Author's note- I do not own Teen Wolf
Beacon Hill's seemed to be unwelcoming of its prodigal daughter's return. Of course Invidia never really felt welcomed in the confines of the town anyway. The only place where she had the least bit of comfort was in the preserve but that was deep in the boundaries of the Hale and Lyko's territory.
It would take a few days to get around the city to get to the unoccupied side of the grounds on foot. In such a populated area it would be unfathomable to drive the stolen truck. It was fine with the wolf though; she enjoyed walking among the innocent quarry.
Exiting the truck she grabbed what little items she had managed to acquire in the short trip. A baseball cap and sunglasses did the trick in hiding her features to those who only knew her face. Next was a large red hoodie stolen from a drunkard who had come a little to close at a gas station. It reeked of booze and sweat, among other things, but was just enough to cover the scent of the wolf. She would be virtually invisible for this particular hunt.
Most people passed her on the street without giving her a second glance. The few that would only commented if she needed any food or money. It was strange to have so many friendly people come out of the woodwork when she wasn't herself. Where were all these friendly faces when she was Invidia?
Keeping to herself she moved past a familiar window front. On its face was the advertisement of submarine sandwiches and a soda fountain. The shop brought a quick smile to the wolf's face. She didn't exactly like working there, but having Peter there made the labor bearable. It was also one of the only things that made her feel normal other than school.
When she went to pull the door open she found it to be locked. It made sense. The lights were dim and no one appeared to be inside. She must have gotten caught up in nostalgia to be so blind. It had been happening so often on her trip back to Beacon Hills. Invidia made a mental note to keep track every time she spaced out, from that moment on. There was no room for error in her plans.
"Sorry miss, but the shops been closed for a while now." A velvety voice called to her left. Moving her eyes she kept her head down away from the voice. From the glance she saw it was an elderly man with a broom sweeping in front of the antique shop that was situated next to the deli.
"Oh." She moved to turn away but before she did the man added else to conversation. Older people liked to talk.
"Yeah it's a shame. I really enjoyed the sandwiches there, used to get the same thing every day. A Reuben with Swiss and extra kraut. The deli owner's daughter used to make it every time I went in there. If she wasn't there then I wouldn't go, but she had a little accident in the woods or something. Her mom closed down the shop soon after…" The man looked lost for a moment. A passing look of sadness took over his wrinkled face. "It's a shame. She was so young."
Having heard enough from the older gentleman Invidia made her way down the street. The emotions or lack thereof was bothering her. Ana considered her a friend or at least a friendly acquaintance. And yet she felt no pain at her passing. No remorse or sympathy. A person who treated her with more respect and love then her own blood; taken by a monster. She knew she should feel guilty or at most responsible. Normal people wouldn't be able to live with blood on their hands. Yet she was drenched in it, but still marching on.
It was a constant battle that plagued her heart. In the deepest fathoms of her mind there is a flicker of light. One that she clings to when the night draws in and she's trying to find solace and sleep. Her innocence and compassion, her love and reason, her warmth and sympathy, every memory of everything important. A single candle of humanity in the pit of black that is the rest of her existence. It struggles to keep burning through the darkness. And everyday it seems dimmer and dimmer.
When the moon becomes full she loses her light and the darkness closes in like a wolf to pray. Demons of hate and loneliness rule that vastness. Losing her only grounding she loses her way, and eventually everything that makes her human. She was a killer, a monster.
Removing the baseball cap Invidia ran a shaky hand through her choppy brown locks. It was times like these where she missed her uncle. He would help guide her. Tell her she was not lost, but just adrift in something bigger then whether she had humanity or not. He would tell her that in the darkness there was a predator, not a killer. Of course that didn't make things all that much better for a young girl. She was so frighten back then.
Although she was scared he told her the only way to move through the dark was to trust the wolf's senses. He explained that they were night creatures, she was a night creature. There was nothing to fear in the dark. But that meant losing the light everyone pushed her so hard to cling to.
It was all very problematic for Invidia. All she wanted—no needed—desperately in this world was stable footing in what and who she was supposed to be. Any semblance on what the right path was.
She hated being a wolf and a human. She hated being a being in limbo between an animal and man. It was a curse she would put on no one. Werewolves were creatures that should have never been. A monster born to not belong to either world and yet desperately trying to. Truly it was a form of hell.
Placing the cap back upon her head she hurried to her destination as soon as possible. As soon as she would reach the woods the foul thoughts would disappear. Instead she would turn her mind off and just listen. It was far easier to ignore the questions of morality then to try to find impossible answers.
"Make sure you pick up some candy or ice cream or something. It's not a party without something sweet!"
"Yeah yeah. I heard you the first five thousand times."
"Well it's not my fault that the only way people can find you sweet at all is if you were literally covered in sugar holding a bag of candy and had cotton candy hair. Then just maybe My, but it would still be a stretch." Laura called out as she put the remaining blankets on her bed. Myra rolled her eyes and grabbed her keys from the counter before heading to the grocer.
It took ten painful minutes of traffic filled Beacon Hills streets to get the store. It also took every last ounce of patients the wolf had not have blown up into full out road rage. Laura had told her before that Myra's true wolf came out behind the wheel and not the full moon. Ever since then she tried to keep calm. For her birthday Joshua had gotten her a box set of relaxation CD's and mediation set. She even had a small Buddha that sat on her dash, in hopes to help curb her anger. All in all it was working, if only a little bit.
"Get out of the freaking parking spot already you freaking crypt creeper. I swear to God how long does it take to put two sacks of Depends in the trunk and leave!" Myra huffed in frustration as she slammed her forehead on the steering wheel. The old lady looked at her and seemed to go even slower if it was at all possible.
Myra let out a deep growl before turning the volume of her relaxation music on full blast. "Deep breath in and out. In and out. Dear God please help me not punch an old lady. I really don't want that kind of evil on my conscience."
Finally after eons of waiting Myra made her way into the parking spot. Heading into the store she went to pick up a basket that had a gimpy wheel. Rolling her eyes she went to pick up the items she needed for the party that was planned for later that evening. Laura had convinced everyone that a get together was in order to celebrate the end of summer before they all had to go back to school and college. She also mentioned that everyone, especially Derek could get there mind off of the world for at least a few hours.
Even though Derek had Kate to try to get over Paige it was still apparent he was mourning her loss. Laura noticed this most and she was dead set on helping him through it till the end. Myra admired that about her. She was always the best when it came to sisterly stuff like that. She probably got it from Talia.
Heading down the soda aisle Myra grabbed one of everyone's favorites. The next thing on her list was snacks. She grabbed a few bags here and there as well as popcorn. Joshua loved popcorn. Whether it be movie butter or sweet kettle he ate it all within a few minutes. Myra was always jealous of his eating habits. As wolves their metabolism burned rather quickly but if she was to eat the way he did she would surly gain some sort of weight, but he stayed slim and lanky as always.
"Having a party beautiful?" A Man called to her left. Looking over at him she saw him casually leaned against the shelf holding a bag of wavy potato chips.
"You can say that." She replied making sure to sound as disinterested as possible.
"Think it will be fun if you invited me?" Looking back she saw the man send a wink in her direction. Suppressing a groan and shiver of disgust she looked away rolling her basket farther down the aisle.
"No, I think that would be the opposite of fun. Try something more like misery."
"Come on babe don't be that way." Myra rolled her eyes and faced the stranger. He wasn't ugly or rather dashing in any fashion. He wasn't dirty or creepy either, just a guy trying his luck with a woman.
"I'm sorry, but you are barking up the wrong tree if you get my drift." The wolf nodded curtly before getting back to her shopping.
"Aww, that's cool then. I guess this is where we part ways then. It's been fun my shopping Juliet." That line was so cheesy it hurt the wolf to even listen. Cringing she waved him off.
"Yeah you to grocery store Romeo." She just couldn't help herself smile when he laughed at her goodbye.
Next on her list were sweets. Going down the aisle the wolf just dropped whatever was in arms reach into the basket. Stopping when the cart got rather heavy she checked to see if she had everything she needed. When it came to this shopping trip money was no object, Michael made sure of that.
Looking over the things one last time she overheard a man's voice down the aisle looking at the gum. He was on the phone, but at the distance he was at and the wolf's hearing she could hear his conversation clear enough.
For the most part Myra tried to not use her wolf senses to snoop on people. When she was younger it was different story, especially when she was in school. Her friends used to call her the gossip queen, but as she got older she learned to block out people's whispering.
This conversation however was different. "What do you mean you can't show up?"
"Don't tell me you're still stringing that little wolf along. Why even bother with him when you got a real man right here?"
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Just know that you got me waiting for you when you're done with their little party. I've got something special planned for you."
"Love you too Kate." As soon as the man got off the phone Myra made sure to make herself look as occupied as possible. When he passed her by she almost popped the soda in her hands.
She knew Kate was a snake ever since she met her. Kate was way too old for Derek, preying on his vulnerability. This just another thing added to the long list of reasons to hate Kate Argent.
Paying for the party items Myra made her way to the Hale residents to drop of the stuff. She left fuming with a hunter to confront.
"Whoa, calm down She Hulk you will smash the glasses if you hold on any tighter." Joshua stared at his sister as she set up the picnic table behind the Hale house. He was busy braiding Cora's hair while Laura was setting up lights in the trees.
"Shut up Josh." Myra was busy staring holes into Kate Argent's back. She was surprised she hadn't turn around yet or busted into flames for the force of her look.
"Myra smash!" Cora cheered as Joshua laughed. Myra rolled her eyes at the two.
"Look, she spends one moment with you and now she's ruined."
"She's not ruined. That was the cutest thing ever and you know it." Joshua pouted. Myra moved on to setting up the bowls of snacks on the table. It would be soon until she would finally talk to Kate.
"All done Cora. You look cute as always!" Cora squeaked in appreciation before running inside to show her mother.
"Why don't you make yourself useful and help me now Joshua." Myra grumbled but her brother just let out a smirk.
"I think you're a little big to get your hair braided but if that's what you want." He patted his lap with his smirk turning into a full blown smile.
"Don't be weird." At that his smile only faltered for a second.
"You're the one who is making it weird. Tell your brother what's wrong My."
"Nothing's wrong just go get the soda from the car or something!" Joshua slowly stood up and followed his sister's orders. She didn't mean to snap at him. It was all the information about Kate spoiling her afternoon. Just another reason she hated the hunter. Kate bothered Myra without even having to deliberately do it.
"Yes Dad." Joshua muttered under his breath. Soon Laura joined in on the teasing hearing the whole conversation from her place by a tree.
"MYRA ANGRY!"
"Not you too!"
Soon everyone was settled on eating and talking while music played in the back ground. Myra sat comfortable next to Laura as Joshua told some sort of story of a dream he had the other night. No one was really listening all the much but he just liked to hear himself talk.
Kate was next to Derek but half way into the story she said she need to use the ladies room, Myra seized her chances and went to follow her much to Laura's protests.
"My, where are you going?"
"I will be right back, don't worry."
Following the hunter the wolf waited for her to come out of the bathroom. A few minutes passed and Kate emerged from the house taken back by Myra's presence for a fraction of a second before she regained herself.
"You sure do like sneaking around don't you Myra."
Myra kept her eyes sharp as she sent an accusing glare the hunter's way. She stepped closer to Kate keeping her voice level and quiet making sure no one heard the conversation. The group was quite a distance away and the two were out of sight, but she wanted make sure they weren't going to be interrupted.
"You are one to talk Kate."
"What are you talking about?" Kate was now beginning to show signs of agitation. She came into the wolf's personal space. Myra crossed her arms, not afraid of the scare tactics.
"I know you are cheating on Derek."
"Wow Myra I knew you hated me but going as far as to get in my business. That's a dangerous move even for you."
Kate was now far too close. The scent of anger permeated the air from both women. Myra sent a warning glare of yellow. "I'm not afraid of you Kate. A wolf has no reason to fear a snake, even one as poisonous as you."
"So what are you going to do? You going to tell Derek and crush his precious little heart. That thing is as fragile as glass now a days. You really want to go and stomp on it."
"Just imagine how devastated he will be. I'm sure Laura would totally appreciate that."
Myra didn't want to think about that. But Kate was right, in her own little twisted way. "I will find a way to get you Kate, don't think I won't"
"Sure, you will wolfy. Stay out of my personal affairs Myra, lest someone gets hurt. And it sure as hell won't be me." Kate left Myra to take her place by Derek's side. Myra soon followed after. Her blood boiled even more with new hate for Kate Argent.
Invidia had managed to finally get into the preserve. Making her way she found herself on familiar grounds. Going to the Hale house she wasn't expecting find everyone having a party. Staying downwind she moved closer to the Hale home to listen in on the conversation.
Joshua was rambling on about some dream he had. Nothing of interest or use to the wolf. Staying hidden in the tree line she saw the Argent hunter leave the group to be followed by Myra.
Moving to a new spot she waited until Myra had confronted the hunter. She went on about Kate being a cheater. There was a clear hate between the two. It was like a bomb that was on the brink of exploding. Invidia watched as Myra let her eyes flash golden yellow.
Kate said a few words before leaving her sister. Myra soon followed suit leaving her cloud of anger behind her.
Invidia saw an opportunity to set her plans in motion between the two women. All they needed was a little push in the right direction and the bomb would go off.
