Levi remembered it all. Spells. Magic. His past. And as he knelt over Eren, he thought about every wrong he had done. No wonder he had been cursed with disease these last twenty years. No wonder he had spent so much time in purgatory. He'd deserved it. He deserved all of his pain and suffering and he deserved so much more.
He didn't exactly blame the witches, Grisha and the rest. They were trying to take him down. Well, he would just have to fix his mistakes.
Looking back, Levi never had returned a soul to the cursed. Sure, there had been others he had cursed, but their souls had all been returned by witches using white magic. Others had been destroyed completely; they were doomed to an eternity in limbo. He would never forgive himself for that.
Levi had been just a simple poor boy in his past. What had happened?
He breathed in deeply, looking over Eren's lovely face, memorizing every feature. He did not know what could happen when he did what he planned to do.
Moving his hands over Eren, he pressed one hand onto Eren's heart and put the other over her forehead. He could feel her pulse and slight rise and fall of her lungs. She was alive, barely so, and she was suffering silently. He knew what it felt like to be locked in a burning sleep.
He breathed in, searching for the right way to return her. Behind him, Erwin and Petra reentered the room, and they went to stand near Hangi who was crouching on the floor. He wondered briefly where the two had disposed of the bodies.
"Have you ever returned a soul?" he asked softly. He looked over his shoulder with his cool gaze at each one of them.
Petra shook her head, glancing briefly at Jean, who was curled up tensely in his cat form, watching Eren anxiously. She was as still as death.
Levi looked back Eren and his gaze softened. She was so delicate and beautiful but she was also strong and passionate. Leaning down and removing his left hand on her forehead, he pressed his forehead to hers and closed his eyes. "You have to live, Eren," he whispered. "Don't give up on me now."
He leaned back again so that he was sitting up straight and returned his left hand to her forehead. He breathed deeply one last time and then he channeled his magic into searching for her soul. Where had he thrown it? Where had it disappeared to?
Suddenly he was plunged into complete blackness. It was everywhere and he could not see a thing. His breathing became more ragged, suddenly remembering his time spent in this wretched place. This was purgatory.
"Eren!" he called out. His voice echoed through the void.
He looked about him, turning in all directions, but still not seeing a thing. So he began running. He was nowhere and everywhere. Levi could sense the dark souls as he moved through the darkness, lurking all around him but unable to move.
He stared determinedly around when suddenly his stare caught a light, twinkling vaguely in the distance. His heart thudded painfully. "Eren!" he breathed out. He knew it was her. It had to be!
Running, he pounded across the darkness in the direction of the brilliant light that served as a lamp in this cursed place. The light drew nearer and Levi's blood pumped faster, afraid of what he would find. Or rather, what he wouldn't find.
He reached the light and paused. There were several light souls gathered here in the void. Each was lying on the floor, curling into their selves, sleeping. Around the cluster of light souls were tons and tons of dark souls. They were watching the light in desperation, but they could not move into the light.
Levi picked his way through the dark souls delicately, making sure not to touch any of them, and stepped into the ring of light. He gazed down at each of them, searching. Where was Eren?
He felt warm in the glow as he stepped carefully over each sleeping soul. He could feel the purity in each of them. Their cursed nature had wiped them of any fault. These souls were rivals to angels.
Levi then came upon one soul he did recognize. Jean. He was lying limply with one hand outstretched towards another soul. Levi froze. It was Eren. Eren and Jean were reaching for each other, not touching, but coming close. These two were entwined in the mortal world just as they were here.
Levi reached down without a second thought and placed his hand on Jean's forehead. His hand glowed green for a brief second and then Jean was gone. The spot where his soul had lain dimmed and Eren soul reacted in discomfort. A frown appeared over Eren's angelic face and her fingers twitched for a moment. Slowly, she curled the hand back to her chest, cradling it there.
"Eren," he said softly. This time his voice held no echo at all. It landed flatly.
She did not react to his voice.
He kneeled down to sit beside her and reached forward. Levi paused, noticing the slight difference between their souls. Hers shone with brilliance, almost blinding, but Levi's own hand was dull. Not black like the dark souls but not shining in any way. He was like a burnt-out light bulb.
Blinking once, he pushed the thought aside and moved his hand to Eren's head and allowed his magic to grow and then, just like Jean, Eren disappeared from view, leaving a darkened spot in her place. He breathed out, feeling a little lighter, and stood. Levi had fully intended to return, but he stopped short, looking around at the other souls gathered in the light. There were about twenty others.
He made a snap decision. He would free these souls too.
Eren inhaled sharply, gasping for air in desperation. She could feel something heavy on her chest and forehead and she fought her blurry vision for a moment, trying to clear it. She gasped. Levi was the one leaning over her so heavily, pressing his weight on to those two points. His eyes were closed and he was still.
"Levi?" she said shakily. Her limbs were tingling as the pain left her body. Just a moment ago, she had been engulfed with the sting of the disease. But now, it was completely gone.
She glanced around the room. "Hangi?" she said as she noticed the girl on the floor. "What…?"
"He returned your soul," Hangi said in awe. Her gaze was on Levi, wide eyed. "And Jean's."
"Does that mean—"
"He took away your curse," Petra said. Her expression was hard to read. She looked more worried than anything.
Eren's breath caught in her throat as she peered up at Levi. He had taken it away and given back her life. After all this time…
Suddenly his eyes fluttered and her eyes were caught on his. "Levi," she breathed. She reached up with her right hand, placing along his strong jaw line.
He blinked slowly at her, frowning, like he was trying to figure her out. Eren let a smile grow on her lips before she pushed herself up slowly and out of Levi's grip on her forehead. Instead, his hand slipped into her hair.
She glanced briefly at the others, who were still watching, but she decided that she didn't care. Eren took her chance and pressed her lips against Levi's. He responded immediately. His mouth moved against hers. She gasped into his lips. Levi was perfect. Why hadn't she seen this before?
He pulled away suddenly and Eren looked at him curiously. He frowned, looking down at his hands in her hair. "Eren," he said, "I love you." Levi looked up then, right into her eyes.
Eren opened her mouth to reply but his expression turned sad and he looked away again. "I'm not good for you," he continued. "All of the things I did to you, to everyone the past…" He removed his hands from her hair and pried Eren's hands away from his face. Levi looked at her seriously. "We shouldn't do this." He was holding her wrists, pressing her hands to her sides.
"You're horrible," Eren said angrily. She yanked her arms from his. His eyebrows shot up in surprise. "I can love whoever I want, you idiot. And I love you, okay? So you're just going to have to deal with it." She grabbed a hold on his shirt, pulled him forward roughly, and kissed him.
He laughed into her lips, disrupting the short kiss, and pulled away. He pressed his forehead to hers. Eren glanced at the others and found them whispering to each other. She wondered what they were talking about. "We have voyeurs," she told him.
Levi smiled and moved away a bit and looked back at the three. Behind them, on the couch, Jean groaned. He was fully in his human form now. Eren realized that he would never again be a cat. Suddenly she gasped. "I'm not cursed!" It was finally hitting her. "My skin," she started as she pulled her hands away from Levi to look at them.
"You're free," he said.
She kissed him a third time.
I think we have 5 or more chapters left perhaps?
