Chapter 20: The Aftermath

Everyone filed outside slowly. A G.U.N. jeep was parked by the exit. Omega clambered into it, holding onto his severed arm. Rouge hopped in after him. Emily sat in the back of the jeep, feet dangling over the side. Her eyes widened when she saw them.

Andrews shook his head. He looked at Shadow. "Couldn't beat him, huh?"

Shadow glared at the ground. "No."

Emily stared at the little fox in the blue hedgehog's arms. She could see the blood dripping into the dirt. "Is he…okay?"

Sonic looked up at her, his green eyes sorrowful. He was quiet for a long moment. "Tails will be okay," he answered, voice hoarse. "Just have to hurry home, to get him some help."

Emily nodded. "Umm…you're Sonic the Hedgehog aren't you? The Hero of Mobius?"

"Yep. I'm the Hero of Mobius." He walked away from her slowly. "Some hero I am," he muttered to himself. "Can't even protect one kid…"

Sally flinched as the blue hedgehog walked past her. She had heard everything he just said. She looked around for Amy, and found her seated on a log a few feet away.

Amy held Cream in her arms, and Cheese hovered beside her. Tears streamed from her eyes as she watched the little rabbit.

Sally watched her friend in silence. She was at a loss for words.

"I promised I'd protect her, Sally." Amy sobbed quietly. "I…I broke my promise!"
