Chapter 21- To Everything
Peter and Micky entered the hospital room to find Mike in a death grip from the youngest of the group. "You're alive." Davy screamed happily, tears threatening to fall down his face.
"Yeah, but I won't be for long if you keep squeezing me like that." Mike said, patting Davy on the shoulder in a rare form of affection.
"Sorry," Davy said, stepping back. "I'm just so glad to see you alive."
"Yeah, it's good to be back." Mike sighed, leaning up against his pillows. He looked out the window to see a sliver of pink was showing through the clouds.
"It's great to have you back." Micky said, sitting down on the bed. Mike smiled, looking up at the drummer.
"Did it really happen?" Mike asked Micky. "Or was it just a fever dream?"
"Oh boy, do we have a lot to tell you." Micky said, "But we should probably wake the girls up to help us tell it…at least Lizzy." Peter nodded and made his way out. A few seconds later he re-emerged with a girl that looked vaguely familiar to Mike.
"Oh Lord." Mike whispered, sucking his breath in.
"Mike this is-" Peter said starting to make interdictions.
"Elizabeth." Mike finished. Lizzy giggled.
"Kind of… I go by Lizzy." She said, going over to the bed and holding out her hand. "Nice to finally meet you Mike."
"Likewise… I think." Mike said, taking it.
"Right storytime!" Davy said, going over to Lizzy and taking her hand. Mike rolled his eyes. "What?" Davy asked confused.
"We can't take him anywhere can we?" Micky asked rhetorically. Peter laughed.
"Guys, what's going on?" A voice asked softly. All five heads turned to see Maggie rubbing sleep out of her eyes. "Is Mike alright?" She asked.
"Maggie?" Mike whispered, staring at her. Maggie looked at him and smiled, hurrying over and pushing Micky out of the way in her eagerness, grasping Mike's hand.
"Careful." Micky laughed as he backed away, smiling.
"What are you doing here?" Mike asked. "What about Alan?"
"He's off on a doctor's conference in New York right now." Maggie explained "He won't be back until sometime next week."
"Oh." Mike sighed as Maggie ran her finger over his knuckles. "Mike, I want to say sorry about the way I treated you." Mike tore his eyes away from the window and looked at her.
"Maggie it's f-," He started to say but Maggie interrupted him.
"No Mike, it's not fine." She said, her voice rising a little. "I treated you like crap and I shouldn't have, and for that I'm sorry." Mike sighed, too tired to really argue with his once girlfriend.
"Alright, apology accepted." Mike sighed closing his eyes.
"We should let him get some sleep." Lizzy whispered, making her way to the door. Maggie looked like she was going to protest, but with a look from Micky, she quickly walked out too.
"Who want's coffee?" Maggie asked, looking around.
"As long as it's not what the hospital calls coffee…'cause that's nothing but the 'rumor' of coffee'." Micky said, wrinkling his nose. Peter laughed.
"How would you know?" Maggie asked. "Do you make a habit of getting hospital coffee?"
"No, but I'm assuming that hospital coffee is much like CIS coffee." Micky said. "And their coffee was gross."
"Alright, since when did you work for the CIS?" Lizzy questioned, raising her eyebrows.
"It's a long story." Davy said, sitting down as Maggie, Micky, and Peter hurried out to get coffee for everyone.
"Care to tell it?" Lizzy asked, sitting down as well.
"Basically we got mixed up in a group of spies that wanted a formula for a doomsday bug so they could wipe out the world." Davy said. "They put the formula into fortune cookies and Peter got ahold of one so long story short, we had to work with the CIS to make sure that didn't happen."
"I see." Lizzy nodded and leaned her head up against the wall, sighing.
"What's the matter?" Davy asked.
"I'm just thinking of this dream I had." Lizzy admitted. "Or what I can recall. It was so weird… You were in it Davy."
"Was I?" Davy asked.
"Mmm hmm." Lizzy went quiet, a thoughtful look on her face.
"What happened?" Davy asked after a few moments.
"Well, I was traveling out West and I ran into this man who was going East, and it was you." Lizzy said, not looking at Davy.
"It was me?" Davy repeated. Lizzy nodded.
"Well what happened?" Davy asked.
"We exchanged words and parted ways." Lizzy said.
"And?" Davy asked.
"I can't remember what happened after." Lizzy answered.
"Oh." Davy sighed. Something stirred in his memory. "My dream," He whispered, "I remember a little bit of my dream. Someone who looked an awful lot like you turned everyone into monsters and they started coming after me." Davy shuttered a little. "Even Mike… Mike was dead, Lizzy, Mike was dead, and he still tried to get me." He repeated a little more forceful than he had meant to.
"Davy, Mike's fine… He's alright." Lizzy said, cupping Davy's face in her hand.
"I know, I know he's alive and is going to be okay… But…" Davy trailed off. Lizzy sighed and nodded. She knew exactly what Davy felt. She held his hand, both of them lost in their own thoughts about their dreams.
"So where are we going to get coffee?" Maggie asked as she, Micky, and Peter walked down the sidewalk.
"Does anyone have any money?" Peter asked, looking at Micky. All three of them paused patting their pockets.
"I have fifty cents on me." Maggie finally said producing four dimes and two nickels.
"A dollar." Peter announced, holding out a worn dollar bill.
"We're in luck." Micky said, reaching deep into his pocket and pulling out a crumpled bill. "I have five!" He exclaimed, holding it up.
"Great, so all together we have six fifty." Maggie said. "That should be enough for coffee and maybe even something to eat."
"Let's stick with the coffee." Micky said. "I'd hate to hear what Mike would say if we brought something to eat. He's probably going to blow a gasket when he finds out we spent money on coffee when we could be saving it for…" He trailed off, biting his lip.
"What's the matter Micky?" Peter asked, noticing Micky's worried look.
"Peter…how are we going to pay Mike's hospital bills?"
Peter looked at Micky open mouthed. "Oh, I-I don't know, I guess we forgot about that." Peter whispered, running a hand down his face and letting out a heavy sigh.
"Let's go back… I can put up with crappy coffee, but I can't put up with hospital bills piling up." Micky said, turning around to head back to the hospital. Maggie looked at Peter, who shrugged and started following Micky back. As they walked past a bookstore, Maggie paused to look at a book about ancient Egypt that was in the window.
"Oh my God!" She yelped, causing Peter to turn around.
"Maggie, what is it?" He asked worriedly. "Hey Mick, come back here!" He hollered to the drummer as he turned around and went back to the woman.
"Nothing, just the book- I just remembered a dream I had is all." Maggie said. "It's nothing." She turned to Peter smiling.
"Are you sure?" Micky asked.
"Yeah, I'm sure." Maggie said waving her hand.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Peter asked as they continued walking back to the building.
"No, not really." Maggie said. "It's stupid."
"Dream's aren't stupid." Peter said. "Some dreams tell you how to solve a problem you're having. Some give you a warning about something." He said as the got to the hospital doors and held it open for Micky and Maggie to walk through.
"You and your hippie explanations." Mick said, laughing slightly.
"It's not a hippie explanation Micky, a lot of scientists believe that dreams try to tell people things on a subconscious level." Peter explained as they made their way up the stairs.
"Hey you three," Davy greeted them as they rounded the corner. "Where's the coffee?"
"Hey Davy, we didn't get it." Micky said.
"So we see." Lizzy smiled. "Why not?"
"Micky and Peter remembered that they have to pay hospital bills." Maggie said, tucking her hair behind her ear.
"Oh, dang, we do, don't we?" Davy said, sinking down into his chair, his head in his hands, thinking.
"Yeah, and I really don't know how we'll do it." Micky said, imitating Davy. "Unless we do what we proposed earlier…"
"Is Mike awake?" Peter asked in order to change the subject. He peeked into Mike's room to find the Texan asleep, but his lips were pulled down into a slight frown and his eyebrows were knitted together like he was having a nightmare. Peter frowned, but quietly left to inform the others.
