Neve hated it whenever Chris was sent away on a mission that she and her team weren't involved in. She always ended up feeling awful from not being able to sleep properly through sheer worry alone and would constantly have a sense of doom filling her up that made her feel physically sick. But now, lying on her bed in the hotel room; Neve felt like she had several major organs ripped out of her. She felt like she had a huge gaping hole in her middle. Neve felt numb. And when Neve felt numb, her mind tended to wander and she would eventually end up daydreaming or passing out. She could feel herself spacing out.
Dozens of people watched as Neve went charging toward Chris at full speed before she quite literally launched herself at him. She clung on to his muscular frame with her arms around his neck and her legs gripped firmly around his waist. Chris had already braced himself for Neve flying at him; she did it every time they met each other at the airport so he knew what was coming. The other people who were waiting at the baggage carousel looked on as Neve and Chris embraced and kissed each other like they were in a romantic movie. It earned a few "aw's" from some of the people and a few strange looks from some which the couple ignored. They were far too engrossed in each other to care about anything else.
'How was Singapore?' Neve asked Chris after they eventually peeled themselves apart.
'It'd be a great place to go on vacation but, that mission. It was awful.'
'Yeah I read the report. All those school kids I mean…'
Chris and Neve fell silent for a brief moment. Sometimes there were some aspects of their job that really should not be thought about. The pair stayed quiet about it, they both knew how horrible it was. They didn't need reminding about all the horrible things they both come across in their line of work it only made them angry and upset.
Chris had been in Singapore uncovering some nasty goings on at an elite school known as the Marhawa Academy; a school notorious for its secrecy, completely shut off from the outside world where its students could study in absolute peace. He had been away for a while. But Neve had been away too. She just got back from Jordan with her team a day before Chris did. They had been on a mission investigating a new weapon dealer on the scene after receiving a few tips from some sources but after a few days of following him around and tapping his phone and e-mail; they got absolutely nothing.
Chris and Neve tried to spend as much time together as they possibly could; it even got to the point where they would prepare everything in advance so they wouldn't have to leave the house unless it was absolutely necessary. They would make sure they had plenty of food, drink and cigarettes in the house as well as order takeaways if they fancied one. The time off they did have together was usually spent in bed, watching television, eating junk food, drinking beer and having sex which they considered exercise. As well as catching up on their sleep which only ever happened when they were together.
Neve shook herself back in to the real world. Her eyes felt hot and itchy from all the crying she had been doing. Knowing that lying on her bed doing nothing wouldn't help anything, Neve decided to freshen up a bit before she went and got dinner with Piers. She grabbed a small toiletries bag from out of her case and searched inside for some eye drops she always kept in there hoping they would at least take the sting away. Then she applied a little bit more make up to replace what she had already cried off. Neve didn't really feel like going to get dinner with Piers anymore, she could have quite happily stayed in her room and ordered room service and just done nothing till she could go back to the hospital tomorrow morning as soon as they allowed visitors.
Piers and Neve didn't really talk much about Chris or what happened. Piers was still on his quest to find a good steak outside of the US so he was sat cutting in to a huge medium-rare Sirloin while Neve was chasing meatballs around her plate of spaghetti with her fork. She knew what she needed; to be sat up in bed with some comfort food like a huge bucket of fried chicken watching some crappy TV. It kind of daunted her just exactly how much she depended on Chris. It wasn't like her to depend on a man at all, but she needed Chris on so many levels to essentially keep her sane and feeling human.
Neve requested the waiter bring over another bottle of red wine as Piers and Neve had already drank the first one they ordered. They could polish of this second bottle before retiring for the night so they were up bright and early to get to the hospital as soon as possible. Piers looked absolutely exhausted by now and so did Neve who definitely wasn't herself as she turned down desert. The two just sat for a while drinking their wine with a little bit of chatter every now and then. Eventually, they parted ways and made their way to their rooms to get some rest.
The hotel room's door slowly closed on its own as Neve shuffled her way inside. She just stripped off her clothing where she stood and yanked an oversized shirt out of her case to sleep in. Neve just took her make up off with a cleansing wipe instead of going through her whole nightly routine and quickly climbed in to bed; turning the TV on using the remote sat on the bedside table. She'd be surprised if she got any sleep at all but she was really, really tired after rushing around all day trying to get over here on Christmas Eve of all days. The alarm clock on the bedside table with it fluorescent green digits read it was just after eleven at night. Neve hoped she could get a few hours sleep at least but she wasn't expecting it.
'Wha… where… ugh the hell?'
Neve stirred as something loud and annoying woke her abruptly. Her phone was ringing somewhere in her room but in her sleepy state she couldn't quite figure out where it was exactly. Then she remembered she had dropped her handbag on the floor next to her suitcase when she got back in last night and just left it there. She reluctantly slid out of bed and shuffled over to her bag, hooking it up off the floor so she could find her phone. The clock read on it "07:33am" from what Neve could read as she blinked and squinted at the screen. She didn't recognise the number that was calling but answered it anyway.
'Neve Senna.' She slurred in to the phone as she answered. A man had started to talk to her with a thick Eastern European accent.
'Ah Ms. Senna yes. It is Doctor Moroz, we spoke yesterday yes. I thought I ring you first and not your colleagues, Mr. Redfield appears to have gone missing.'
'Excuse me but, appears… to have gone missing?' Neve questioned.
'Yes. Mr Redfield was in his room during the nurses morning rounds, he was waking up so I went in to check him over, he seemed very confused I think maybe amnesia from head trauma. Then when nurses do the breakfast round half hour later, he was no longer in his room. He has not been seen anywhere else in the hospital. We can only assume he is no longer here.'
'Okay Doctor, thank you for calling. I can handle this from here.'
Neve ended the call. Two seconds later, she was calling Piers.
'Piers. Chris has gone missing. I got a call off Doc Moroz now.'
Piers sounded like Neve had just woken him up too.
'Missing? What do you mean missing?'
'Like missing as in missing. No longer where he should be missing, we have no idea where he's gone missing. He's AWOL Piers, they've searched the hospital for him.'
'Ah shit we'd better tell the local authorities and head office, then I suppose get out there and start looking. Did the doctor say anything else?'
'Yeah he said Chris had sort of woken up, the doctor thinks he has amnesia.'
'Neve we need to find him quick. I'll call the police, you call HQ then we'll meet up shortly yeah?'
'Sure thing Piers.'
They ended the call. Neve felt like screaming, or putting her head through a wall. She could feel a migraine coming on and now she started to feel stressed and jittery. Chris had just gone AWOL in Eastern Europe and if he did have amnesia like the Doctor suspected; then God only knew what was going on in Chris's head.
