"So..." Finn let out a shaky breath as he bent down on one knee. He could hear his heart pounding in his chest and feel butterflies fluttering around in his stomach. "Rachel Berry..." He looked up into his girlfriend's, well hopefully soon-to-be-fiancee's eyes as he opened the ring box in his hands to reveal a beautiful and expensive engagement ring. "Will you marry me?" He had finally said it. Despite the fact he still had to wait for her response, he still let a sigh of relief escape his lips.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears. He hoped they were tears of joy though he couldn't be sure. She had an unreadable expression on her face that made Finn's heart beat ten times faster, if that was even possible. She stood without speaking for what felt like forever to Finn, just looking down at him. Eventually she opened her mouth.
"I'm sorry." Rachel mumbled quietly whilst she slowly started backing away from him. "But... I can't." She had a sad look on her face. The tears in her eyes tipped over the edge and slowly rolled down her face. She seemed genuinely upset but she was a great actress so how could he be sure? Rachel turned around and ran away from him, now crying fully, leaving him alone and still kneeling on the ground.
Finn's heart sank deep within the pit of his stomach. She had said no. He looked down at himself in self pity. He was dressed in his finest suit and holding a beautiful diamond ring in his hand. He thought this would be perfect, one of the happiest days of his life. He was clearly wrong. A few drops of rain fell on him as he stood up, they quickly escalated to pouring rain. He used this as a great way to mask the tears that were falling down his face.
Finn woke in a hot sweat. He had been having nightmares like this ever since he picked out the engagement ring. Some were just like this one, Rachel had unexpectedly said no; others Rachel just laughed in his face. Each rejection had a different scenario but felt equally as brutal. When he had decided to ask Rachel to marry him, he felt nervous, scared, worried, happy, but the most dominant emotion was excitement. Now nerves and excitement were equal as his future fantasy became a reality.
Today was the day he had been waiting for for weeks. The day he had been anticipating and dreading at the same time. The day he was going to ask the love of his life, Rachel Berry, to marry him. He was sure this was what he wanted. In fact, he was 110% sure that he wanted to marry Rachel. He had never been more sure of anything in his life. The only thought that dissuaded him a little was the possiblity that Rachel didn't want the same thing.
The nightmares he was experiencing spoke for themselves. Somewhere in his subconscious (and conscious at that), he was terrified with the thought of Rachel saying no. She was the love of his life, but what if he wasn't the love of hers?
He pushed those negative thoughts out of his mind as he climbed out of bed. He lifted his phone from his bed-side table and checked if he had any messages. Other than his Mom saying goodnight to him the night before, he was text-free. He opened his texts with Rachel and wrote her a message saying,
'Good morning, Beautiful. I hope you slept well. I can't wait for our date tonight. Xxxxx -Finn'
He put his phone back down and went to take a quick shower. When he got back Rachel had replied to say,
'Morning, Handsome. I slept very well Thank You. I can't wait either :) I'll see you tonight. I love you. Xxxxxxxx -Rachel'
Finn smiled and locked his phone. It was time to make sure everything was ready for tonight.
~That night~
That night, Rachel looked at herself in the mirror for the twentieth time. Everytime she saw Finn she wanted to look her best, even though he said she always looked beautiful. Her small black dress hugged her curves in the best way and made her legs look longer than usual. She was pleased with the way she looked.
At the time when Finn was supposed to pick her up, there was a knock on the door that she presumed was Finn. However, when she answered it, she was surprised to find Kurt stood there instead.
"Kurt? What are you doing here? Is Finn ok?" Rachel asked. A sudden sweep of panic rushed through Rachel at the thought that something could have happened to Finn.
"Relax." Kurt said in a cheery tone. "Finn's fine."
"Then why are you here?" Rachel frowned before adding, "Not that you aren't welcome."
"Don't worry about it. Finn has a surprise for you and I must take you to it." Kurt said with a smille.
"A surprise?" Rachel looked excited at the mention of a surprise. "What is it?"
"Well it wouldn't be a surprise if I told you now, would it?" Kurt said in an obvious tone. "Come on, we should be going."
Kurt grabbed Rachel's hand and dragged her out of her apartment. When they got downstairs, Rachel found that Finn had hired a car to drive her to the mystery destination of the surprise. Rachel got more and more excited by the second, much to the joy of her and annoyance of Kurt.
The majority of the fifteen minute drive consisted of Rachel questioning Kurt on any details she could find about the surprise. Unfortunately for Rachel, Kurt's lips were sealed. Other than the occasional smirks and chuckles that Kurt gave to Rachel, his interaction with her was limited. She knew it was because if he spoke, he would give something away. To be safe, he refused to open his mouth at all.
Rachel enjoyed the mystery behind this. Finn had told her that they were going to dinner at a restaurant, similar to the date they went on every other week. This, however, did not happen every other week which made Rachel curious about what Finn had planned. She ran over different ideas and scenarios in her head but none seemed plausible and they often seemed far-fetched. Rachel was rather imaginitive after all. Eventually, she simply gave up and looked forward to the surprise.
Finally, the car pulled up outside a building that Rachel recognised as Finn's apartment building. Rachel frowned and looked to Kurt who was trying to conceal a smile. He said nothing as he climbed from the car and opened Rachel's door.
"The surprise is in Finn's apartment?" Rachel asked when Kurt started walking towards the door.
Kurt didn't answer, only led her to the elevator and clicked a button before Rachel could see. The doors closed and up they went. Rachel knew by how long they were stood there that they were quite high in the building. She figured she must be near Finn's pent-house when the elevator stopped with a 'ding'. The doors slid open and Kurt walked without a word to the stairs. Rachel followed close behind with curiosity flowing through her.
When they got to the stairs that led up to the top of the building, Kurt stopped and faced her. He pulled something from behind his back with a smile.
"I need to put this on you." He said as he held up a blindfold.
"Why?"
"Finn's orders." Kurt stated simply. He turned Rachel around and tied it around her head so that her eyes were covered.
When that was done, Kurt carefully helped her up the stairs. She regreted wearing heels when she realised how difficult it was to walk without being able to see. After 5 minutes of walking up a small flight of stairs (it took so long because of Rachel's heels), they finally stopped.
"Are you ready?" Kurt asked from the side of her. She nodded slowly and heard a door open.
She felt a cool breeze hit her and realised she was on the roof. It made her feel a little cautious standing on top of a very high building in a blindfold but she hid her fear well.
"You can take off your blindfold now." She heard Finn's dreamy voice from in front of her. She carefully removed the material, making sure she didn't ruin her hair of make up.
Her mouth dropped open a little when she saw what was in front of her. The whole roof was lit only by hundreds of candles carefully lay out everywhere. The flames were swaying slightly in the gentle breeze. Rose petals were scattered infront of her, leading up to Finn. Finn was stood in a beautiful navy blue suit, with his hair carefully styled instead of in the cute messy way it usually was. He looked more handsome than she had ever seen him.
Rachel turned around to Kurt who smiled and turned around, closing the door behind him. When Rachel turned back to Finn, a single, long-stemmed red rose had appeared in his hand.
"This is for you." He said as he extended his arm towards her.
"What is all of this?" Rachel asked with a smile as she walked to accept the rose.
"Your surprise." Finn pulled his famous half smile.
"It's beautiful." Rachel smiled as she took the rose. She wasn't only talking about the rose, she was talking about everything.
"You only deserve the best." Finn always knew what to say to flatter her. "You look beautiful, as always."
"Thank you." Rachel smiled and shyly looked at the floor, he still had that effect on her.
"Do you remember this place?" Finn asked as he looked around the candle-lit roof top.
Rachel nodded with a small smile. She looked around also before saying, "It's where we came on our first date."
"It's been one of my favourite places ever since." Finn took her hand in his. "Because it reminds me of you, and how much I love you."
"I love you too." Rachel smiled and looked into Finn's eyes.
"Since we've been together, I think it's fair to say that we've been through some rough patches." Finn said and Rachel nodded in agreement. "But we've always got through them because we love each other."
Rachel smiled at Finn's words but couldn't help wondering what this was about. Finn had always tried to be romantic but he usually had clear intentions. Now, however, the purpose of her being here, other than Finn to tell her he loved her, was unclear.
"I've heard the saying 'everything happens for a reason' but I've never really believed it," Finn continued. "until I met you. It's like everything that's happened in my life has led me to you. Whenever we've gone through dark times, you've been like this beacon of light to guide us to safety."
"It wasn't just me Finn." Rachel told him as she squeezed his hand. "We've been the beacon of light."
"No, it's you." Finn corrected with his infamous half smile. "You are a star, Rachel. You shine brighter than anything else in the universe, which is why I think I need to purchase some sunglasses." Rachel frowned at Finn so he explained, "If you look at bright things for too long then they damage your eyes."
"Right." Rachel nodded with a giggle.
"I know that you don't believe it, but you are perfect in every way. You're the most beautiful girl I've ever met. You're funny, kind, confident, sexy, ambitious, caring, extremely talented, the list is endless. But for some bizarre reason, you've let me love you." Finn looked down. "I'm just this goofy, dork who isn't good at anything other than making grilled cheese sandwiches and eating pizza."
"Thats's not true." Rachel assured him.
"I never said I don't like being a dork." Finn smiled. "But you can do so much better."
"I don't want to do better." Rachel but her hand on Finn's cheek lightly. "I love you."
"And I love you." Finn bent down and kissed Rachel's lips gently. "Since we've been together, my life has been so much better. It's like I have a purpose, and that purpose is to love you, and try to make you love me even half as much."
"Well you've already succeeded." Rachel told him with a smile.
"I've always thought that I've been happy in life. I've always had friends, family, money, food, and a roof over my head. I thought that was all I needed. But I was wrong. I was missing the thing most important in life, and that thing was love. But you fill that gap and it's true to say you complete me. Over the past few weeks, I've realised that I've never really been happy. I'm only truly happy when I'm with you.
"You make me happier than I thought was possible. You make me feel invincible, like anything is possible. I love that feeling and I want to make you feel the same. Which is what I'm going to ask you."
Finn knelt on one knee infront of Rachel. He pulled the ring box from his pocket and opened it. Rachel looked at him in shock. Her eyes filled up with tears and her hand covered her mouth in surprise. Finn hoped this wasn't his dream coming true and hoped for the best.
"This ring is a promise. A promise that I will always love you with all my heart. A promise that I will spend every minute, of every day, of every year, for the rest of my life, trying to make you love me as much as I love you. A promise that I will make you feel like the happiest, luckiest, most loved girl on this planet. So Rachel Barbra Berry, will you marry me?"
Rachel moved her hands to reveal a huge smile. Finn felt like a weight had been removed from his shoulders, just by the look on her face. His heart was beating fast and to say he had butterflies was an understatement. His butterflies had butterflies. He had never seen Rachel quiet for so long, she always spoke a lot more than she should and sometime barely let him fit a word in.
Eventually, Rachel found her voice and let a small, "Yes."
"Yes?" Finn asked for confirmation.
"Yes." Rachel said louder this time and with a huge smile on her face.
Finn took the ring and put it easily onto Rachel's finger. He took her in his arms and lifted her up, spinning her around. Rachel giggled until Finn put her down. She wrapped her arms around his neck and attacked his mouth with her own. She gave him the most passionate kiss she could and he did the same. Finally they needed to come up for air so reluctantly seperated.
"I love you so much." Rachel whispered.
"I love you more."
"If you say so." Rachel joked before giving him one last kiss. In the past few weeks that had become a joke of theirs that they said almost every day. All their friends found it sweet but they had a serious competition going on.
"My brothers engaged!" They heard Kurt yell from behind.
"Yeah he is!" Finn shouted and both Finn and Rachel invited Kurt in for a celebratory hug.
