Ravenpaw hid himself from sight; the river that ran through Snake Rocks flowed around his paws. He watched for prey like always. His ears were perked to listen for the slow and almost quiet slither in case an adder tried to get him. Although he tried, there was little to no prey that he could scent.
As he quietly emerged from the river onto the rocks, he still kept an ear open to keep himself alert for anything. Still nothing caught his attention, no matter the distance he kept himself from the snake rocks themselves. But he still searched, looking harder for any sign of prey.
But a rattle of rocks caught his attention, and a sharp hiss filled the clearing. As Ravenpaw perked up his ears, and looked around. There was no cat around, but a rock that was covering a spot was moved. And a long shape was crawling across the ground, straight towards Ravenpaw with a hiss as it came closer.
Ravenpaw was frozen in place; as he watched the adder come closer; before he lept out of the way trying do dodge it, but it was quicker. So as it lunged at Ravenpaw, he quickly moved a little to the side and dealt a killing blow just behind the head. The thing went limp in his jaws, and he relaxed since he got something out of this hunt.
He checked to make sure none were coming his way, and darted off back towards camp; checking for any more prey along the way. When he got to the entrance, Tigerclaw was waiting there. Strangely, he seemed to smell a little funny; but Ravenpaw set down the adder at his paws.
Tigerclaw gave a good nod, his amber eyes were narrow. But he said nothing and just gestured over to the fresh kill pile. Ravenpaw sighed with relief, and approached the pile to set down the Adder.
Ravenpaw set it down, and the elders approached. After seeing Ravenpaw put down the Adder, Smallear approached. "A fine catch young Ravenpaw, it must've impressed Tigerclaw like that time Darkpaw caught a hawk." he meowed.
"Its Darkstripe now, geez you're getting terribly forgettable in your old age." Patchpelt meowed; the ThunderClan elder was still a little new. And Swiftkit was his son, without a doubt the two looked very similar.
Smallear glared at Patchpelt, but decided to choose a vole for his meal. Graypaw came right up beside him, holding a pretty plump rabbit. He set it down next to where Ravenpaw's adder was. "Thank goodness for the end of Leafbare," He meowed, "I managed to get something that wasn't underground in an instant."
Ravenpaw chuckled, but he said nothing. "Young Ravenpaw caught that adder." Smallear called over to Graypaw.
Sandpaw walked by. "Pfffh, as if." She snorted.
Graypaw seemed pretty happy though. "And without a bite, lucky." Graypaw nudged Ravenpaw's shoulder.
Ravenpaw looked at his paws, shuffling them uncomfortably as many cats were told the news of his catch and seeing the adder themselves. Some gave him words of encouragement. But Dustpaw said nothing, and Tigerclaw just shrugged it off. Darkstripe huffed, and turned away from them.
Graypaw grabbed a shrew, and Ravenpaw raised his head to grab a mouse. They carried it over to the apprentices den, where they sat down. Graypaw taking the spot up on the tree stump, while Ravenpaw lay down on the grass to eat his mouse.
Ravenpaw just ate there, away from the others who gossiped over the adder on the fresh kill pile. "You know, I like how you don't always go for the pride." A cat meowed from behind him.
"W-what?" he asked turning to see Whitestorm standing there.
"You know, you don't boast or proclaim that you caught it; you'd keep yourself low profile instead," he answered, "your mentor Tigerclaw wasn't that at all, but it was boosted by his mentor giving him praise for his catch. A cat who'd not take too much pride will make an honorable warrior when he caught it with someone else. But I would not let your achievements go unsaid like you are now." whitestorm then walked off without another word.
Ravenpaw watched the warrior go, stunned at how generous those words were. Tigerclaw always told him that he did nothing right, but it was cats like Yellowfang or even most of the clan that gave him hope. It was almost likeā¦
He didn't deserve it.
