Chapter Twenty-One: Terry's Threats
A/N: Hello! I finally managed an update for this. Hope you like it!
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life. It goes on." -Robert Frost
With finals week finally behind him, Terry was glad he could finally relax relax. He knew a bunch if his friends were out partying at underage parties, but he was volunteering at the hospital. I have an interesting idea of fun, he decided as he walked around, making sure patients in the waiting room were filling out their forms correctly. He smiled at an elderly lady and helped her hold the pen. "Please," he said politely. "Allow me to help you Ma'am."
"Thank you," she smiled. "I appreciate it."
"It's no trouble at all." Terry crouched down and helped her shaking hand as she wrote down her information. He usually preferred to work with kids, but he knew an oncologist who'd asked for his help over the weekend. Something about them being short-handed because of the graduation season. He stood up when she was finished and took the clipboard. "I can take this to the nurse for you."
"That you very much."
"Anytime." He walked over to the front desk and handed off the clipboard. He turned around and ran into the last person he'd expect to see.
"Oh...hi Terry," Seth said shocked. "What...what are you doing here?"
"I'm friends with one of the doctors and he asked me to help out since they're a little short-handed this weekend."
"Oh. Well, ok then."
"What're you doing here?"
"Oh, I'm just meeting someone."
"Interesting place to chose as a meeting place," Terry replied, crossing his arms.
"Yeah...hey, Mia isn't here too, is she?"
"No."
"Oh, ok. So, there's really no reason to tell her I was here, right?"
"I'm not really in the habit of lying to my sister," Terry lied.
"Well it's not lying if you just don't say. Right?"
"I guess."
"Great. So, don't tell Mia? Yes?"
"Yes," Terry agreed. He walked away, mind racing. Why is Mia's boyfriend here? He's...meeting someone? Terry felt his heart drop. He knew he was probably jumping to conclusions, but given his track record with Mia's past boyfriends, one in particular, he felt like his paranoia was justified. He found a nurse helping him cover the waiting room and walked over to him. "Hey."
"Hey Terry. You excited for med school?"
"Yeah, listen. There's a guy over here. I need you to keep a eye on."
The nurse looked over and nodded. "Damn, he is fine."
"Stop. He's my sister's boyfriend."
"Shoot. So why do you want me to keep an eye on him?"
"I just have a feeling. Can you tell me if he goes anywhere or if anyone shows up?"
"Yeah sure."
"Thanks." Terry went back to his business, glancing over at Seth every once in a while. Eventually though, he got so bogged down with helping patients that he didn't have time to watch him. Nearly an hour later, his nurse friend came over and tapped him on the shoulder. "Yeah?"
"Your mystery guy just had a girl come and see him."
Terry looked around. He saw a beautiful woman about Mia's age sitting with Seth. She gave him a hug and played with his hair. Terry glared as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. He acted like he was talking a picture of a poster on the wall, but actually took a picture of the woman hugging Seth. The woman kissed his forehead and. Terry made sure he got a picture of it. He turned away, putting his phone in his pocket. He grabbed a random clipboard and walked over to Seth. "Excuse me."
Seth and the girl stopped hugging. "Uh...Terry..."
"The doctor has asked me to run a few tests. If you will follow me please."
Seth let go of the woman who smiled at him. "I'll be waiting right here, Sethy."
"Yeah, yeah," he murmured. He followed Terry, who led him down a deserted hall. Terry suddenly grabbed him and pulled him into a closet. "What the hell dude?!"
"Took the words right out if my mouth," Terry said. "Why are you meeting girls here?"
"In my defense it was only one."
"One who isn't my sister!"
"Terry, look, it isn't like that-"
"Then tell me what it's like."
"If I do then you'll tell Mia. I just don't want her to know."
"Why?!"
Seth sighed. "Because...I'm sick. Really sick. I don't want her to know, because..."
"Because..."
"Because she might break up with me."
Terry shook his head. "Do you really think Mia is so shallow she'd leave you just like that?"
"I-"
"Because if that's what you think, then I don't want you anywhere near her!"
"Terry-"
"Don't," Terry warned him. He took his phone out of his pocket. "I have all the evidence I need. You're keeping secrets from Mia. Ether you tell her the truth, or I tell her you're cheating on her and show her the pictures I took."
"You're black mailing me?!"
"Just think of it as brotherly protection."
"You're a psychopath."
"Maybe," Terry shrugged. "But I'm a psychopath who loves his older sister. You have one week to consider it. And chose wisely."
Seth stayed where he was as he watched the younger Watanabe leave. He sighed again and leaned against the wall. He knew even if Terry's methods were a little haywire, his heart was in the right place. It actually made Seth kind of glad Mia had a brother who cared about her so much. He rubbed his head and ran his fingers through his hair. He'd always been so proud of it, due to it's sheer volume. Would Mia still love me if I was bald? he wondered as he walked back to the waiting room. I don't want to burden her with this, but Terry is right. I have to be honest with her.
"If only I knew for sure that the truth wouldn't end our relationship."
