.

"What are you doing Sherlock?" He asked quietly

"I need something from my bag." Sherlock replied finding his bag in the darkness and rustling through it, a frown appeared on his face and his eyes begun to sting as tears threatened to fall. "It's not here…"

John felt nervous and slightly confused as he heard his friend sniff and let out small whimpers. "What is it? Do you need a teddy bear? I have heaps!"

"I need my nightlight" the little boy cried out, walking back over to the bed. "I want to go home…"

"Oh." John bit his lip noticing how dark it was in his room." He thought for a moment before pushing his blanket down. "You won't need it."

"I do! I need it John." Sherlock pouted starting to pack up his things.

John raced out of the bed and opened his door slightly to let in some light, he had an idea. "Come with me" he smiled grabbing Sherlock's hand and pulling him in to his bed, John made sure they were both in before throwing the blankets over both their heads. "Look now we can just pretend that it's day!"

"But we know it's not.." Sherlock sniffed. "John I need to go home."

"No you don't, we'll play a game, you need to stay" John said grabbing Sherlock's arm and pulling him close. "We're detectives hiding in a room and waiting for the criminal to come in so we can arrest them"

"That's silly John." Sherlock giggled. "We should be detectives who were kidnapped by pirates! So we're waiting for our rescue."

John laughed and nodded "Okay let's play that!" he whispered "We can't let them hear us, they might make us walk the plank."

"I'm still scared John." Sherlock whispered back moving closer to John.

"But I'm here, I'll protect you" John smiled bravely.

"You will?"

"Friends protect each other Sherlock"

"But there are monsters in the dark, nightlights keep them away" Sherlock replied not sure whether he believed John, even though he wanted to.

"So do friends. And it's only dark because the pirates locked us up. Remember?" John said Sherlock giggled and nodded, feeling better that he had his friend John with him, and after a few moments he felt safer with John then he did with his nightlight and after that it only took them both a short time to fall asleep.
