Sorry I haven't updated in a while, but this is the last chapter, and I wanted to make it perfect. Enjoy!
Chapter Nineteen
Alec, Isabelle, Jace, Magnus, and the Inquisitor crept slowly, sticking to the shadows of the trees as they observed the fort.
"See that dark spot over there?" the Inquisitor pointed, "That's where a group of prisoners once tried to escape. The place there was then fortified. I bet that's where they're keeping Clary right now."
"So we can use an exploding rune and get Clary out of there," Magnus' eyes sparkled. Jace glared at him.
"I thought the entire purpose of this mission was stealth and silence," Jace said, "Besides, it's not like we have a flying rune to get us all up there."
"We'll have to sneak in, then," the Inquisitor decided. Jace rolled his eyes.
"With the entire place jam-packed with demons, I have a hard time seeing that happening," Jace said.
"Clary taught me a rune that could disguise a person as a demon. It wears off in a few hours, though," Isabelle offered helpfully.
"A few hours is more than enough," Jace said, holding out his hand for Isabelle to draw on.
LINE BREAK
Clary was utterly exhausted. But after hours of yelling at the demon guards, most people would be exhausted. In fact, Clary wasn't even if the demons could hear, but it felt good to release some of the pent up frustration and have something to do.
She shook out her hair and scanned the room, even though she already memorized every crevice…or she thought she had. She focused on a blemish she had never noticed before. She moved slowly towards it, making sure the demons didn't notice her, but they didn't even turn around, apparently focused on guarding the cell, but not monitoring the prisoner inside the cell. She reached the blemish and her finger pushed it when Clary realized it was a sort of button. A slab of the brick slid out, revealing a sort of drawer like box with a stele. Clary began to feel hope again, a pleasant warm feeling that coursed through her veins.
LINE BREAK
Jace and the others strode into the compound looking like they totally belonged, which thankfully was easy since demons aren't really fully developed in the facial expressions department.
"Where have you been?" a particularly nasty-looking demon hissed at Isabelle in a demonic language that thankfully Jace and others understood.
"Out checking the borders. We thought we saw something," Isabelle responded. She then kept on walking.
Jace was surprised at the lack of interaction with other demons, but that was probably because the ones that weren't training for war were too self-absorbed to take any notice of others. He had to change that, though. Jace needed to ask where Clary was. But thankfully, that didn't happen. He overheard a few demons talking and stopped, pretending to be interested in a wall.
"Have you heard about the prisoner?" the demon was a sort of centipede-like creature was clicking it's pincers excitedly as it talked.
"The Lord's sister?" apparently demons gossiped amongst each other, too.
"She's held upstairs, at cell 3B," the demon continued to chatter, but Jace already had all the information he needed to know.
"Come on," he made his way up the steps as the others followed.
LINE BREAK
The popping of the lock felt extremely loud to Clary, but the demons didn't even turn their heads. She stuck to the shadows, creeping out. A guard demon sniffed. Clary kept on moving. It was one of the first rules in escaping- when people show suspicion, get out fast, and whatever you do, don't freeze up. She made it to the hall and around the corner, barely holding in her sigh of relief, because she knew that if she did sight, the demons might sense her. She made her way lightly down the hallway, and a light in a room caught her eye. Clary slipped inside the room and gasped at what she saw.
LINE BREAK
"We've been circling this place for hours," Isabelle complained. Alec raised an eyebrow.
"No need to be dramatic, Izzy," he said. Isabelle glared at him.
"My rune is fading," she said by way of explanation.
"Oh," was Alec's response, and then he added, "We should probably redo them now…ya know, so we don't get mauled by bloodthirsty demons."
"Ya think?" Jace asked sarcastically. Magnus opened the door to a room.
"After you," he said graciously.
LINE BREAK
Clary gaped at the two objects mounted on the wall. A translucent wall of shimmering, crackling electricity surrounded the Mortal Cup and the Mortal Sword. Clary quickly undid the protection with a rune, grabbing the two objects, and turned to leave, but the door, which she had closed after her, was cracked open.
"After you," a familiar voice said, and Jace entered the room.
LINE BREAK JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT
"I still can't believe you got the Cup and the Sword," Isabelle shook her head.
"It was pure luck," Clary shrugged it off, "And speaking of that, we need to find a way to hide these before we go out."
"There might be a—" the Inquisitor's voice was cut off by a piercing alarm that appeared to ring out from the walls.
"I'm guessing they found out about your disappearing act," Magnus said dryly as the corridor began to crowd with demons. Unfortunately, with no time to redo the disguise rune, the group was exposed, and was immediately spotted by the demons.
"Ithuriel," Clary muttered and the rest of the group did the same and they advanced towards the demons.
Clary and the others fought there way to the door, but Jace, who was taking care of a particularly nasty winged one, didn't notice a scorpion-like demon approaching him. The Inquisitor's eyes widened.
"Jace, watch out!" she dove for him and shielded him with her body as the demon lunged forward.
Jace stared at the Inquisitor for a moment, not comprehending. He raised his head to the scorpion-like demon and charged.
The group finally made it to the exit and ran out. Clary felt thankful that Valentine made her train with all those endurance exercises. She could keep up with the rest of the team and they soon distanced themselves from the prison.
"Uh," Alec started, "I don't know how to break this to you, but I think we're almost at the lake."
"What?" Clary stopped short, turning to face him, "We were heading the wrong direction the entire time?!"
"Actually, Magnus and I formulated a plan to defeat Jonathan and it involved the Lake of Tears," Alec explained sheepishly, "I didn't have time to tell you. We're going to summon the Angel Raziel."
Clary almost choked.
My POV (Just for fun, also cuz this is getting way too long for me)
So, they summon Angel Raziel and they try to get him to kill Jonathan, but Raziel's just like "You dare use me for your own purposes?! Die foolish mortals!"
But then, they convince him it would save the world and stuff, and then Jonathan shows up cuz he was tracking them and he finally found them (cuz he's just that awesome), and tries to kill them and Clary gets hurt, so Jace gets mad and then manages to stab Jonathan with the Mortal Sword, and then Angel Raziel decides that it was for the good of humankind and Shadowhunter-kind to kill Jonathan, so he does the "Angel Saliva turns into Acid" stuff, spitting on Jonathan, and killing him (I never did figure out how that worked), and then melts back into the lake. The group makes it back to Idris, and finds out that the demons have magically disappeared, so everything returns to normal, and Jace and Clary return to the Institute. Jace asks Clary out, and they officially become a couple, and then Magnus kisses Alec.
