"Happy birthday baby." I whispered in Kyle's ear.
"I'm three." Kyle stated, rolling over to look at me.
"Yes you are." I tickled his stomach, earning a cute giggle.
"He went to get your favorite breakfast." I replied
"Pancakes!" Kyle cheered.
"What was that?" Jack asked, walking in the room, holding three boxes.
"Daddy." Kyle smiled.
"Hey kiddo." Jack replied, pulling Kyle into a hug. "Kimmy." Jack pecked my lips and handed me the bag of food.
"Did you get my dad's?" I asked.
"Yeah he said he would be up in a minute." Jack replied. He shrugged off his coat and plopped down on the bed next to me. After discussing it for a while my dad, Jack and I had come to the conclusion that none of us wanted to go out for breakfast but we also didn't want to cook so Jack offered to pick up food. Now we've reached rock bottom and won't even leave my room to eat. After we all had breakfast Jack and I left Kyle with my dad so that we could go make sure everything was set for his birthday.
"I can't believe he's three." Jack said as we walked out of the laser tag arena.
"I know, I feel really bad about missing his first birthday and his second birthday and his first steps, those are important comments in a kids life and I left him hanging." I said. I wanted to cry but I also wanted to remain strong.
"Your the only one that's mad about it." Jack began. "Kyle understands just how much you did to make sure you were there for all his other birthdays and you can tell that he doesn't hate you for the past. All that matters is the present. We could go over our arguments everyday but that wouldn't change a single thing that happened in the past, all you can do is hope for the future." He finished.
"That's the thing Jack, I can't change the past, I can't go back in time and tell him that I love him or that he's the best thing that's happened to me." I whispered.
"You don't have to go back in time to tell him that, all you have to do is remind him every morning that you love him and that makes up for it. A kid wants nothing more then a parent that loves them whether they express it or not, Kyle knows you love him, you don't have to say it for him to know. Like I said, he's a smart kid."
"That's not enough to make up for what I put him through." I was crying by now.
"A simple, 'I love you' does a LOT more then you might think Kim." Jack said. I shook my head and stared at my shoes. "Had my dad told me that he loves before he went to jail, I probably wouldn't hate him." Jack whispered. I looked up at him, hearing those words. "What he did was wrong and-and cold blooded but had he just uttered the words I love you before he was hauled away, I wouldn't hate him as much as I do." He added.
I sighed and looked at my shoes again. How is one supposed to respond to that. Jack had told me what his father did and it was cold blooded and I knew Jack hated him but he hated him for reasons I would have never guessed.
"I'm sorry Jack." I whispered.
"I don't want an apology from you. You have done nothing but open my eyes to my true feelings. For the longest time I just hated my dad because of what he did to my mom, but then you, you came into my life and forced me to process my thoughts. You made me realize why I was mad, why I tried to get over it through alcohol and drugs and despite my resistance you got me to put that stuff down. I don't want you to apologize for being the best thing that's ever happened to me." Jack said in the most sensitive and touching toner I've ever heard. It brought even more tears to my eyes.
"Jack, hearing what you said makes me both happy and mad because I really have been forcing you to change who you are and that wasn't my goal. I fell in love with Jack Brewer that's just who you are. I guess I told myself that I was just helping you realize all of this but in reality I was pretty much your mom." I said.
"You shouldn't feel bad about anything, you didn't force me to change, you opened my eyes and made me realize that it was in my best interest to change." He whispered.
"I'm sor-" He didn't let me finish, just grabbed my face and pulled our lips together. I sighed into the kiss.
"Now let's go before the parties over." Jack said, pulling me over to his bike. When we got back to my house we loaded the rest of the stuff that we needed into the back of Jack's truck and everyone piled in. We drove to the laser tag arena and started to set up the last few things before everyone got there. Mariah was the first one to show up but that's because she picked up the cake for me so she had to come early.
"Hey Kim." She smiled and hugged me.
"Hey." How's it goin?" I asked.
"Good, great actually, I talked to Mason last week and he said he wants to be a part of my babies life, which I guess I'm okay with but I met a guy, who is completely fine with the pregnancy and has a job and if I'm being completly honest with myself, I really, really want him to ask me to be his girlfriend." This pregnancy has made Mariah very long winded at times.
"Wait so you've gone out with him?" I asked confused.
"Yeah, we've been on like eight dates these past few weeks but he hasn't asked me out so I'm kinda worried that he won't and-and" I cut her off before it became another one of her speeches.
"Eight dates is saying something girl." I told her. "He's gonna ask you out. Why don't you see if he can join us, I paid for 25 people but three people aren't coming." I said.
"Are you sure?" She asked. I nodded my head and grabbed the cake out of her hands. "Thanks Kimmy." She walked out of the building.
"Mommy when are we gonna play?" Kyle asked running over to me.
"As soon as everyone gets here." I replied.
"Mommy I'm bored." He yelled over and over again.
"Jack!" I called. Jack turned to face me, raising his eyebrows. "Could you do something, anything with him?" I asked, pointing at Kyle.
"Sure, you wanna go on a walk?" Jack asked Kyle. I sighed as they walked out the door.
"Your stressing this way too much." My dad said.
"This is the first time that Kyle gets to celebrate his birthday with his mom, it has to be perfect." I replied.
"You know what would make it perfect?" My dad asked. I shrugged as if telling him to just move on. "If you spent less time stressing over the setup and more time with Kyle." He said.
"But dad-" He took the balloons and plates out of my hand.
"I'll take care of this, you go find Jack and Kyle." I smiled at him for a minute before I walked out of the building, in search of Jack and Kyle. I found them about a block away, sitting on a bench. Jack had his arm over Kyle's shoulders and Kyle had his head resting on Jack's side.
"Well if it isn't my two favorite guys." I said, making my presence known to the pair.
"Oh, hey Kimmy." Jack said.
"Hi mommy." I sat next to Jack, on the opposite side of Kyle and cuddled into Jack.
"I thought you were setting everything up." Jack said.
"Yeah but I thought that I could fit in some time to chill with my favorite people." I stated. No other words were said, nothing needed to be said. When the time came for us to get back to the laser tag arena we walked slowly down the street, savoring the last few minutes of quietness. Almost everyone had arrived by the time we got back and when the last person walked through the doors that was my que to get things rolling. We immediately started to get everyone that planned on playing laser tag into their gear. Mariah and I were in charge of getting the kids ready while Jack put everyone on different teams (with Kyle's help of course).
"So did your guy come?" I asked Mariah. I had briefly scanned the guests to see who had showed up but I didn't pay a great deal of attention.
"Yeah, I'll have to introduce you guys later." She replied.
"Cool. We finished getting everyone ready and making teams and began playing. Jack Kyle and I were on one team while my dad, Mariah and her boyfriend were on the other team. After about 10 games we decided to call it quits and get some food.
As we were eating Jack suddenly stood up and got everyone's attention. "Now I know that this party is all about Kyle but I also want to make it a really special day for the beautiful young lady that put everything together. Most of you know me but for those of you that don't, I'm Jack Brewer, Kim's boyfriend and the reason I'm standing before you right now is Becuase I want to promise Kim something." He said, taking a knee behind me. I shifted in my seat so that I was facing him, as did everyone else. "I wanna promise you, Kim Crawford that some day we will get married and we will grow our family." He said. I teared up as he pulled a box out of his pocket and opened it, revealing a beautiful silver band. Written in small fine print was the words, 'you have my heart' on the outside. On the inside the band read, 'forever and always'. I smiled and pulled Jack into a tight hug as he slipped the ring onto my finger. I would have kissed him but with so many of my family members around I opted not to.
"I love you." I whispered in his ear just loud enough for only him to hear.
"I love you too." He whispered in the same hushed tone that I used. He pulled away and sat back down next to me. Jack was on one side of me, while Kyle was on the other side with my dad next to him. After we finished eating the party was just about over, people started leaving and Jack, my dad and I got to work, cleaning while Mariah and her unnamed guy watched Kyle. Which reminds me, I still have yet to meet him. Once everyone was gone and all the cleaning up was done we all went outside and over to the bench that Kyle, Jack and I were sitting on earlier.
"So Mariah, who is this?" I asked. She blushed.
"This is Max." She replied.
"Cool." Jack said. We talked for a while and learned a lot of things about Max. Apparently he is a brown belt in Jujitsu.
"That's cool." Jack said referring to Max's martial arts. "I love martial arts too, I'm a third degree black belt in five forms of martial arts." Jack stated. I stared at him for a second.
"Really?" I asked. I remember talking to Jack briefly about karate when we first met but he never told me that he was that good.
"Yes really." I heard a voice that wasn't here before. I turned around to see Jerry and Grace.
"Hey Kim, sorry we couldn't make it." Grace said. "Happy birthday Kyle."
"Yeah, happy birthday Kyle." Jerry added.
"Well," I began getting back to the martial arts conversation. "I happen to be a black belt in two forms of karate." I bragged. "I'm probably a little rusty though because I haven't trained since I moved."
"Well you should get back to that, especially if your a black belt." Jack said.
"I know I was going to check out that dojo that you told me about but I don't know anyone that goes there." I replied.
"Well how about this, if you promise me right now that you'll get back into karate then I will switch dojos." Jack said.
"And if Jack's switching, then I'm switching too." Jerry piped in.
"I promise." I said. We talked for a while then everyone came back to my house to watch a movie. We watched Heaven is for Real which I absolutely died for and not just because the little boy that played Colton was so adorable. When the movie was over Grace, Mariah, Jerry, and Max left, leaving me with Kyle, Jack, and my dad.
Sorry it took me so long to update, I just finished my first full week of school and now I have a three day weekend, so thank you Labor Day. I'm not sure how many more chapters I'm going to do but if you anything to happen let me know because I don't have a whole lot of ideas left.
