Paul gave Bella a weak smile. "For a second, I thought I was in heaven."
Bella sighed in relief. "How much pain medication did Sue give you?"
Paul groaned, trying to sit up. "Not enough," he grinned. "To tell you the truth, I think my body burned it off already."
"Maybe you should just lay back and rest," Bella frowned, touching his shoulder.
"I'm fine…" he shifted, emitting a loud groan.
"Sure you are. You fell into boulders, Paul."
"Bella, I'm fine, really."
"No," Bella's voice peaked. "Sue said you need to rest for a few days, and you're damn well going to do that!"
Paul studied her, nodding. Paul knew she just wanted what was best for him, and knowing full well that she was going to stress anyway, he thought it was best to put her and the twins at ease by obeying. Since her father was diagnosed with cancer, he could feel the stress radiating off of her.
"I'm sorry," he brought her hand to his lips, kissing it. "I'll rest. It will give us some time to talk about the wedding and our twins."
Bella smiled.
"I'll ask Sue if it's okay to bring you home," Bella turned for the door, but Paul held her back, squeezing her hand.
"You're a sweetheart," Paul hummed.
Bella went to talk to Sue.
"How's he doing?" Sue asked.
"Good. He said his pain medication burned it," Bella said, slightly baffled.
"Our bodies are warmer than the norm, so we burn off things faster," Sam informed her. It made sense; sometimes Paul was so hot that it woke her up in the middle of the night.
"We'll give him more if need be," Sue assured.
"Also, can I take him home? I managed to get him to agree with resting for a few days, but only if he can rest at home."
"Paul was pretty adamant on not resting," Jacob chuckled. "He's finally being a bit of a pushover, eh?"
Sue smacked the back of his head. "Don't get me started, now."
Bella snorted.
"In the morning. I would like to keep him here for a little while longer for observational purposes."
"Thank you," Bella smiled, then turned to the rest of the pack. "All of you."
"No need to thank us, Bella," Sam smirked.
"We're family, it's what we do," Jacob added.
Sue took hold of Bella's hand. "Come on, let's get back to Paul."
Bella nodded. They made their way back and Sue immediately gave a sleeping Paul more medication.
"So, Bella, how are you? I know everyone's worried about Paul, but they're also worried about you and the twins."
"We're good," Bella took a seat next to Paul.
"Have you thought about where the birth will take place?" Sue questioned.
"Paul and I want the twins to be born on the rez, and I want to have a natural birth," Bella laid a hand on her belly. "The pain will be twice as horrible, but I don't want medication to interfere."
"Well, having a C-section is definitely the most favourable decision when women are having twins. There is also a higher chance of either one or both being in a breeched position in comparison to singletons," Sue said, adjusting one of Paul's tubes.
Bella hadn't really read much on having twins. She thought having twins was like any other.
"What's a breeched position?" she asked, worriedly. Bella regretted not asking more about birthing when she went to get an ultrasound.
"It's not as bad as it sounds. It just means that the baby won't turn around in time; the head has to come out first. There isn't enough space in the womb with twins, sometimes."
"Could it hurt them?" Bella felt the blood drain from her face.
"There are some risks, but it doesn't happen often. I suggest a C-section," Sue provided, cleaning up. "Didn't the doctor tell you any of this? Have you been researching?" Sue noticed Bella's pale complexion. "Bella, sweetie, try resting your head next to Paul."
"I-I feel like a failure as a mother…and the twins aren't even born yet," Bella's breathing was shallow.
"Sweetie, please, calm down. I didn't mean to upset you," Sue kneeled in front of Bella. "I thought the doctor would have went over this with you."
"He went over some stuff, but I never given it much thought. But after everything that's happened; finding the father of my babies, finding out he's part werewolf, and my dad. I never got around to it."
"Look, you're less than halfway through your third trimester, you still have some time to read about it and talk to doctors. Plus, if you need to talk to anyone, I'm always here for both of you, and so is the pack. Remember? Some of us have had children before." Sue patted Bella's knee.
Bella took a deep breath. "Thank you."
She smiled warmly. "I know how scary your first pregnancy can be. Plus, you're having twins, which doubles the scare."
"I just don't want to fail them or Paul. I really never had to look out for anyone other than my sister and myself."
"I noticed how scare you were for Paul, and how quick you were to try and help," Sue embraced her. "I think you'll be alright for the most part. When the babies arrive, it will come easy."
"Thanks, Sue," Bella hugged her back. "Seriously."
Sue laughed lightly, pulling away. "Any time, sweetie. Now, come on, Paul will awake again soon. The drowsy part of the medication never lasts longer than ten minutes."
Sam walked into the room, chuckling. Paul woke up to the sound.
"What's so funny?" Bella wondered.
"Well, seems like my wife, your sister, and the rest of the pack are planning on giving you a baby shower."
Bella's eyes widened. Bella hates parties.
"Please tell me that this is a really bad joke?"
Paul and Sam let out two booming laughs.
"It'll be fine, babe," Paul had a playful grin plastered on his otherwise tired face.
"It's a 'co-ed baby shower,'" Sam air-quoted.
"See, I can come, too," Paul stroked a hand she didn't know he held.
"Fine," she sighed. "I'll have to kill my sister, then."
After Sue and Sam left the room, Bella continued to rest her head next to Paul's.
"Baby, you should go home and sleep in our bed. That chair can't be comfortable for you or the twins."
"I won't be able to sleep without you in bed," Bella mumbled.
Paul moved over. "Come in, then."
"Paul, there's no way that we can fit in that bed."
"Just come on," Paul patted the empty spot next to him. She laid down carefully, barely fitting.
Paul wrapped an arm around her, securing her in place. She snuggled into his chest, ignoring the plastic tubes that were in the way.
Bella was scared. There was no way to predict the future, and no way of knowing if her twins were going to be okay. She hated oblivion. But lying next to Paul in a very tiny bed, somehow, Bella felt like everything was going to be just fine.
