025. Silence
A silence of a thousand seconds grew like a wall between them. A silence full of 'I love you' and 'I loved you'. A silence dripping with 'I hate you', 'I can't have you anymore' and 'I want this to work'. It was painful, bitter, but oh so quiet.
She didn't need to say anything; he felt the force of her pain in her shadowed, withdrawn, lilac eyes. The energy slowly fell away from his.
"You're... you're serious?" His voice seemed to come from him like it was another person's. He felt bile rising in his throat.
She only nodded, moving those pearl eyes that shone in the moonlight away from him. The moonlight only seemed to illuminate more pronounced veins and broken blood vessels tonight.
"You... you want to break up?" He almost whispered the words, as though they were poison. "Why?" It was the only word he could push out with some force before his throat closed up in a spasm.
"Because I need to have a life for me, Naruto. I need to have a life that I can look back on and realise that I was more than just someone's wife, someone's mother. I need to lol back and see that I've done things - great things!"
"And you can't have that with me?"
She still couldn't look at him.
"Why?"
"Do you remember that A-Class mission I went on, last month?"
A sinking knot fell in his stomach. He nodded. He knew what this was.
"You got so angry that I took it, and it wasn't for the first time. It made me realise that... perhaps we aren't so perfect for each other."
"No- no..."
"But I want to do things like that for years yet. Maybe even longer. I like being a ninja, I like using my skills, and going out with teammates," her voice was more passionate than he'd heard in a while, "and are you okay with me doing all that?"
She tilted her head as she looked into his eyes again. They were slightly red but still managed to penetrate him with that searching stare.
"Yes!"
He knew that he'd answered too quickly. She knew it, too. Her lips curved into the faintest of smiles. Not a happy smile, but a sad one, decorated with slowly made realisations and a heart half-broken in two.
"See?"
It was him who looked away this time.
"That's why I can't do this anymore." She took a shuddering breath. "You will always be a part of my life, Naruto. A big part. I will always love you in some way. But we've grown. And we've grown in different ways, and I'm not sure if we work together so well anymore."
"I can change!"
That smile, that smile that was killing him.
"Perhaps you will. But for right now, we just want such different things."
She gathered her bag and her jacket from next to her and leant over the coffee table separating them to kiss his cheek.
"Goodbye, Naruto. Goodbye."
He never imagined this would happen. He never even dreamed that she would be doing this to him. His heart seemed to be beating out of his mouth. He felt like he needed to be sick. Watching as she walked away, his thoughts were all a muddle, but he knew one thing: he'd never give up until she was back in his arms.
Yeah, well. You know. I'm evil.
